We had 9 deg.F. (-13 deg.C) this morning. It's 23 deg.F. now.

Here too, and I'm kinda starting to miss the heated
seats in the SEL. My back's not too good lately,
sometimes the heat _really_ feels good. Wind's due
to pick up, 10-20 MPH it's gonna be cold. It's down
to 8 degF and morning's a long way off.

I don't think this person knows just which car he/she owns, but it won't shift
past 2nd gear. The problem persisted with the replacement tranny. Did the
2.5L equipped W124 and W201 cars have kick-down switches that could stick like
those on the W123's?? If the car is still available, I'm tempted to find a
driver to test drive it with me a little ways down the road so I can unplug the
kick-down switch and see if it will upshift through all gears.

"wicked expensive" is a variable term. You're getting the seat its just a
matter of how much of what I paid for the seat I get back. I was thinking $75
shipped. I anticipate shipping to be around $50 but until I get your zip I
won't know for sure.

I have a very good indy for the servicing. Up to now, all the servicing has
been done where I bought it (Phoenix Motor Company). The salesman even had
the service guy who dealt with the car when it was with its PO come and
talk to me. Nice touch.
The seats are both heated and cooled. I'm thinking I will get more use out
of the cooled seat feature. And, I foresee the top being down quite a
bit...prolly stay down until it gets into the buck-teens next June.

Jaime, etc.,
Because of the "slow" cranking, I'm starting to lean away from the glow
system. The relay fuse did look good when I checked it as well as the wiring
contacts inside the box. Are there any connections I'm not seeing that could
cause slow cranking? I just had the alternator replaced about 2-3 months ago
because it killed the old battery and put in a new battery as well. It was
starting ok, then now it won't. I guess the starter or solenoid could have
just gotten tired also, or there could be a wire somewhere not providing a
good solid connection. I'll try to get under it again and look at the
starter connections later this afternoon if the rain holds off.

Re: [MBZ] 617 Glow Plugs and More

2013-12-06 Thread Larry T
As jim suggested, getting a gauge will tell you a lot. I suggest a $20
gauge from Radio Shack or Welmart - read the instructions but only for
the test you need to use -more will just be confusing. You can even
make test light with very few tools and parts -- you need a 12v bulb
with a socket and some wire so you can put the bulb between 2 places
that should have 12v.Or you can buy one for less than $5 for
instance, a test light will allow you to test the wire going to the 1st
GP to see if it is getting 12V. If yes the light will light, if no
light no 12v. without 12v at the GP's you may have a blown fuse of a
bad Glow Plug relay.

sorry you are having trouble -

Sincerely,
Larry

Guys,
Thanks for the previous clarification on the glow plugs for the 617 engine.
Yesterday was warm here in the Atlanta area so I replaced my glow plugs (80
300SD) with the Beru regular tips that I had. Removed the old Beru which were
the tapered tip. Old plugs looked ok with no carbon build up, reamed the plug
hole with a stiff wire brush (gun cleaner), not much there, changed both
filters, re-primed system, and NOTHING. It still just cranks the same and won't
start. It cranks slow which now makes me think the starter has gotten too weak
to crank fast enough. The battery is only about 3 months old (Bosch group 49)
and seems ok.
I've checked the relay fuse, ok. I've checked all wiring to glow plugs, looks
ok. Fuel in pre-filter looks nice and clean. Can you guys think of anything
else I might check? I'm not a DIY guy so I don't have electrical test gauges,
etc. I just hate to pay a tow bill to my Indie just to have him laugh and tell
me it's something simple I overlooked. Now, I could tow it to start it because
I've done that before (35 mph, 2nd gear, starts right up if battery dead), but
the tranny is old and I don't want to stress it.
Thanks for any suggestions.
Best Wishes,

A penny a kWh, with half the cost coming from the surge protector?
(6 tenths of a penny without the surge protector)
Just doesn't seem feasible.
If you used 1000kWh, more than I've ever used, that would be just under $12.

Here in Michigan, via Consumers Energy, my bill goes up, including taxes, $0.137
for every kWh. Plus there's a $7.50 monthly connection charge. Propane costs me
$2.08 per gallon after tax. I think Consumers gets about $0.80 per therm for NG,
but I'm not on a gas line.
Even with the house at 50°F above ambient, my heat pump costs less per BTU than
my 95% efficient furnace. If I had natural gas, I doubt it would ever make
financial sense to run the heat pump.

I think we are up to about 8" locally, perhaps more.

I started out for work this morning half an hour late (had to defrost
the car and get all the ice out of the monowiper) and turned back less
than half way there. The snow was starting to drift, and I'd be stuck
snowed OUT of the house for a day if I stayed and the wind picked up.

I may dig out some of the walks tonight when it quite (by 10 pm or so)
but I don't plan to go anywhere. At this point I'd have to shovel the
drive to get out, the snow is higher than the belly pan, and I don't
need to. Maybe tomorrow.

Gonna be really cold (7 F) tonight, too.

Kicker is we are expecting freezing rain Sunday. Going to work on
Monday will definitely be the pits.

I did get the power fixed to the garage -- neutral wire was cut from
improper hangers (Pop put them up 40 years ago, but my brother's have
fixed them a couple times to). Somehow having only the steel re-
inforcing wire intact on the neutral doesn't work very well! I've got
several project on hold out there, I can stay busy all day if I want.

Haven't tried to start anything yet, but will test the VW Diesel at 4F

I think a snowblower is one of the harder applications for a carb. I've used
ours on half choke for almost all 7 years we've owned it and I use 1oz of
Seafoam in every fillup. The only exception was 3 winters ago when it snowed
every week so the thing got run all the time. It doesn't seem to hurt anything,
its still running the same spark plug from when we got it 7 years ago.

At camp I want to get a clipboard to hang on the wall and detail oil changes
and maintenance. Dad is really, really bad about not changing the oil hardly
ever and he'll use the cheapest oil or whatever they've got at the gas station
when he thinks of it. I keep us stocked with better stuff and am basically in
change of the equipment. I didn't get the oil changed in anything at camp this
year. I hate leaving gas engines over the winter because of the acid buildup,
diesels are much less of a concerns but I think you're right in yearly changes.
The solution for you of course is to drive the car more ;)

I hear you. Winter has come here. It is cold and the ground is white. We
have had a bunch of snow this week. Won't quote numbers as I don't
recall what the official tally was. Minus 19 C here right now but not
too windy which helps. I ran the snowblower last night for the first
time. I might not have really needed it but we are looking after the
house next door as they are away and so I had to do their walks and
behind their garage as well.
Snowblower is relatively new and has been used very little but did not
want to run well last night. Had to keep the choke on part way or it
would die. Going to pour some Seafoam in the gas and let it idle for a
bit. Carb must be gumming up a bit. Hope that solves the issue as I
really don't want to tear into it. Feel a bit bad as I don't know when I
changed the oil. I checked the dipstick and it had oil and it looked
clean so I fired it up. I had planned to change the oil and grease the
thing but winter and cold got here first. I used it very little last
winter but I don't think I changed the oil in the spring. Don't like to
let engines sit with dirty oil but it happens. Did not get the oil
changed in the 300D this fall either so it is sitting in the garage with
dirty oil. Probably does not have 2000 miles on the oil but I normally
change it in the fall no matter what. Once a year is not excessive
whether I use it much or not. I need to start keeping a list of oil
changes for small equipment. I don't know when I last did the lawn mower
either. I do know it looks clean on the dip stick but it uses so little
that it costs next to nothing to do it. Also have wood chipper and
rototiller that should be changed as well.
Going to go south to Grand Forks ND tomorrow so I hope the roads are ok.
Supposed to be cold but clear so should be fine as long as the wind does
not start blowing the snow around.

I would agree with Kaleb for the most part, but that being said, I think the
W140s get a bad rap over the electronics, which I don't think is warranted.

I can see where if you have to pay someone to maintain your W140 it would be
costly, but it's a far easier DIY vehicle than I ever expected.

That's one of the reasons why I'm looking for a mid-90s R129. They share a lot
of systems and parts, which just makes it easier to maintain when there are two
of the same.

still remember having to buy a new BIOS to get my IBM luggable to boot from
a hard drive. It would only boot from a 51/4" floppy. For that matter, I
still have a Panasonic laptop that only boots from a 3 1/2" floppy ---

2013-12-06 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
Yea, while it is a nice car, very advanced it is nowhere near the quality of
the old days pre 140. I say 140 they are still very high quality but starting
to get a lot of electronic stuff on then that fails. It's really hard to beat a
good old 126, or 124.

Oh Craig...

Live cd/dvd is so 2009. Get unetbootin (http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/)
which will download CentOS for you and put it on a USB drive (get a big one
like 32GB) and you boot from that. That way you can actually save changes.

I'm using Puppy Linux right now from a USB drive. Actually I've been using it
on this laptop since July. I was just yesterday thing I ought to actually
install a working OS on this computer...

To try it out easily, they have

CentOS-6.5-x86_64-LiveCD.iso
This is a CD live image of CentOS 6.5 designed to be burned onto a CD.
You then boot your computer using that CD. Please read
http://wiki.centos.org/Manuals/ReleaseNotes/CentOSLiveCD6.5 for more
details about this image. The disk can also be used to install CentOS 6.5
onto your computer but without offering any package selection options at
install time.

CentOS-6.5-x86_64-LiveDVD.iso

DVD. You then boot your computer using that DVD. Please read

Re: [MBZ] happy hunting

Lots of easy and cheap fixes there. The PSE pump (central locking, lumbers) can
be rebuilt with a $10 eBay motor, for example. Just bought one myself to have
in the shelf.

Be sure to get under the car if possible and snag the lower engine harness.
This is often overlooked and can cause a lot of strange things with gauges and
starter/alternator.

Drop me a PM if you have questions. I really like these cars and have lost my
fear of them as I spend more time working with mine.
