I see it was filmed at Tyndall AFB, Panama City, FL. I was stationed
there as an Avionics Maintenance Officer in 1973. The targets shot down
(by F106s) at the time were the Bomarc missile (mach 2.5) and F102 drones,
just like the one in the video, only a much earlier version.

[MBZ] 'Nother Sondy Tale - Quitter Star

2014-01-15 Thread WILTON

Yep, 'Nother Sondy Tale.

QUITTER STAR
By Wilton Strickland

Extended delays in receiving parts and getting repairs done on my
circulating hot water heating system during the recent holiday period
reminded me of the following:

In early evening a couple of days after Thanksgiving at Sondrestrom Air
Base, Greenland, in 1978, many of us gathered outside near the center of the
base at a facsimile Christmas "tree" (Jule trae, in Danish) - a tall pole
strung with lights to form a cone shape - for a short and simple "tree"
lighting ceremony. Immediately after lighting the "tree," a Danish lady
standing beside me said, "Now they'll light the quitter star." I asked,
"Quitter star - what's that?" She replied, "The big star outline mounted up
near the top of Black Ridge (a 900-feet-tall cliff face overlooking the
base). When they light it, everybody quits for the rest of the year."

What's a federalized 1982 500 make, 200hp at best?
What if you stuck a 350hp crazy Finn OM603 in it?

Actually, I'd like to stick a CDI engine in it, and pay pre-1983 license fees.
How much work would it be to strip it bare and put in the driveline, shifter,
gas pedal, and entire wiring harness from a W211 e320 CDI?
Not as impressive as a crazy Finn engine, but it would keep up with the average
500SEL while getting twice the mpg.

Not much slower than an SD if you used a 123 wagon engine.
No slower than an SDL if you used a 124 wagon engine.

Diesel would be scorned by such a group.

What's funny, considering the fact that Irwin moved the Vice-Grip factory to
China, is the labeling on the bolt extractor packaging. "Made in USA with Global
Components" - what does that mean when the tool is forged in one piece? I hope
it doesn't mean the blister pack was made in USA and the tools inside were made
in China.

At any rate, I agree with the Amazon reviewers who say the helical Irwin are
better than the straight splined Lisle. To use a Lisle extractor on that flare
fitting, I would have had to hammer it on and then I would have had to hammer it
out of the tool.

Now the bleeder is stuck in the control valve, and since the other end of the
line goes into the control valve ABOVE the bleeder, I can't easily cut the line
to put the extractor on the nut. Why would the control valve bleeder be below
the outlet pipe to the spheres, is there a good reason to make sure the air goes
to the spheres and not to the bleeder?

the whole gaggle camped out at. (Not clear if Okrah is charging the
taxpayers for the accommodations.) Apparently there is a hospital
just up the road from Okrah's place, which just so happens to have a
reputation for the ladies' fixemup procedures, and Mooch has not
been seen in public since before Christmas. So, add it all up.
Interestingly, it has been reported that Mooch and Okrah don't get
on all that well, butchaknow the gurruls got to stick together... it
has also been reported that Barry and Mooch aren't gittin on all
that well, so maybe Okrah is counseling her and talking about a new
job if she packs on Barry and can't live off the taxpayer any more.

I'm sure we'll get details once the Mooch's traveling circus gets
back to DC, flying on the taxpayer dime since she did not come back
home with Barry and the younguns (and I guess granny too, someone
needs to watch the younguns). She'll be home in time for her
birfday bash, next week I think, at which the guests were told to
nosh before they come because the birfday bash will not include a
big feed this time as Mooch has not been home to tend to her garden
these past few weeks. Her first lady duties have been noticeably
absent to the detriment of the American civilization, but her staff
has been carrying on in her absence no doubt, keeping school lunches
safe from carbs and sugars.

Found some wheels on Benzworld for the SL500. Newer stock 17" wheels from a 99

Have to buy some new tires to fit them, as my current crappy stock 12 hole

Apple has made it clear they don't care about the professional market, they
make more money with phones and ipods.

FCP got dumbed down and people are calling the new Mac Pro the "trashcan" since
it looks like 3 rolls of black duct tape stacked together. My friend Seth was a
long time holdout and just before Christmas finally bought a new HP Z820 and
moved to Media Composer.

FCP has been dumbed down - er, simplified?  Stupid.  I still have a
machine with a 10 year old OS and software.  From back when it was
competition to Avid.

I keep meaning to delve into Cinelerra and some of the other Linux

the level of iMovie.
