Well, currently my wife is selling things on eBay with absolutely no problems.
They offer free listings or really cheap listings. Their shipping works nice,
ties into USPS, and you can print your labels easily. I agree that in the past
eBay has been a PITA, but they seem to have changed...maybe the economy has
forced it or whatever, but it's a nice thing to see. And PayPal has become more
agreeable to work with as I may move all my credit card processing to them as
well which should save a few dollars.
Anyway, just my view from what I currently see.

The only way to economically but a new car is to drive all of the value out
of it. You have to plan to keep it until you can no longer afford the
repairs. Otherwise, you're paying for quickly tarnishing bling.

grand gone.

To me it would be frustrating to be worried about a car like that.
Cars are there to get you from a to b and should not be worried about

My old merc is pretty reliable, probably more so than the average new

I don't really think any modern car will do 200k without having

The "lid switch" is in fact a lid switch and a "check switch" which is there in
case the lid switch gets stuck. Its the check switch that failed, its a little
microswitch, potted shut and exploded when I opened it, no way I can see to
reassemble without the case being closed, not sure how it was made.

Anyway the assembly is only $60, I'll just get another.

If it's a switch either force it open or force it close and the

If it then doesn't, there's probably something else amiss too.

I don't know about Foci, but the Contour/Cougar/Escort used to have an auto
tranny which would be considered used up by that mileage.

What about it? It's got 173k. Runs like a top and has been very reliable.
Worst thing I've had to do to it is replace two of the COPs. Had to do a rear
wheel bearing once, too, but that's about 20 minutes of work and under $100 of
parts from the dealer.

Been a really reliable car for me. Previous (original) owners appeared to be a
retired couple who split their lives between Rhode Island and Hudson, FL.
From the looks of the records during their ownership, most of the miles were
highway miles between here and Rhode Island.

Re: [MBZ] Fleabay is worthless

2014-02-03 Thread Dan Penoff
I am well aware of how they do it - it's the poor sap who is paying $35 for the
little envelope to get there tomorrow morning by 10:00 am that's more or less
subsidizing the rest of the business.

With FedEx, you also have the added benefit of contracting some services out,
like FedEx Ground. Those guys are franchisees, just like someone who owns a
Dunkin Donuts. They contract for the routes and the more they have, the more
they can make. And it removes the overhead for the parent company.

I haven't used UPS in years, as they are seriously uncompetitive with the other
services as far as I'm concerned. The USPS, while it bleeds cash, is really
stepping up with its Priority Mail service. I sent 11 convertible top
hydraulic cylinders in a large priority Mail box to Oregon. Cost me something
like $16, I dropped it off at the USPO on Friday afternoon it it was in Oregon
for delivery the next day. The cylinder guy did the rebuild on Monday, missed
the cutoff so they didn't go out from him until Tuesday, and I had them back in
my possession on Thursday.

All of that for roughly $30 round trip.

Of course the USPS has contracted their stuff out to the major air carriers for
years, so they're just leveraging their existing relationship with the airlines
for the stuff they don't transport themselves.

Re: [MBZ] Fleabay is worthless

2014-02-03 Thread Gary Hurst
it's because shippers like ups and fedex can seriously price segregate as
their marginal cost is miniscule compared to their overall (average) cost
for delivering a package.

let's start the penoff shipping company. dan penoff goes to walmart and
buys a huffy bicycle with a big baskets for $100. this bike is such a POS
that it only will last one day. 10 customers come to dan this day, each
with 1 pound packages going to the same place. he figures overall that his
time is worth about 20 bucks and he'd like some sodas for 5 bucks so $125
makes it work for him. he charged each customer $12.50 and everyone was
happy

as dan is loading up the bike, mr fergus mac bigshot comes by with 10 1
pound package. he wants to send them to the same address as the other 10
customers but he knows dan's jew tricks and won't pay that kind of big
money to ship them . dan explains that he is actually a lutheran and offers
to send them for $2 each. mr mac bigshot counters with 1 dollar each. dan
looks at his baskets and sees they are more than half empty and takes the
deal.

and this is how dan can sell something for a dollar that he needs to sell
for $12.50 and still comes out way ahead, because the cost of adding more
packages can literally be approaching zero, so anything you get paid to
deliver them is gravy

verstehest?

I assume most of the Canadians buying property in AZ hope it goes back
up in value to where it was a few years ago. Then they have the best of
both worlds - a vacation home in the south where it is warm, and a nice
gain because they bought low and may sell high. The down side of that is
the tax issues that go along with it.

[MBZ] OT got to love winter weather

2014-02-03 Thread Randy Bennell

Filled up the truck this morning.
Calculated my fuel mileage for this tank.
10.2 mpg and that is on an Imperal gallon. (I am old school - liters per
hundred kilometers is sort of meaningless to me althought the truck
calculates and displays the infor for that.)
Of course, so far January is the coldest in something like 24 years and
the snow is deep enough and often enough to encourage the use of 4WD on
a regular basis.
Plus this truck has command start so it has often made 0 mpg while
warming up in the mornings.
I tell myself that it is good for the truck to warm up a bit and thus
worth paying the tab but I would rather have it warm up some.
Paying the toll on the electric bill as well given both my truck and her
car have the block heaters plugged in every night.

Oh well, only another 2 or 3 months until spring.

Re: [MBZ] Anybody want some cheap reliable transportation?

2014-02-03 Thread Dan Penoff
I guess I'll leave money on the table. I would rather move it quickly than have
to wade through the tire kickers, lowballers, etc., that I would otherwise
encounter.

I need the driveway space. Bad.

The day a few years back I got hit by a Sprinter van (Benz content) while
on my bike, earlier I got buzzed VERY closely by an AT&T phone van, Sunday
morning, time and place known. On Monday morning I was in a very foul
mood and called AT&T HQ legal dept demanding the name of the driver so I
could get him charged for harassment under the bike law.

A very short time later the regional supervisor calls me, tells me he is
on it and will get back to me once he gets it sorted. Coupla days later
he calls, said he had met with the driver and his union rep. Driver
denied having done it. Supervisor shows him gps records, speeds ( slow
while following me then speeds up to pass and brakes in front of me then
speeds off) time, location, exactly as I had said. Union rep confers with
his boy, who suddenly had a memory reset. Driver on probation, please let
them handle it, etc etc.

I let it go but was quite impressed with the technology.

stopped for 53 seconds on a side street to talk to someone (there was
another worker in the van. who corroborated the story.)

Supposedly when they put GPS' in the District vehicles the union had the
District agree in contract that the GPS data could not be used to dismiss
an employee. Interestingly, the union didn't challenge this guy's
termination.

Hmm.

I used to have a 92 940 with a driver's air bag, and I probably still have

I'm still not convinced that a 240D is significantly more reliable than
many modern vehicles that receives similar care and attention, just it's
much easier to work on - and once you add a rats'-nest of controls for
safety and emissions retirements I'm not sure that advantage will still be

[MBZ] 123's, as in "Would you buy a new production 123?"

2014-02-03 Thread Jerry Herrman
This discussion reminds me of similar discussions of several generations ago
carried out in the "Letters To The Editor" section of magazines such as Popular
Mechanics and Popular Science; the car under discussion being the Ford Model A.
One reader would praise it and reflect that, if offered, he would buy a brand
new production Model A just like the one he (or his dad) used to own - with
absolutely no modifications or increase in price. Then someone would write in
to agree, but would insist on just one change - hydraulic brakes. Next, someone
would write in to say, for example, that a certain relative of his would still
be alive after a crash if the gas tank had not been right in front of the
driver, hence that modification would be necessay. After a few more urgently
needed modifications, the desired car would no longer be the old trusty
original Model A.
As for myself, I would consider a brand new production 123 or a Volvo 240 just
like mine, with no modifications - well, except for air bags, and I'd like
better fuel economy, so maybe just a small easy-to-replace inexpensive
computer. Oh, and some upgrades to the . . . . .
