No, the problem is obvious to many of us here in the south. The ghost
of an Irish leprechaun obviously got into his house, got thirsty, and
then got into his flight bag; hoping to find a better place wherever
Kaleb went.
The leprechauns spells and curses are what is causing all the problems.
I know the solution but I don't think Kaleb would want to try them.

Thanks for the clarify.
Yes, the steam gauge rigs require greater knowledge and experience of
airframe dynamics and I think that is forced out of the cockpit with
greater glass facilities and auto everything control and reliance on
that computer control. Same goes for cars and that is why I like the
3-pedal 240D - probably not unlike the steam gauge rig.

The larger the aircraft, the more it resembles "too many small parts flying

That's what happened to the Concorde but it crashed and burned.

I went to the DR back like 25 yr ago, the plane we were on (a 727 if I
recall) broke at Punta Cana and the crowd who supposed to leave couldn't
until the airline could muster a part and a mechanic and an airplane to
fly down there and fix the thing, which took another day or so. The
resort (Club Med) had to bus everyone somewhere else and put them up in
hotels, not sure who paid for that.

Working AC -- replacing the evaporator is a huge PITA. Probably 30%
failed.

Check for hard hoses when cold, this is a sign the head is cracked.
Not a deal breaker necessarily, but not all that cheap to fix.

Rear suspension -- if not done, all the links need to be replaced,
else it will stagger around and eat tires. Needs rear subframe mounts
too, probably.

Front suspension is due for new tie rods and drag link, probably new
idler arm bushings.

Must start easily at 0F, not rattle and knock, not use significant
amounts of oil.

Most of the rest is pretty straightforward.

All of this can be fixed, the only really hard stuff is the evaporator
or evidence of a cracked head.

The true moral of that story is that I want a good, well trained and
competent pilot on my plane, thank you very much.

Once the tire blows, the damage is likely already done.
If the pilots on his plane had any concerns about the landing, they may
well have preferred to do it in Atlanta rather than in the DR.
And, I suppose, if they felt any further damage might occur while flying
to the DR, then it was wise not to do so.

Since they landed safely, I am prepared to say they made a good decision.

Re: [MBZ] I'm back!

2014-02-13 Thread Jon Agne
Did you guys hear about the blown tire in Madrid a few weeks ago? A Delta
Boeing 767 hits a piece of metal on the runway just at rotation and tire #8
blows. The debris knocked a hole in the top of the right wing so the
passengers can see it. In the process of knocking that hole in the wing, it
severs the hydraulic lines for 2 of the 3 hydraulics systems: Cannot raise the
landing gear, Primary and alternate brakes inop….down to the brake accumulator,
no nose wheel steering, reverse thrust inop on right engine, normal flap
extension/retraction inop (must use backup electric motors), etc., etc.

The crew elects for an immediate return and performs a textbook heavy-weight
approach and landing to Madrid. Brake accumulator fails at approximately 80
knots on rollout (remember, no nose wheel steering) so Captain uses reverse
thrust on left engine to exit on a high speed taxiway and dribble off into the
grass.

No injuries.

The moral of the story: Blown tires in an aircraft are not to be taken lightly.

Just saying’.

I hope everyone is enjoying their winter storm! I have a fire going, and am
celebrating the fact that I am on off days!

I meant those of us actively posting in the thread, but yes, I'm slightly
younger than you. I am definitely not the youngest in banned.

To respond to Mao, I don't think the government is necessary for a currency
- that's Philip's contention, and he presumably only meant for fiat money.
I love the idea of Bitcoin, though I think the Liberty Dollar was a much
more rational experiment, and certainly there are plenty of
non-governmental banks and institutions I trust to deliver value in
exchange for sheets of paper. I just don't trust the government to let any
serious alternative currency survive when the way to kill it is so well
understood, and when it appears annoyingly difficult to trace to an
individual human. I certainly don't think communications will survive if
the government starts to crumble - that's the first thing they will kill.
You can look at the progress of the Arab Spring to see that.

I can think of a lot of reasons for the government to allow Facebook,
Google, etc. The fact that the tech sector has grown rapidly in some areas
does not mean the whole sector will do so. You may remember the troubles
Paypal had, and they were mostly in a well established space.

That's getting into politics so I'll back off. :)

"Driving" to DR reminds me: 'Bout ten years ago, while SWMBO was Director
of the local arts council, she often had help from inmates at the federal
minimum security prison on Seymour Johnson Air Force Base. One of the
inmates recounted to her one day the frustration he'd endured a couple of
days before in preparation for his imminent release. While preparing the
inmate's release papers, his counselor/advisor/clerk told him that a bus
ticket to his home town would be provided for him. Inmate tried to tell the
counselor that buses do not go to his home in Puerto Rico - he would need a
ticket to fly there. Counselor/clerk was adamant, though, "We provide bus
tickets - you'll take a bus like everybody else." They finally got it
worked out, but the inmate was nearly in tears trying to convince the
counselor/clerk that he really did need to fly to Puerto Rico - a bus would
not make it.

Dammed hard to drive to the Dominican Republic though...

Last spring the week before we were going to camp Angie was off to Arizona
with her aunt and cousin, big tour of the metaphysical...
I figured this meant I was going to go to camp on Friday and drive all the
way the hell back to Boston (400 miles) to get her on Monday or miss out on
the first 3 days of vacation. Turns out you can fly from Boston to Presque
Isle, Maine (on a jet no less) for $90 one way. Worked out real good. Such a
short flight that she texted me just before the door closed, I ate some

The boy in DC sent me a pic of his parking lot this morning with snow
covering the cars, then the daughter unit had to respond with her
parking lot in Greensboro NC snow covering the cars too. Neither place
can handle it. We only got rain here at the house, some of it was
trying to turn to "wintry mix" but that was mostly just a bit north, lot
of icing. My wife left yesterday morning to go to work at like 5:30 or
something, the bridges off the island were closed due to icing (we have
no capacity to spread any sand or salt) so she came back home. They
opened them later in the day after it warmed up a little bit so she went
in, but the big bridge from Charleston to Mt. Unpleasant is still closed
as ice has formed on the cables and as it melts it falls off and bombs
cars. 2 weeks ago 3 or 4 cars got windshields blown out by falling ice.

I feel like I am back in Boston again, it is about 32F-34F, damp and
rainy, bordering on the "wintry" mix but it is supposed to be near 60F
tomorrow so will wait until then.

Kaleb,
Can you just get out of town? Apparently, you have brought bad luck from OK.
Did you book your flight before this ice storm hit? Maybe we can blame this
storm on your bad luck as well :-) By now, you could probably have driven to
somewhere in TX and gotten a direct flight to the DR.
Several years ago, I did some contract work for Delta on processes. The airline
industry has some strange requirements that they cause and then they get
tangled with the FAA which only makes things worse. Between people limits,
baggage limits, fuel limits, etc., it's amazing they do as well as they do.
Anyway, I hope you get there and back home safely!

Re: [MBZ] Delta sucks

2014-02-13 Thread Curt Raymond
Interestingly Virgin America has very few male flight attendants.

Back before Southwest cut way back on flights I used to go Manchester, NH to
Vegas and Vegas to Burbank, then the reverse to go home. Leaving Burbank on
Friday afternoon headed to Vegas the plane would be about half full of
strippers headed there for the weekend. I sat with one woman and got talking. I
asked her where she was staying, she told me she didn't know yet but some guy
would doubtlessly pick her up. She was making a good living working 1 night a
week at a "bikini bar" (LA bars can only have topless women) and 2 nights in
Vegas.

Coming home was usually a horror show of the same girls ridden hard and put
away wet. I sat with 2 girls one time who'd had cocaine left over from their
weekend and decided to do it all just before going through airport security.
Halfway through the short flight they decided that their clothes were
uncomfortable and just took them off. So here I am sitting with 2 totally naked
maybe 21-22 year old women acting like its the most normal thing in the world.
One offered to take me to the restroom and "rock my world" but I declined.

Dammed hard to drive to the Dominican Republic though...

Last spring the week before we were going to camp Angie was off to Arizona with
her aunt and cousin, big tour of the metaphysical...
I figured this meant I was going to go to camp on Friday and drive all the way
the hell back to Boston (400 miles) to get her on Monday or miss out on the
first 3 days of vacation. Turns out you can fly from Boston to Presque Isle,
Maine (on a jet no less) for $90 one way. Worked out real good. Such a short
flight that she texted me just before the door closed, I ate some dinner,
jumped in the truck and she beat me to the airport.

My instructor used to say, "If you don't have time to drive, don't fly." I
had to pull that one on my father a few months ago when he was debating a
visit.  Being in a hurry causes you to make stupid decisions.

I did think those only applied to private piloting, though. :)

I used to do this on Northwest. When there was a delay and I wanted to get
upgraded, for example, I would wait until some really nasty person would rip
the gate agent a new one. Then I would swoop in right after and commiserate
with them.

Almost always worked.

I think it has more to do with trying to make a profit.  Airlines have
been mostly poor in that regard for years, so the mergers and high load
factors are attempts to build revenues and profits, with a lowering of
customer service and any semblance of pleasure in your flying, which
comes from saving a buck and shaving costs.  It has become like ridin
the dog but with smaller seats.

One thing to remember about flying that I learned early on.  That person
behind the desk or the FA on your airplane is the ONLY person who can
help you get what you need or want.  Treat him or her nicely and
respectfully and your chance of getting what you want/need goes up
exponentially.  Most of them are hating the way things are going worse
than you are because they have to deal with all the other jerks all day
long.  You would be surprised at what a kind word or a brief friendly
conversation might get you in the midst of madness all around.

have more interest because it is different and apart from gov't. I
despise gov't and I despise gov't as it presents itself today. I

Actually, the Liberty Dollar was the real recent experiment in non-fiat
money. At least those had intrinsic value. You can read about the
government shutting them down, but at least holders didn't get left with
nothing.

To some extent Bitcoin was the reaction to that, take the currency digital
and unmanageable so no single raid could kill it. As soon as communication
is interrupted there is literally no value to a Bitcoin; if you are going
for a post-government exchange medium you really need to find something
else. (If you think the next stage is a central world government that

you miss the point, tim. i'm talking conceptually here about an article to
a fellow who i now realize.doesn't seem to have read the article. i'm not
critiquing bitcoin or the article about it. i'm on about ideas that have
been presented, the concept of a very low cost way to transfer money with
no fraud risk assumed by the receiver, essentially making an online
transfer of money like a cash transaction. this is very appealing to
someone like me, both on a practical and ideological level. whether the
article is biased or not doesn't change the fact that a bitcoin style
instrument has legitimate applications and is not merely a took for
illegality (just as cash can be a tool for illegality, but often isn't)
