The trick is to clear the snow from the area through which the snowplow
will approach your driveway.

That way the plow will unload before it gets to your driveway and not
push snow across your driveway, which will then turn into ice. This extra
snow moving is best done by a snowblower.

The problem with that idea is that it does not work very well in our
narrow back lane with garages on either side.
We get the same issue out front but that just fills the sidewalk
entrance. I doubt I could move enough snow to prevent the big graders
from filling my sidewalk.
The real answer from my point of view is to move it quickly. If one is
home when the grader goes by, then it is not much of a problem.
If one tries to move the snow hours later, then one has to chop bricks
of snow out of the pile. Good for making an igloo of one is into that
sort of thing I suppose.

What I do out front (we have no back with which to be concerned) is to

The problem with that idea is that it does not work very well in our
narrow back lane with garages on either side.
We get the same issue out front but that just fills the sidewalk
entrance. I doubt I could move enough snow to prevent the big graders
from filling my sidewalk.
The real answer from my point of view is to move it quickly. If one is
home when the grader goes by, then it is not much of a problem.
If one tries to move the snow hours later, then one has to chop bricks
of snow out of the pile. Good for making an igloo of one is into that
sort of thing I suppose.

I had to clean the driveway which included moving the Jetta which Angie hadn't
done in last week's storm. It started right up and moved good but the coolant
leak appears to be worse than I'd hoped. Going to dolly it to the mechanic on
Monday.

Got in a real good snowmobile ride, headed over to the local snowmobile shop,
he's got a good trail in but had packed snow against the trail into a huge
pile. I'm not usually the trailbreaker and didn't judge how the pile was built,
ended up on a pile with one ski hanging out into space. If the pile hand't been
built so strong I'd have rolled right over.
http://i843.photobucket.com/albums/zz353/curtludwig/22D998E9-754E-4552-B343-85FEE3BDC211-619-00385488DF03_zps3238b3f3.jpg

Its hard to tell in the pic but the top of the seat is 6' off the ground...

Managed to get the sled off the pile by tugging on the ski and turning the
machine down hill instead of rolling it. Then it wouldn't start until I
realized I'd hit the kill switch when I thought it was rolling over. Heading
back out I did an X-Games style jump back over the pile and fell ass over
teakettle as the sled landed funny. Fortunately it didn't take off without me.

The rest of the ride was pretty uneventful until on the return trip I lost the
trail on a frozen pond where the wind had drifted the snow. Out in the 20
unpacked snow the sled tried to bog. I got way back on the seat and piled on
the power. The sled has a 670cc liquid cooled 2 stroke which makes something
like 90HP which is plenty for a 700# machine. With the weight shifted back and
the power piled on the skis lifted and we made it across the pond no problem.

So anyway, my 4th good ride in 3 years, planning on another ride tomorrow.

You burn coal? My parents have a very old coal stove from a railroad caboose, I
remember Dad pulling it out of the remains of the caboose in the woods behind
some guy's house.

We've got a Jotul woodstove but wood is kinda spendy and a lot of work compared
to coal. I saw a video on Vimeo about the Chubby stove http://chubbystove.com/
which looked real good. Unlike my parent's stove its got an ash pan and can be
shaken with the door closed keeping the ash under control.

I found a place nearby that has bagged coal for $310/ton. I've read that 1 ton
of coal equals 3 cords of wood. I'm thinking that 2 tons of coal would easily
heat our house with less work than wood and cheaper than wood or oil. The nice
thing is that it can still burn wood, lots of people give me wood so thats free
heat.

I've got Angie mostly convinced.

generator will run the pump and fridge.  Coal stoves will burn as long as
we can shovel a path to the coal pile just outside the back door.

Re: [MBZ] Snowpocalypse 2014

2014-02-14 Thread Michael Canfield
Hi Curt,
Yes we burn coal. I have had an Alaska stoker upstairs for years and an
old Fisher Papa Bear wood stove downstairs. I love wood heat but recently
stumbled on a deal on a Hitzer hopper stove. I took out the wood stove in
favor of the Hitzer. I like it so much I sold my Alaska and bought another
just like it for upstairs. Hitzer model 30-95, requires no electric to
burn, crank out heat like no tomorrow if you want or will burn 24 hours on
a 30 pound hopper on low. Shaker grates and a nice ash pan keep it neat.
2 of them are keeping a drafty 1800+ square foot farmhouse with almost no
insulation and an open12 foot balloon frame tin roof at 70 when it was 0F
out and burning about $12-15 worth of coal a day to do it. Not cheap, but
the house is drafty, the windows suck and we were burning a crapload of
wood and not staying as warm. We tend these twice a day and leave them
be.

I thought the Alaska was great until I got a real coal stove. The stoker
is noisy and requires electricity. I only need that for the fan to
circulate now so less on that bill by a little. The Hitzer is Amish made
and I have spoken with the owner of the company who will get on the phone
and answer any questions. They will also sell parts direct at a very good
price. Check them out at hitzer.com
