Re: [MBZ] was transmission rebuild / now vibration

2014-03-03 Thread arche...@embarqmail.com
Many of us on this list do the same as you regarding parts replacement.
I was thinking that the unmatched shocks might be causing the vibration.

Another question: How old are the rubber mounts; engine, transmission,
differential? Many vibrations can occur that we aren't aware of if the
mounts are in good shape. When the mount (mounts) are bad, all sorts of
vibrations can become noticeable. I've had that happen more than once
during the 40+ years I've been driving Mercedes.

With an ordinary, non-limited slip, non-Torsen differential, if both rear
wheels are turning at the same rate, as in driving down a straight, dry
road, they will go the speed indicated by the speedometer. If one wheel
is held still and the other is allowed to rotate freely, like with the
car on jack stands or with one wheel on ice and one wheel on dry
pavement, the wheel that is rotating will rotate with twice the speed
indicated by the speedometer. That's how an ordinary differential works.

If the accumulators have gone flat the suspension cannot move, and the
rear will bounce on the tires. You cannot jounce the rear of the
vehicle, only the tires flex.

You will not mistake this for anything else.

However, low suspension fluid WILL cause noise and vibration as there
will be air in the struts occasionally and they will knock just like
worn out shocks and ride mushy. I know, because I just added a quart
of fluid to mine. Cured the funny whine from the engine when cold, too.

One good shock and one worn out one can sometimes cause serious wheel
tramp, especially in solid axles (which are subject to all sorts of
ills independent suspension are not). If one has failed prematurely,
though, and the other is working well, you can replace them
individually, but only with exact matches. They are usually cheap
enough that pairs is not a huge extra cost and well worth it.

Hydraulic struts are a different animal, and can be replaced
individually if necessary. That said, it's unusual for one to leak
(always from abuse) and the other to be in very good shape, they
usually croak from excess dirt or driving for a long time with dead
accumulators.

Yes, exceedingly overdamped. Damped like replacing the springs with
a solid steel bar. The spheres are nitrogen-filled, they fail when all
the nitrogen has leaked out and they're full of incompressible fluid
instead.

That condition can ruin the struts. Blow out the seals, put
extreme stress on the ball joint at the end, etc.

The self-leveling rear shock is just a hydraulic cylinder and the
damping comes from the restriction in the plumbing to the sphere.

There is also a one-way flap valve in the piston head. There's a
ball joint at the bottom mount, those can wear and get loose.
They have wear mechanisms, but they should be very long-lived.
Seals are usually the first thing to go, and are not officially
replaceable. I (and others) have done it, though.

Anyway I was reminded of all this watching the delta video. not sure how
it is turning out down under with Qantas, but obviously this Norwegian guy

Personally I'll pay a bit more to keep the well trained, well fed, well

Here are some illustrations and explanations:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Differential_%28mechanics%29

Go down the page to functional description.

I think of the drive shaft turning the axles on the planetary gears.
When the planetary gear attached to one axle is stopped, the planetary
gear attached to the other axle starts spinning. Its motion (rpm) is
added to the motion (rpm) of the ring gear which is turning the whole
planetary assembly.

indicated by the speedometer. That's how an ordinary differential works.

Right, and the physics of how a differential is normally built, and
the usual engine rotation direction cause the right rear (driven)
wheel to turn/slip more if all things are equal. On the front drive

Don't worry had me confused as well, I knew I should have not skipped

Speaking of things I did not know cause I wasn't paying attention, did

However don't get too excited, the OM642 had some serious issues

Which leads me onto one of my pet hates, the geniuses who write crap on

am thinking MB is a brand name for Daimler, cooked up when Daimler and
Benz had to jump into bed together.
Anyway wikipedia articles relating to Daimler and it's stuff is full of

Also the claim that the G-wagen is Daimlers longest produced vehicle is

With an ordinary, non-limited slip, non-Torsen differential, if both rear
wheels are turning at the same rate, as in driving down a straight, dry
road, they will go the speed indicated by the speedometer. If one wheel
is held still and the other is allowed to rotate freely, like with the
car on jack stands or with one wheel on ice and one wheel on dry
pavement, the wheel that is rotating will rotate with twice the speed
indicated by the speedometer. That's how an ordinary differential works.

[MBZ] Leatherique

2014-03-03 Thread Dan Penoff
As we speak about suppliers and the level of service they provide (and how we,
as customers, place a value on that level of service) I would like to share an
experience I had today with George of Leatherique.

Disclaimer: I have known George for many years and always been a devoted
customer. I first heard about George and Leatherique products when I was
working the Daytona Harley-Davidson rally with my wife (she was an executive
with H-D at the time.) George was there demonstrating his products to bikers,
showing how it could restore and rejuvenate their leather jackets, chaps, etc.

As an aside George also mentioned what a great job it did on the leather in
cars such as Mercedes and Rolls-Royce. After his spiel I spoke with him about
being an MB enthusiast, and he promptly handed me 8 oz. bottles of Leatherique
and Prestine Clean. I used them on my 300SD's leather the next week when I got
home, and I was sold from that point on.

On to today

I ran out of Leatherique this weekend when I was going to treat the seats in my
R129. I got online yesterday and ordered a 16 oz. bottle of Leatherique (I
always seem to have plenty of Prestine Clean, for some reason.) When I got
ready to check out, I was a bit taken aback at the $15 charge for shipping,
along with a small ($1) handling charge.

OK, it's a liquid which requires special handling and probably needs to be
packaged securely, that's fair.

I get a shipping confirmation this morning and notice that the package is being
shipped via USPS Priority Mail. Hmm. That's a little fishy, considering that
USPS PM is quite a bit cheaper than UPS, and I also had no choice at checkout.
I'm thinking, is George doing a little profit taking here?

So I dropped George a note and asked him what was up.

Turns out he does normally use UPS, but with the weather of late they have not
been consistent with delivery. Rather than let the product languish on a
sorting belt or in the back of a UPS truck, he was shipping items USPS due to
their willingness to guarantee delivery.

Boy, did I feel stupid.

George was quick to assuage my guilt in questioning his practices, and was very
gracious in taking the time to explain things so I understood why he did what
he did. He also encouraged me to contact him in advance of my next order so he
could extend a courtesy discount, which I politely declined.

This is the kind of business that gets my money, regardless of the cost of
their products. Of course, their products are vey high quality as well. I
will be a Leatherique customer for life as a direct result of George's business
practices.

Re: [MBZ] Leatherique

2014-03-03 Thread Dan Penoff
Sort of.

The R129 seats are really nice to clean, as the seat bottoms come out of the
frames with two bolts. Makes servicing the seat motors and other stuff a piece
of cake.

Removing all that stuff is really only necessary on the older models, such as
the W126, W123, etc. The newer models don't have a lot of trim and fiddly bits
that interfere with waxing and cleaning.

I just spent $500 for two new trees in my yard. I could have bought them from
Lowes or Home Despot for far less, but I went to a local nursery who is well
known for their level of service instead.

The trees cost me about $260, and the balance was delivery and planting. They
planted both today.

My oldest son was home, and they went through all the care and feeding
information with him. When he explained that he wasn't the one who ordered the
trees, they called me and went through the whole explanation all over again.
They also left written instructions on the care of the trees and an assurance
that I could call them at any time, a week, month, year, several years,
whatever, and they would be happy to answer any questions and offer assistance
if needed.

Needless to say, I have two nice new trees in my yard, properly planted and
staked, and no mess or sore back to deal with. Money well spent.

up with it or I would ignore it. Not bitch about it all of the time.
Ignore a bully and they go away. Get mad and retaliate and they smile and
pick more. I don't have anything against you Gary, I just question your
reasoning for putting up with something that bothers you so much.

If the idea is to change all the bake fluid, start by suctioning out the
reservoir and filling with fresh.

Maybe, but I think it more likely that the rubber at the ends compressed
enough to allow free play there.

Is it possible though that the piston and inside of the cylinder can
wear over 100k or 200k or 300k miles to where there is some side play
that could allow the vibration to reach a harmonic? I am not in the
business to sell struts, but it seems like it is possible the old
strut might allow a vibration to occur where the newer strut does
not. We don't know the mileage in this case. Some things wear in
strange ways. I would expect it to be at the speed of tire rotation
 though.
