Not much exciting here, I'm updating courseware.

I did put a can of r134a in the Jetta on Wednesday which got the AC working.
Its not super cold (I can't find my AC thermometer) so I think it needs another
can. It still worked yesterday so if theres a leak its not a huge one.

[MBZ] Hot under the collar

2014-07-11 Thread clay
Froggy is having inconsistent cooling issues.

I was taking her for an italian tune up this past weekend. I meant to climb
the foothills of the Cascades about 32 miles out of town (seattle) doing 70mph.
I made it only 22 miles before I had to pull off because the temp was
climbing up to the red zone. Got to a service station and drizzled a gallon of
water over the block and rad to get temp down. I decided to head back home and
give it a better look.

No visible leakage. The system was holding pressure fine. I checked the oil
for water, but only found it to be black and nasty. This within 500 miles of a
change. I am suspecting the shop did not really change the oil. So, I gave it
all new oil.

Thermostat was changed, along with new hoses and water pump last summer. The
AC does not function, so that should have no impact on temps. I have replaced
the hood pad, and there are no cats living in the engine bay to add to the heat
soaking.

Transmission filter and fluids were change two years ago, about 2k miles.

Anybody have insight?

Check the function of the visco clutch and make sure the auxilliary
fan comes on at about 100C. With both of those out of action on a
steep grade, you will overheat.

Also check to make sure the bottom radiator hose has not gone soft.
They can collapse under high speed pump operation, starving the block
of coolant.

De-scale, de-oil the cooling system?

If the cooling system is up to snuff (which it appears to be, can you hold the
computer closer to the radiator?) then the problem has to be something adding
heat where it doesn't belong, timing maybe?

Does turning on the heat help?

This is the car that has had all sorts of issues is it not?
Timing and fuel mixture can be an issue with overheating if I am not
mistaken.
Too soon, too late, or bad advance mechanism, too rich, or too lean. All
of the above, some of the above etc. It all needs to work together.

Was the oil thin? Did it smell of fuel? Was there too much of it?

Apart from that, if the engine seemed to be running fine, then is the
rad plugged? Does the fan work? Is there anything missing on the vehicle
that should be there, like a fan shroud or an air dam under the bumper etc?
Is the coolant mixture ok? Too much or too little coolant with the water
can make for problems.
Some cars (not necessarily MBs) were built with marginal cooling to
begin with. Big motor, tight engine compartment, smog controls etc so
old age does not help them cope when they were not all that good when
they were new.

No teeth in Arkansas...
Mexico is a good place to get killed, theres a reason 50,000 young folks have
fled Central America to the US.

I think a blue state with high income taxes like MA would be a good choice for
a retiree since your income is low so would your tax burden. Move someplace
semi-rural like I do but I'm still close to a good hospital, have access to
some services etc.
NH would be a lousy choice financially, no income tax but they make up for it
in property tax.

[MBZ] Mercedes-Benz builds a glamper van

2014-07-11 Thread OK Don
K'leb NEEDS one of these ---

Designed by Westfalia-Werke http://www.westfalia-mobil.net/en/, renowned
for its classic “pop-top” Volkswagen van-conversion packages, the Marco
Polo relentlessly eliminates “roughing it” from the camping lexicon. Based
on the sleek new V-Class design, which was unveiled earlier this year and
effectively replaces the Viano and Vito vans, the stylish Marco Polo sleeps
four people, courtesy of a two-seat rear bench that morphs into a single or
double bed in seconds, and an upper berth that nests beneath an
electric-powered pop-up roof.

The Marco Polo might transform even a trip along the arduous Silk Road into
a pleasure excursion, thanks to amenities such as a kitchenette with two
gas burners, a sink, a 10½-gallon refrigerator, a 10-gallon fresh-water
tank, a 10½-gallon waste tank, a large wardrobe and a fold-away tabletop.
There’s even a swing-out, illuminated mirror.

Refined aesthetics come along for the ride, too, with porcelain-colored
furniture, roof and walls that create an aura of spaciousness; a replicated
yacht-decking floor; ambient LED lighting; and piano-black lacquered trim.
And to sate the need for speed, chose from several turbocharged
four-cylinder diesel engines that top out at 190 horsepower. Can an AMG
version be far behind?

Set to debut this month at the Caravan Salon http://www.caravan-salon.com/
in Düsseldorf, Germany, the Marco Polo is nimble, too, with a turning
radius of just under 39 feet, comparable to many luxury cars. Whether on
the road or at home for a driveway staycation, camping just got a whole lot
cushier.

Has the thermostat been tested to confirm it's working properly? It seems
that thermostats can fail early. Also if the radiator is old, it could be
partially blocked. What are the hose temps coming out of the radiator?

I have the opposite problem insofar that the TE won't get past 80 much,
should sit at about 82. May well have to pull the thermostat to see if it
is operating as it should.
Anyway we made it to Queensland and I am sitting here in shorts and T

Re: [MBZ] Similar Note - my 91 300D runing warmer -- **Was** Hot under the collar

2014-07-11 Thread LarryT
I have a question about temps and my 91 300D. Some may recall I just
replaced the radiator after the top hose nozzle broke as well as
replacing the water pump and T'stat gasket. While all leaks have
stopped the temp will go to just above the 80C mark by maybe 1/8 or so,
I'm thinking it's running just under 100C. Anyway, when driving, the
temp will slowly climb until it nears the unlabeled hash mark 1/2 way
between the 80C mark upper mark near the red zone (120C?) but it
rises no further than the unmarked hash mark because the twin fans in
front of the radiator kick in at that point and keeps it from getting
any warmer.

I've heard the comments that the fan clutch may not be working -- I hate
to replace the fan clutch on a _/*maybe*/_ - is there a way to know I
am fixing the problem? I've never been a fan of throwing parts at a
problem until it's fixed - that's not being a mechanic, only a parts
replacer ;-)

Surely everyone agrees with that approach?

Anyway, I found procedure # 20-310 which tells how to test the clutch by
running *the engine at 4000-5000rpm until the temp reaches 90-95C.
when it reaches that temp the speed of the fan coupling will be very
clearly heard to increase*.

It appears the sound of the fan moving more air will be very audible.

sound about right? Since a diesel has a redline around 4300RPM. I
would not want to run it above ~3800rpm for long - agreed?

This is the car that has had all sorts of issues is it not?
Timing and fuel mixture can be an issue with overheating if I am not
mistaken.
Too soon, too late, or bad advance mechanism, too rich, or too lean.
All of the above, some of the above etc. It all needs to work together.

Was the oil thin? Did it smell of fuel? Was there too much of it?

Apart from that, if the engine seemed to be running fine, then is the
rad plugged? Does the fan work? Is there anything missing on the
vehicle that should be there, like a fan shroud or an air dam under
the bumper etc?
Is the coolant mixture ok? Too much or too little coolant with the
water can make for problems.
Some cars (not necessarily MBs) were built with marginal cooling to
begin with. Big motor, tight engine compartment, smog controls etc so
old age does not help them cope when they were not all that good when
they were new.

[MBZ] SD radio comes on loud with new battery

2014-07-11 Thread David Kristin Gilmore
Not a big deal, but I wonder why the radio in my 83 300SD always
comes on full volume when I reconnect the battery and turn the ignition
switch to start the car. Even though the radio had been off when the
battery was disconnected. It is the original radio/tape player. I have
to be quick with the off button to avoid a huge blast of static. Once
turned off it will turn on and function in the normal way. And if the
battery hasn't been disconnected it always works normally.

When I got the car I disconnected the previous owner's car phone -
a big old Audiovox model. Could that be relevant? Thanks.

No bargains in red states for nice houses, you still gotta buy
carefully.

The secret, so far as I can tell, is to have a job with a real
retirement (fat chance these days) and to buy a house in a
neighborhood that will still be decent when you retire and PAY YOUR
HOUSE OFF rather than keep using for a line of credit.

Vast numbers of people lost their houses in the downturn because
they had not paid them off, just kept borrowing against them to
renovate and raise the value, leaving them with more debt than they
started with and now no job.

You might not have a McMansion with 6000 sq ft of space you will never
use, but if it's paid for and has no mortgage, you only have to pay
the property taxes and utilities to live there!

Re: [MBZ] Similar Note - my 91 300D runing warmer -- **Was** Hot under the collar

2014-07-11 Thread Peter Frederick
The fan must be stiff when cold and spin at engine speed when started,
then immediately slow down. It must also pull with significant air
flow at idle with the engine hot enough to engage it (about 85 C I
think).

Also, when hot, it must stop immediately when shutting off, and this
is the easiest test. When the temp is high enough to kick on the aux
fans, the engine driven fan must stop with less than a full rotation
when the engine is stopped. If it turns more than that, there is no
longer any oil in the clutch and it must be replaced.

Your symptoms are exactly that of a bad fan clutch.

Just curious, you had the pump replaced.. there was a big flap years ago about
some pumps not doing the job.  They were just designed wrong, and I believe
they were aftermarket pumps.  The true blue honest to goodness MB pumps were
typically priced under them as I recall, but for some reason shops did not go
to the source for the pump and that was not a good thing.
