[MBZ] Munich considers dumping Linux for Windows!
The German city of Munich, which famously adopted Linux and open source across its operations, may be about to reverse that decision. German newspaper /Süddeutsche/ reports http://www.sueddeutsche.de/muenchen/muenchner-stadtverwaltung-von-microsoft-zu-linux-und-zurueck-1.2090611 deputy mayor Josef Schmid as saying the city is considering the move because users often complain about the functionality available in open-source applications. The lack of an integrated contact, calendar and email application is cited as staff's chief gripe. The /Süddeutsche/ story also mentions a need to set up an external email server to allow the City's mobile devices to send and receive messages. So vociferous are the complaints that the city council will create an expert panel to assess the performance of its chosen software. Schmid is quoted as saying that if the panel recommends a return to Microsoft, he won't oppose that change. There are no German speakers in Vulture South or Vulture West, the /Reg/ offices working on this story, so we're reliant on machine translation and its nuance-stripping machinations. But even after we stuffed the story through three – Bing, Google and Babel Fish – the meaning came across as reported above. If Munich decides to revert to commercial software, the open-source movement will lose one of its most visible champions. Of course, since Munich decided to go with Linux back in 2004 and spend about 10 years http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/12/16/munich_signs_off_on_open_source_project/ installing it, open-source software has had innumerable wins – not least its widespread use in mobile devices, web servers, cloud infrastructure and many other fields. Losing Munich would therefore be a symbolic loss, but in many ways open-source code and Linux have long since won far more important battles. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2014/08/19/munich_dumping_linux_for_windows/ ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post. The Council says the use of open source software has yielded savings of more than EURO 10 million (more than $13 million). Karl-Heinz Schneider, head of municipal IT services, seems to endorse this view. He says it's no surprise that a new platform should temporarily generate more support requests, and he wasn't aware of any particular complaints. Microsoft announced last year that it was moving its German headquarters to Munich. This move is planned to take place in 2016. Re: [MBZ] MX Record Help
Yeah, I got it sorted out by changing back to the MX server address at 1and1. All seems to be well at this point. The real rub is the proper sequence of what steps to take when transferring an actively hosted domain. The process varies slightly from one provider to another, which is where I got screwed up. In fairness to 1and1, despite their crappy mail services, as soon as I talked to their support people they knew what to do and made changes in my hosting account that allowed the domain transfers to take place. GoDaddy has some complicity in this as well, as they encourage you to enable off-site DNS when you're transferring domains. While this makes it easy on their end for the transfer, they say nothing about it interrupting other services, such as mail, by doing so. GoDaddy is right that a third party is a good move, because you can put up a Temporarily out of order sign while you are dealing with making sure everything transferred correctly. This prevents someone from being halfway through a transaction during the transfer. This year he had The Butterbeans, from our little island, who as I listened I realized they were really good, like REALLY good, and wondered why I had never heard of them. At some point the girl singing said they had added a few friends to round out the band for fun, but usually just she and her husband played as Shovels and Rope. I had heard them before on the radio but had not seen them, so it was a real treat, and that explained why they were REALLY good. They are hitting the big time now (but apparently still living in a ratty little house up the road, when they are here) so if you like country/folk/rock sort of music, check them out. [MBZ] OT: One-of-a-kind air accident
Pilot’s artificial arm detached while landing Incident happened on British carrier Flybe during 47-passenger flight from Birmingham to Belfast, says air-accident agency LONDON — A British air accident report has recounted how a pilot lost control of a passenger plane after his artificial arm became detached during landing. The report says the incident took place as the Flybe flight from Birmingham, carrying 47 passengers, was approaching Belfast City Airport in gusty conditions in February. The 46-year-old pilot had shortly before checked that his prosthetic lower left arm was securely attached to the yoke clamp, but as he performed a maneuver just before touchdown the limb became detached. The Air Accidents Investigation Branch said Thursday he then moved his right hand to the yoke to regain control. Winds caused the plane to land heavily with a bounce. No one was hurt in the incident. http://seattletimes.com/html/travel/2024309787_pilotartificialarmxml.html I wonder if he could even get a private pilots license in the U.S.? Re: [MBZ] Holy crap why is it every time the green car comes along it is not way too much money
Tis an odd one, looks like a basic Euro version with stupid US stuff bolted on. Anyway I don't think the price is outrageous, if the mileage is correct and everything checks out. Rustfree, well that may not be true. From what I have seen the 123 has long since moved off the bottom of the depreciation cycle, the better 124's are moving up and the 210 is just about at the bottom. 123's are now selling based on condition, not age. Many an article extolling the virtues of the 123 out there, especially the oil burners. And what about that mob that specialise in selling 123's for crazy prices? I really think this is a car for someone who appreciates the 123 chassis and not some nutjob who is going to whack in some homebrew cooking oil still in the boot. Also consider how many miles that thing will go before needing serious work. You buy a 3k 123 with issues and 200k miles, how much you gonna spend to get it into that sort of shape? To me the big ticket items are paint and rust because I can't do them myself to a satisfactory standard. Hendrik who likes that 123, except for the US stuff On 20/08/14 07:51, Kaleb C.
