The wattage on all those lights is pushing the limits of most dimmers which is 400-500W. Plus most dimmers are crap anyway, so that is what happens. Lutron seems to be a better brand, save your receipts and return them when they fail. I have been buying LED bulbs at Costco and they have fairly decent light, fairly warm but not pink or yellow. I am getting ready to make lighting for my new kitchen and decided on LED spots on GU-10 bases. I bought a bunch of different ones from DealExtreme, chinee stuff, and made a little prototype with 3 different bulbs of varying color temp and brightness. They are REALLY bright and so far seem to be holding up OK. I have 3 in a strip, 2 sorta yellow 3500K and one white 6500K which gives a nice mix of light. http://www.dx.com/p/lexing-lx-019-gu10-6w-600lm-6500k-48-smd-2835-led-white-spotlight-bulb-silver-230046 http://www.dx.com/p/gu10-7-5w-720lm-3500k-15-5630-led-warm-white-light-spotlight-ac-85-265v-186591 http://www.dx.com/p/gu10-6w-300lm-6500k-3-led-white-light-lamp-bulb-silver-85-265w-179126 Lower temp is yellower and higher is whiter, sort of a preference but I like the lower more natural color, not as harsh. I am thinking LED are the way to go now, but not all of them allow dimming. Some of the GU10 spots are dimmable but the ones I got aren't. The prices are coming down and the supposed longevity kinda tips the balance over the low-watt incandescents and curly bulbs. Re: [MBZ] Off Topic - Reliable electric dimmer switch
I've never used a dimmer on anything but full brightness, especially in the kitchen or bathroom. In the kitchen if I want less light I turn on fewer lights. In the bath if my wife wants less light she lights candles. I've just never seen the usefulness of dimmers. For LEDs I've got a couple Cree brand, one in 60w equivalent and one in 75w. Both are great and I won't hesitate to buy more. I'm waiting for the CF bulbs I bought to get dim or fail. The really good Phillips ones I bought for $20 each 15 years ago are still going strong but the cheap spiral ones only last maybe 5-8 years. As they die I'll get more of the LEDs. I'm particularly excited to try LEDs in the garage. CFs don't like the cold and don't particularly like base up fixtures. I've got two 100w equivalent units out there that light the space well once they get warmed up but when its real cold the warm up time is in tens of minutes. -Curt From: Rich Thomas via Mercedes mercedes@okiebenz.com To: mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Saturday, September 6, 2014 9:33 AM Subject: Re: [MBZ] Off Topic - Reliable electric dimmer switch The wattage on all those lights is pushing the limits of most dimmers which is 400-500W. Re: [MBZ] Off Topic - Reliable electric dimmer switch
good, long lasting, and reliable dimmer Best dimmer I've ever used is a Variac. Won't fit in a wall box, though. The inline Triac circuits are inherently a bit crippled, without a good ground reference. The available heat-sinking in a wall box is also limited. So, unstable circuit configuration combined with poor mechanical design means it's possible to _never_ get what you'd like. Remember that white LED's are still fluorescent lights, so they will exhibit a half-life type of light falloff, too, along with color shift. But they should be immune to the cold, and flickering issues of gas-discharge fluros as they age. I'm with the turn-on-more-lights crowd. We have two dimmers in the house, besides the variac in the bedroom. The chandelier over the former dining room table site has one, the flame-tip incandescent bulbs can be set to a nice candle-like ambience, or else full on for light. Regular incandescents tolerate this well. Halogens don't like to be dimmed, the halogen cycle doesn't work unless the quartz envelope is at full temperature. The other dimmer is over where the desk used to be. It was a central nightlight position in the house. Regular incandescent. Could just use a small nightlight instead. Mostly I dislike the dimmers, and now they're rarely used. The variac gets use, it's extremely good at working down on the dim less-than-a-candle end of things. We have a 100W reading light a nd a string of Christmas lights on it. You can run it up to read, or turn off that light and dim the string down to the barely-visible nightlight zone. And it's quite, no filament buzzing at low light levels. I never have it set at 100%, the bulb is yellower and lasts a _lot_ longer down at 80% or so. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post. I've got a smart ED, and the limited range is fine for me. If I were always charging it at home (as opposed to at the train station...) I would be paying less than $4/100mi in electricity. For the most part it handles like it has sport suspension, and corners exceptionally well (due to the battery pack being under the floorpan), but it can be rough on dips/potholes and speed bumps. I believe it would be possible to get serious air time off of one of the traffic calming speed humps... Time for a General Wee paint job/wrap? (See http://facebook.com/generalwee for a photo...) [MBZ] Accel Linkage
Hi Ya'll - One of the Ball/Socket connections going to the Injection Pump started to pop off. Happened twice in 2 weeks and while it's not a huge deal for me, my wife doesn't like it when going to/from work - which is normal. So I ordered a new one and replaced it today - because of the location I had to remove the intake manifold. A royal PITA. Anyway, finished this morning and to test things I started it in the garage for maybe 10 seconds at the most and turned it off. Normally it stops instantly but this time it ran for another 5 seconds before stopping. I looked for any vacuum connections I may have left disconnected or knocked loose. Didn't find anything - Any suggestions of what I might look for? Which is why the electrician who wired our kitchen insisted on running a neutral to the light switch box. I'm with the turn-on-more-lights crowd. Hear, hear! Re: [MBZ] Accel Linkage
Check the condition of the rubber connector and the plastic line going to the shutoff, and the condition of the connection of the supply line at the main vacuum line. All that plastic line gets brittle, and it's not than unusual to flex a portion of it when working on something else and have it crack part way through, giving you a vacuum leak. The rubber rots, too, and flexing it can cause it to leak. [MBZ] A three-fer
Angie took the Jetta to work this morning and didn't even make it to the main road before the low oil pressure buzzer came on. We pushed it home with the new Dodge which she took to work. I found that the wire to the oil pressure switch had come out of a splice I'd put in it. The wire was short so I spliced in a new piece of wire. One problem solved. Took it for a ride and the weird noise that went away when pushing in the clutch is gone, hurray for Redline MTL, or at least for having the proper amount of oil in the gearbox. Two problems solved. Since the predicted thunderstorms hadn't started yet I swapped the Car Quest brake pads out of the 190D. When I complained my Car Quest guy gave me a great price on Pagid pads. Other than one caliper fought me for getting the outer pad in everything went smooth. No more squeaky 190D brakes and hopefully no more squeaky wife complaining about them. Three problems solved, time for an ice coffee and some lunch! -Curt ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post.
