[MBZ] Oil leak gone?

2014-09-15 Thread dseretakis--- via Mercedes
I run Mobil 1 5W40 in my 82 240D. I have been doing so for the 5 or so years
that I've owned it. It has always had a pretty significant oil leak as
evidenced my a mess on my driveway.
The past couple of weeks the oil leak seems to have stopped! How can this
happen?

[MBZ] 190D rear suspension

2014-09-15 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I've complained about the rear suspension my '84 190D off and on since I got
it. That said the trip to and from ChowdaQ was so bad I need to finally either
do something about it or get rid of the car.

The problem: When accelerating from a stop when the car shifts gears the rear
end torques to one side, usually the left. When heavily loaded (like going to
ChowdaQ with a trunk load of cooking supplies) the rear end feels generally
squishy.

When I got the car on the road back in early 2010 I bought a full set of rear
links from Rusty and had them installed. Shocks are the same age as are
subframe bushings. This problem has been around since back then when all this
was done, none of the above (rear links, shocks or subframe bushings) has made
any difference in the problem.

So how do I go about figuring out what needs doing? I'm thinking I should test
stuff before I just go replacing. When I did brake pads the other day I did
wiggle stuff around and didn't see anything obviously loose or wiggly...

Re: [MBZ] Old crash pics

2014-09-15 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
I suspect that a side slide into a pole like that at high speed would be
lethal in just about any vehicle.
A few years back, I saw a Ford Aerostar van in a junk yard that had
taken a hard hit on the passenger side just behind the front door.
I have no idea what it hit or what hit it, but I was surprised by the
damage. The intrusion went almost all of the way to the other side of
the van.

I would not have wanted to be a passenger in the back part of the vehicle.

Re: [MBZ] 190D rear suspension

What sort of rear suspension does it have? Struts or coils?
Basically, given what you have already done without improving it, I have
to think either that the springs are bad or the alignment is out, or both.

Any evidence that the vehicle has had damage from an accident in its past?

Re: [MBZ] 190D rear suspension

2014-09-15 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
There is some indication of a possible accident but I've been doing some
research, the link replacement kit replaces 4 of the 5 links in the rear
suspension. The last is the lower control arm which has bushings at both ends.
I think whats happening is the rear wheels are allowed to tilt in and out by
bad bushings which would explain the torque feeling I'm getting on acceleration.

I found this helpful write up: Pelican Mercedes-Benz Tech Article - Replacing
Your Rear Lower Control Arm Bushings - Mercedes Benz - 190E, W124, W126, W201,
W123
and emailed the Hurst to see what brand bushings I want.

They reference a tool to get the old outer out and new one in. Does anybody
have the tool or know if its really required?

Re: [MBZ] commuting by bicycle

2014-09-15 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
The most pragmatic approach would be to ride to the bus stop, put the bike
on the bus' front rack, ride 5 miles to the bike path, and then ride the 9
miles from there to my office opposite Nationals Park. BTW, I boldly
predict that the Nats will win the World Series to the shock and dismay of
all baseball pundits, none of whom takes the team seriously.

On Fri, Sep 12, 2014 at 1:00 PM, ernest breakfield via Mercedes
mercedes@okiebenz.com wrote:

Andrew could best answer that, but i was thinking he's in the DC area, and
if he's going into the office in Foggy Bottom, i don't recall much around
there that's not flat. (even places like Capitol Heights and Oxon Hill
aren't more than a couple-hunnert feet elevation. you can get closer to
400' out toward Bethesda, but that's on the far end of the commute range he
 described.)
yes, i recall some of the hills in that part of the world can be short
and fairly steep, but modern bicycle gearing goes so low that it makes easy
work of those; Granny Gears are your friend. Sit and Spin!;-)

(disclaimer; my perspective may admittedly be a bit skewed; i can
hardly do a recreational ride around here of over an hour or 2 that doesn't
involve a couple thousand feet of climbing. i've been doing this for fun
since i started on Extended Touring bikes carrying all my camping gear, so
 i'm pretty comfortable with Granny.)

all that said, if someone's got to wear the PA Ave uniform to work,
this admittedly might not work in the high temps and humidity that that
area is plagued with. i used to deal with a similar situation by driving in
once or twice a week to carry office clothes in, so i could ride in the
rest of the time in something more cycle-friendly.

Re: [MBZ] Generator doesn't generate

2014-09-15 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
Yesterday I bought a generator that 'acts like the choke was stuck on and then
it dies', then the seller broke the starter rope before I got there so I
couldn't even check it for compression.

Turned out the rope wasn't broken, just untied, and was a string trimmer rope
much thinner and shorter than it should be for an 11hp generator. 5 minutes to
restring the starter.
Wouldn't spark until I cleaned the soot fouled plug, then started on the 2nd
pull and blew soot out of the exhaust. Ran great for 10 seconds after I shut the
fuel off. Fortunately I finally came to my senses and checked the air filter
before tearing the carb apart. I've never seen a filter so badly clogged, it's
difficult to blow through, let alone try to get it to pass 11hp worth of air.
Generator runs great without the filter. Makes sparks with a half hearted tug on
the rope, starts so easily I might not bother to put the proper rope on it.

Again, does anybody know anything about Wacker generators?
I'm hoping they're the MBZ of generators, but I'd never heard the name before
last weekend.

Mitch.

Mitch Haley via Mercedes wrote:
The 11hp Wacker/Honda I bought today has a three wire 240v outlet, I
have yet to determine whether the ground can be used as a neutral. The
seller got it from a storage unit auction 8 years ago, so it must be at
least 10 years old, haven't looked for the data plate yet.

Does anybody know anything about Wacker generators, other than they're
super expensive? Looks like internet price on my Wacker 5.6 is about
$2600 plus $200 for the wheel kit. I'm hoping the quality and durability
is super high, like Snap-On hand tools or old Mercedes-Benz. Mine looks
somewhat beat, but the Honda engine still has excellent compression.

For about 70 years there was one program that did pay for itself and provided
an income stream to the US Congress. It took the lives of many men and women
to build it, but in 1914 it commenced operation and until around 1985 it still
produced a stream of dollars. A Democrat gave it away.

The Panama Canal Company funded schools, stores, theaters, housing, social
service programs, public roads and buildings, as well as administering the
canal itself. Not bad by itself, but every year the program also sent hundreds
of thousands of dollars back to Congress. That all dried up when Carter gave
the canal away.

That stupid move cost us a war in Panama, loss of control in this hemisphere,
and gave China a very large foothold to upset global balance since 1981 when
they took over the largest Free Zone in the world on the Atlantic side, then
moved to become the silent operator of the Canal.

With all of the statistics and claims made about gun ownership, no one
 has
mentioned the huge number of people SAVED through the defensive use of a
gun each year. You'll never read about it in the main stream media but
 there
have been several studies done that indicate numbers between 500,000 and
2,000,000 per year in the US. Here's an excerpt from just one, a CDC
 study
ordered by Obama in Jan 2013:
Defensive uses of guns by crime victims is a common occurrence, although
the exact number remains disputed (Cook and Ludwig, 1996; Kleck, 2001a),
the study reads. Almost all national survey estimates indicate that
 defensive
gun uses by victims are at least as common as offensive uses by
 criminals,
with estimates of annual uses ranging from about 500,000 to more than 3
million per year (Kleck, 2001a), in the context of about 300,000 violent
 crimes
involving firearms in 2008 (BJS, 2010).
Guns are a tool, a great way to level the playing field that allows the
 weak
and small to defend themselves from the thugs. Remember, the courts have
stated numerous times that the police have no duty to protect you.

Curt,

For the lower link (aka spring link) outer bushing, I've seen a write-up
for making your own tool, but I wouldn't recommend it. I bought the Sir
Tools version of the special tool, about $110 IIRC, it worked fine with one
caveat: you must have it lined up perfectly straight, or you will break the
tool. This means you may have to bend the brake shield slightly to get a
straight shot.

The inner bushing is a real pain, took me way too much time to replace that
by making my own puller. If you have access to a hydraulic press, go for.
If you don't, I'd recommend buying a new spring link, which comes with a
new bushing installed.

How old is this thing?

Wacker is a company that makes concrete finishing and related equipment. They
offer brand labeled stuff they don't make themselves from time to time.

This I know because Kohler brand labeled portables for them many years ago. The
funny part is that these were very specialized machines, producing 120VAC at
180 Hz. They were used to run some sort of vibratory concrete finishers, the
things with the big paddles that are used to finish large slabs.

Every once in a while we would get a call from someone who had bought one of
these, usually at an equipment auction, asking about reconnection. You could
use them for anything that wasn't frequency sensitive, but boy, oh boy, don't
plug an electric clock into one.

Turned out the rope wasn't broken, just untied, and was a string trimmer rope
much thinner and shorter than it should be for an 11hp generator. 5 minutes
 to restring the starter.
Wouldn't spark until I cleaned the soot fouled plug, then started on the 2nd
pull and blew soot out of the exhaust. Ran great for 10 seconds after I shut
the fuel off. Fortunately I finally came to my senses and checked the air
filter before tearing the carb apart. I've never seen a filter so badly
clogged, it's difficult to blow through, let alone try to get it to pass 11hp

Generator runs great without the filter. Makes sparks with a half hearted tug
on the rope, starts so easily I might not bother to put the proper rope on it.

I suspect it helped that the 300D was not fixed and moved with the van.

Re: [MBZ] Old crash pics

1.) Because they're not making them for models produced before 1990

2.) Other than the fuel tank and battery, both of which are in common
locations, your W123 has no explosive devices like air bags or squibs for
locking the seat belts

The idea behind these is to let rescue/extraction folks know where the nasty
stuff is in the car so they don't set it off with their Hurst tools. MBUSA has
a good video about this on their website. I have to admit it never occurred to
me that there's all sorts of nasty stuff buried in newer model cars. In the
video a fire rescue guy talks about what it would be like if they were trying
to remove you from a wrecked vehicle and they set off a side airbag in the
process. Ouch.

Re: [MBZ] Old crash pics

2014-09-15 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Years ago a kid ran his car across my parent's yard totaling both their cars,
this was after skating between a telephone pole and guy wire. If he'd hit the
pole or wire very bad things would have happened. The police estimated his
speed when he left the road at 70mph. Surprisingly he survived with nary a
scratch.

Re: [MBZ] Oil leak gone?

2014-09-15 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Nope, max speed under its own power is 86.5mph. I was telling the story at
ChowdaQ how when I used to commute in a 240D I would get on 495 west of Boston,
put my right foot to the floor and keep it there until I got to my exit. It'd
hit 86.5 on the downhills and since the hills up were only slight I'd only lose
down to maybe 80. Never had any problems with carbon in that engine.

There used to be a kid across the street with an RX7 that thought he could

Gross generalization is the enemy of accuracy.
The original Scout had an I4 of a displacement I can't remember (152?). Later
models got a larger I4 (194?), then the 288 V8, 304 V8 and 345 V8. Also not to
be forgotten was the Nissan 3 liter I6 diesel.

All of them were slow turning as was the practice in tractor engines...

Have you ever seen how big the engine is in one of those things? Only
345 cubes if I recall but a huge beast of an engine.
My father had one in a 5 ton truck.
I also knew a fellow who had a Travelall - the IH version of a Suburban.
It was sort of funny because he had hot rod Plymouth cars before he got
married and as soon as they had children, he swapped for the Travelall.

Oh geez. If it's like here you should be able to sell it to whoever you want.
If you are a poos maybe you should take it to a gun shop and see if they want
to buy it. You may get only half value or less that way but you won't have to
deal with it since it sounds like you know nothing about guns.

What state do you reside in? You need to know the state laws and a good
place to find that information is your local gun store. The owner will be a
FFL license holder and should be well versed on private exchanges of
ownership , thus a good resource to draw from.

You will want to find an actual gun shop, not the gun counter at your local
WalMart, I believe.

In the alternative, this author is a personal friend of mine and has

The other question I had was how to establish value? I suspect there are

When you know what it is and what condition it's in, you search Gunbroker.com
and see what they're selling for.

In Indiana or Florida you advertise it and sell it.

In police states like Michigan it would have been more complicated if it were a
handgun. In police states like NJ, NY or IL selling even a shotgun is not a
totally trivial matter.
Quite often guys will meet in a busy McDonald's parking lot if they don't like
strangers in their home.

This is another example where the US national media ignores gun stops
crime events and the only coverage is in very local or foreign media. The
Daily Mail seems cover these often. The national gun magazines typically
include dozens of examples in an Armed Citizen section of each issue.

Here's local coverage of one recent event I recall which is only a few miles
up the road from me:
http://www.wral.com/homeowner-shoots-intruder-in-vance-county-break-in/13638
825/. The only unusual part of this story is the homeowner used a carbine
instead of a shotgun or handgun.

If you google jonathan haith shooting, you won't find any (so-called)
mainstream press coverage except two local TV stations.

you could join to sell it. As far as value depends on what it is. Ifs it run of

[MBZ] OT: A little wiring

2014-09-15 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
My Cub Cadet tractor was getting slow to start last winter requiring a shot of
ether most every time I plowed snow with it. I thought the problem was slow
cranking so I measured the voltage drop at the starter/generator, 4v! It didn't
get any better just cleaning connections so I dug deeper.

Both battery cables were 10ga which I'd consider slightly undersized. They're
probably fine, its only a 7hp 1cyl engine after all but I figure overkill is
just good enough.
The wire from the battery to the switch (a simple push button, no relay) had a
splice which took it from 10ga to 12ga. The splice was really ratty looking
too. I replaced it with some 8ga wire Fred had given me for my 240D (MB
content). I also made up a new ground cable. I wanted to run a new wire from
the switch to the starter/generator too but ran out of ring terminals.

Drop at the starter/generator is now less than 1v, much better! Tractor starts
much more easily now with proper power to the starter. Not a bad lunch break.

Sounds like years ago when I worked in a rental and fabrication shop. We had
loads of welding cable that went out for rent, and often came back in a
condition that required us to cut off the camloc connectors and make up new

This gave us some nice scrap pieces that were perfect for battery cables

We also had both large copper crimp and solder lugs as well.

I put a set of these wires on a VW I had and the starter spun so fast you
barely hit the key and the engine was running.

Best example of voltage drop I ever saw.

Marshall and I had an argument back when I was trying to commute with an '83

an absolute waste of time. I was trying to get every possible advantage, which
is why I was using 0w40 oil...

In retrospect the battery cables on a 240D aren't really all that long. I was
basing my idea on the cables on my '52 Farmall which is 6v and has 000 cables
but the lead to the starter is 3 feet long and 6v can't tolerate much voltage
drop.

Excellent point Hendrik, calling them defense rifles [American spelling]
rather than assault weapons.

The term assault rifle is one manufactured by the largely anti-self
defense crowd to do exactly what you speak to, stir up emotion, and draw
attention away from the useful effect of being able to defend ones self.

That was used to full effect in Australia to the point where personal
ownership of the means to defend yourself has been removed. To us Yanks,
