[MBZ] 190D rear suspension
I've complained about the rear suspension my '84 190D off and on since I got it. That said the trip to and from ChowdaQ was so bad I need to finally either do something about it or get rid of the car. The problem: When accelerating from a stop when the car shifts gears the rear end torques to one side, usually the left. When heavily loaded (like going to ChowdaQ with a trunk load of cooking supplies) the rear end feels generally squishy. When I got the car on the road back in early 2010 I bought a full set of rear links from Rusty and had them installed. Shocks are the same age as are subframe bushings. This problem has been around since back then when all this was done, none of the above (rear links, shocks or subframe bushings) has made any difference in the problem. So how do I go about figuring out what needs doing? I'm thinking I should test stuff before I just go replacing. When I did brake pads the other day I did wiggle stuff around and didn't see anything obviously loose or wiggly... -Curt ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post. Re: [MBZ] Old crash pics
I suspect that a side slide into a pole like that at high speed would be lethal in just about any vehicle. A few years back, I saw a Ford Aerostar van in a junk yard that had taken a hard hit on the passenger side just behind the front door. I have no idea what it hit or what hit it, but I was surprised by the damage. The intrusion went almost all of the way to the other side of the van. I would not have wanted to be a passenger in the back part of the vehicle. Re: [MBZ] 190D rear suspension
What sort of rear suspension does it have? Struts or coils? Re: [MBZ] 190D rear suspension
There is some indication of a possible accident but I've been doing some research, the link replacement kit replaces 4 of the 5 links in the rear suspension. The last is the lower control arm which has bushings at both ends. I think whats happening is the rear wheels are allowed to tilt in and out by bad bushings which would explain the torque feeling I'm getting on acceleration. I found this helpful write up: Pelican Mercedes-Benz Tech Article - Replacing Your Rear Lower Control Arm Bushings - Mercedes Benz - 190E, W124, W126, W201, W123 and emailed the Hurst to see what brand bushings I want. They reference a tool to get the old outer out and new one in. Re: [MBZ] commuting by bicycle
The most pragmatic approach would be to ride to the bus stop, put the bike on the bus' front rack, ride 5 miles to the bike path, and then ride the 9 miles from there to my office opposite Nationals Park. BTW, I boldly predict that the Nats will win the World Series to the shock and dismay of all baseball pundits, none of whom takes the team seriously. Re: [MBZ] Generator doesn't generate
Yesterday I bought a generator that 'acts like the choke was stuck on and then it dies', then the seller broke the starter rope before I got there so I couldn't even check it for compression. Turned out the rope wasn't broken, just untied, and was a string trimmer rope much thinner and shorter than it should be for an 11hp generator. 5 minutes to restring the starter. Wouldn't spark until I cleaned the soot fouled plug, then started on the 2nd pull and blew soot out of the exhaust. Ran great for 10 seconds after I shut the fuel off. Fortunately I finally came to my senses and checked the air filter before tearing the carb apart. I've never seen a filter so badly clogged, it's difficult to blow through, let alone try to get it to pass 11hp worth of air. Generator runs great without the filter. Makes sparks with a half hearted tug on the rope, starts so easily I might not bother to put the proper rope on it. Again, does anybody know anything about Wacker generators? I'm hoping they're the MBZ of generators, but I'd never heard the name before last weekend. Mitch. Mitch Haley via Mercedes wrote: The 11hp Wacker/Honda I bought today has a three wire 240v outlet, I have yet to determine whether the ground can be used as a neutral. Does anybody know anything about Wacker generators, other than they're super expensive? Looks like internet price on my Wacker 5.6 is about $2600 plus $200 for the wheel kit. I'm hoping the quality and durability is super high, like Snap-On hand tools or old Mercedes-Benz. For about 70 years there was one program that did pay for itself and provided an income stream to the US Congress. It took the lives of many men and women to build it, but in 1914 it commenced operation and until around 1985 it still produced a stream of dollars. A Democrat gave it away. The Panama Canal Company funded schools, stores, theaters, housing, social service programs, public roads and buildings, as well as administering the canal itself. Not bad by itself, but every year the program also sent hundreds of thousands of dollars back to Congress. That all dried up when Carter gave the canal away. That stupid move cost us a war in Panama, loss of control in this hemisphere, and gave China a very large foothold to upset global balance since 1981 when they took over the largest Free Zone in the world on the Atlantic side, then moved to become the silent operator of the Canal. clay On Sep 13, 2014, at 5:41 PM, G Mann via Mercedes wrote: A shocking and much overlooked fact. Almost all national survey estimates indicate that defensive gun uses by victims are at least as common as offensive uses by criminals, with estimates of annual uses ranging from about 500,000 to more than 3 million per year (Kleck, 2001a), in the context of about 300,000 violent crimes involving firearms in 2008 (BJS, 2010). Re: [MBZ] 190D rear suspension
Curt, For the lower link (aka spring link) outer bushing, I've seen a write-up for making your own tool, but I wouldn't recommend it. I bought the Sir Tools version of the special tool, about $110 IIRC, it worked fine with one caveat: you must have it lined up perfectly straight, or you will break the tool. This means you may have to bend the brake shield slightly to get a straight shot. The inner bushing is a real pain, took me way too much time to replace that by making my own puller. If you have access to a hydraulic press, go for. If you don't, I'd recommend buying a new spring link, which comes with a new bushing installed. Re: [MBZ] Generator doesn't generate
How old is this thing? Wacker is a company that makes concrete finishing and related equipment. They offer brand labeled stuff they don't make themselves from time to time. This I know because Kohler brand labeled portables for them many years ago. The funny part is that these were very specialized machines, producing 120VAC at 180 Hz. They were used to run some sort of vibratory concrete finishers, the things with the big paddles that are used to finish large slabs. Every once in a while we would get a call from someone who had bought one of these, usually at an equipment auction, asking about reconnection. You could use them for anything that wasn't frequency sensitive, but boy, oh boy, don't plug an electric clock into one. Dan running at 70Hz Sent from my iPad On Sep 15, 2014, at 1:21 PM, Mitch Haley via Mercedes mercedes@okiebenz.com wrote: Yesterday I bought a generator that 'acts like the choke was stuck on and then it dies', then the seller broke the starter rope before I got there so I couldn't even check it for compression. Does anybody know anything about Wacker generators, other than they're super expensive? Looks like internet price on my Wacker 5.6 is about $2600 plus $200 for the wheel kit. I'm hoping the quality and durability is super high, like Snap-On hand tools or old Mercedes-Benz. 1.) Because they're not making them for models produced before 1990 2.) Other than the fuel tank and battery, both of which are in common locations, your W123 has no explosive devices like air bags or squibs for locking the seat belts The idea behind these is to let rescue/extraction folks know where the nasty stuff is in the car so they don't set it off with their Hurst tools. MBUSA has a good video about this on their website. I have to admit it never occurred to me that there's all sorts of nasty stuff buried in newer model cars. RB Somebody here took a E350 work van full of tools in the driver's door of his W124 300D at a claimed 50-60mph without injury other than from shattered glass. IIRC the left side of the dash was messed up too badly to shut the engine off without going under the hood to hit the shutoff lever on the IP. Mitch. I suspect it helped that the 300D was not fixed and moved with the van. In the photo of the old crash, you will note that the pole did not appear to move at all. When I was a kid the guy across the street always had IH Scouts as he worked at the IH truck plant in town and I guess he got some break on them. In the winter, even when it was like -20F he would go out in the morning and start the thing, then floor it immediately, and stick his window scraper on the pedal to hold it down while he went in for his coffee and it warmed up. My dad would always be amazed the things did not blow up from the abuse. --R On 9/15/14 4:00 PM, Curt Raymond via Mercedes wrote: There used to be a kid across the street with an RX7 that thought he could fix things by sitting in the street and revving the engine. This is another example where the US national media ignores gun stops crime events and the only coverage is in very local or foreign media. The Daily Mail seems cover these often. The national gun magazines typically include dozens of examples in an Armed Citizen section of each issue. Here's local coverage of one recent event I recall which is only a few miles up the road from me: http://www.wral.com/homeowner-shoots-intruder-in-vance-county-break-in/13638 825/. [MBZ] OT: A little wiring
My Cub Cadet tractor was getting slow to start last winter requiring a shot of ether most every time I plowed snow with it. I thought the problem was slow cranking so I measured the voltage drop at the starter/generator, 4v! It didn't get any better just cleaning connections so I dug deeper. Both battery cables were 10ga which I'd consider slightly undersized. They're probably fine, its only a 7hp 1cyl engine after all but I figure overkill is just good enough. The wire from the battery to the switch (a simple push button, no relay) had a splice which took it from 10ga to 12ga. The splice was really ratty looking too. I replaced it with some 8ga wire Fred had given me for my 240D (MB content). I also made up a new ground cable. I wanted to run a new wire from the switch to the starter/generator too but ran out of ring terminals. Drop at the starter/generator is now less than 1v, much better! Tractor starts much more easily now with proper power to the starter. Not a bad lunch break. Re: [MBZ] OT: A little wiring
Sounds like years ago when I worked in a rental and fabrication shop. We had loads of welding cable that went out for rent, and often came back in a condition that required us to cut off the camloc connectors and make up new ends. This gave us some nice scrap pieces that were perfect for battery cables We also had both large copper crimp and solder lugs as well. I put a set of these wires on a VW I had and the starter spun so fast you barely hit the key and the engine was running. Best example of voltage drop I ever saw. Re: [MBZ] OT: A little wiring
Marshall and I had an argument back when I was trying to commute with an '83 240D at -20F. I wanted to install 00 ga battery cables which he insisted were an absolute waste of time. I was trying to get every possible advantage, which is why I was using 0w40 oil... In retrospect the battery cables on a 240D aren't really all that long. I was basing my idea on the cables on my '52 Farmall which is 6v and has 000 cables but the lead to the starter is 3 feet long and 6v can't tolerate much voltage drop. -Curt From: Dan Penoff via Mercedes mercedes@okiebenz.com To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Monday, September 15, 2014 9:42 PM Subject: Re: [MBZ] OT: A little wiring Sounds like years ago when I worked in a rental and fabrication shop. Re: [MBZ] OT Re: Subject: Re: N assault
Excellent point Hendrik, calling them defense rifles [American spelling] rather than assault weapons. The term assault rifle is one manufactured by the largely anti-self defense crowd to do exactly what you speak to, stir up emotion, and draw attention away from the useful effect of being able to defend ones self. That was used to full effect in Australia to the point where personal ownership of the means to defend yourself has been removed.
