White guys in white short sleeve shirts with narrow black ties, with short haircuts and Dietzgen or Post slide rules. The amazing thing is that it was only 51 years from the Wright bros flyer going 103' to the design of this stealth plane, and that it has been 51 years since, and all the computer jockey engineers who did NOT grow up in the depression have not been able to design a higher performance craft. Lighter and more powerful onboard computers, yes, but nothing flies higher or faster. ...or else we just don't know about it In this day of cellphone cameras, i don't think a bird higher and faster could be kept secret. New Jersey (and Bergen county) have historically been the home of most foreign car manufactures for the last 50+ years. BMW, Volvo, Jaguar/LR, and Subaru are based here still. If the analog computer burped and misplaced the inlet spike, the resulting drop in thrust was dramatic. This event was called an inlet unstart. The resulting violent yaw motion was the faster than human reflexes. In the early days, the SR yaw autopilot had limited authority and an unstart produced extremely violent motion at the cockpit (which was way forward at the end of a long moment arm). I believe at least one SR disintegrated inflight when the yaw from an unstart exceeded aircraft structural limits. Later in the program, better flight and engine controls mitigated the unstart problem. The SR stands as a tribute to the men (and women) who built and flew it. Low buck driver? Some of us drive more than others, I put 20,000 miles on the Jetta in a year... Cheapest driver I ever had was the second time I owned my '83 240D, I drove it 25,000 for $2500 which includes buying the car and doing oil changes. Toward the end it was leaking/consuming oil so bad I was using the cheapest 15w40 I could find and putting the change out oil back in as makeup oil (plus some new). It finally died, some of you might remember, due to a failed oil cooler bypass hose which was totally my fault. If the car in question wasn't so far away I'd seriously consider it. Aside from that, it sounds more like a $5 pushbutton starter switch bypassing the lockout and or the ign switch would cure it. Nothing i read indicates the engine is worn out, but it could be. Whatcha expect for $500? Its worth $300 as a crusher. Might not! The beast has a tired engine. [MBZ] Welding time again
Hadta do some more welding on the Jetta before winter and yesterday it wasn't raining (3 straight weeks of almost constant rain/clouds, sheesh) so yesterday I jacked it up and once again crawled under... Pulled on the passenger seat and pulled the carpet back and a little picking left three holes, one of them quite large. That might explain the increased road noise inside the car. Over the next 4 hours I got the biggest hole welded back up. Ran out of light and bodily energy so I used some gasket maker to glue a couple pieces of plastic over the other two holes. VW put rubber plugs in the body, one of the holes is really just where one of the plugs fell out. The plastic will hopefully keep the inside of the car dry so those holes won't get a lot worse, I'll aim to tackle them in spring.I finished with a little fiberglass, the last piece I welded in was up into a notch in the body where I could either fill in the notch or plate over it, neither was a very good solution. I opted to fill the notch as best as I could and stuff some fiberglass in the little holes I couldn't get to. Big hole: http://i843.photobucket.com/albums/zz353/curtludwig/1998%20Jetta/IMG_20141220_115632221_zpsnfwaaick.jpg Smaller holes: http://i843.photobucket.com/albums/zz353/curtludwig/1998%20Jetta/IMG_20141220_115636975_zps8calpoo5.jpg the body plug is the hole on the left. Also notice the proximity of the fuel line. Fortunately they're flexible and look like they'll move out of the way pretty easily. This was some of the largest plating I've ever done, as in I used larger pieces of metal that I ever have before. The welding is terrible but time was of the essence, again I'll clean it up in spring. Supposedly around Christmas it'll be in the 50's with rain. If we get the higher temps I'll make a tent over the side of the car and spray some undercoating to make everything water tight. Hey, its a $1500 car... Unsurprisingly I ran out of wire about 45 minutes into the job and had to jump into the 190D (MB content!) to get some more and of course the first roll I bought wasn't flux core. Oh how nice it is to use fresh wire! I might have to make a warm box to keep my welding wire dry in, of course it'd be a hassle to pull the existing wire out of the gun each time I was done but it might be worth it. I could always splurge and get a gas bottle but the flux stuff works just fine even when its not fresh. -Curt ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post. Re: [MBZ] OT White guys in white short sleeve shirts with short haircuts and slide rules
Sadly, the race to space rendered the SR71 obsolete. Each launch and recovery of the SR71 ran a minimum of $1,000,000. Even a reposition ferry flight incurred that cost. Plus, the opposition developed equipment that effectively defeated it's advantages. The spy vs spy game is a cat and mouse game with each side building ever bigger cats and mice. One satellite with the necessary camera equipment and other special electronics equipment could make a pass over the target opposition every 60 minutes.. two could be positioned so that interval was even less.. a geo-stationary could hang in orbit to give continual coverage.. so SR71, as glamorous and sexy as it is.. was simply out gunned. Jaimie and his friends would probably settle in quickly and be glad they were transferred to the Atlanta area. Gerrywho lived and worked in Atlanta for six years Lower overhead: Lowest would likely be Fargo or GreatFalls. Near the existing plant in AL would also be a very low overhead. Anywhere between the appalachians and the rockies would be competitive with or less than Hotlanta with the possible exceptions of Denver or Dallas. World class airport, meaning a major airline hub: Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Memphis, St Louis, Minneapolis, Denver would all qualify. Of these, I'd guess Memphis would have the lowest overhead cost. Places like Des Moines or Omaha, and Charlotte are gaining as hubs too, with much less congestion and lower costs. AA is moving from the hub and spoke arrangement to point to point. That will make many more locations desirable, and lessen the advantage of hubs like Denver, Chicago and Hotlanta. If other airlines follow suit, the hubs will diminish in importance. Seldom any weather disruptions in the winter: Depends on definitions. I think Hotlanta has as many disruptions as Chicago, but the FAA or NWS should have the info. major international ground and air shipping routes and facilities, Hard to beat Memphis for these, but St Louis, Memphis, Des Moines, Omaha and Chicago are all major distribution points. Chicago, St Louis, Memphis and Omaha have major rail and water shipping facilities. International City: Any city and many small small city in the central US has large international populations. Companies like Siemens have locations all over the country. My son works for Siemens building automotive software in a town of 40,000. Most have several international stores. Larger cities have many international stores. Friendly People: Everywhere in the central US is known as friendly. There are undesirable sections in the big cities, but aside from big cities, friendly people are pretty much everywhere west of the appalachians and south of the MasonDixon line east of the appalchians. Most outside visitors say Des moines is the friendliest place in the country, but I've been lots of places I think are as good or better. So, politics aside, there are many locations as good as or better than hotlanta That said, the decision will be mostly or ALL political. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post.
