Re: [MBZ] OT?? Garbage to biofuels
Question is what is the production cost of this stuff -- can it compete with jet fuel at a refined cost of $2 or $3 a gallon or whatever it is these days? Or does it rely on gummint (i.e., our tax money) incentives to make an economic alternative to dino jet fuel? Not saying it is a bad idea to look at alternative processes but they also need to be realistic and not hugely subsidized. --R On 5/5/15 4:19 PM, Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes wrote: Companies to build Nev. plant to turn garbage into jet fuelPublished: Tuesday, May 5, 2015 Abengoa Bioenergy will partner with Fulcrum BioEnergy Inc. to build a municipal solid-waste-to-energy plant near Reno, Nev., the companies announced today. The Sierra BioFuels Plant will be the nation's first biorefinery to use gasification technology to produce jet fuel out of municipal solid waste, the companies said. The plant will divert 200,000 tons of garbage from landfills, including waste from the Reno-Tahoe gambling industry, and produce 10 million gallons of biofuel annually. Last September, Fulcrum received a $105 million loan guarantee from the U.S. Department of Agriculture toward the construction of the plant 20 miles east of Reno. Fulcrum is also one of three advanced biofuel companies to win $70 million in awards last year through the Defense Production Act, an effort by the Obama administration to use military purchasing power to spur the creation of a commercial-scale biofuel industry. According to a news release, the contract announced today between Abengoa and Fulcrum is worth $200 million. We are eager to add Abengoa to our team, E. James Macias, president and CEO of Fulcrum, said in a statement. Abengoa has the skill and horsepower to take our design and technology development and successfully turn it into an operating commercial plant. Abengoa last year opened one of the nation's first large-scale cellulosic ethanol plants in Hugoton, Kan. (*Greenwire* http://www.eenews.net/greenwire/stories/1060007505/, Oct. 17, 2014). Abengoa will engineer, design and construct the biorefinery in Nevada under the fixed-price contract with Fulcrum. --R Which is why I called solindra. Sort of my thoughts as well. Talked to the owner last night. The guy sounds like he's in his 90's, and every once in a while I would hear his wife in the background yelling over him to correct something he said. It was clear that he didn't know cars that well, and he let his indie dictate what to do on it as far as service. He just had ALL the coils replaced based on his mechanic's recommendation. Holy. That was a four digit bill right there. He definitely spares no expense to maintain it, and he said the first owner had a Mercedes warranty through 100k that he milked the heck out of. I'll need to pore over the records to get an idea of what has been dealt with, but it certainly sounds like a lot of things have been addressed. Re: [MBZ] Am I on Crack?
Yes you are on crack but you could still buy it and have some fun. A coupla years ago an S600 was for auction at a tow yard, I went over there and got there just as they were selling it, went for something like $2300. Looked like a doper car, probably repo or something, but in half OK condition. Guy who bought it looked like a low-end used car lot dealer. I figured for that money if nothing else the parts would be worth at least 2X that. Whatever, I didn't buy it... So some time later I am at some dinner my wife organized with some of her colleagues, get talking to one guy who was a drug developer doc of some sort, says he collected various cars, had his own semi to haul them around in (!!!). I had seen an S600 parked in her lot by her office, asked him if that was his. He said yeah, he had bought it a year or so ago, used, got a good deal on it. I told him I had heard those things were troublesome and pricey to fix (not that the money would have been an issue for him), he said it had been no problem and loved the car. So there is that datum. For that kind of money just buy the damn thing and drive it til it breaks. --R On 5/5/15 10:03 AM, Dan Penoff via Mercedes wrote: Sort of my thoughts as well. Talked to the owner last night. [MBZ] ISP Issues and a miniscule tidbit of MB
Good Morning all, I've been reading the thread(s) regarding bounces with some interest. I use a very small ISP out of Wyoming (vcn.com) and have had no difficulties receiving or sending to the list since I joined the list, way back in the dark ages (2005?) when I had my 300TE (miniscule Mercedes content). There has been a lot of hysteria regarding all manner of security, especially since the Target breach and the proliferation of mobile devices. This has resulted in ISPs (especially the big ones) implement one-size-fits-all solutions which do not adapt well to everyone / everything. My educated guess is that the problems folks are seeing with bouncing email is partially due to their large, corporate, ISP attempting to intercept and terminate any email which the ISP deems suspicious. These algorithms change to reduce predictability and cause unanticipated problems. As long as individuals have privacy concerns, and are willing to attempt to enrich themselves by suing every entity in the email chain, ISPs (especially the big ones, with deep pockets) will continue to implement new (and inadequately tested) tools to reduce their risk. My recommendation is that whenever anyone is sending an email which bounces (and you know it should not), call your ISP and make them research the issue. They need to be notified whenever a change they make has an adverse impact on their end users. I work in IT consulting, primarily for healthcare, and there are all manner of pressure on these providers to be compliant to an ever-changing litany of compliance issues to escape liability for whatever idiotic things their end users do (like opening unknown attachments in emails). About once a month. AOL refuses to accept email from my ISP. I call my ISP, they call AOL, and the problem gets resolved, usually in 24hrs. When I become aware that a business partner uses AOL, I warn them that there is a high likelihood of issues with their email, and request an alternate. It irritates people, but it solves my problem. Personally, I much prefer using a relatively small ISP who is responsive to my needs, even if there is a cost associated with their services. I do get a lot of phishing emails which survive their spam filters, but I can press the junk button several time after my mail downloads. In other words, I'm not as comprehensively protected as some giant, corporate, ISP might offer, but I don't have any issues with service reliability. I work from a home office most of the time, and cannot afford to be playing games to second guess what the corporate overlords are up to. *-- Best Regards, Jon B Kanas *Email: ka...@qadas.com mailto:ka...@qadas.com Website: http://www.2experts.org http://www.qadas.com/%7Ekanas *Longmont, Colorado; Cultural Center of the Universe* * * ** On 5/5/2015 8:17 AM, mercedes-requ...@okiebenz.com wrote: Send Mercedes mailing list submissions to mercedes@okiebenz.com To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to mercedes-requ...@okiebenz.com You can reach the person managing the list at mercedes-ow...@okiebenz.com When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific than Re: Contents of Mercedes digest... Hard to go wrong at that price. If a W140 looked a little less like a severely bloated 124, I'd be all over it. I just cannot stand the looks. Re: [MBZ] Am I on Crack?
I don't know the details on the paint fade. It's possible the guy lives in one of the snowbird 60's vintage homes in that area that just have car ports. It was such an ordeal trying to communicate with him because his hearing is obviously not 100% that I pretty much gave up trying to get details. I'll just take a look at it and go from there. The guy that listed it for him said someone has been calling and making offers but they can't get over to see it for a week or something goofy like that. Apparently they have talked to the owner as well, as he made some comments about someone making him an offer without seeing the car and asking if he would put a lower sale price on the title. Being an older person, that freaked him out. Re: [MBZ] Rear sub frame.
Should work OK, just remember that the wagon and the sedans have different rear axles, the wagon is 49 mm at the axle nut and the sedans are 47 mm I think. It is much easier to replace subframe mounts and do most of the work on links outside the car. However, you must still tighten the link bolts with the wheel at ride height, so in most cases you will need to do this on the car. Also will have to do a four wheel alignment. [MBZ] OT?? Garbage to biofuels
Companies to build Nev. plant to turn garbage into jet fuelPublished: Tuesday, May 5, 2015 Abengoa Bioenergy will partner with Fulcrum BioEnergy Inc. to build a municipal solid-waste-to-energy plant near Reno, Nev., the companies announced today. Last year, Fulcrum also announced a partnership with Cathay Pacific Airways in which the airline agreed to purchase 275 million gallons of jet fuel produced by Fulcrum over 10 years.
