i wonder why it's in charleston CL …. maybe it's on savannah too

i'm back in athens but will check it out maybe in a few weeks

looks more like a $2000 or less car to me

no one wants 123 cars any more it seems to me

The right front side marker light looks suspicious. Above the headlights
is one area where rust forms; behind the rear wheels is another. The ring
around the marker light could be rust damage.

Re: [MBZ] Cursed 300D

2015-05-15 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
I would call a transmission shop, it's not possible to for the
transmission to lock up and stall the engine, it has to be a bad
converter. Worst case a locked up tranny would simply never let then
engine get much above idle, but it can only stall if the torque
converter is locked, not the tranny. The tranny gears are locked by
the brakes every single time you stop, there would be zero difference
if the transmission was it two gears.

If the body is good, a decent transmission shouldn't be that hard to
find.

That was my initial thought.
Get a kit and do it yourself.

Document the process and put it on youtube and make a bundle.

A factory rebuild is worth more than the car.
Expect a local shop would charge similar.

If I could get a pick-n-pull tranny cheap, I'd go that route.

If A, get a rebuilt tranny, or if you are adventurous, do the many

If B, get a junk yard tranny and hope . . .

[MBZ] Cursed 300D

2015-05-15 Thread clay via Mercedes
I got a call from the shop to please have the car towed home, not two hours
after it arrived there. It was drug home and sits waiting for me to decide
whether it goes to a scrap yard or I toss cash at it.

The transmission seems to be massively screwed up. The plates or something are
locking up when gear is engaged. This creates so much stress and torque that
the engine in not able to overcome it and dies. No matter the engine speed, it
stalls. SO.. I need a fresh junkyard trans or spend cash on a rebuild.

What is the consensus of the group? Gamble on a used one, or plow cash into
rebuilding it?

Re: [MBZ] My eyes!!!!

2015-05-15 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I was having a summer daydream yesterday looking at Jeeps. There are many I
immediately skip by thinking "dorked out" meaning its jacked up and painted
neon green. Why are so many Jeeps painted neon green?
I was surprised how reasonably I could get a decent CJ5 that wasn't dorked out.
A CJ7 in reasonable shape is around $9000, a CJ5 is "only" around $6000. Thats
one with no rust that runs and drives with a nice interior...
I don't think I'm really going to get one any time in the near future. If the
company stock keeps going up maybe next year I'll invest in another bay for my
garage which would give me some "toy keeping space" which would allow for
something like a toy Jeep to stay out of the weather. I'd love to build a CJ3b
or CJ5 with the engine from my Jetta. Stage 2 chip in the engine with upgraded
injectors should make 120hp, 288lb/ft. With a 5spd it'd be a pretty fun ride.
Have to gear it appropriately of course and a CJ5 would be much more
street-able. 31" tires, selectable locker front and rear for real offroad
performance... Ahh the summer daydream, even if it is only springtime.

Re: [MBZ] My eyes!!!!

2015-05-15 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes

I have to wonder if it looks better in person.

I often see vehicles that leave me wondering what the owner was thinking
but I tell myself that it is a good thing that they are involved in the
hobby and that it is not up to me to decide how someone else's custom
car looks. My son and I go to car shows and it is sometimes hard to
believe what people build. They spend 10's of thousands of dollars to
build their dream and more often than not, they have wasted their time,
effort and money because they have built a monstrosity. Sometimes, I
wonder if they even run.

My son works in a shop that builds custom hot rods and has a different
view than I do as to what is desirable. He thinks thousand horse twin
turbo LS motors are cool. I think it is a waste of effort. I don't care
if I ever see another big block Camaro.

I am somewhat drawn to rat rods. Some don't look safe to be in but it is
truly amazing what people can cobble together. There is one around here
that is a sort of an old truck body with an exposed engine and a grill
from some other truck etc. It has a flat head engine from an old
Lincoln. A V12 which I had no idea existed until just a few years ago.

In any event, I am a somewhat frugal sort and cannot help but think
about fuel mileage when I look at some of these hot rods. Power is nice
but mileage is generally more important to me. Hence, the interest in
old diesel Mercedes.
