Re: [MBZ] watch out VW dizzelers
I'm also wondering how the "fix" will affect MPG. A work colleague has a VW diesel, and the rumor mill says the "fix" will cause fuel consumption to increase dramatically, so he plans to avoid the fix and stay away from the dealer all together. Car does not have the DEF/DPF injection tank or system, and he thinks the "fix" requires that to be installed. I wouldn't be surprised if EPA mandates that if a car which needs the fix comes to the dealer for any service, the fix is required by law to be performed, regardless of car owner desire. In reading some of the Bosch fuel injection pump training literature on Dave M's site, there is a trade-off of injection timing between fuel consumption and NOX emissions, so if the fix changes the injection timing and increases the amount of exhaust fed back in via the EGR, I can see that impacting fuel consumption and engine power, but I don't know enough about how the DEF/DPF system works to see what that does. I was under the impression DEF/DPF was simply injected into the exhaust stream ahead of one of the catalysts to reduce the NOX. - Max Charleston SC On Wed, Sep 30, 2015 at 5:22 PM, OK Don via Mercedeswrote: > How does injecting DEF in the exhaust effect mileage? Re: [MBZ] Should I Look at This?
That looks like a real turd. I'll bet most if not all of the new parts are NOT genuine MB or even decent aftermarket, but probably URO or similar. >From what I can see: Rust is just starting to get bad; expect to find more than what is shown in the pix. Vacuum issue, you may be right that the pump has failed, might be something else (gasket between MC and brake booster, or failure in the big line from pump to booster). AC "just needs a belt and blower motor", sure I'll bet there is a major leak somewhere (condensor or hose) AND the compressor is seized. Interior looks like real leather, which is rare, so more expensive to fix seats etc. Are the door cards really leather as well? What else did the dog eat? Sadly, this car will probably never be more than a beater. Might be fun to get it all sorted out mechanically, but if there is major rust on the suspension bits, that part won't be fun at all without a lift and air tools. - Max Charleston SC ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

A clear case of better living by government regulation, I believe. By using more fuel, you pollute less, generate a smaller carbon and heat footprint, and contribute to the social order as part of your "fair share". More forests will be cut down to produce paper for the multitude of copies of the regulations, which will deplete wildlife habitat and thus cause more employment for federal regulators. Am I following the logic points here yet? Ooops.. I left out, greater control over what you do as a person by larger and more powerful government with more agency power.. Fundamental Change didn't that happen during the French Revolution? Yeah.. I'm pretty sure it did.. but.. "let them eat cake, what difference does it make now"... :))) On Thu, Oct 1, 2015 at 6:11 AM, Meade Dillon via Mercedes < mercedes@okiebenz.com> wrote: > I'm also wondering how the "fix" will affect MPG. [MBZ] Another good thing about old MB diesels
My 2005 Golf TDI only came with one key, thats no big deal, fixmyvw.com offers replacement keys, cut from a picture (imagine that) if you send a pic of your registration and drivers license. The thing they can't do is program the immobilizer so the key will actually start the car. What you need is the magic number from your car to allow the programming, my Indy has a cable that should allow that, I have the cable which will actually do the programming but mine can't get the magic number. Sadly my Indy's cable couldn't get the magic number so no programming fun for me... We think its because his is an eBay cable, not a proper "VAG Tacho" which is about $300. I've asked the brain trust at the TDI club, hopefully somebody nearby has the real deal cable. If not I'll buy one, the cable is about the same price as a single dealer cut key with programming... -Curt ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] Another good thing about old MB diesels
A fwe years down the road, there should be a way to retrofit a primitive (non-digital) key so you don't have to incur a towing expense greater than the value of the depreciated vehicle. Fortunately, my ways to avoid paying for tows and $500 keys are to stick with 123, 124 and 126 cars, with real keys. I don't know if MB has gone as far as toada and eliminated the last vestiges of a key for the uncontrollable "please sir, may i start the car?" button, but most of the current cars don't have a real switch. only an electronic signal to ask the computer to start the car. I am not sure this system could be retrofitted with a real key and switch. There will be cars getting junked because it is not worth the price of a tow and a $500 "sftware key". I was getting concerned about the dogde getting close to the count where a "key" deactivates. Then a recall came along to replace the fubar fobik, otherwise known as a "key." So, I figured that would give us two new "keys" and we'd likely never reach the count where the key disables itself. After the new "keys" were delivered, it now takes 4 clicks to get the right side doors unlocked, and 2 clicks to get the left doors unlocked. Not so good! I love the veteran MBs with real keys that will shut off gassers, and will shut off the Diesels if they are working right. I like the vaccum locking system for its near silence, compared to the loud clunkbuzz of the dogde. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] watch out VW dizzelers an trez passers
I'd call that goods hootin' Wilton, Thanks for asking. It is a "real gate" made from 3/16 wall rectangle tubing that weighs about 1,500 lbs, 20 ft across, on railroad track to "roll open". When closed, the ends are fully encapsulated with vertical uprights that lock it in place. Sign on front gate reads "Entry beyond this point by invitation only. Use of deadly force authorized." in 5 languages. 20 ft back and to one side are what appears to be 3 graves, 2 with head markers that read "Trespasser #1 and Trespasser #2" ... The third grave site is open [only takes a few minutes with a backhoe] and the head marker for that one reads "Next". To the other side, there is a 4 yr old, jacked up jeep 4X4, with an open beer cooler in the back and it still has the old gate laying in front of it after bulldozing it down. It also has the engine destroyed and hood blown open from a .50 Cal. round going through the block after the un-invited party drove through the gate, destroyed it, then stopped to relieve themselves and get fresh beers.. I happened to be on the mountain watching them when it happened sighting in the .50 cal. for a competition shoot. It seems the one round was all the deterrent force needed to convince them they needed to "walk to town" on their own.. 2,600' shot, 800' elevated position, 3 mph quartering wind, bullet entry point was 2 inches below hood line, trajectory was then through the top of the water pump [V8 engine] center of engine, through the cam, rods, crank rear 3 journals, clutch, then the transmission, exit approximately center of transmission. The other part of this I think the greenie weenies at CARB miss is that by using more fuel we require more fuel trucks and refining capacity both of which produce more greenhouse gasses. Diesels could cut the US's use of foreign oil if they were allowed to exist without overly stringent emissions requirements. -Curt From: Meade Dillon via MercedesTo: Mercedes Discussion List Cc: Meade Dillon Sent: Thursday, October 1, 2015 1:56 PM Subject: Re: [MBZ] watch out VW dizzelers Didn't you mean to say, "by using more fuel, you pollute less [per gallon burned but pollute more overall because you're burning more gallons], generate a LARGER carbon and heat footprint"? - Max Charleston SC On Thu, Oct 1, 2015 at 1:13 PM, G Mann via Mercedes wrote: > A clear case of better living by government regulation, I believe. > > By using more fuel, you pollute less, generate a smaller carbon and heat > footprint, and contribute to the social order as part of your "fair share". > > ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Total price was $26,032.95. The color is sh*tty, the year isn't bad if you replace the exhaust system with a '77 or later one (CATs under the floor). For reference, my '78 450SLC sold for $28,000+, the same as our house at that time, also built in '78. [MBZ] Extremely Dangerous Hurricane
Hurricane Joaquin an 'extremely dangerous' category 4 storm, packing 135 mph winds The storm has dumped as many as 20 inches of rain on the Bahamas and continues its path toward the U.S. East Coast, forecasters said. MIAMI, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- Hurricane Joaquin was upgraded to an "extremely dangerous" Category 4 storm Thursday afternoon with maximum sustained winds of 135 mph winds, the National Hurricane Center said. The storm is moving slowly to the southwest at about 6 mph, the center said, and is located about 70 miles from San Salvador in the Bahamas. Forecasters expect it to pick up forward speed when it turns north Friday. Air Force Reserve "Hurricane Hunter" aircrafts found hurricane force winds extend some 45 miles from the center of the storm, and tropical force winds extend about 140 miles. "Some additional strengthening is possible during the next 24 hours, with some fluctuations in intensity possible Friday night and Saturday," forecasters said. Residents along the U.S. East Coast were on alert ahead of the storm shifting north, possibly making landfall in the Carolinas or the New York metro area. Nearly every state from North Carolina to Connecticut was in the so-called "cone of uncertainty." Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie declared states of emergency in their respective states. Heavy rains, unrelated to Hurricane Joaquin, have already fallen in the states, increasing the likelihood for additional flooding if Joaquin moves toward the East Coast. "We know there is definitely going to be moderate and likely to be major flooding events in South Jersey Friday and Saturday with 5 to 6 inches of rainfall expected to come," Christie said in a Thursday morning press conference. "I'm not here to say Sandy II is coming. I have no way of knowing that. But what I want people to know is if it did, we're as prepared as you could be to deal with it." We are prepared. I need everyone to not panic. — Governor Christie (@GovChristie) October 1, 2015 New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo urged caution, remembering damage from previous storms. The state emergency operations centers was activated Thursday afternoon, and the National Guard is on alert. "Our state has seen the damage that extreme weather can cause time and time again -- and I am urging New Yorkers take precautions for more heavy storms in the coming days," Cuomo said. "Tropical Storm Lee and Hurricane Irene proved that you do not have to be near the coast to be impacted by Mother Nature. I have directed state agencies to ready their emergency response equipment in partnership with local governments, and I encourage all of our state's residents to be prepared and stay safe." The National Hurricane Center said the storm's path is still unpredictable but wind speeds should intensify in the coming 24 hours. It will take a sharp turn toward the north on Friday, possibly tracking over North and South Carolina by early next week. Other tracks show the storm moving toward southern New England and Long Island. There is also a chance it will move into the Atlantic Ocean away from land. Hurricane watches could be posted for portions of the United States coast by Thursday night. "The range of possible outcomes is still large, and the possibility of a hurricane landfall in the Carolinas still cannot be ruled out," the National Hurricane Center said. "Because landfall, if it occurs, is still more than three days away, it's too early to talk about specific wind, rain or surge impacts from Joaquin in the U.S." The storm has already dumped more than a foot of rain in the Bahamas and will continue battering the island chain for the next day or so. Forecasters said it could produce up to 20 inches of rain in some areas of the Bahamas, which could cause flash flooding. Earlier Thursday, the Bahamian government issued a tropical storm warning for the Turks and Caicos islands. Hurricane warnings were in place in central and northwestern Bahamas, including Abacos, Berry Islands, Eleuthera, Grand Bahama Island and New Providence. "A very dangerous and life-threatening storm surge will raise water levels by as much as 5 to 10 feet above normal tide levels in the central Bahamas in areas of onshore flow," forecasters said. In Virginia, authorities were expecting 8 to 10 inches of rain early next week in a state already saturated by heavy downfalls. The executive order in Virginia, which is retroactive to Sept. 29, allows local and state emergency responders to begin preparations for expected flooding and power outages. "I cannot stress enough the imperative for Virginians to focus on the rainstorms that are headed our way tomorrow and Friday, well before Hurricane Joaquin could potentially impact Virginia," McAuliffe said. "As we continue to track the path of Hurricane Joaquin, I have instructed the Secretary of Public Safety and Homeland

Well it's either going to start or it won't. If it starts drive it home, if not have it towed home. I would have been all over that thing. If it's been sitting that long with those plastic fuel lines it's possible the fuel had bleed off and you will have to crank the piss out of it to get it started. Or maybe I should come out there with my trailer.
