Haven't most if not all gassers had fuel shut offs for years now? I remember 
dad's '91 Frod Tempo had it and it got set off in a relatively minor accident 
my mom got in once. Hadta open the trunk and yank a little cable or push a 
button or something. I remember it was in the trunk anyway.

My guess is the latter.  All the current EFI gassers use an electric 
fuel pump, at or near the tank, and most have hard plastic fuel lines 
or connectors that break in a crash.  This leads to the toada funeral 
pyre.  This is where the toada (or substitute other asian brands) 
ignites the gasoline and continues to pump gasoline from the tank to 
incinerate the car and its occupants in a relatively light frontal 
crash.  This is extremely ugly.

If the thing in your bimmer is intact, then in theory Jill won't get 
roasted as the result of a frontal crash.

Friends don't let friends drive a toada.

The tach signal goes into the EDS computer (main engine computer) and gets
split out from there to the cluster and the KLIMA and maybe other
consumers.  I think there is some amplification in the EDS computer, I
don't know if there is any other processing.  Do you have a wiring
diagram?  I bought a copy of the "Model Year 1987 124.133 and 124.193
Introduction to Service" which has some useful info in the text but most
usefully a big fold-out wiring diagram for each model which gives me a
decent starting place for troubleshooting.

I could never get the KLIMA working in my wagon, I suspect the EDS signal
to the KLIMA is bad, but the tach works fine.  I did try replacing the
pick-up sensor, no change.  I've got a relay gerry-rigged in the KLIMA's
place so the AC compressor gets power to the clutch when needed.

I'm pretty sure they are eligible here, but I have no idea
how often they're kicked out by one side or the other.

Probably acceptable. I have a bit of Scottish blood but not enough to make 
me want to get and wear a kilt.
My uncle Ross ( the husband of my mother's sister - so not blood uncle) 
has a very nice Scottish dress kilt and waistcoat etc.

His name is McGregor so he fits into the bunch who claim that heritage.

argument is really "he was not of sound mind when he made out this will, 
or he would not have failed to include me, or leave me only a token amount".

I am not personally familiar with the system since the 2003 Z4 is far newer 
than any of the BMWs I own, but I did find this in bimmerforums:
"just an FYI illustration of the BST (battery safety terminal) for those 
unfamiliar with it:  

 (MRS III is the multiple restraint system...so that's why the SRS light 
illuminates...and the car won't start because it's disconnected from the high 
amp distribution box, starter and alternator/generator)"
 
My understanding is that it is, indeed, a one-time use, and needs to be 
replaced.   I don't know if a serviceable item may be available at a junkyard.

I'd need to pull the piddle pads back out after the job is done. I'm not sure 
but the exhaust runs right by there, they'd definitely ignite given the 
chance... I need to get back into the garage and get the Wankel rotary powered 
snowmobile put back together. Thats the one I started doing crank seals on only 
to find that the clutch was cracked in half which explains why it always rode 
strangely...

Is it going to get that warm? I'm going to try to replace the track on my 
snowmobile. About the same level of fun as your job I think. Worst part is I 
have to pull the drive axle which means draining the chaincase. Nobody ever 
puts a drain plug under the chaincase so you fill the belly pan of the sled 
with chain oil. I wonder if I could get a couple of the oil piddle pads and 
stuff 'em down there to catch it...

Fred was the source for the wire by the battery, I remember it is a
two-wire connector but I don't remember the colors.  My wiring diagram says
one wire is white, other is brown with a yellow stripe.

Nope.

Strangely enough, Toastmaster made toasters and toaster ovens and 
shipped them all over the world.


It was in the day when Merkun manufacturing was the benchmark of the 
world.  Before we were told by the goobermnt that we would be come a 
service economy, meaning we hall had to become servile.   (We can't 
have productive people in a productive economy, because they can't be 
led around by the nose.)

I saw all of this in my searches before I posted.

It does in fact appear to be a one time use item, however, it also appears that 
the squib’s resistance value can change as it ages, affecting the SRS system in 
the sense that it makes it think the squib is either gone or has been 
activated, neither of which is the case with this car.

I also found that some people who are tracking their cars and don’t want the 
SRS functions or have eliminated the squib and want to fool the SRS system have 
been successfully placing a 25 amp fuse across the terminals.  This is close to 
the original resistance of 0.2 ohms so it effectively fools the SRS into 
thinking the squib is there and good.

I am out of the loop on inheritance.  SWMBA and Sister Dearest, being lawyers, 
are co-executors for Mom, when she should pass.  Mom tried to get me involved,  
I declined the honor.   I have an older sibling who may want some cash out of 
the deal, Sister Dearest is trying to make tenure at law school and is poverty 
stricken from her recent divorce.   I told Mom to blow through her cash and 
savings as she is wont.  

When my Granny passed, my oldest cousin descended upon the house and absconded 
with all manner of loot and goodies.  Granddad was still alive and would be a 
widower for another 15 years.  Minus his china, silverware, various household 
items and treasures that walked out the door.  My broke uncle took up residence 
in the homestead when Grandpa became feeble minded and moved to secured 
housing.  When the old man died, Cousin #1 swept back in and absconded with 
more stuff while her father was out.  My uncle and father kept the property for 
a few more years and cashed it out so my uncle could live a wee better for the 
next two years before passing away himself.  Cousin #1 swooped in and tried to 
abscond with her fathers treasures, but did not succeed because the locks were 
changed immediately by his son, with whom he lived.  Not that my uncle had much 
at the end.

Maybe 124 are the same as 126 axles since the 126 wheels have the 
larger offset.

124s have the bolts.  123s don't.   I am pretty sure you can put the
stub axles in a 123 and then use the bolt on axles, but I've never
tried it.

[MBZ] OM60X WATER PUMP Was: OM60x parts

The impeller is cast.  Box says Hamburg Technic.  Sounds german, the 
box looks german, but I can't find anything that says where it is 
made.   ISP is down, so I can't look up where Hamburg Technic is 
based.  Hamburg or Shenzen?   Anyhow it looks good.  In a week or two 
when I get it installed, I will let you know.


I will have two WPs  that were serviceable when taken out, but 
replaced when I had the radiator out for other work.  If I could 
figure out how to put brgs and seals in, they'd be like new.

Goobermnt policies for the past 40 years have been anti 
manufacturing.  Once they announced the country would be a "service 
economy" about 40 years ago, the policies have more and more favored 
shipping the manufacturing overseas.  It is still that way, and 
Burgler King Drug companies and many others are buying irish or 
Yurpeen companies to move the HQ  OUT of the USA because of hostile 
goobermnt policies.  It is not just tax policies.  It is every 
goobermnt alphabet soup agency.


The decisions to move overseas are a reaction, not the initial action.

If only you knew how true that is.

Farmers are the next to flee.  Some already have.  Many went south, 
some went East, but most don't have the money to make that kind of 
drastic move.  In some cases they help set up the nextgen in a more 
hospitable country.


THe EPA is attempting to grab ALL the land in the USA that is 
productive farmland so as to dictate USSR style what is grown on what 
patch of land.   THere is an effort in the gress of cons to stop the 
land grab, but its future is doubtful.

Black. I don't live there anymore, but I forgot the tighten the lid on the
oil filter canister on the '81 240D once after an oil change in the new
concrete drive section (only a few months old), and it did get dyed a dark
gray, and the water beaded up on it. Next, I punched a hole in the oil pan
in the 300SDL, and completed the dying job. THe current drive in black
asphalt, so the effect is not quite the same.

KLIMA relay is a consumer of the tachometer signal, not a processor.  OVP relay 
protects the main computer, which _I think_ processes the tachometer signal?

I had a dead tachometer in The White Whale, I pulled the cluster and measured 
the signal using the A.C. function of my digital multimeter and verified the 
signal was present.  Got a good used tachometer, no problems since.

My problem with the oversight argument is that it must be used 100x 
for every one time it really happened that way. 
If you're important enough to get a major share, it's pretty hard for
you to just entirely slip their mind while they're making out their 
will.

Hmm  I've never heard of the tach itself dying, but after 29yrs, 
anything is possible.  Congrats!  You got the odd one!


If the tach signal does not go out through the KLIMA, then there must 
be a T somewhere that splits the signal and sends one to the tach and 
one to the KLIMA.

Check the connection for the Hall effect pickup at the rear of the 
engine.  It often gets corroded, being exposed to road splash, and 
gives an intermittent or very low signal.  Mine works (as does the 
idle speed control) only when it's wet, never have gotten around to 
fixing it.


Might be a bad hall effect pickup, it's in the bell housing above 
the starter if I remember correctly.


The pickup on the FRONT of the engine is for diagnostics, mostly 
setting the injection timing, and is NOT used for the tach or idle 
speed control.

Is it going to get that warm? I'm going to try to replace the track on my 
snowmobile. About the same level of fun as your job I think. Worst part is I 
have to pull the drive axle which means draining the chaincase. Nobody ever 
puts a drain plug under the chaincase so you fill the belly pan of the sled 
with chain oil. I wonder if I could get a couple of the oil piddle pads and 
stuff 'em down there to catch it...

I going to be replacing the pumpkin for the '87 300TD this weekend and I wanted 
to ask if there were any caveats? I have the 3 mounts to be replaced, also. The 
drive joints, center mount and bearing were replaced previously, as was the LHS 
wheel bearing.

The diff. whines a basso profundo lament as power is applied.

Supposed to go up to 60 deg. this weekend and this may well be my last chance.

I ask because my neighbor just bought a 2003 Z4 coupe for his wife.  The 
starter crapped out on it and he asked me if I could give him some pointers on 
replacing it.

30 minutes later I had it swapped out.

The car is i good shape but has a few issues, one with the top function and an 
airbag light due to the “battery safety terminal” being funky.  I looked this 
up and it appears that BMW, in their infinite wisdom, put this charge in the 
battery cable that blows in the event of an accident. If the airbags deploy, 
this thing fires off and separates the positive cable from the clamp to disable 
the electricals in the car.

Goofy.

Only fix according to BMW is to replace the whole cable, which runs from the 
trunk to the starter, for a $500 bill.  $1700 if the dealer does it.

Oy.

I had one stub axle (can annular) and one "normal" axle (homokinetic, I hope 
the PC police don't catch that) on my 123.190 for a couple years before I sold 
it.

Scots irish are sort of frowned upon as not being real irish, as they were an 
invading protestant mob relocated to Ireland to steal the land from the good 
Catholics.  A cause of great unrest and division that is still not put to bed.

[MBZ] IP governor adjustments

Confession time.  A few months ago I broke the original IP on The White Whale.  
The pain has faded enough that I can talk about it.  Basically the bolt for the 
rear mount came loose and fell out, and the three front bolts loosened to the 
point that the IP became cockeyed and was leaking engine oil.  When I 
discovered the leak and tried to fix it by tightening up the front mounts, the 
tang for the bottom mount broke off.

I replaced the IP with a used IP from a 3.5 liter engine.

This IP governor starts to cut off the fuel at about 4500 RPM, but the 
transmission won't upshift until 5000 RPM at WOT.

I'd like to adjust the IP governor so the fuel cutoff happens at 5150 RPM.  
Anyone have that info?

You really need the proper IP in that car.  The 3.5 is geared all 
different and as you discovered redline is completely different.

Oh man, glad you mentioned the locks. The minute uncle Fred died cousin Phil 
hustled right over and changed the locks. I mentioned the cousin who committed 
suicide, he was taken care of in the will and his wife has gone absolutely 
crazy and money grubbing. She's accusing Phil (and strangely my Dad) of all 
sorts of mis-deeds because he changed the locks and she couldn't steal 
everything. Strangely her first husband also committed suicide...

I am out of the loop on inheritance.  SWMBA and Sister Dearest, being lawyers, 
are co-executors for Mom, when she should pass.  Mom tried to get me involved,

the deal, Sister Dearest is trying to make tenure at law school and is poverty

When my Granny passed, my oldest cousin descended upon the house and absconded 
with all manner of loot and goodies.  Granddad was still alive and would be a 
widower for another 15 years.  Minus his china, silverware, various household 
items and treasures that walked out the door.  My broke uncle took up residence 
in the homestead when Grandpa became feeble minded and moved to secured 
housing.  When the old man died, Cousin #1 swept back in and absconded with 
more stuff while her father was out.  My uncle and father kept the property for 
a few more years and cashed it out so my uncle could live a wee better for the 
next two years before passing away himself.  Cousin #1 swooped in and tried to 
abscond with her fathers treasures, but did not succeed because the locks were 
changed immediately by his son, with whom he lived.  Not that my uncle had much 
at the end.

I've found plenty of info for adjusting the OM617 IP, it looks pretty simple on 
those pumps to adjust the "red line" fuel cutoff.  Maybe Dave M. knows.  I 
think it will be easier to adjust this IP in situ than it would be to replace 
the IP.  Less expensive, and less hassle too.
