Re: [MBZ] 124 tachometers

2016-01-07 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes
I pulled the plug from the EDS computer. I found the tach signal
voltage in the plug to the computer, but I have no signal out of the
computer.

According to the ETM, the output is pin 25, but I see no pin for
input. There is no ID of pins in the computer or in the plug. Has
anyone seen any pinout for the ESD Computer?

I could run a jumper to the tach from the plug to check the tach, I suppose.
or swap out the EDS Computer
or dig into the harness and find the white/ in and the black/red out
and jump them.

Next: to get a speedo cable Then I'll figure out which option.
Since the EDS is disconnected, I'm thinking just jump the tach in to
the tach out.

Anyone have a spare speedometer cable or a drivers seat adjustment switch?

Curly.
As before, the only place that I lost the tach signal was from a
broken ground wire at the battery ground lug.
Under the bolt were 3 or 4 thin ground wires, all broken on mine.
repair of the wires restored the tach to normal.

The ground wire is after the connector near the battery.
I have a spare EDS box that you could try.
YMMV. Fred

Got back to checking tach and speedo taday. Pulled the head, cable
no turney, so looks like I need a new cable. Tach has no signal at
the head, but did have a signal behind the battery. so, it appears
like either there is no signal coming out of the EDS computer or the
wire from the EDS computer to the head is lacking continuity.

According to 136 in the 124 ETM, at the output of the EDS computer,
there are 2 wires. One runs to the tach, one to the Klima (now
called in the book "A/C compressor control relay") Both wires are
green/yellow.

So it appears that if i find a signal at the klima relay, then the
other wire is broken. If there is no signal at the klima, then
likely the EDS Comp is bad. (or the wire from the EDS comp to the
Klima is broken (not likely)

Does anyone have any experience with either? Thanks

[MBZ] Starter motor

2016-01-07 Thread fmiser via Mercedes
I've got this 240D that has had an oft-patch together starter
motor. It quit again. I figured it was time to buy o fresh
one. Yeah, I kinda dense - probably should have spent the
money a year or two ago.

But where to buy...

I called all the local parts stores. No one could get me a
Bosch rebuilt. Lots of "just a good as a Bosch" and such.

I sure was spoiled with Rusty!

After looking at a number of websites, I decide on RockAuto.
It was pretty clear that I could really choose a Bosch
rebuild SR67X. Equivalents were available, but were clearly
marked as not Bosch. What cinched the deal for me was not
only a very good price - but for the core return I could have
them print a label on their account! The price is deducted
from the core charge.

So - for about $110 plus $45 core plus less than $15 shipping
I got a starter. It works. Yea! And it was easy to get a
label printed - and this heavy old starter is shipping
halfway across the country for less than $15. I doubt I
could have found a way to ship it for less $35.

So far, I'm pretty happy with my dealings with RockAuto.

beavers!", since I would only ever shoot a beaver to ward off starvation.

As far as reducing gun violence; I'm in great favor of reducing gun and all
other violence. I just don't believe the POTUS' actions will have any positive
effects. His administration has actually reduced prosecution of firearms
violations.

I don't regard the Oregon occupation as more an act of terrorism than plain old
illegal occupation like the leftist "occupy" and so-called "black lives matter"
actions; although I also note that the Oregon action does not significantly
impede commerce or prevent other citizens' free movement. And it does appear
that the sentencing of those Oregon ranchers is excessive for what they are
alleged to have done. Using that prison space for criminals who represent a
threat to public safety would make more sense, but the current political
movement is to release more of the violent criminals.

I agree with Rich that the reaction is more disgust and disappointment than
anger.

  - About Kevin

It seems every time I scroll through the latest news stories, I can’t
prevent my blood from starting to boil. With all of the injustices in the
world, I imagine many Care2 readers can’t help but get angry. If it’s any
comfort, we’re not alone in experiencing this news-related rage. A new Esquire
& NBC News poll

found that Americans are angrier than they’ve been in a long time.

This sense of rage is coming on quickly, no less. A full 50 percent of
Americans report being more pissed off now than they were a year ago. The
majority of U.S. citizens say that the news upsets them at least once a day
at this point in time.

Altogether, just 11 percent of people surveyed say they get angry at the
news rarely or once a month. The largest share, 37 percent, report getting
angry once a day, while 31 percent say they get heated over the news a few
times a day. The remaining 20 percent say they feel anger on a weekly basis.

The statistics on *which* demographics

are getting angrier are perhaps even more telling:

  - White people
  - Women
  - Republicans
  - The shrinking middle class

While African Americans were most likely to get angry at headlines about
police brutality and discrimination, on the whole, they still tended to get
less angry than Caucasian Americans. Overall, blacks were more optimistic
about life and still had more faith in the American dream than whites.

As for white people, they were more likely to claim to be victimized by
something or other. They disproportionately thought they were making less
money than they should and blamed circumstances beyond their control for
this lack of success. 21 percent of white men were angry at the
mistreatment they claim to suffer in this country.

Researched chalked up women’s heightened anger to them having a greater
sense of empathy. Women were more likely to feel bad when people other than
themselves were negatively impacted by the world’s injustices, therefore
causing them to be angry more often.

While Republicans were more likely to get angry multiple times on a given
day, make no mistake that Democrats’ fury was on the rise, as well.
However, the types of issues that upset each side don’t generally sync up.
Is the hostile political rhetoric that has emerged in the recent
presidential campaign the result of this heightened anger or are we just
getting angrier because the political rhetoric is getting more hostile?

For the record, I don’t think the collective anger this country is
experiencing is entirely a bad thing. Sure, it’d be better if we all had
nothing to be

The goal was to reduce flooding - plant trees, let the beavers make dams
with them, thus stop flooding. However, I thought that beavers were US
animals, not UK - so it doesn't make sense to me either.

To Curt's comment: The last sentence of the second link above is telling.

"Keep an eye out in the news for "derivative crisis", as the crisis
is inevitable with current falling value of most real assets. "

From my experience, commodities such as scrap metal and inedible
protein lead the economic structure. These precursors to raw
materials have been on a deep slide for over a year. As I indicated
in an earlier post, in one case, 1/26th of prior value. This is an
indication of how far and how fast the economy can collapse.

Think about it. If you overspent your income by the same percentage
that our goobers do, how long would your household be in business?

Lets say your household income is 52K/yr, and you spend 62K per year
and you are already 311k in debt. What bank would loan you money?

This threatens the life and livelihood of every US citizen. It
affects our ability to keep our MAM MBs running in the future. It
affects future availability of fuels for our MB cars.

2016-01-07 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
It is my observation the word "angry" is improperly applied to the majority
of the American public. It seems more likely the word "disgusted" would be
more correct in encapsulation the tenure and tone of the bulk of
unrepresented Americans.

News media lives by the "If it bleeds it leads" rule, so their natural
inclination is to select words that are an inflammatory as possible in
their reporting, thus also in their poll taking.

While there are classes and colors of Americans who express how they feel
as "angry"... the root cause is really "disgust", because their
expectations are not being met.

This "disgust" is expressed by the "politically correct" crowd in passive
aggressive wording carefully crafted to appear not to insult those they
wish to insult and chastise. This disingenuous verb-age serves to further
disgust anyone who feels differently, thus further widening the gap of good
communication.

We now have, as a society, become quite dysfunctional in expressing our
"disgust" at how others are acting, and have progressively lost the ability
to communicate plainly, which, by necessity, often results in one person or
group telling another person or group, in plain language, to "get the hell
off my lawn".

It is my considered opine that good social order requires boundaries and
limits. Our present practices of social order routinely insults the
established boundaries and limits. Those insults are carried further and
deeper by the passive aggressive political correct responses now practiced
by a select few who have self appointed themselves as sole arbiters of
society mores.

Which disgusts me. A lot.

Re: [MBZ] 124 tachometers

2016-01-07 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes

Thanks

Check the connection for the Hall effect pickup at the rear of the

engine. It often gets corroded, being exposed to road splash, and
gives an intermittent or very low signal. Mine works (as does the
idle speed control) only when it's wet, never have gotten around to
 fixing it.

Might be a bad hall effect pickup, it's in the bell housing above
the starter if I remember correctly.

Thanks Fred and Peter for this info. Is the sensor accessed from the
hood or from underneath the car?
