Yeah, I would agree. The seller is misrepresenting the fact that the harnesses
go through the firewall and continue on somewhere into the car. Suggesting that
all you need is the engine harness is wrong. You either need a whole new set of
harnesses that come from the engine compartment and go through the firewall, or
you're going to be butt splicing a poopload of wires on the other side.

If the wires out of the fuse box are burned, which they are, those wires go all
thru the car and all the way back to the rear end of the car. I have salvaged
complete harnesses like this car would need and even with the car stripped it's
not fun. This car would have to be stripped front to back or the wires would
have to be spliced.

Re: [MBZ] OM603 turbo oil drain

2016-01-26 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes

If excess crankcase pressure is pushing oil back up the drain pipe,
opening the oil cap should relieve it sufficiently to prevent
this. Also, if this condition were true, removing the dipstick
would also make a small oil fountain, since its tube opens at
the bottom of the oil pan, under the 'pressurized' oil level.
Two easy tests!

Yes, I understood you - I don't remember seeing where the oil return dumped
into the case. The side pan is just to increase oil volume, and IIRC house
the oil level sensor. The oil pump (again, IIRC) is at the rear of the
engine. I don't see how it could be your problem. It has a pick-up tube
with screen that angles forward (IIRC). No direct connection to scavenge
the turbo return oil.

GMann sez: Do I understand you have now had TWO turbo oil seal failures?

I propose that if the drain line is not allowing the pressurized oil
to drain from turbo and instead [by unknown means] is pushing oil back
to turbo, the seal design limit is likely exceeded causing premature
failure.

Do you know how the garret oil seals work? Do they rely on oil
pressure for the seal?

If the seals rely on pressure differential between the pressure side
and the atmospheric side, then the back pressure may create the
condition where the seal is not pressed against the other face,
thereby forcing oil out the exhaust pipe.

If that is the case, then the turbo I took off may be ok, since it
ran only a few min. and probably did not have time to carbon up.

Re: [MBZ] OM603 turbo oil drain

2016-01-26 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Sorry to be of no practical help on that question. The seal is
certainly designed to keep oil contained within the lubricated cavity
around the bearing. Just exactly how that application does it, I don't
know.

My line of thinking is that with 60 psi of oil pressure supplied to
the turbo bearing, and the return oil path blocked, the local pressure
at the sealing surface could be enough to overpower the seal.

My gut instinct tells me it's unlikely for a seal to fail in 10 min of
operation, unless there was an improper install of the seal. To have
it happen twice.. well.. hell froze over and I'm ice skating with my
ex wife... metaphorically speaking.

Holy. Or should I say “holey”?

My great aunt lived around Daytona Beach in the late 1920s, when Florida was
still a sort of “wild west” place before the land boom. She wore pants, packed
a pistol to shoot the ‘gators that would sun themselves on the front porch of
her cabin, etc., etc.

She talked about how the Notherners would come down there, and while visiting,
would drive their cars out on the beach and wash them in the surf. She thought
that was funny as heck, knowing that they were just accelerating the rusting
process…

5312 x 2988 pixel picture in it.

I am sure there will again be complaints about not being able to read
inboxes.

Can we go back to the way where links to the picture on the mail server
were appended to the email?

Thanks,

Craig

I have no plans to go back to storing attachments on the server. With the size
of the last 10+ years of archives and all of the stored attachments server
space has had to be increased significantly over the years at increased cost.
Bob should have reduced his image size considerably. The way it is set now a
reasonable normal sized photo should pass thru without needing to be approved.

THat is consistent with salt spray encountered in windward areas near
salt water.

Cars will rust like that in windward side of Hawaiian Islands, like
where da thug in chief likes to hang out.
