Re: [MBZ] Need MacBook

2016-01-28 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Nowhere that know of. You're not going to find a 27" iMac for that kind of
money unless it's a C2D model, which I would not recommend.

There are some reputable resellers like OWC (mac sales.com) and PowerMax who
sell their own refurbs, but I can't vouch for them other than to say that I
have been a 20+ year customer of OWC and everything I have bought from them has
been great - but I have never bought a complete computer from them.

I would stick with an iMac with an Intel "I" series processor, as the days of
support for the C2D processors as far as operating systems is coming to an end.

Sure sorry to hear that, Mao. I feel for you. I lost my wife 8 years ago.

Go to www.bing.com and type in: "us government civil engineering jobs".
You will see many listings like these:
https://www.usajobs.gov/JobSearch/Search/GetResults?keyword=%22civil%20engineer%22
Read the lists every day and you might find something. Also, have you checked
"www.monster.com?
Out here in the Florida backwoods jobs are scarce, but I'll keep my eyes open
just in case.
Keep your chin up and try to keep busy.
Good luck,

Friend bought one not long after they came out, and I drove it. It wasn't
impressive. It had a stock American drive train and the handling was nothing
special. He kept it for years and finally sold it. IIRC the body was unpainted
stainless steel. Where do you find a bodyman who can do an invisible fix on a
dent in unpainted stainless steel?

Mao,

Big advantage to living in the desert southwest is winter season..
yesterday, short sleeves and put the AC on in the car driving across
town... mid 70's.. Rest of country is ice, snow, and cold...

Summer, however, is not for the faint.. routinely above 110 for months
on end. But, it's a "dry heat".. ;))

I left the mid west over 30 yrs ago and have not missed the winters.
But.. it's a big move. I'll keep an eye open for anything that looks

Yes, I am accomplishing that. i.e. the State took their property
(Diane''s body) to the State approved location (hospital) to declare
death. At the location, I gave no personal information but told my
31-year-old son he had to speak to them - I was speechlessly pissed
that I had zero ability to manage a dead body. Diane's body is
property of the State. i.e. State approved transport, State approved
death declaration, State approved burial management. All regulations
lobbied thru the years by these industries for the health and
well-being of the country, but... zero person-to-person consideration.
Okay, that RANT is done and two-weeks-old.

Heck we've been getting up over freezing every day lately. Supposed to be in
high 40s for the next couple days. We've barely had any winter at all, by the
end of tomorrow we probably won't have any snow at all.
I'm unhappy with this both because theres no snowmobiling but also because a
lack of snow and cold means we'll have worse bugs next summer.

Have you ever investigated the exciting world of landfill management?
My Dad is a civil engineer and became a landfill manager as a retirement job.
He says that most landfill managers are just high school graduates. He got
better pay because of being and engineer which saved the landfill a bunch of
money in consulting engineers that they didn't need to use anymore. He retired
last July but said that the landfill manager job was the best he ever had.

Mao,

Very sorry to hear that, I'll be putting some thought to your dilemma.

In the past I've heard that the best thing a new widower can do is
_nothing_. Do nothing but exist for a year, and then you'll be able to
make rational decisions after the grieving process has run its course.

Obviously your situation won't allow that, so maybe you should try to
decide as little as possible, keep your options open, and give yourself
some time.

I would not recommend picking up and moving across the country (but I'm not
you).

The Genii with run Apple Hardware Diagnostics on it to see what's up. That's
not definitive, but it could help.

I'm wondering if you've got one of the MacBooks with the bad GPU. They would do
all sorts of weird things. The Genii will know this and run the device serial
number through GSX to see.

Re: [MBZ] Where Old Republicans Go to Die

2016-01-28 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes
Methinks mayhaps sir andrew has never driven 1000 miles a day, nor
50,000 miles a year, in a 126!

I have never found a 126 to be a boring car, with lots of hours of
butt time in the 126.

IMHO, it is the finest MB produced after the 600. But the 600 is in
a class of its own, and outside the specialty cars such as the 600
and the 300SL, the 126 is THE finest postwar MB.

The 126 is a uniquely competent car, being quite reliable, safe, and
roadworthy over 30 years or more.

It is also a beautiful car

so, as usual, andy is just being a troll hiding under the bridge.

Speaking as one old Republican, I do not always find excitement to be a good

C2D = Core 2 Duo so avoid that one, its got inadequate RAM in any case.

C2D's run El Krapitan just fine. What is your service life expectation
for your purchase? I figure I'd get at least five years out of anything
that's running today's OS.

Our 10yo Macbook Pro is a C2D, and is running Yosemite. It sports
6GB of RAM (the max) and a SSD drive, and is really quite snappy and
serviceable. Should be good for several more years still.

Yes, you need enough/more RAM. No question, and this has _always_ been
true for computers. Sadly, Mo mac made today, except maybe the trash
can, is upgradeable at all.

Re: [MBZ] Need MacBook

2016-01-28 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I have a 17” MacBook Pro C2D with 8GB RAM and a 480GB SSD that runs El Capitan
just fine. In fact, I would recommend such a machine for someone who is only
interested in doing basic computing, such as email, Web surfing, etc. For
someone who might want more power or expect some longevity relative to the
operating systems, I would encourage them to go with an I series processor.

RAM for the C2D machines is cheap, cheap, cheap. For basic needs, buy one,
slap the maximum RAM in it, add an SSD and you’re good for some time as long as
you don’t try to get fancy.

All Macs typically are allowed the newest OS if it can run it. You just
have to download it. If you don't have a second Mac to do that on, you need

The I3 and I5 CPUs are not quad core. Are they really that much of an advantage

run a 64 bit OS ok (with enough RAM).

Obviously quad core is a big step up.

[MBZ] Jack

2016-01-28 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Just discovered the 94 S420 has no jack or lug wrench in the spare tire well.

Anyone got a spare jack and wrench they might be willing to part with?

I'm checking with the seller, as I suspect they might be laying around in a
corner at his place, but if not, I need to find one so the car has them. Darned
if that's not something I left in the S500 when I parted it out, dang it!

Re: [MBZ] Jack

I see them on fleabay for like $30 shipped, so if I have to buy one, so be it.
I'm betting when the PO had tires put on the car right before I bought it the
trunk got emptied out and stuff didn't get put back.

The youngster picked up a drywall screw smack dab in the middle of the tread on
his left rear tire last night. Luckily, he was at home when he noticed it. We
popped the tire off, took it to my tire guy (who plugged it for free, I might
add) and got it back on, all in maybe 30 minutes.

I don't want him driving around without a jack. I have a really nice folding
lug bolt wrench I gave him, but he still needs a jack.
