I suspect there is no plan to have these new cars on the road long enough for
them to get mileage badges anymore. Designed to fail spectacularly within 20
years and be so uneconomical to repair, that there is no value in even trying
to fix. And the parts will have aged out and be of no use to anybody who may
need or want a used part to effectuate a repair. Computers will be workless,
as nobody will know how to program them for your usage.

Driving the SL, I know there must be some software/hardware goober sitting in
his freshman computer class who could fab a compatible, but far superior and
tinier ECU for the cost of a Benjamin. Eliminate all the D-jet issues with a
box the size of a zippo, able to compensate for application in any D-jet body.
Volvo, Porsche, MB, VW or Skoda.

The computers just make a mess of it. The W220 spits out errors on the dash
every so often. Writes them in its little list of screw ups, then forgets
about them when you start it again. I have errors mostly for lighting that is
not failing. The computers just think they are failed. Blinkers blink just
fine, but dash thinks there is some cascade failure and picks a corner to say
is bad. Never is. I change all manner of bulbs until I figured out the car is
retarded. I doubt the new class of dealers are employing quality help anymore.
Used to be your wrench wrestler was a bit factory trained and certified. Now,
I bet you hire any idiot with a heartbeat and a tool box, so they have enough
guys in the shop for all the lifts. If your dealership has a few other brands
in the family, the courtesy van will haul the techs to the Toada or Huyndia
shop as needed.

I'm told the real issue with clear poly-carbonate material is making it
impervious to UV light damage.

Service life of the exotic shape headlights is about 5 years. After that
amount of UV light exposure the poly-carbonate plastic degrades at an
accelerated rate, losing clarity,, then structural integrity.. followed by
self degradation.

It turns cloudy, gets weak.. then turns to plastic dust.. life cycle over..

Programmed failure design and production process..

So how hard would it be to fix the AMG air bits? Either some sort
of stealer bits or bodge up something home brewed? Is it mechanical
or electronical or an unholy combo? Those E55s are hot rods, for a
few $100 to buy one it seems like it would be worth some rat

--R (sent from my miniPad)

That is what I was thinking too. I don't know how close it is to a
210. Most of the 210/211 suspension is the same as the 124, except I
think at some point they gave up the Mcpherson strut and went back to
something similar to the 123 and 126. An upper control arm and a
shock in the front.

I don't even know what chassis family a 2004 E55 would be. Perhaps
the airmatic in the E series was AMG only, so a junkyard car could
donate suspension components to put it on springs.

But the computers would possibly all go out of whack, and you could
end up with an unusable yard ornament. But, I'd guess the AMG engine
should be worth $2k.

But then there are the 16 other computers and all that crap to fail.
so I think it would be an exercise in futility, or a boat (a hole in
the water into which you dump money)

I doubt it sold for sub 2k, so who knows what kind of deal could be
made with the lender. They may be looking for 20 or 30k. Both cars
were repos. It could be simply that the owner crawled under and
snipped an air line. Clearly the dealers were all scared of it. I
didn't see the "MB guy" around. He is a character. The women say he
spends more on hair and cosmetics than most women do.

On the AMG, I would guess the the RTW cars get springs for the E
class. But the question is if you can fool or disable the computer,
or will it tell the other computers the car is screwed so it won't
run at all or in limp mode only.

On the S, Maybe all of them are on air. Airlift makes good airbags.
I am not afraid of airbag suspension. It is all the sensors and
computers I don't want to deal with.

4 airbags, some tubing and valves, and a small 12 v air compressor, a
pressure gauge, and a couple of switches make a GOOD air suspension
system. Most of the pilipino boyz in Honolulu have them.

MB has managed to take a reliable system and turn it into a
nightmare, proven by Clay's experience with a stealer, who could not
fix it, but COULD screw it up, by adding un-needed computer and
sensors to it.

'lectronics is good for cheepchinee throwaway radios. Not so good
for complex systems subjected daily to extreme heat, cold, vibration,
shocks and other things that electronic gizmos don't stand up to.

You do need to watch the thickness of the rotor on the ATE rear
calipers and anything on the front with an anti-rattle spring, as the
backing plate can hit the spring and cock the piston when the rotor is
thin.

After the W126, changing rotors is dead easy if they don't stick -- my
rears are always rusted on and require the application of an acetylene
torch or driving a few feet with the lug bolts loose to get them off.

Given the ability of those brakes to haul a fast car down to a stop
incredibly fast, you'd have to be nuts to complain. Those brakes
have saved me considerable damage from two deer collisions and kept me
out of a nasty accident on the interstate because I stopped faster
than the car in front of me. Hard to find fault just because the pads
need changing sooner than a Toyota.

I don't understand why people complain about MB brakes so much -- if
you drive like you half way intelligent, they last pretty much
forever, and I replace rotors every third pad change.

Since I get about 100,000 miles on a set of pads, I've only put
rotors on any of my cars once, will have to replace one on the TE
because the caliper rusted up and ate a rear one, the other side and
the fronts look pretty good after 50,000 miles and the pads are fine.

Put over 100,000 miles on the clutch in my Dodge Aries, too with no trouble.

Peter

I agree, and I've never had any problem with squealing brakes in an
MB either. This guy seems to work on much newer cars, but the brake
pads he showed look the same as in my mid 80s cars.

The rotor ridges are a very minor annoyance when changing pads.
Certainly nothing worth his long rant.

I put something like 230k on my first SDL and never put rotors on,
nor did it need it.

We used air sispension on the old 300SEs, and they got a reputation
of being expensive to repair. Many nice 300SEs went to the knacker
because the owner thought the cost of fixing the air suspension was
too much.

So, Lets put the problem on steroids! Lets add a while bunch of
sensors and a computer (all of which break) to this system. And
where the 300SE came with block that could be used to keep a car
driveable, lets make the thing rolloff bait when the airmatic craps
out. On the positive side, the other stuff inside the car seemed to
work.

Also drove a 2004 E55 AMG. No Missing, still rubber band tires, and
deflated airmatic.

both cars had trouble getting bids. The S was in the $2000 range,
the AMG was around $1500.

Remember a couple weeks ago there was a S55 AMG with deflated
airmatic, Clay's stealer who could screw up, but could not fix the
airmatic.

I sure do like my 123s, 124s and 126's!

Re: [MBZ] The crack is strong in this one

2016-02-17 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Wilton,
Crack is a street name for what is basically rock cocaine crystals, or
cocaine that is distilled to a crystalline form.. it is "more pure" than
powdered form, thus it's effect is stronger, addiction is virtually
instant, and it commands a higher price.. Perfect storm for your local drug
dealers.

I think... No personal experience with it's use, sale, or manufacture.. so
that information is only what the big boys in Cell Block A told me.. ;))

Re: [MBZ] AAA

2016-02-17 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
I've had AAA forever, don't recall which level. Before smart phones and
GPS, their maps and tour books were quite useful. The roadside assistance
is insurance; I used it twice in 40 years: once when keys got locked in the
car and once when SWMBO experienced a flat tire while a passenger in someone
else's car. So how capable are you and your dependents and what is peace of
mind worth? In my case, I give AAA annual membership to the daughter unit
(who lives on the other coast) every Christmas.

AAA is probably best known, but there are many similar services from other
organizations. For example, Andrew may prefer the plan from the NRA.

RE: you first point!
Uh! Glass is silica in a liquid state. Glass can be made into any
of the same shapes as the prastic junk.

Point 1 is bogus. Prastic may be cheaper, or may not be.

I take issue with point #2 also. The prastic surrounds on 123, 124
and 126 break far easier than the glass light

My conclusion: the prastic lenses are just one of hundreds of ways
the 210, 140 and later mbs are junk.

I have had AAA for a bunch of years. Started with the base level that got me
free 5 mile tow four times a year. Gas delivery and tire change included.

Next level allowed for 80 mile tows for four or five trips a year. The AAA
discounts are handy, and getting TripTic was cool before in car GPS. Trip
planner points you to cool places along the road.

Next level goes to 200 miles and you get all manner of other goodies.

The membership is per driver, so each person on the account with a card, is
another charge. This could be good for Regina, as she breaks cars and needs a
hitch home. The member is also able to use benefits for rides they may not be
driving. I have three folks on my account in three states far apart. I had to
use my account in AK, when SWMBA car had a dead battery in need of jump

[MBZ] AAA

I have never had AAA but get mailers every once in a while. Thinking
about signing up. Does anybody have it and is it worth it? What level
do you have? I think it used to be unlimited tows in a year up to a
certain distance but I see even the top level is only 4 a year up to 100
miles and 1 a year up to 200.

Give them two coats of clearcoat when you have them cleaned up. The
UV protectant is a thin layer added during extrusion of the sheet used
to make the covers, and you have just polished it off. They will
cloud and yellow very quickly without protection, and clearcoat is
probably the best thing going.

Re: [MBZ] some moron actually bought this

2016-02-17 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
A few years ago I was buying snowmobile carb rebuild kits from the shop down
the road for $25 each and selling them on eBay for $40 plus shipping.
I stumbled onto it when I had a leftover kit from a machine I'd sold so I
chucked it on eBay and was stunned when it brought more than I'd paid for it.
When we first moved into the house finances were tight and that was a terrific
sideline. I sold about 1 a week, it took us out to dinner a couple times a
month...

Cacaine based v. Opium derived. Both will provide numbing effects.

Crack will increase heart rate, while heroin does not.

Re: [MBZ] Amazon - was: Restoring headlight lenses....

2016-02-17 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Correct. But I didn't want a car to be VOR, so having the ability to get the
part at a competitive price the next day early was well worth it to me.

Again, I used to do the "combine my stuff to hit the minimum for free
shipping", but that rarely got me the goods sooner than 2-3 days. With Prime
nearly everything I get comes the next day or two days at the very most.

We have a large Amazon distribution center nearby (at which my oldest son
works) which even has some things delivered the same day, and even on Sundays!

[MBZ] sharing some good news

2016-02-17 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes

I just had a text from my elder son.
He has received the results of the 2 days of exams that he wrote back in
November.

He passed them all and is now a qualified architect instead of an intern.

Re: [MBZ] Subject: Re: Restoring headlight lenses....

2016-02-17 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
I use a Meguiar's product called "PlastX" Clear plastic cleaner & polish..

Sponge wheel in a cordless drill and a spray bottle of distilled water..
spray plastic lens, only use enough product on the wheel that it makes a
damp paste on the lens and doesn't sling off. Keep the polishing wheel in
constant motion.

When the material starts to look dry, spray with water and repolish..
repeat until you can wipe the paste off with a trial finger swipe and see
clear lens.

Spray with ample water and wipe with soft cloth, turning frequently..

Repeat as necessary.. badly damaged lens may take more than one polish to
achieve clarity.

If you catch it early enough, it's only oxidation of the surface of the
plastic.. wait, and UV will have damaged the plastic through it's
thickness...

One bottle, about $10 at flaps.. enough material to do 50 headlights, or
your headlights 25 times. Sponge wheels.. cheap.. Takes about 10 minutes..
and your night vision will improve.

They are sturdy, and the AGM construction means they can't
spill.

As I understand, the spiral design results in higher internal
impedance which is a main factor in the currant flow in
high-load situations - like starting a diesel with plugs
glowing when it's cold.

I haven't ever used Prime. But from when I originally

faster shipping or no minimum purchase for the free shipping.

In your case, I could have gotten the same deal - but a

2016-02-17 Thread clay via Mercedes
There does need to be some form of plasticizer to allow the old stuff to stay
supple.

the soft top window on Frosch is fogged. There are some products available at
marine supply shops to keep their large expanses of plastic window transparent.
I gave the Griots products a try. Plastic cleaner and polish. Not perfect by
a long shot, but it did cut through much of the fog. A 4" polishing wheel on a
drill did a good start. Keeping it under 1000rpm and going in one direction
(not using a flat pad) and not staying on one spot seem best. The friction
warms the plastic as you work.

I have to hit the chandlers for the finish product/topping

[MBZ] The crack is strong in this one

Guys, I'm starting to worry about the members of this list. It seems many of
you know way too much about crack...and more shocking, the ability to retrieve
it from a certain female body part. I realize that some of these vehicles on CL
"may well be questionable", the seller has every right to try to fool you in
order to get your money. So...if you buy the vehicle, it may not be the
seller on crack, but rather the purchaser. Try to stay drug free and think
rationally :-
