I contemplated that solution but the radio shack moved and the coax ends look
way too big. It is also a temp solution until I repair the massive hole in the
fender and put the Hirschmann back in.

Re: [MBZ] Radio plays

2016-11-26 Thread clay via Mercedes
That is much as I recall doing that.

The car end of the coax had a really nice void in the center tube where copper
wire should live. I did not want to but back a meter to find the copper on
that end, but the copper shield loom was perfect. I cut a length of copper 18
gauge solid wire to stuff in there to give the other end something to hook to.
The MB coax was fatter and being a tube, was able to accommodate the male form
I made on the antenna plug copper end. With the center mated, I pulled the
shielding wire back over, which covered really well. Electric tape covered it
all. I fired up the radio this morning and was able to pull in a bunch of FM.
 AM is a non function.

I went to an electronics shop back when and tried to find some antenna
wire connectors of some sort, and I found some, but they apparently did
not work as I can't get much signal strength. I guess I could try to
find some on some electronics site, or take some measurements and post
them here and someone can suggest a solution.

I think Curley's probably right, they replaced a turbo to fix a non-turbo
problem, then gave up, quit throwing money at it, and sold it to a bottom
feeding kleb.

Re: [MBZ] Let the Martha'ing Begin!

2016-11-26 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
One note I forgot about in the lat post - as a data point, I use rubber cement
to glue the moisture barrier back in place on the door panels. It’s cheap,
simple, and holds the plastic in place while allowing you to remove it without
damage in the future if necessary.

Got the carpets back in and the rear seat bottom cushion installed after all
got a good cleaning. Now I can put my brand new MB carpeted floor mats in the
car, although I really hate to as I don’t want them to get dirty. I’ll see if
there’s any ScotchGard around the house I can hit them with first. I think
they stopped selling the stuff, but I seem to recall seeing a can on the shelf
somewhere around the house...

Did the Diesel Purge with a filter change. Ran it out of an old RedLine Diesel
Catalyst bottle I had with a couple of pieces of clear hose, which worked
great. I’ll have to drive it later tonight to run an errand, so it will be
interesting to see if there is a noticeable difference in performance or
running. It’s been a long time since I’ve used Diesel Purge, so I’m not quite
sure what to expect.

The Continental radio showed up this afternoon. I’m going to hold off
installing it in the W126 and maybe put it in the W123 for a bit. I need to
check the speakers in the W123 as well - I think they’re the originals, so they
are probably pretty far gone. They all work, but the range is pretty limited.
Part of that could be the Becker Europa that’s in it, too.

Calling it quits for the day on the car. I might take on the engine mounts
tomorrow, I’ll decide in the morning. Transmission filter kit came today, too,
but I’ll hold off on that until I get the spring kits for the valve body.

I pulled the crank vent hose off and ran it for a while in the shop clearing it
out and repeated the test. I did not get very much oil if any at all that time.
I tested holding a paper over the vent hose and did not really get any oil out
of there either. I hooked the hose back up and did not get any oil again so
maybe it takes a while.

If this is the case I should swap valve covers.

Unhook the crankcase vent from the intake. Take it out on the road.
When you return, then try the same test you did with the crankcase vent

Re: [MBZ] Let the Martha'ing Begin!

2016-11-26 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Took the car out today for some errands. It’s such a nice ride and is
amazingly quick. I still need to resolve the stacked 2-3 shift so I’ll be
ordering the B1 and B2 spring kits this week, as I have a filter coming on
Monday along with some ATF.

Pulled the carpets and scrubbed them. Fortunately, they’re in really good shape
with minimal wear or dirt. No surprises underneath any of them, other than the
handful of change I always seem to find when I clean out a car. I’m still
wondering when I’m going to find the car that has a couple of stacks of $100s
under the back seat…nothing there but $0.52 in change. Not even a Cheeto. Darn.

Opened up the right rear door to replace the leaking lock actuator. Door
interior has never been opened based on the condition of the moisture barrier.
Cleaned the door panel and armrest with 303, polished all the chrome and
anodized bits with some rubbing compound. Tested the actuator and I now have
locking and unlocking on the door.

Opened up the left rear door to deal with the door check.

I gave the old door check the college try, but couldn’t recover it. The “cup”
on the end of the spring and ball cylinder was cracked and even missing some
little bits on one end, preventing the ball on that end from remaining captive.
I tried putting it all back together after cleaning and regreasing, but it
wouldn’t hold up. So I got out the new URO door check, greased it heavily and
installed it. Works fine, I couldn’t really tell any difference in
construction from the original one. Of course I’m sure the quality of the
metal isn’t as good, but functionally it seems OK.

Cleaned the door bits up as I did on the other and reassembled. Door opens and
holds just fine.

Break time to assist with some holiday decoration, then I’ll be heading back
out to do a Diesel Purge and install a new filter and cigar hose.

Rear seat. Its on the driver side, under the tray on the shelf. To

It is pretty easy.

How would it work? Would the pressures allow the butane to flash into
the propane tank, or to run in as a liquid? Start off with an empty
propane tank then get the butane in there, then add the proper amount

The better camping gas has iso-butane in it.
Butane is a bit low in the vapor pressure department for diluting propane

Re: [MBZ] Test Refrigerant

2016-11-26 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
How would it work? Would the pressures allow the butane to flash into
the propane tank, or to run in as a liquid? Start off with an empty
propane tank then get the butane in there, then add the proper amount of
propane?

A better source of butane.

Is it practical to premix butane and propane in a 20 lb propane
bottle? That would be an easier way to use the test refrigerant.

Re: [MBZ] Radio plays

2016-11-26 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I had to replace the antenna on my Suburban years ago, it is pretty much
impossible to snake a new antenna cable from the antenna to the radio,
so I cut the old one and tried to bodge up a connector between the 2
cable pieces but it has never worked right. I was thinking to finally
solder the center conductor then wrap something around it and pull the
sheathing/shielding back together and solder it or something. Is this
how you did it?

clean copper and pulled back the shielding, then mated the two. That should

I will say that if I look for a car for one of the boys in the future it will
