[MBZ] M104 block heater

2016-12-09 Thread clay via Mercedes
Overheat disaster in ND! #1 boy took the w140 300SE to work this morning in
-16f temps. May have had too much water in the system and we think his
radiator was frozen up. Work is only 3 miles away and he made it half way
there before the top hose blew off the block. He got the car home eventually
and we have been talking about best short and long term solutions.

I had sent him with a block heater from Gump, expecting he would have installed
it by now. He has not.The new hose is on order, and he has a generic hose
from NAPA to last him until then. He picked up G-05 to fill it up again.

SO, will the old block heater work for him, or should he look for another sort?
  Something like this http://dieselgiant.com/mercedesblockheaterinstall.htm
  ? In the meanwhile I
told him to put a blanket over the engine and rad while he has a 100watt bulb
on to at least get the thing to defrost. He needs to check oil, but probably
should change it to 5-30 for winter driving. Using 10-40 would be fine the
rest of the year. He has been using 15-50 due to the 320k miles on the engine,
but that is not going to work with windchill to -60.

Any other solutions you can think of? Wilton must have a few from surviving
Greenland.

Speaking of which, they do bottle and sell naturally occurring dihydrogen

now will die.

Bad stuff. Equally as bad as dihydrogen oxide.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Nitrogen vs Air for tires

2016-12-09 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
Is that the 78% N and 21% O plus minor amounts of the rest mixture? I think
you're on to something . . .

I know that N is used in aviation due the ease of filling high pressure
struts and the lack of water (it's cold up there), but I still can't see
any other reasons to use it.

But I don't remember Boyles law being different for different gases. Are
the thermal expansion coefficients different for N and O?

exact same car. I looked closer and it looks like they just bondo’d the doors

I did not visit my local dealer, but drove 20 miles north to a more reliable
vendor. The service guys are out in the open and expect you to have a
relationship with them. I like that idea over the first free guy getting to
work with you. The dealership has their clientele nailed. Almost all the cars
were C class, with an E or S for decor.

2016-12-09 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I had this exact car. See it here:

http://penoff.com/Penoff.com/1985_300CD_Photos.html

Fell into my lap. Belonged to the son of the manager of the MBUSA parts depot
in Montvale. Had every possible accessory and option you could get for the car
(those are Mercedes sheepskins on the seats.) Great car, sort of a weird
combination as a diesel and a coupe, but it had been properly tweaked ALDA-wise
and would pull stumps when you put your foot into the throttle.

It got replaced by the 250LWB as it was pretty impractical with two young kids
who were growing exponentially. Great car and my last diesel prior to
re-joining the fold.

I bid $11,250.00. Stupid money, but I’m betting it will pass ten grand.

[MBZ] Beschleunigerpumpe

2016-12-09 Thread Jon Agne via Mercedes
Hi Jaime,

I hope all is well with your family and your on-going projects.

I got my pumps after doing an on-line search for the BMW part Number. First
figured out which models used the Zenith INAT 35/40 and found an on-line parts
diagram. There were multiple dealers with on-line parts ordering, and they
seemed to have the best price. These parts do come from Germany so it took
about 2 to 2.5 weeks to get it. I opted for shipping ($12.95) as I did want to
drive to New Hampshire to get it. If you have a dealer close to you with
decent on-line prices, I’d go and pick it up.

The part number you want is: 13-11-1-285-451, it’s listed as Pump P at
$43.98ea. My net was $35.45ea.

Here’s a web page with a parts diagram:
http://bmwfans.info/parts-catalog/E9/Europe/3.0CSL-M30/L-M/mar1973/browse/fuel_preparation_system/carburetor_nozzles_gasket_set_carb_4

Here’s where I bought mine;
http://parts.bmwofstratham.com/productSearch.aspx?searchTerm=13-11-1-285-451

You might be interested in this magazine article I came across:
http://www.bobs-services.de/pdf/2003_12_angstgegner.pdf

It’s in German, but I have translated it into English using Google Translator.
Once I have it smoothed out, I’ll send it to you in word format.

I’ll also be texting you a photo of the pumps next to a rule. The blue cup is
what now comes in the rebuild kit.

I have a ton of questions, and I am still hoping to get down there to se your
project. I am afraid that I have an exhaust leak into the coolant. If that’s
the case, I am thinking I will just go ahead and do a top end overhaul. I have
no maintenance records and I know the car sat for at least 10 years.

Best,

Jon

Re: [MBZ] Injector Cores Wanted - OM617/Bosch NA31/34X

2016-12-09 Thread Jon Agne via Mercedes
I got a great deal on the Bosio nozzles on a vw parts site by just cross
referencing the parts number. Did the same when I needed new accelerator pumps
for the Zenith carbs. MB part was $140. BMW used these same carbs on numerous
models. Their part was $38.

I’d be interested in paying up for 5 decent cores if anyone has them. I think
it’s a great idea to do them all at once rather than one at a time.

Best,

Jon

I don't blame you especially considering the cost of aviation fuel.

6 hours and 14 minutes, plus a fuel stop, if there are no winds. It's 850
miles (without stopping at your place).
After thinking about it, my time is better spent building the Tailwind than
looking at MBs like I no longer own :-(

I've seen a number of people complain about the prices that the DieselGiant
charges. It's mostly newbies who don't know better to shop this stuff.

I'm good for cores now - Clay found me a set at his knackers. Thanks to all who

Probably would be my guess. I ordered 12 Bosio nozzles earlier in the year from
dieselgiant I believe and I see they are $47 per nozzle now on his site. I
think this is quite a bit more than I paid as I don't think I would paid that

Yes, on most of his stuff. Granted, there's some value in paying someone else
to do all the up front stuff, but I think that's part of the fun. He also
provides additional materials in some cases, too. For the most part it's
information that's readily available on the web.
