Re: [MBZ] Diesel Efficiency at Idle

If the motor idles at 6000 rpm it must be a gas turbine or something.

Consider a 3 liter (183 CID) engine that idles at 6000 RPM. The intake
manifold pressure would be near ambient for a Diesel but a gasoline engine
would idle at a manifold vacuum of about 20 inches (10 PSI). So the energy
required to turn the crank one full cycle (2 revs) would be 1830 inch-lbs or
152 ft-lbs. For 3000 full cycles per minute (6000 RPM), this is 457500
ft-lb of work per minute or 14 HP. So the hypothetical 3 liter gas engine
must produce 14 HP while stopped at a traffic light just to keep the engine
turning against manifold vacuum.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Mac OS

2017-02-05 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
While M$ has provided a decent 16 bit emulator, M$ in their training
materials, says that the 16 bit emulators should not be relied on, the
software should be rewritten for 32 bit winders (at the time I read it)
and fer sure for 64 bit winders.

Apfel had a good emulator, Rosetta (developed by another company) but
they chose to drop it after 10.6. Similarly, Apfel supported software
written for 680xx processors for several years in 7.x and later in
10.x. However they did drop it because of the overhead.

There do not appear to be third party emulators. At least my searches
did not find one to keep Eudora going.

OTOH, the ONLY reason I needed to change OS is simply because nobody
builds a reliable secure web browser for 10.5 or 10.6 any more, and
websites keep demanding ewer browsers to be able to see or use their
website.

By the way, How are the programs written in VB 5 or VB6 running with the
latest version of M$ Office installed on winders 10?

My guess is they didn't even make the trip to Winders 2000, or even NT4.

I looked into it but got a bit confused on some of the details of how

You may recall the previous post about a couple of my 8ft t12 fixtures
flickering and not lighting fully even with new bulbs and ballasts.
So I went down and bought 4 new 4 bulb 8ft t8 fixtures. I replaced
the 2 that I was having problems with and a 3rd that had a broken
tombstone. 2 of the fixtures light right up and put out plenty of
light, the 3rd the original one that has the worst of the problems
lights up 1 of the 4 bulbs, a couple others somewhat light up, and the
4th does not seem to light up at all, all flicker badly. What is
strange is that all 4 will fire up bright for about half a second when
the switch is first turned on the it goes back to not working. What
is also strange is there are 2 circuits and 2 sets of switch for all
lights in the shop. Most of the lights will turn on with one switch or
the other, but the 2 fixtures I replaced plus a 3rd t12 fixture that I
did not mess with but works fine seem to turn on regardless of which
switch is turned on. The 3 will stay lit until both switches are
turned off. But the fixture in question that is still giving the
problems seems to lite better with little to no flickering when one of
the switches is turned off. So what do you all think is going on
here? It is driving me nuts. The 4th fixture I will wire in and
install above the work bench. I may end up adding a couple more to
get more light on one end of the shop.

Most of the original wiring is thru conduit and the separate wires. For example
at the 1st fixture I have 1 white and 1 blue, at the other fixture I replaced
it was 1 white and 1 purple. There are a few other fixtures that were probably
added later as they are just wired up with romex coming out of the nearest
junction box. The 3rd fixture I replaced was wired like this. I would guess
something is crossed at one of the junction boxes. I'm going to have to try and
figure that out.

yes, anything is possible. If one (or more) of those 3 lights is not
fed by 2 romex cables, then you will have to trace stuff to the junctions

If those 3 are together, then it should be something like this:

(POWER)=(light)==(light)==(light) where
the = represents white and black lines.

(POWER)is most likely a Jct box.

Normally the power from the breaker would go into a Jct box where red
and black wires (generally black and white with black tape on household
wiring) from the switch meet up with the power line and the load line.
(in this case, the load is the lights)

Someplace you are getting power from two different circuits int that
string of lights

Best practice is to only have wires from one breaker in one box. Often
however, especially in industrial wiring this is not the case. For
instance 240 or 480v 3 phase (4 cables) in a box or in conduit with a
120Vac control circuit.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Mac OS

2017-02-05 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes

yes, I did nearly the same!

I bought a new HD, put the old HD in an enclosure.
Boot from the external USB (original drive) to be sure all is well.

Install el crap on the new HD
  Migrate.

6 mo later, bought a OWC SSD and carrier.
  Removed the dead superdrive
  Installed ssd and the carrier
Copied everything from the "New" hd to the SSD
CHanged startup drive to the SSD
Zoom!

Need to find a way to mirror the SSD to the HD. (Haven't tried)

"New" Core I7 for a total of : ~ $450 spread over almost a year.
Dead computer: Free
Repaired MB (Logic board in apfelspeak) $200
HD and enclosure: ~ $100
SSD $125
USB "dvdRW" $20

Sure beats spending $2700 I cant afford for a new one~

[MBZ] more shop lights

2017-02-05 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
You may recall the previous post about a couple of my 8ft t12 fixtures

I went down and bought 4 new 4 bulb 8ft t8 fixtures. I replaced the 2

2 of the fixtures light right up and put out plenty of light, the 3rd
the original one that has the worst of the problems lights up 1 of the 4
bulbs, a couple others somewhat light up, and the 4th does not seem to
light up at all, all flicker badly. What is strange is that all 4 will
fire up bright for about half a second when the switch is first turned
on the it goes back to not working. What is also strange is there are 2
circuits and 2 sets of switch for all lights in the shop. Most of the
lights will turn on with one switch or the other, but the 2 fixtures I
replaced plus a 3rd t12 fixture that I did not mess with but works fine
seem to turn on regardless of which switch is turned on. The 3 will
stay lit until both switches are turned off. But the fixture in
question that is still giving the problems seems to lite better with
little to no flickering when one of the switches is turned off. So what
do you all think is going on here? It is driving me nuts. The 4th
fixture I will wire in and install above the work bench. I may end up
adding a couple more to get more light on one end of the shop.

The star ones suck, thats whats wrong with them. IIRC there was something about
the star that obscured your ability to reef down on the mounting bolt. Maybe it
was the York AC compressor, I don't remember now.
On the '83 the "wrong" thing was me not realizing you had to loosen the
mounting bolt before tensioning so I bent the tensioner, it never worked as
well after that...

S0mething was wrong.  I don't think I have touched the alternator or
belt on the 240D since I put a new alt on, maybe 15 years ago.  I
suppose it may be time for a new belt, just "becuz"

Ooooh, I forgot about the star adjuster ones. Those were the worst. Ugh.

I’m going to drive it a little bit more and then check the tension again. I
just love using my Kriket tool. Simple thing that’s super cool.

Anyone happen to have the specs for the belt tensions?

Actually, the AC compressor wasn’t bad at all. The worst was the
alternator. I went slow and applied some Kroil to the adjusting nut so
it wouldn’t break.

Found out that the “chirping” I was hearing when I was taking off from

Winter has finally arrived in Florida - it was a balmy 78F with no
humidity as it’s been all week. Wonderful weather to work on the car…

Some background:

PO replaced the master cylinder or booster during his ownership, and
while doing so slathered brake fluid down the firewall and under the
car as it dripped. This stripped pretty much all of the paint and
undercoating on the frame rail and area around the trailing rod joint.
This was making me nuts since it’s the only place the car has any
visible rust, even if it’s only surface rust and you would have to get
on your hands and knees to see it - but I knew it was there….

So I scraped all the loose undercoating off to where it was firmly
bonded to the frame and cleaned all around the suspension rod joint
mounting. I got one of the “kits” that the POR-15 folks sell for
$19.00 on the Amazon and used all the chemicals to properly prep and
paint the surface. After it got tacky I sealed it all up with some 3M
Professional Grade Rubberized Undercoating. Nice.

While I was under the car and poking around I noticed the belts on the
alternator were really loose. Hmm. Power steering belt wasn’t bad, but
AC compressor belt was loose, too. Fortunately, this was a job I had
anticipated since so much of the rubber and soft parts on this car are
tired due to age and lack of use.

So off I went to loosen all the belts and replace them. Arrgh. All I
can say is if there was a conversion kit to change an OM617 from
fractional horsepower belts to a serpentine belt, I would be all over
it. Luckily I didn’t encounter any issues with the funky alternator
adjusting bolt. I got to dig out my Krikit belt tension gauge and put
it to work - probably the first time in 15 years I’ve used it. What a
great tool.

Lastly, in the middle of the POR-15 stuff since I had to rinse, dry,
etc., etc., I prepped and painted my wiper arms as they were pitted
and had a little rust and after all was done I installed them with new
Bosch wiper blades to replace the (gasp!) Rain-X wiper blades.

Needless to say I took a pre-emptive dose of my 800mg time release
ibuprofen. I’m thinking I’ll be paying for this in the morning. Low
impact tomorrow, just car washing.
