my w220 has been laid up for five weeks. Still waiting for it to get fixed.
Cluster rebuild is expensive and worth more than the car

I was thinking on that today as a gal passed me in her 57 chevy. Got to
thinking how way old that car was. How they seemed antique back in the 1970’s.
This, while driving the 82 SD. Then I was considering why I felt that Allen
was more reliable than the w220. That the new cars are really only reliable
for about 10-12 years, then the computers and electronics fail and repair cost
exceed the value of the car.

[MBZ] power seat

The seat controls on the 300SD are sort of messed up. I was wondering if I
could swap in the Gen II controls into a Gen I. The old style is hard wired,
so I would need to hack into the wires and splice the connectors. Anybody know
the pin out or wire designation?

Well, not really. I think I'll pass on that one.

I have been thinking, however, of replacing the '82 240D/3.0.
Perhaps with an '84 or '85 300SD, or maybe a W124.

Got any suggestions?

So that's why he is asking $23,000.

[MBZ] Put some used injectors in The White Whale

2017-03-21 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
I had some free time tonight, so I decided to clean up the two fouled
injectors (that had been run without heat shields) and put that whole set
back in while I wait for Mark to properly set the injectors with the new
Monark nozzles.

I'm not very good at cleaning injectors apparently, the engine ran pretty
badly once I got them all in and the lines bled. I ran a can of diesel
purge through the car straight, that helped immensely, and then went for a
test drive. The idle is not as smooth as it used to be, but the knocking
is about 95% gone. I'll run these injectors for a few days and then swap
them out with the Monark nozzle injectors later this week.

I've also got fuel leaking from between the two halves of the nozzle holder
body on #1 injector. I'd need more practice and better tools before I'd be
any good at injector work.

The switch went bad on this car several (15?) years ago. The
replacement did NOT look as robust as the original. It is not that bad
to change if you are young and supple. Key in the on position, and the
plug pulls out. 3 screws and the switch is in your hand.

I have had one light switch go bad in 40 years and 15-20 cars. I think
that was on a 62 car.

I also replaced the big german switch on an Erka spiral mixer (about 10
HP) It is about 4" dia and 6" long with all wires held on with screws.
Takes a while to change all them!

Check the connectors on the bus bar at the top of the right fender
under the hood. I forget what all feeds from there. Loose or corroded
connectors are unlikely, but you've checked everything else.
Also, the ignition switch module on the back of the steering lock
assembly has a number of wires going to it and several multiple
contacts. It's a complex switch, and considering how many things it
feeds, could conceivably be the problem. Supposedly you can change it
out from up above the drivers footwell, but it looks pretty difficult
getting to it and switching the wires. I took out the steering wheel
locking unit/key tumbler on which the switch is mounted to change it,
and that was a PIA since MB designed it to thwart thieves.

On the OM603 and earlier engines, I think Bosch are the best choice, that's
what I just put in my '87 wagon. Beru is preferred for the OM606 engines
because they seem to be made of sturdier stuff (they publish a maximum
torque that can be applied when removing the plugs, haven't found that for
Bosch) and they were OE.

Oh yeah, Marshall said we had to use Bosch, you don't want to go down that

Interesting about the Beru GPs, too. They’re tough to find and about 3x the
cost of the Bosch. That’s what I’ll replace it with. The Bosch is about a year
old, I replaced them last May.

the GP light is an indication that you have GPs. They are not related
to mileage. Beru have the reputation to last longer, but that is no
guarantee.

Dan Penoff via Mercedes
March 21, 2017 at 4:55 PM
The 350SDL started acting weird this morning….

No glow plug light when I went to start it up, or if it did come on it
was only for a few seconds and I missed it. Ambient was maybe 50F,
possibly a little warmer. About 5-10 minutes later as I’m driving down
the street, the glow plug light comes on and stays on for a short
time, then goes off.

Weird.

At lunch I went out and the light lit for maybe 5-10 seconds and went
out. Again, it came on while I was driving a few minutes later for a
short time and then went out.

Same thing on the drive home today.

As I look at the service manual, it says that one of the fault
indicators is no preglow lamp at startup, then the light can light up
for approximately one minute while driving. Fault: One or more glow
plugs defective.

So I’m wondering if I’ve got a bad glow plug. I just swapped them all
out less than 10k ago, probably even less than that.

But - there’s more…

The AC started acting up. Hot air, literally HOT air coming out of the
vents. I checked the monovalve, it’s good. Checked the AC system,
everything is good there as far as pressures and charge, but the low
pressure line is not cold. High pressure is.

I put a clamp on the coolant line to the cabin to isolate the heater
and drove the car. I can get duct temps down to about 70F and that’s
it. Pressures are correct for the ambient temperature and humidity.

It’s almost like I was getting heat during cooling, but I’m not
getting decent output from the system to begin with.

Both of these issues started at the same time. I can’t see how they’re
related.

???

Re: [MBZ] 240D 123 Lucas gremlins

2017-03-21 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
Many fuses are downstream of switches and get power only when certain
switch configurations are set. F1, for example should only get power when
the light switch in park or headlight OR with the light switch in left or
right standing AND the ignition switch in off or acc.

You really need to look at pp 104-105 (power distribution) of the ETM and
identify specific circuits that fail to get power even with the switches set
right. Power or no-power at any fuse doesn't indicate anything unless you
know the switch settings.

Basically, ALL of the power (except starter) comes into the light switch
first and most of it is fed from there to the ignition switch via two wires.
But there is also one wire from the light switch hot feed to the fuse box
fuses 2 and (I think) 6 that should be powered at all times; this wire it
also powers the windows through a relay. Fuse 2 is supposed to power turn
signals (among many other things). The two (a and b) window fuses should
only be powered if the window relay is powered through fuse 12 (ignition
switch in run or start).

Hope this helps.

Pull all those fuses that don't have power, repeat check for voltage on both
sides of each fuse holder. Check for short to ground wherever there is no
power. Report back.

If there is no power with the fuses pulled, then you need to check the power
feed to the fuse box.

Re: [MBZ] 240D 123 Lucas gremlins

2017-03-21 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
Try using a test light instead of a meter. Sometimes, a meter is
sensitive enough to read proper voltage but there is not enough current
to run anything.
I had that issue with a windshield washer pump in a Mercury Sable. It
was an intermittent problem with the car. Sometimes no washer fluid
would pump.
I traced the power back to the pump and it had good voltage so I assumed
the pump had gone bad. Got a new one and installed it and it did not
work either.
I mentioned it to my b-in-l who is a mechanic and he was the one who
said not to use a meter on things like that. He said to use a test light
and assume the voltage was good if the light was nice and bright. I
started tracing wires again and the light would not come on down at the
pump. There was a relay in the fuse box under the hood that was
involved. After the relay there was no light but before it there was.
There were 2 relays the same in the box so I swapped them and the pump
worked. But so did the circuit that I had swapped the "bad" on into. I
pulled the thing out and pushed it back in a couple of times and
everything was back to normal. Contacts on the relay were just not
making good contact I guess. No further problem with the circuits on
either of those relays for the rest of the time we had the vehicle.

That was my first thought, but no amount of wiggling could create a
closed circuit, where generally with a bad switch, the contact can be
made by wiggling the key, or switching on, off, or wiggling key

Y'all may remember a couple weeks ago I posted about the electrical
gremlins in the 240D (81)

The thing acts like it is possessed by the prince of darkness (Lucas)
not designed by MB/Bosch

These circuits all went out at the same time:
Gas gauge
temp gauge
turn signals (4 ways work)
both window circuits
heater blower

Today I dug into the cluster and loosened and tightened the chassis
grounds behind the cluster.

It resulted in no change.

I left the switch on in the process so if bad contact was made good,
I would hear the blower or other circuits working. There was nothing.

Where to look next? Either there is a bad feed to multiple circuits
in the fusebox or bad ground that affects all these circuits.

I'll head out with a meter to be sure all are getting juice, but my

I can’t see how they’re
related.

Really?

I don't have a diesel 1/2 ton 2wd to compare, but the 4wd half

___

If you really need the 3/4 ton, then you must work it pretty hard.
I had an 86 Chevy Suburban - 2WD 1/2 ton with the last of the 4bbl
350's and it served me well for the better part of 10 years.
The 700R4 transmission was trouble but most everything else was
reasonably bullet proof. Some rust but I had it repaired and painted and
it was still solid when I sold it.
I got $3300 for it around Christmas time in 2000 with about 200K miles
on it. Engine did not use oil. Interior was still pretty decent. I had
the front seat repadded but the upholstery was original.
Mine was a Silverado so decent trim level and 3 cloth bench seats. Red
with the Cream stripe down the sides and a tan interior. Rear air which
reminds me that the AC was troublesome too. I kept it going but spent a
lot of cash doing so. The lines that fed the rear air were aluminum and
road salt would eat them. After the 2nd replacement, I used rubber
belting to make shields for them under the vehicle and sprayed them with
oil each fall in an effort to prevent damage. Seemed to help as the last
set was still in there when I sold it.

"As is". I'd allowed the six months of storage pass, and then he could
have started charging me $30/day for about two weeks of storage, so if I'd
really insisted on him keeping his end of the bargain, I probably would
have paid about $450 for the detailing, which is not worth it to me.

Re: [MBZ] Becker BE-1432

2017-03-21 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Larry,

Those "guys in New Jersey" are the Becker factory folks, Eddie and Tom. They
run the remains of what was once Becker.

If you want them to treat you well, just mention that you're a friend of
Jaime's. (grin)

It's possible the unit is borked, but before you pronounce it dead leave it
powered up for a day or two and see if you can code it. If it fails when you
try you have a couple of options:

If you know the vehicle's VIN that it came from, a dealer can give you the code.

With the serial number, the guys at Becker can give you the code. They might
want to charge you, however. If you go this route, tell them you have a code
for it and give it to them with the serial number. That way you can verify if
it's the correct code or not.

I had a rebuilt 1492 from Becker that wouldn't code once. Eddie and Tom both
went around and around with me on it until I sent it back to them to be sorted.
Not sure what they did but it came back working with a new code.

It's a half-ton. That's a pretty heavy mark against it for what I
do.

No pictures of the engine compartment.

The glow plug system on these is not so great. To increase the
appeal to "normal" drives who can't bear the thought of waiting
for a proper glow cycle, these shipped with "fast" glow plugs that
will burn out and swell pretty easily. So there is a controller
that is supposed to keep the glow plugs from burning out.

The best option is to replace the originals with AC60G, which is
the appropriate voltage for the system - but it doesn't heat up as
fast so the controller shuts it off early.

Best option, I think, is a manual button. The controller can be
easily modified to be triggered by a small, low current switch.

All that to say, "new glow plugs" may - or may not - be a feature.

It has the third seat, so will seat 8 adults.

New oil cooler lines is good.

The transmission is almost certainly a 700R4. By '87 those are
pretty good, but rarely last more than 150-200k miles.

Front end rebuild parts are worth at least $400.

Barn doors in the back. That means there isn't an opening window,
and they can bang into cars, trees, walls. But also they operate
a lot longer than a tailgate does after rust invades.

It looks like it has the rear air conditioner unit.

The 3rd seat appears to have the side seat belt buckle supports intact!

Looks pretty good - if a '1/2 ton is suitable.

Close. I'd much rather have an OM603 turbo or even better the OM606 turbo
with an injection pump from a 3.5 liter OM603, but I'd take this one, for
about $4k or so.

No rusts!

I've got a line on a nice white '94 wagon with engine problems, floated to
SWMBO that I could probably pick it up for $500, swap in the engine from my
'87 wagon, hint hint wink wink. I don't think the Central Committee will
approve this one though...
