I would ask for more pictures of the interior so you can judge how bad it
really is.

In the pictures of the back of the car, I can see the top of the rear seat
looks like it is falling apart.

The operative word is "was"

Add $2500 for the interior
Add $3500 for repainting

and he should pay you to take it.

And now is ruined, but shiny for a few days.

If the transmission came from Sun Valley, that does lead credence to the claim
that he's an enthusiast.

But, then again, Ray bought a 1980s diesel Benz from an enthusiast in Florida,
and he's had all sorts of trouble trying to get home to Michigan in it...

[MBZ] 1983 300SD in Kansas City

2017-05-24 Thread Craig via Mercedes
https://kansascity.craigslist.org/cto/6078399208.html

I posted this earlier, but called the owner just now.

He wasn't very talkative and I didn't know what all to ask him beyond,
"You have had it less than a year; why are you selling it now," and "What
would it take to make it perfect?", "What type of refrigerant does it
have?", and "Did you sand through the clear coat?"

The ad says,

Repairs since June 2016: $9,750
• A/C Compressor Repl.
• Steering Wheel Lock Repl.
• Vacuum Pump Repl.
• Headlights Repl.
• Potentiometer Repl.
• Transmission Repl. With Rebuilt Trans. (Sun Valley Transmissions
- Van Nuys, CA)
• Sway Bars Repl.
• Motor Mounts Repl.
• Fuel Filter Repl.
• Air Filters Repl.
• Cruise Control - Repair (Replace Amplifier)
• Tachometer Amplifier Repl.
• Dash Lights Repl.
• Complete wet sand, polish and detail of original paint/interior,

so that answers a lot of potential questions.

- He said he is a car enthusiast and that refurbishing cars was his hobby.

- He said that to make it perfect, one would want to redo the interior
(which would cost him $2400, which he didn't feel was worth it to him)
and maybe re-paint it. He did say he sanded through the clear coat in
  some areas.

- He said the car had been converted to R134.

2017-05-24 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Can you send me some pictures of the finish? The worst parts? I ask because a
lot of the process is determined by how bad the paint condition is…

No matter what, go out and get yourself a clay bar at FLAPS. It will probably
be bundled with a bottle of “clay bar lubricant” which is nothing more than
filtered water with a few drops of dish soap in it to act as a surfactant. When
you use it up just refill it with a bottle of water and a couple of drops of
Joy or whatever dish soap you’ve got in the cabinet.

shopping cart and leave it there for a day or two. They’ll send you a reminder
first then the next day a “If you check out in the next 24 hours we’ll knock 5%
off the total” message.

They’re not super consistent about it, but if you’re not in a hurry it’s worth
a shot.

Re: [MBZ] Low miles '91 500SL on BAT

2017-05-24 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
The car actually presents well in the color scheme with the chrome wheels,
which I find hard to say, as I usually hate chrome wheels.

While it’s a nice example, I wouldn’t touch an R129 that’s older than 1996 for
a lot of the same reasons I wouldn’t want an early W140 given the choice. A
lot of weirdness with ignition and fuel system on these early models that can
be difficult to sort out.

2017-05-24 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
Ok, well maybe in Concours condition. But, a 250 is much less desirable than
many other cars in equal condition. Don’t get me wrong. I loved my 250. It
was my first Mercedes. It was bright red with the 2.8 engine and ivory
interior. It was one of the few cars I have had that always attracted a crowd.
I was always getting lots of questions about it and lots of folks who wanted to
ask questions about it.

You'd be surprised. An unmolested one owner, documented 220 or 250 in concours
condition would easily attract five figures.

Maybe the 250C could be a collector, but the regular 114 250 is a nice car, but
its never going to demand collector prices.

[MBZ] Speaking of paint and detailing

2017-05-24 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
Have any of you tried Dr. ColorChip?

http://www.drcolorchip.com/

My brother tried it and the results were practically magic. No exaggeration.

He tried it first on a 1983 Cadillac and Dr. Colorchip sent him the paint with
the kit and it worked perfectly. He fixed some chips on the front grill and
then fixed a fairly large area of road rash (from gravel/rocks) on the lower
rocker panel. From 5 feet away, I couldn't see it at all. The color was
perfect. I had to get right up on it to see that it had been touched up and
even then, it was very impressive. He takes his cars to car shows and has won
numerous awards with his cars, so they have to look good.

He also has a 1971 Pontiac Grand Prix. He wasn't sure of the paint code so he
ended up removing an outside mirror and they were able to tell him the exact
paint code (vermillion red) and sent him the mirror back with the paint kit and
it worked perfectly too. I may have to try it. I am always skeptical of stuff
like this, but I saw his in person and it worked!

Re: [MBZ] OT My 2014 VW Beetle TDI Convertible will soon be bought back by VW

2017-05-24 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
I bought it on June 25, arrived home on the 26th, and the settlement was
approved on the 28th. I think that the PO bought a vergasser convertible. After
purchasing the new 2015, I discovered that the PO removed the wind deflector as
the mounts were installed in the trunk which were not installed in the 2015.
The 2015 top boot matches the beige interior, and the 2014 came to me with a
black boot. My theory is that he used the wind deflector in his new car, and
switched out the boot as well.

Good call! I guess I assumed that he had had it vacuumed and filled.
At HF yesterday I noticed their vacuum pumps were about $100 and $160, and
their gauge sets were about $60.
IMO he should fix the auxiliary AC fan sometime during the repair and put a
shroud on the main fan if he can find one because he's going to have problems
in heavy stop and go traffic if he doesn't, and those problems might include
engine cooling as well. (That's assuming his '87 acts the same as my '83).

they don't rust away in lost wages either. When I went to junkyards
there, they kept hauling in trailerloads of what looked like perfectly
good cars.

I think the rule of thumb for the yippies, dinks, etc, is if the repair
cost more than 1 or 2 x the current car payment, it goes away. They buy
a new(er) car.

Older cars in Southern states? I'm at the in-laws in central Florida

Kind of puzzling to me. They don't rust away down here.

What gives?

Re: [MBZ] BAT Away!

2017-05-24 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
I forgot about an example. I bought the lwb off poos, flew down to Tampa,
picked car up and stayed the night in st Pete. Next morning battery was dead.
Alternator was dead. Did I call poos? No. I got to an autozone and bought a new
one and installed it in the parking lot.

Hmm maybe poos does sell piles of crap. Lord only know what that car would have
brought on BAT.

[MBZ] Semi OT: BMW Question

2017-05-24 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
I am pursuing a job opportunity in Memphis and if I get it, I will be moving to
Memphis. I currently have three cars: 1. 1999 BMW 740iL with 102,000 miles
2. 2000 BMW 740iL with 231,000 miles and 3. 1992 Ford F150. I really want to
keep the truck, but I am not sure it will make sense to move it also. So, the
real question is what is my 2000 BMW 740iL really worth? I still love driving
it. It has tons of options but lots of miles. The rear bumper has good
hole/crack in the bottom of it. The interior is still in really good shape.
There is a small spot of rust on the rear passenger door about the size of a
lemon. It is surface rust. Everything works. Any thoughts?

But, the CDs are going for crazy money recently. I was at an auction last year

condition and had 3 binders of receipts and records that showed the owner was
beyond meticulous about maintenance. The engine bay was spotless but was not
covered in armor all. It was that butter yellow color with the saddle tan

That is the way it is supposed to work. Unless the seller actively concealed
something (and your story is close), then it is part of the purchase of a used

Geez. I had a better trip from Port Charlotte to Charlotte Michigan in the $550
W116. Spent the night in northern Georgia, found a low tire the next morning,
blew it up before I left the motel, then when I got out of Chattanooga traffic
I noticed a vibration in the rear. Turned out to be a dead shock absorber,
which the seller masked by running 20psi in the right rear. That was my only
mishap though (unless almost looping it in the rain when it downshifted into
first in a low speed corner counts as a mishap). And IIRC he told me it needed
shocks before I left Michigan.

VW

The end is near for my ownership of the 2014 Beetle TDI Convertible. I
scheduled my buyback appointment for Monday, June 12, 2017. It will be going
back with around 16Kmi on the clock. Coincidentally, that is nearly a year to
the day from when I originally contacted the seller in Templeton, CA. I paid
$21,500 for the car, and $1600 for tires, the convertible wind block and TDI
floor mats which will be installed on my new 2015 model. The buyback offer is
$28,841.61 which may vary slightly due to mileage, and the new car was $24,749.
The ownership experience with the 2014 has been wonderful! Even better, it
gave me the opportunity to purchase the brand new 2015 without any additional
cost other than the flight, hotel and fuel for the awesome road trip. I know
that it’s not a Mercedes, but it certainly has quite a lot of fun factor, and
the little TDI is zippy! It does use Pee, AKA Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF)
which the 2014 does not.

Interesting auction. I'm not going to guess where this will land. When
these first came out with their instant pop up roll bar they were the most
amazing technological advance since the slow cooker.

Could a no-design sports car possibly look any more boring than in
black/black? I think not.

$34 there. They ding you $15 for shipping, and the thermostat is over
$3 more to start with. FCP won this one.$34 vs $20.

The thermostat for the H looks like it will cost me at least $45, and
the 2 short hunks of hose cost that much again. One is 1.25 x 1.75 long
and the other is 1.75 x 4" long. You have to buy a foot. BUT it looks
like very good hose. It should last another 40 or 50 years. What I
took off looks like it was made in the 60os or 70s. The new stuff is
better hose.

Re: [MBZ] 87 td AC woes

2017-05-24 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
I forgot to say the last work was done by my mechanic, who does nothing but
old mercedes. I assume he flushed it all out and rechecked it
appropriately. But I am getting tired of paying people for it to not work.

Of course it is a swap to 606 and some of the wrong pressure sensors had
been used, and the control unit from a sedan, so it was not straightforward
to sort out. But he thought he had all parts back to stock and working.

That's what you are told, but that's not what is true. Has anyone
mentioned land subsidence? When the northern part of North America had
two miles of ice on it, that pushed that part of the continent down,
causing surrounding areas to rise. Now that the ice is gone, the part
that was pushed down is rising and the parts that were pushed up are
falling.

Re: [MBZ] 87 td AC woes

2017-05-24 Thread MG via Mercedes

Only one thing that Gerry left out.

Did you connect a vacuum pump after you put the NEW receiver
drier in and a new expansion valve. Each time the compressor
quits all the cleaning has to be done and a solid vacuum pulled.
Living in Florida I run the pump for at least an hour just
because I have the time and it helps boil any moisture out of the
system. Then close the gauges off and see if the vacuum stays the
same after an additional hour. If so then you put the freon in.

If you didn't do the vacuum then there is air and moisture in
there and the new receiver drier is probably dead with moisture
right from the beginning.

great for awhile, then gradually gets warmer over an hour or so, and that's
it.
Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this further? Tired of throwing
compressors at it. Nippodenso units from rock auto, same as original. Of
course the motor is a 606 now.
Thanks

~
Has the AC auxiliary fan been coming on?

Did you disconnect all the lines and wash, then blow, them out using AC solvent
from NAPA or elsewhere in the opposite direction from their direction of flow?

Did you replace the main freon filter/reservoir?

Do you have a set of AC gauges (about $60 at HF)?. If so, what were the
readings when the AC was not working properly? (Carefully learn how the gauges
work so you don't accidentally send high pressure into low pressure cans of
freon and/or the low pressure gauges, which could be very injurious or fatal).

Which lubricant did you use when you replaced compressors, etc? Did you add the specified amount?

Did you add the freon with the can upright or inverted?

If you added the freon using the typical low pressure gauge that comes with some cans of freon, what was the pressure reading when you finished?

Did you have a household or shop fan blowing through the radiator and condenser
when you added the freon? Did you have the AC set on max cool and max fan speed?

What has the temperature been where you live?

There is supposed to an (add-on?) filter that can be installed in the return
line just before the compressor, but I've never heard any discussion about it
on this list, or have seen it listed anywhere. Also, I have no idea where it
would be installed without cutting the return line. This is supposed to keep
the shedded debris from old freon lines from getting in to the AC pump and
other parts.

Which car is this? All my experience has been with an '83 300D and '83 240D.

Most FLAPS have a book on auto AC repair which should give you the correct
amounts of freon and oil to add. The different types of oils should not be mixed
(see the book for a discussion of that.)

It's 2 am here in Florida. Later this AM someone with more knowledge than I
should be able to help you.
Good luck,
Gerry

Re: [MBZ] 87 td AC woes

2017-05-24 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
Thanks for all the ideas.

There is a thread on pelican about it also. Air in the system, low airflow
thru condensor were two ideas.

I don't know whether fans were on. I doubt it actually, because it is loud,
so Iwould hAve heard it. I will try it again and look. I only used the ac
once.

My main fan has no shroud, so maybe I need to go electric SPAL there also.

Condenser plugged is possible. But why would it work great for awhile then
quit? I would think it would not cool well at all.

The tank is old. Pressure switches are new. Expansion valve and drier and
evaporator and pressure hose are new. Compressors have been rebuilds. Last
one from rock auto.

Ambient was only in the 80s.

Will follow up.
