[MBZ] OT 2014 Beetle TDI Convertible RIP

2017-06-12 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
As of 2:40 PM PDT, I no longer own the 2014 beetle! According to the TDI
ambassador, this Beetle will probably be sold elsewhere, possibly south
America, since there is no legal fix for it to drive here in the states. At
least that Beetle gave me a great introduction to the TDI experience and lead
me down the path toward the even better 2015!! The new Beetle will be in the
stable for many years to come!

[MBZ] Speaking of the 300D

2017-06-12 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
(124) It rolled up 300,000 miles a few weeks ago. It had about 150k
when I got it from some dude in Memphis. It has an autohaus (Dallas)
stealer tag on it, as does the 240D. Somehow we found out it had been
through the big Dallas charity auction. It was badly neglected, but now
it runs great and drives like a track car. It is great fun to drive.
Hare and turtle compared to the 240D.(turtle)

[MBZ] Fuel hose

2017-06-12 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Looks like it will be time this fall to replace all the rubber fuel
hoses on the 300D (124). I changed all of them at one itme and used
flaps hose, maybe 8-9 years ago. That is pretty good life out of flaps
hose.
Do any of you buy german fuel hose, and if so, where do you find it.
7.5mm or something like that.

I was hired by Progressive Insurance to defend a MB versus horse case
several years ago. It was an ML. The owner/rider was walking it across
the street from the arena where they held a barrel racing competition.
It was at night and not well lit. The horse was very dark brown and
the ML came around a corner and hit the horse. It was injured but did
not have to be put down. But, it was never going to barrel race again.
It was a bad deal because there was a lot of fault to go around. The
horse was a previous barrel racing national champion. Working on that
case introduced me to a whole new world. It is amazing how much money
is spent on horses and barrel racing!

By the way, the ML took the hit and kept on ticking. It need some
minor bodywork, but nothing terrible.

[MBZ] Nice 280E for sale

2017-06-12 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Near Mao's territory, but south of mao. SW burbs of Chitcago: Not mine
etc. Belongs to a neighbor of a friend of mine.

Seller's description:

"The car is a 1983 280E, W123, M110 engine I6, bought in Germany and
transported to California, this model was not sold in the US, the last
US 280E sold in the US I believe was 1981. There are ~143K miles on the
car. The car starts without any problem and is quite fun to drive.
There is oxidation of the paint on the roof of the car, and two dings
from being hit by a falling tree branch on the hood and passenger side
fender while in California. The wheel well on the passenger side rear
panel has a small ding in it as well. The antenna motor is present and
works, along with an aftermarket radio with CD player, probably
installed on the car's second trip to Germany in 1990. The moon roof
motor is conspicuously absent from the car, not sure when or why it was
removed. All of the power windows work, including the passenger
sideview mirror motor. As is usually the case, the vacuum actuated
locking mechanism is in need of repair because of leaky diaphragms, but
the keys work fine to lock the car up.

I had the car mechanically inspected about a year ago and there are no
major mechanical repairs required, mostly deferred maintenance, and most
of the required repairs have to do with aging rubber components such as
the tires, belts and hoses, and most recently the gasket for the
transmission pan (I am not sure when the trans fluid was last changed).
The oil and filter was changed last fall. The battery is new this
spring. I replaced the fuel hose from the tank to the fuel pump a year
ago, and also some leaking fuel hoses near the injector.

The upholstery on the seats is in good condition except for a patched
hole on the driver seat. As customary with MBZ of this age, the seats
are comfortably German. The back seats were covered with seat covers
for as long as I can remember. I removed them this past spring and the
upholstery is in good condition without any staining. The lid to the
first aid kit is cracked but all the pieces are present. The owners
manuals, in German, are with the car."

Curley I have pictures. On a glance, I did not see
oxidation on the paint, but you can judge for yourself. Let me know if
you are interested, I will put you in contact and send pictures. It
seems like a nice low mile M110 123.

I am very open, time wise. The damaged window is now covered in clear 2
inch wide packing tape to keep it together, has vinyl film on the inside so
it's a "glass sandwich" for now water tight and cloudy, but operational
as a fixed rear side window.

So, your option as to when you want to pull the donor window and ship it.
Somewhere along the way, give me a price and I'll of course pay packing and
shipping to get it here safely.

Re: [MBZ] Green C124 Cab on BAT

2017-06-12 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
Found a newer greenie, somebody talk me out of it.
2014 Cruze diesel, 90k mi, two owner (2nd owner put 22k on it in about 8
months, wonder why they ditched it so quickly?) dark green, light tan leather.
They were only available with 6sp automatic so the computer could run the revs
up for automated DPF cleaning, no provision for manual cleaning cycle other
than paying the dealer $150 to hook it up to GM's network and have GM initiate
the cycle. Used car dealer asking $10k, Edge Pipeline's sold car search tells
me one like it would probably go around $8k at auction.

If I bought it, I'd take it to the dealer for the latest NOx recall, which
includes a manual regen, then drive it home and yank the cleaned DPF out of it
and flash the computer. Powertrain warranty expires in another 9k miles anyway.
I bet I could get 60mpg out of it at 70mph.

In a lot of states, not all, glass claims have no deductible on your

These are routinely selling for this much or more. There have been several
that have sold for $50K and $60K. I agree its crazy. But, the market is so
insanely hot for these right now. The Wagonmaster Pedigree (if true) will
help the price go higher.

I want one of these. But, I will never be willing to pay $40K or more.

Not much you can do for the $3-4k repair limit on that car.
Seems like everything worth under $10k market value is a nearly automatic total

Uni-body and a hit like that will twist it. So step 1 is to chain it onto a

It wouldn't be hard to do but it'll take lots of time and time is money and its

Re: [MBZ] '88 Jeep Wagoneer on BAT

2017-06-12 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Those were the cars of swells back then, urban assault vehicles of the
day for Mipsy to take the chirruns to soccer practice and her tennis
lessons.

I recall once being out at Great Point on Nantucket, which is like 7 or
10 miles or something out on the beach/sand tracks, you have to be
prepared for eventualities because a tow back to civilization can cost
big money. We were out there in my 87 Blazer, a full-size beast, very
agricultural machine. I always took tools, boards, shovels, compressor,
tow straps, gas can, etc. None of that took up much room but it was
essential. We were out there for the day and good part of the evening,
fishing, grilling, etc. Some swell in his yuppy clothes with Mipsy and
the kids in their preppy dress haul up in one of those and park maybe
100ft away, unload their picnic hampers, etc. spread out the LLBean
blankets and such and proceed to do their thing, eat some brie and stuff
they bought at the high-end deli or got the cook to make something.
They stay a coupla hours then load up and get ready to head out. I
don't know if the guy didn't know how to use the vehicle or what, didn't
engage 4WD or something, but in about 10 seconds he was mired up to the
axles in the soft sand. He gets out and stares at the situation for
awhile, he and Mipsy start trying to dig out sand with their hands which
was not going anywhere. I had a beer while watching this spectacle, my
wife finally tells me I need to go help the guy. So I wander over and
chat with him a bit, it is is clear he is some Nooyawk yuppy banker
asshole or something who had no fnclue as to what he was doing, but
wanted to do it for the experience to tell all his nooyawk ahole buds
back at the bank how much cooler he was than them. And get some use out
of the expensive Jeep he bought for Mipsy. I asked him if he had a
shovel (no), boards (no), had aired down his tars (??huh?), etc. etc.
By this time he was feeling properly chastised so I says come with me,
he takes off his Topsiders and follows me to the truck. I pull out the
shovels (those little folding military entrenching tools, amazingly
handy, you can make a hoe, shovel, pick, etc.) and some boards, toss
them on the sand and say "Here ya go." He stands there and looks at
them then finally says, "What do I do with him." By this time I am
actually starting to feel a bit sorry for his sorry ass, so I open up a
shovel and explain "you dig out the sand with this in front of the
wheels and under the truck" then put these boards under your wheels and
try to drive out of the holes you just dug." So he totes the stuff
over, he and Mipsy start kinda halfassedly digging. I crack another
beer and watch this for awhile, finally my wife is laughing and saying
you really need to go help the guy. I was rather enjoying the show but
my better self overtook me so I take him a beer and ask if he needs any
help, by this time he would have paid me good money to solve his
problem. He also really liked the beer, I think they had just brought
some chardonnay or something to sip, WTF kind of dude does that? I
think my daughter even came over to play with the kids or something to
give Mipsy a break. So anyway after awhile we get the sand dug out, the
boards under the tars (which I aired down to 8psi), I tell him to give
it a go. Of course he did not put it in 4WD (I have no idea how he
managed to get out there like that, but there you go), I think that
vehicle had manual hubs, so he promptly dug the rear into the sand
again, which we then proceeded to dig out again. By this time Mipsy was
in a total state of pissoff at the guy, probably missing her spa
appointment or something, so by then I was actually feeling sorry for
him, what little manhood he had was now completely eliminated. Totally
emasculated. So then with my expert instruction (including showing how
to actually engage 4WD), and I might have put a tow strap on my truck to
help pull him out, I don't recall, and another beer or two I finally get
him out of the hole. He actually wanted to give me some money, I got
all offended and told him no man this is how things work out here,
everyone helps out, and tell him DO NOT STOP UNTIL YOU GET BACK so he
wouldn't mire down again. We did not see the vehicle on our way back
late that night, so I am guessing he made it, and maybe learned some
man-lessons in the experience. Nooyawkers, Lawnguylanduhs, what a
seriously sorry lot.

A buddy of mine has a 66 230SL 4spd hat looks like that, and is original
white body, black interior. It is gorgeous. He used to have Corvettes
when he was younger and kept breaking them, someone told him this would
be better so he traded a Vette and some dinero for it. Said it was the
best car deal he ever made, got him hooked on Benzes. He never had any
trouble with it other than regular maintenance, everything is extremely
simple on it. It is a true sports car, you have to actually DRIVE the
car, rev the engine, work the gears, etc. peppy enough, not fast by
today's standards, but fun as hell.

The 2012 ML has a metal key in the fob, I guess it might work the doors,

Curley,
I prefer Mann filters also for my old 617 diesels. However, I have used STP
filters and was pleasantly surprised and happy with them. I find them sometimes
at AutoZone.
Just a suggestion.

Re: [MBZ] Anybody in indiana?

2017-06-12 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
Nothing yet... I asked the auction house for a VIN and photos of the
engine. Also if it's running and if they have a title.

After some careful research, I determined that the shifter couldn't be
original in this car. Which means possible engine swap, which kills it for
me.

Let's see what they respond with.

Jaime
