It looks like I was talking about both.  the VW cottage cheese (CC) (or

The phaeton was the one I talked about being an attempted knock off of 
the maybach, which was in itself ridiculous.  Both phaeton and maybach

how-to-for-32-bit-efi-macs- late-2006-models/and got both CentOS and Linux Mint 
to work. Of the two Mint seems to work better. With CentOS I changed the 
trackpad tracking speed and lost mouse control.
Mint had better trackpad control right out of the box, the monitor brightness 
and volume controls also worked natively. I did have to modify the keyboard 
layout to make the command key work, its still not quite right but not too bad.
This laptop will live mostly at camp so I don't have to drag another computer 
there to check trail camera footage, yay free computer!

building a "car for kings and sundry turd world dictators!"

I had one of these in law school.   It was an 82 or 83.  It was a grey market 
car and had the import metal plate and you could tell where the rods were 
installed to strengthen the door.   I liked it except the seats had the german 
cloth seats which gets a little itchy once it wears.  Otherwise, the M110 was 
pretty peppy.   I bought it my first year of law school for $1500 from a local 
Mercedes Mechanic.   He and his Son ran the place.   After about a year I 
traded it on my 1990 300D 2.5 that OK Don later bought and now Kaleb has.   He 
must not have remembered me buying it because he gave me $1700 on trade.  The 
124 diesel was twice the car in my opinion.  Of course, it cost much more than 
twice the price.  The son ended up keeping it for a while as his own car 
because he didn't want to put miles on his 124 500E.  It was one of the last 
ones made that was a cooperative effort between MB and Porsche.  Now that was a 
spectacular car.

Near Mao's territory, but south of mao.  SW burbs of Chitcago:  Not mine etc.  
Belongs to a neighbor of a friend of mine.

Seller's description:

"The car is a 1983 280E, W123, M110 engine I6, bought in Germany and 
transported to California, this model was not sold in the US, the last US 280E 
sold in the US I believe was 1981.  There are ~143K miles on the car.  The car 
starts without any problem and is quite fun to drive. 
There is oxidation of the paint on the roof of the car, and two dings from 
being hit by a falling tree branch on the hood and passenger side fender while 
in California.  The wheel well on the passenger side rear panel has a small 
ding in it as well. The antenna motor is present and works, along with an 
aftermarket radio with CD player, probably installed on the car's second trip 
to Germany in 1990.  The moon roof motor is conspicuously absent from the car, 
not sure when or why it was removed.  All of the power windows work, including 
the passenger sideview mirror motor.  As is usually the case, the vacuum 
actuated locking mechanism is in need of repair because of leaky diaphragms, 
but the keys work fine to lock the car up.

I had the car mechanically inspected about a year ago and there are no major 
mechanical repairs required, mostly deferred maintenance, and most of the 
required repairs have to do with aging rubber components such as the tires, 
belts and hoses, and most recently the gasket for the transmission pan (I am 
not sure when the trans fluid was last changed).  
The oil and filter was changed last fall.  The battery is new this spring.  I 
replaced the fuel hose from the tank to the fuel pump a year ago, and also some 
leaking fuel hoses near the injector.

The upholstery on the seats is in good condition except for a patched hole on 
the driver seat.  As customary with MBZ of this age, the seats are comfortably 
German.  The back seats were covered with seat covers for as long as I can 
remember.  I removed them this past spring and the upholstery is in good 
condition without any staining.  The lid to the first aid kit is cracked but 
all the pieces are present.  The owners 
manuals, in German, are with the car."


Curley I have pictures.  On a glance, I did not see 
oxidation on the paint, but you can judge for yourself.   Let me know if 
you are interested, I will put you in contact and send pictures.  It seems like 
a nice low mile M110 123.

Pro 2.1s that had 32bit EFI and wouldn't boot Linux from USB.Near as I can tell 
there is no way to make these laptops boot Linux from USB. I did finally find:

Bt wrong. VW is not sure what they are going to do with all the buy back 
vehicles. Part of the deal is they are not allowed to sell them elsewhere. 
Appears that there is a fix. I was talking to a guy driving a 14 at the gas 
station the other day and they said they fixed his and he got about $10k out of 
them to boot.
