How do you get to the front bearing?

As I mentioned, "When run on 12 Volts, it runs more slowly than the
other fan on the car, but it does run."

It's all buttoned back up and the car is back on the ground.

Tough luck! Glad you didn't get hurt worse, Clay. Keep us posted.
Numbness can indicate damage to the spinal nerves, or even worse, to the spinal
cord. You might want to check on wearing a neck brace until you see your doctor
in order to prevent any further damage if an intervertebral disc has collapsed
or there is a broken neck bone. Drug stores usually have the soft type which
allow movement.

face, my forehead hits the wheel and and I am all con-fuddled.

Some granola, hairy legged, birkenstock gal slammed her honda into my bumper. I
am bleeding from the contusion on my head, she is going into shock and calling
the cops. Her front end went under my bumper and took out her hood, headlights,
bumper, and bent the frame and radiator. My bumper is going to need a
replacement. Might need shocks as well, but the rest of the car is just fine.

The muscles are starting to get tight and pain setting in. Beginning to have
numbness at the neck and shoulder/arms. I thought there was some slurring of
speech about an hour after I got hit, but just my perception. I put a call in
to my medico for an appointment to see if there is lasting damage.

We will see what Insco wants to do to make the car better. I could just grab a
PnP bumper and do the work myself. But there is cash to be had for the repair.
Medical will be the greater part of the payout.

I have recovered MB fans in this manner. If they’re not completely frozen up
sometimes you can resurrect them with a good soaking of Kroil and spinning them.

Hopefully you’ll be able to get this one going, just be careful if it’s loose
and you put juice to it - they’re very powerful and will gladly remove digits

That reminds me, do they have freeway rest stops in MA where you can crawl into
the back of your ML for a few hours and catch some sleep? In Michigan, there's
usually plenty of room in the truck/trailer side of the rest stop unless it's
foggy or snowing and all the truckers are looking for a place to hide, and our
rest stops are around 60 miles apart.
Right about now, I wish I had that McNalley trucker's atlas that Craig told me
to buy. Hmm, what do they cost with Amazon Prime?

After I finally get the radiator installed tomorrow, or give up and order an
unbent one, I'll see if a twin airbed fits back there with the front seats full
forward. But that would sort of eliminate my cargo space. Not much room for
tools, jacks, ice chests, and dog crates if the whole back of the truck needs
to be clear floor for the bed. W163 is really short. 6' from the tailgate
appears to be in the middle of the front center armrest/storage bin.

I called Marc at SUN VALLEY MERCEDES TRANSMISSIONS

He said to check the cable to the transmission from the throttle linkage
(which is what I have been told by members of this list, but haven't had
time to do yet) by disconnecting it from the linkage and pulling it to
see if it acted like there was a spring on the other end.

If there is spring tension, he said, there might be problems with a valve
in the transmission (he said the name, but I don't remember what it was).

He did say that manually shifting the transmission would not do damage to
it. I specifically asked that because Shirley and I are planning to make
a road trip to Dallas to attend the Great American Trucking Show and
Austin to visit some friends like last year. We plan on leaving Tuesday
right after her follow-up appointment with the surgeon who did her total
hip replacement. So, if I don't have time to fix it correctly before then,
I can use it like it is.

I'm working on the car today, first to replace the failed auxiliary fan
(for which Kaleb sent a replacement), then to charge the A/C system
(for which Kaleb sent a can of R-12), then to replace the driver's door
actuator (for which Kaleb sent a replacement) and trace down any locking
system leaks, then I don't know what, but I'm sure I'll find
something. :-)

Looks like the bow in the bottom rail might hit the truck chassis when I drop
it in place.

It must have fallen out of the box (the box had been opened and retaped) and
gotten jammed in a conveyor. I couldn't believe that it felt like a solid oak

I thought about that, but the fan is pressed onto the motor shaft. Even
if I did have a press, the pressing operation is not symmetrical -- that
is it's meant to be pressed on, but not off.

I called Marc at SUN VALLEY MERCEDES TRANSMISSIONS
 15468 Cabrito Rd.
 Van Nuys, CA. 91406
 Phone: 818-782-2300

My 2003 is just like in the etrailer videos, take out the four little bolts

with the left end hanging out because of the antenna wire (easier than
unhooking the antennae like in the vid), run four big bolts into the factory
frame holes to hold the hitch on (I ordered the Curt which is just the hitch
instead of the Draw-tite which also includes a couple of frame reinforcement
pieces). Now that I've got the bumper plastic loose, I can put a hitch on my ML
in 5 minutes and put the bumper back on in five more, unless I have to notch
the bumper to clear the hitch.
I also ordered the powered trailer light box from Curt, same part number used
in the etrailer video. That reminds me, I'll have to post a pic of what the
Action Auto baboons did to the battery terminals on this thing.
Rather than go back in the store for a box wrench, they just twisted the
terminals until they could get their battery pliers on the nuts, did that to
both terminals. If the owner witnessed that, it would be grounds for
justifiably whacking the jerk in the back of the head with his battery pliers
before throwing them across the street.

Some hail cars can be barely damaged, some can look like they were vandalized

I thought about buying a 89kmi 2011 Hail Charger yesterday.
Beautiful car, I didn't even notice the hail when I casually walked around it

I looked a little closer yesterday, I'd be perfectly happy to drive it just
like it is for the rest of its life. IIRC it went for $3300 plus fees. I can
just imagine filing the paperwork for the rebuilt title.
Repairs performed: None, and none needed. (I wonder if that would generate a
letter from the state instead of a roadworthy title)

Re: [MBZ] I own a ML350

2017-08-19 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes

What year is your ML? W163 or W164?

My 2003 is just like in the etrailer videos, take out the four little bolts
that hold the bumper plastic on, pull off the bumper, put it on the cargo floor
with the left end hanging out because of the antenna wire (easier than
unhooking the antennae like in the vid), run four big bolts into the factory
frame holes to hold the hitch on (I ordered the Curt which is just the hitch
instead of the Draw-tite which also includes a couple of frame reinforcement

Re: [MBZ] Today's Fun

2017-08-19 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I started to undertake this process on my own until I realized my formerly
substantial supply of wet sanding paper was somehow nowhere near what I
recalled it being.

That said, it’s not a terribly difficult job to do if you had all the right
grits of paper available. I had a couple of gaps in grits, so when I took on
the left front headlight a week or two ago I had to skip some grits which
yielded a less than satisfactory (to me) result.

Hence the reasoning for buying the 3M kit. For $13 I figured I couldn’t go
wrong.

I bought a 3M kit from O'Reilly when it was on sale to do the left
headlight on our Peterbilt 386. There were sufficient amount of materials
to do the left headlight (which is MUCH larger than an automobile
headlight).

But after I did the left headlight, the right one, which looked great
before, didn't look so good. I started working on it but ran out of
sandpaper.

I was able to get hook-and-loop sandpaper of sufficiently high grit only
at the NAPA Paint Store in Albuquerque -- the local FLAPS didn't have
hook-and-loop sandpaper, and the local hardware stores only had grit 320
and coarser.

The kit I bought came with the sealant, but I haven't put it on yet
because I'm intending to go back and touch up the left headlight and
complete the right headlight.

Re: [MBZ] I own a ML350

2017-08-19 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
You have to be careful on the MLs putting on a tow hitch if you are
actually going to tow something. Hooking into the lights will cause all
sorts of mayhem with the light nanny, and the ABS and stability nannies
will go bonkers pulling a load. To actually retrofit a proper tow
system costs about $2k, I guess less if you do it yourself if you can
source the proper bits. There are some kits with a new nanny to fool
the lights that aren't too much, but the actual towing control upgrade
is a spendy piece of kit.

I put a tow hitch on mama's ML, just to use for a bike rack. I tried to
get the stealer to do it when we bought it CPO and he quoted $2k+,
didn't even want to think about throwing it in on the deal (though I did
get roof rack crossbars out of him). I looked into it and found that
all the bits were not cheap, so the $2k was fairly reasonable with some
labor for the hitch install and hooking in the new nannies upgrades.
They of course would not just do the hitch but would have to do the full
package. The hitch took me maybe 3-4 hours, you have to take off and
cut into a thin aluminum heat shield (dremel with cutting wheels) to
allow the new hitch, and R&R a bunch of other stuff. It was not hard,
just kinda time consuming. I ordered it from etrailer I think, they
have pretty good prices and instructions with their kits.

What a relief. I was afraid I might have bought a damaged car.
Mitch.

I suppose I should write up a "today's fun" tonight, but since it was raining on and off
while I was at the yard inspecting cars this week, I totally missed out on the fact that my new ML
had deer hair embedded in the remains of the headlight. And I never bothered to read the inventory
sticker on the windshield until I took it off this AM, it says "State Farm Insurance - Other
Comprehensive".
When I saw "Other Comprehensive", the dim light bulb in my brain finally lit
up. If there was no police report, and the insurance claim isn't reported to carfax
because no 'collision' was involved, it's an accident free car still.
It looks like it'll be a good driver/tow rig after I get the headlight and
hitch installed Monday. The odo says 188k. The oil change sticker says to come
back at 199k and they didn't fill in the date. Oil looks like it came out of
the bottle the day before the deer hit.
Radiator will be here today, should I drive 100 miles round trip to the nearest
place that's open Saturday and has a used AC Condenser?

[MBZ] ML Radiator fun

2017-08-19 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
There is a plastic tie, speared through the middle of the condenser, radiator,
and a big rubber donut pad between the two coolers.
Is that factory? It looks like one of the mounting gizmos that comes with a
stupid aftermarket transmission cooler.

Any way to remove it non-destructively?

I suppose I should write up a "today's fun" tonight, but since it was raining
on and off while I was at the yard inspecting cars this week, I totally missed
out on the fact that my new ML had deer hair embedded in the remains of the
headlight. And I never bothered to read the inventory sticker on the windshield
until I took it off this AM, it says "State Farm Insurance - Other
Comprehensive".
When I saw "Other Comprehensive", the dim light bulb in my brain finally lit
up. If there was no police report, and the insurance claim isn't reported to
carfax because no 'collision' was involved, it's an accident free car still.

Mitch.

[MBZ] Today's Fun

2017-08-19 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Low key this weekend, as I have to sit for a GIAC certification test on Monday
so I need some study time…more alphabet soup!

I was going to drain and refill the transmission as well as replace the filter,
but my FLAPS is only carrying the high mileage Valvoline MaxLife ATF, which is
not what I wanted. Wally World has the regular kind but not in my store, so I
ordered two gallons of it for $17/each ($8 less than what FLAPS wants for it)
but it won’t be here until Thursday.

Second thing on the list was to polish the headlights, which were getting a
little cloudy.

From what I’ve seen during my search for a W210, the first gen cars seem to
have a lot worse headlight lens clouding than the second gen models. Maybe
it’s just due to the age, but I rarely saw a second gen car with cloudy
headlights like I did first gen. Anyway, mine weren’t bad, but I could see
where they were starting to cloud around the edges so I figured I would be
proactive.

Got this kit from 3M via Amazonia:

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B001AIZ5HY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

They make about four different versions of this kit ranging from $12 up to over
$30. The difference seems to be whether or not they include the masking tape
and a sealant in the high end one. I’ve got all sorts of 3M blue painter’s
tape around the house, so I didn’t need any of that.

Masked the heck out of the headlights and raised the hood. Followed the
instructions using a corded drill, as there’s no way a rechargeable would ever
hold up through this.

Pretty straightforward, took me about an hour from start to finish. Wasn’t
difficult at all and they provide plenty of materials. When I was done I wiped
the lenses down with IPA (not the beer kind) and put a couple of coats of
Collinite #845 Insulator wax on them to protect the lenses.

Some observations:

Cover everything. The spatter from the compounding step will get all over
everything.

Careful around the edges. The sanding disks can easily cut through your
masking tape if you’re not careful, gouging your paint. I was careful *and* I
did a couple layers of tape around the edges, as tape is cheap.

After I was done with the headlight lenses I tried programming the integrated
remote in the rear view mirror. I wasn’t sure if it would do the rolling code
stuff that my garage door opener does due to its age. It did! Huzzah!

So now to clean up and hit the books.

Re: [MBZ] The top news story on the 10pm news tonight

That’s pretty damned funny.

“You should report it to the automaker.”

Yeah. Like MBUSA (or any other manufacturer, for that matter) is going to care
about a car that’s 20 years old and damaged from a road hazard.

Did you report it to your insurer? I gotta believe there’s a way that cold be
covered under insurance somehow.
