I have a '76 300D in Caledonia Green and live in Oakland CA.

I did an EMERGENCY u-turn when I saw this very car several months ago. Chatted
with the owner/guardian briefly. He seemed to be a knowledgeable enthusiast and
the car looked quite fantastic. I guess he moved north, which explains why I
haven't seen it around since then. Not sure he will get that kind of money for
it, esp since it is a 240D vs 300D. Still, it was a nice car!

Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
October 25, 2017 at 12:58 PM
So I go to this public hearing last night, and signed up to speak.
The MC is going through the list of people, I am maybe 5 or 6 on the
list so he calls out Rich Thomas (Floyd's alter ego). I get up to go
to the lectern, and some guy back in the audience behind me stands up
and starts in about something. I'm like WTF is this about. So then
the MC (whom I vaguely knew) asks the guy, excuse me, who are you?
And the guy says Tom Richardson, why is this guy going up there, I
want to speak. So the MC says no, I called Rich Thomas and I say
"That's me!" and the other guy is all confused. So I make some remark
about some alternate reality, paralllel universe, that is me dropped
into the meeting blahblah, and everyone is laughing, the guy says yeah
but I have hair! and I say yeah but you're not nearly as handsome and
we back and forth a minute trash talking like that. Audience loved
it. I had them hooked!

The guy got his chance later, he was boring, umlike my testimony.

Tom died in 2014, I think. He hadn’t been on the show since maybe 2010 or
2011, I believe.

And yes, since that time all of the shows they’ve aired have been “best of”
sort of shows. There hasn’t been a new show with the exception of the show
that Ray did to honor Tom after his death that I know of.

The way it was played out was that Ray wasn’t going to make any more “best of”
shows, which is why a lot of affiliates decided to drop the show.

My two W124s reliably cranked out 30-31 in town/short highway and 29-30 on the
Interstate, lower if I drove fast.

The 5-cylinder version did better, I think, maybe 34-36.

Highest tank I ever had was 36 mpg, but I think that was with an improperly

The base interior was about the cheapest looking and feeling thing

Maybe GM's attempt to get everyone to upgrade to a more optioned car but

Differences would be encountered depending on temperature, speed, wind
etc. Going down hill helps too. Best determination is long term
averages. My worst tank was still over 15 mpg and my average was about
21 mpg. That is where the diesel has an advantage - city driving. It
uses very little fuel at idle.

Re: [MBZ] 123 fuel mileage - was: Two Questions

2017-10-26 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes

Very true. In 1976, most American cars would have been real guzzlers.
My 86 Ford Taurus with a 3.0 would do close to 30 mpg on a good day but
it was fuel injected and had an overdrive transmission and was no doubt
more aerodynamic. A big improvement over the previous generations of
American cars.

27/28 seems to be about the top end of the OM617 as far as I’ve experienced,
and that’s with an automatic. I would expect you could glean another 1-2 mpg
with a stick and driving carefully, but beyond that I doubt one could obtain
any better mileage.

Thanks, all!

I can recall getting 27/28 or so in my '85 123 wagon, which was non-turbo
with a five-speed manual trans. No AC, manual windows and sunroof. I
might have gotten 30 mpg once or twice, maybe? Hard to remember now.

My '85 190D with 2.2 and manual five-speed would typically get 35-42 mpg
and once I got 45 mpg when I kept the highway speed at about 60 mph. That
was a very frugal car to own, but the interior was so darn cheap and crappy
and I sold it at the top of the market for $5500.

I have a 240 manual transmission that has been getting 28 MPG for
15 years or so. That's a bit better than the other 240s with
manual transmissions.

The 300 turbo with automatic transmissions have gotten from 21 MPG
to about 27 MPG. Typical has been 24-25. The one that got 27 has
a possessed engine (weird problems, again and again), so maybe
that had something to do with it.

Almost certainly not. But the lack of wear on your "good" car

If you got a car that managed to get >50 MPG on the highway you
could save 2.5 gallons per day, or less than $10 per day. Drive
it lots for a year and the fuel savings might amount to $3,000.
Add the cost of tax, license, insurance, etc.

Looks to me like it would have to be a 50+ MPG car for less than
$2,000 to "make it pay for itself" in a year. If there are other
reasons to have the car, (it's diesel, it's pleasant to drive,
status, keep miles off the BMW, avoid driving the BMW in the
salted snow, it's more dependable than the BMW, etc) then buy it
and enjoy.

I think, but don't know, that the first generation 4matic was like ASR, if the
computers can't control the differentials the car can send all the power to the
wheel with the least traction. In other words, you might not notice it's
missing until the first ice storm.
If the car's local to you, drive it and see. But that "can't idle" problem may

No idea about Mercedes 4Matic but can relate some non personal
experience with the late model all wheel drive Ford Taurus.
The transfer case type unit that feeds the rear differential is not
considered a repairable item. Apparently there is no expectation that
one will service it either so no lubricant changes are done.
One just buys a new one when it gives up. If driven hard, the case may
crack and then it becomes junk.

Having thoroughly researched 4Matic as it relates to both W124 and W210
chassis’, I can tell you that the W210 chassis with 4Matic is very robust.
Sadly, the sheet metal usually couldn’t handle the climates these were
typically used in, so they rusted away, but if you can find a clean one there
is nothing to fear.

The only real drawback I know of is increased expense with some suspension
repairs such as front shocks. A lot more labor involved to R&R the 4Matic
versions. That’s really about the only negative I could ever come up on them.

Re: [MBZ] Two Questions

2017-10-26 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
I paid about $1270 delivered for a deer damaged 2003 ML that needed a radiator,
fender, fog light and headlight.
2000-2005 Prius are often cheaper on CoPart, but unless there's a good way to
check the traction battery by computer, you have no idea if it's still a hybrid
or just a gasser. Saw a 2005 Civic Hybrid go for $4xx plus fees this morning
with mostly cosmetic front end damage. A 2005-2010 Malibu or Impala would be
dirt cheap too, and roomier than a Prius or Civic.
First generation Ford Escape Hybrids go dirt cheap too, but 28-30 hwy would be
the best you could hope for from them.

If you fit in a 2nd Generation Cruze, I'll sell you a bright red 2016 with
12,000 miles on it for $10k. You can give it to the daughter unit when you're
done with it. 40+mpg possible at 75mph. Can be readily tuned to 210hp and
270ft-lb. (153/177 stock)

For a daily driver, get a 1998-2003.
For a project/toy, figure out how to make the front axle go through a
OM603/OM606 oil pan and have fun converting it to diesel.

Have you driven a Passat? The TDI version should be good for high 40s mpg at
those speeds while being quick and fun to drive.
