That's it in a nutshell. I am not a big fan of the 4.. Don't like the 3
speed AT and the early corrugated MB Tex that seems downright coarse and
pedestrian. The W109 300SE L 3.5 from 1971 with leather and burlwood is
basically the same car but with air suspension, a luxurious interior and 4
speed trans. Makes all the difference in the world.

2017-11-11 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
We has some of that here, too.

It's a combination of the dry weather and lack of cold nights. Don't know what
your weather has been like temp wise, but it has been unusually warm unusually
late this here in S. Indiana.

Color change in the leave is triggered by cool or cold nights and shorter days,
and requires enough moisture that the leaves don't die early.

Fall color has been bad this year in the NE for the same reason, cold weather
didn't trigger the slow senescence of the leaves typical of fall there.

This is some info using a more practical standard:

https://www.statisticbrain.com/driver-fatality-stats-by-auto-make/

It still makes the ML look very good by comparison to some other vehicles. The
"E" class is in the same ballpark.

They beat the worst cars by a factor of about 10!

That's a better feature IMO than good fuel economy.

[MBZ] OT: Grub (Grand Unified Bootloader) Questions

2017-11-11 Thread Craig via Mercedes
Having cleared out space on my Windows laptop for a Linux installation, I
finally installed CentOS 7 yesterday.

In the past (on earlier versions), the install program would notice the
Windows partition and ask if I wanted to be able to boot that, too. So I
would end up with Grub showing both booting options.

This time, however, I was not presented the option so I can no longer
boot Windows even though it is still there.

I thought this was no problem, thinking I could just add the correct code
to /boot/grub/grub.conf (I have that specific code saved on my system so
I could reference it).

Well, I logged in and looked in /boot/grub and found that grub.conf was
now named grub.cfg and that it was automatically generated from files
in /etc/grub.d! It is now MUCH more complicated than it used to be!

I tried inserting the code in what I thought was the right place, ran the
command to generate /boot/grub/grub.cfg, rebooted, and found that I did
not have the additional boot choice.

Does anyone know what is going on?

Thanks,

Craig

That I know. The issue is the leaves never_changed_color. Peak autumn color

Others can answer that question, too ... :-)

Normally temperatures gradually decrease and the tree has opportunity to
shut down supplying nutrients to the leaves so they die and lose their
chlorophyll, which reveals the color of the leaf without the chlorophyll.

If it gets cold quickly, the tree will drop the leaves quickly before
they have a chance to lose their chlorophyll. A strong wind helps in the
process of getting the leaves off the trees.

Yes. I was talking to the fellow about the car and was driving north on
NM 41 about 20 - 25 miles north of Moriarty when the fellow called and
said some guy had given him the cash for the car.

So, I turned around and came home.

The DLinks will capture video as well, it’s all a matter of what you choose.
You just set them up to send it to am email address and you’re good. You’ve got
to have a means of storing or sending the captured stills/video to another
place, as the cameras themselves don’t typically have that ability. There are
some that you can put a mini SD card in, but then you have to remove it to see
the contents, I believe. There may be a way of viewing it through the vendor’s
software, however.

Be aware that every camera vendor has their own software. Most of them are
pretty awful.

I see the gang of raccoons that roam the neighborhood on a regular basis. I’ll
send some examples of night and day shots to you tomorrow. I dump everything
every morning after I review it.

Re: [MBZ] OT: security cameras

2017-11-11 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I set up a bunch of cheap DLink indoor cameras outside under my eaves. They’re
hardwired using Ethernet, but they have wifi capability. For security purposes
I wanted them hardwired.

Despite not being rated for outdoor use, they have worked for over four years
now in the oppressive Florida heat and humidity, as well as through hurricanes.
They have IR capabilities as well, so I can see stuff moving around at night
on the property.

They are set up to send an email of the still pictures of any movement, three
frames before and three frames after. I have a GMail account I set up for
relaying the pictures to me so they don’t clog up my personal email
address/account.

I think they cost me about $40/each.

Understand that even with the best IR illumination the resolution you’ll get at
night is pretty lousy. It’s good enough that you an identify things, but you
would be hard pressed to get details, like facial details or something like
that.

They did mine this way because I went through eBay, but it’s the same
