I always thought the chem lab benches in my (late 50s, early 60s) HS were
soapstone, and I spent a LOT of time there. Am I mistaken?

I do also recall "No zinc in the sink!"

We ran with porcelain countertops in the kitchen. Hard on dishes but you can
put a hot frying pan directly down on it. Installing tomorrow. Will see how we
get by.

I wanted to use phenolic laminate, but got voted down. Like the high school
chemistry lab tables. Comes in all sorts of colors, easy to clean, very strong.

We had a new shower built/installed last year - a local company makes them from
the same stuff that Corian is made from, though he custom mixes his own colors.
It's pricy, but gorgeous (and the wife is now happy!).

I can't say enough about the value of dry-fire practice when it comes
to training trigger control.
I have also found "laser bullets", like by LaserLyte to be helpful.
They go in the chamber like a snap cap but don't extract when you
cycle the slide. The laser fires when the firing pin hits it. Don't
bother with their fancy electronic targets; just the laser will show
your hits and also if you are steady (smears if gun is moving). Here
is one such:

https://www.amazon.com/LaserLyte-LT-9-Laser-Trainer-9MM/dp/B004NKY23E/
Unfortunately they don't come in .22LR (too small for the battery).
The best part is you can dry-fire practice anywhere and the only thing
you are missing is recoil and noise.

2017-11-20 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Yesterday I had some car time, so The White Whale got a new thermostat and
new coolant, and I also replaced the lower radiator hose with the much
nicer hose from Wilton's 300D (now both upper and lower radiator hose are
donors).

OM603 thermostat is a pain! It is located on passenger side of the engine,
above the alternator and below the turbo-charger / exhaust manifold. I
wanted to flush the block and heater core, so I installed a forced-open
thermostat first, which probably took me about an hour to figure out how to
get that installed. Due to the "forced open" feature of that T-stat,
combined with the old shrunken rubber seal, it would not stay seated in
either the T-stat housing cover (external piece) nor the block, so I was
working from above and below and going back and forth to figure out just
the right combination of bottom bolt and top bolt tightness so that I could
still fit a screw-driver into the crack to maneuver the T-stat around to
line up the orientation indent. Once that was done, the new T-stat was so
much easier to install, it had a nice big fresh rubber seal that held it in
place in the housing cover.

If I have time, I may change the engine oil and filter today, but more
likely that will be tomorrow.

Thursday night the car got washed for the first time in over a year (it
really IS white!) and then Saturday I had time to wax it. Looking much
much better now.

Amazon continues to spar with Wall World on M1 0W-40. They’re matching prices
now - I just bought two 5 quart jugs form Amazon on Saturday and it was the
exact same price from Wally World (but not delivered to my doorstep the same
day.)

They seem to vacillate back and forth between $22 something and $25 something.
Still a good deal, even better when I don’t have to go pick it up.

$5 and $20 Speedperks coupons work with the stuff the normal coupons don't work

You don't know dirty. We have had snow and salt and temps around
freezing. My truck is so dirty it is a disgrace but I am not sure it is
worth running it through the carwash as it would likely be dirty again
before I got home.
Maybe take of the first layer of dirt?
Maybe just wait until I need to fill the tank etc?

Re: [MBZ] 20 piece gearwrench set $50

2017-11-20 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes

The plot thickens.
Advance Auto Parts sells 8920A for $100 regularly:
https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/gear-wrench-20-piece-ratchet-wrench-set-8920a/10703429-P

https://www.amazon.com/GearWrench-20-Piece-Ratcheting-Wrench-8920A/dp/B015HZ2G40

Home Depot and Menards sell part number 35720 for $40-50 regularly:
https://www.homedepot.com/p/GearWrench-SAE-Metric-Ratcheting-Wrench-Set-20-Piece-35720/302569303

https://www.amazon.com/Gearwrench-20-Piece-Ratcheting-Wrench-Metric/dp/B00AA7Y8QU

So, is there a quality difference between the two seemingly identical sets?
35720 is made in China, I'm not sure about 8920A.
I think I'll go to AAP and look at the set there.
Unfortunately, going to Home Depot and paying $7.49 for a 7mm makes a 21pc set
20% more expensive than a 20pc set. All the Chebby bumper trim screws are 7mm,
along with all the Saab and a lot of Mercedes hose clamps(but I'm more likely
to use a power nutdriver than a combo wrench for all that stuff).

It appears that Gearwrench doesn't even make a 9/32" ratcheting combination
wrench. Which seems odd because the sets include an 11/32", and I think I've
only used an 11/32" once in my life and I use 9/32 fairly often. (but it's
possible I've never encountered a 9/32" hex head and every time I've used a
9/32 wrench it actually a 7mm bolt)
Mitch.

My brother fixed his 300E with similar damage by getting an inner fender at the
junk yard and welding it in rather than attempting to straighten out the old
one. I think he had more severe damage, with a lot of the metal folded up.

It's a thought -- a lot of work, but you don't have to fiddle forever to get
everything lined back up.

Interesting concept with the laser bullet. I’m satisfied with the results I’ve
