"What I've read is that the clutched pulleys can fail
catastrophically," That is what bothers me. The existing system may
rattle when the shock or the bearing are failing, but you never get
stranded. My daughter is commuting about 400 miles a week in a 30 yr
old car with 300K miles. Right now, I don't worry about it. I service
the car for part of the year, and she has 2-3 other resources when
needed. This spring I put a used tensioner bearing on it, and it is
good again. Maybe some year I will get a number for the replacement
bearing and replace one or two, so I don't have to buy the assembly.

What I've read is that the clutched pulleys can fail catastrophically,
so the belt comes off and no water pump etc. However, they do fail
gracefully and give some warning.

in several hundred thousand miles with OM603, I've never had a tensioner
die. The shock goes bad and it gets rattly. On 2 of 6 engines, I have
replaced the tensioner bearing. I think i have replaced 2 or 3
shocks. It is a minor service item. These cars were 300k to over 400k,
except the FL POS. That is pretty good service, as designed.

the bearing gets loose about 300 to 350k.

I'm thinking somewhere between $500 and $1000.
You might want to try the connector before the conductor plate. It's cheap and
can be replaced from outside the transmission.

[MBZ] E320 winter beater?

2017-12-06 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
So the Frankenheap is, I think, terminally rusty. I had bought a floor pan
and rail for one side, and when I pulled the seat to have a look at what it
would take to install I was completely disheartened. The pan doesn't
include any of the bracing and reinforcements, which are all shot too.
Looks like a too-big project, for too little return. An engine transplant
into the other body is a lot of work, and it's rusty too and would need
repairs first. I'm tired just thinking about it. So... this is available
locally:

2001 Mercedes e320 4matic in nice condition but...it has transmission
issues...the car does go in gear and drives but sometimes it won't go in
gear...goes in limp mode, it does need transmission service done for sure
and probably needs conductor plate...

$1000 asking, 240kmi, purple paint. Pictures look OK, for whatever that's
worth.

Thoughts?

If you're always within an hour of home, having the charge failure light come
on shouldn't strand you. You just turn off the HVAC fan and head for home.

No, the belt does not turn backwards, it only slows down. An upgraded
alternator with a higher moment of inertia, which doesn't want to slow
down, can continue rotating at the same speed until the engine (and thus
the serpentine belt) can catch up.

Yes, but I would word it as,

As the pulses that are induced into the accessory drives from the crank
pulley (as the crank slows down and speeds up with the piston movement)
occur, the pulley essentially allows them to happen by letting the
alternator (or maybe power steering pump, whatever) freewheel when the
crank slows down.

I think your opinion of the clutch is pessimistic. Failure mode for those is
probably about the same as the alternator. In fact when I replaced the
alternator on my Jetta it appeared that the alternator was original, I love the
clutch to the new one. Sprag clutches are pretty simple and robust.

Here’s the deal for W123s and other similar vintage MBs:

Stamped steel wheel + aluminum wheel cover

Forged aluminum wheel (same design as the steel wheel) + aluminum wheel cover

Bundt alloy wheel

The forged aluminum wheels were pretty rare in the US, but more common in
Europe, I believe. In some cases the aluminum wheels could be larger as far as
width to accommodate a larger profile tire.

So help me understand the concept:

As I understand it, the clutched pulley has a one-way sprag clutch in it so
that if the belt turns backwards it can freewheel? As the pulses that are
induced into the accessory drives from the crank pulley (as the crank slows
down and speeds up with the piston movement) occur, the pulley essentially
dampens them by letting the pulley freewheel when the crank slows down.

Is this right?

May take years. Don't forget the tensioner pulley / lever assembly that wears
out along with the little shock.

I've had a dual circuit steering / ASD pump fail with a broken mount, Larry
recently had the same failure with a normal power steering pump. This change
may also reduce the frequency of that brake.

It's a trade off.

Michael actually asked for hubcaps for _aluminum_ wheels.  The
only aluminum wheels I'm familiar with are commonly called
"bunts".  I'm also not aware of any hubcaps for those.

Is there a different aluminum wheel?

Or did Michael really mean "steel"?

Late 240Ds had aluminum alloy wheels that also used caps. They were noticably
lighter than the steelies...

What kind of champagne would one drink from the caps?  Are the krauts
and frogs on speaking terms around the fizzy wine aspect yet?

And started throwing their trash in the creeks, which are now streets
except when there is a king tide (again this morning half the city was
flooded) or hurricanes or thunderstorms, at which times they revert back
to creeks.

DB put aluminum stamped rims on their diesels to reduce unsprung weight.
They look like the stamped steel rims but are lighter weight.
