Even if they did, the water has to go in first.  You _never_ add water to
acid, not unless you _like_ steam-driven acid droplets everywhere.  So, if
they left anything out, it would have been the acid!

Batteries don't get acid and water added separately.  They dilute the acid
to strength, then add the result to the cells.  Could have been a short
pour...

Except for the "dry type" batteries like the Prius uses, I've never had a 
battery that covers couldn't be pried off of that exposed the cells and allowed 
the use of a hydrometer and the addition of water; and I've never had one that 
the covers couldn't be pushed or tapped back on. 
I can understand why stores don't want their clerks dealing with sulfuric acid 
solution, and would rather replace batteries than open them, but for DIYers, I 
think a hydrometer could save a lot of time and trouble.
The last battery I bought had no visible electrolyte in one cell when I checked 
it after driving home. I took it back and told the manager. 
He refused to even look at the cell and said if the battery goes bad, he'll 
replace it. 
I guessed that the factory had put in the acid but not the water since the 
battery likely wouldn't have started the car if they had added the water but 
not the acid, so I went home and filled the cell with distilled water. It's 
been a few years and the battery is still working well.

is all the ignition components that used to require regular maint now 
last 100K instead of 10 or 15K.  Also had the 4 axles replaced.


One thing - the Battery light was on in the speedo - he said there are 
2 batteries - one for the optional equip and another for the engine.  
The light is on because he replaced the battery for the optional 
equipment and the dealer needs to reset the "replace battery " light 
so it updates the battery to the optional equip. I visualize it's like 
when the battery is disconnected for a while and the radio must be 
reset.  Anyway, he's going to take care of it as well.


Hopefully by Monday afternoon my wife will have a newer car to go places.

Thanks for all the help guys  -  I hope to be walking without a walker 
(at least I'm 100% out of the wheelchair)  and driving a diesel MB 
again one day soon.

I always added Marvel Mystery Oil to my 91 300D at every fill up.  I ran 
a Oil Analysis report on it at around 250K mi and the numbers looked 
like most new car reports I have seen.  I also see a 10% improvement in 
MPGs when I used the MMO.  I'll bet that helped the lubricity as well...


We'll see if it does anything for the gas engine...

The VW common rail diesels are plauged by high pressure fuel pump 
problems caused by poor lubrication in the fuel. I'd guess that to be 
a much more likely cause.In typical fashion US regulators ignore the 
engine makers in favor of what big oil wants...

I'm guessing either the starter or battery is bad, but I've had cables 
corroded under the jacket by the terminal.  Invisible and hard to figure 
out.  I cut the jacket, saw the corrosion,  cut off the terminal and a 
couple inches of the cable, bolted on a new terminal, problem solves, 
but not OE.

"Bought in 2014. Needed a tranny. Replaced tranny in 2015 with several other 
items. Several modules and the cooling fan also. Cats were done at same time. I 
believe it has 134k. A/c works. New battery. The previous owner had done some 
ghetto stuff to it like camo wrapped some interior pieces . Removed most of it. 
New tires and brakes. 

Needs:
Intake tube has a split part. Duct taped for now so no critters get in. 2 
Windows hav3 broke cables. I have the new tracks somewhere. Bumpers are 
cracked. Front not too bad. But the back is f...ked. has hitch. And wires to 
tow. Low coolant level indicator is the only MIL. I need this gone . I have 
family coming this week and then I am going to Europe for 2 weeks. Wife says 
get it gone. $1500 obo. Can be driven away or delivered to you.”

Sounds thrashed. $1000?

It has solved so many problems for me, I wouldn't be without it.
The plastic type are okay when they are new, but I still prefer the all glass 
and rubber models such as this $11 model:

I just picked up a headgasket set (bolts, gaskets, etc.) for little cash, but 
they are for an m103.  I thought the w140 300SE had that engine, but turns out

actually working for Jaguar Land Rover as an engineer (shocking, I know)...
we have a huge line of diesels in the US!  Its pretty cool.

I always really liked MB's recent diesels.  I've spent lots of time driving
a W221 S350 and thought it was really outstanding.  I also liked the W212
E250 quite a bit... I may even consider one as a personal car at some point
in the future.  My wife's S212 E350 4matic (gas) has been trouble free and
very nice to drive.

Problem solved. At least I fixed 1 car today. I ohmed the glow plugs and found 
1 dead one. Replaced it with one I had laying around and BAM, it fired right 
up. I guess 1 dead plug makes a big difference in a little 240d

turn on the headlights, then watch the light as you crank it.  
(Voltmeter of sorts)  If the lights go out when the starter cranks, bad 
battery or short in  starter.  Generally bad battery.


If the lights only dim, look at terminals, cables and starter.

   Put your wife to work.  Hook up the tow cable and tow it to start it.  
I've done it a few times before with my 300D.  Put in neutral, get to over 
35mph and put in 2nd.  When it starts, put in neutral again and rev the pedal 
to blow out the excess fuel in the cylinders from your cranking to try and 
start it.  If it starts and runs ok and once warm, restarts easily again, it 
will pretty much indicate what is wrong.  If it's still slow cranking, then 
mostly likely the starter is tired.

Yes, that's true. Our 2007 Peterbilt with the Caterpillar C-13 has common
rail injection with electronic injectors with those kinds of pressures.

I just checked it again and it’s over the top mark but not that much over. I 
cranked it again and paid more attention. It never does start out cranking as 
fast as it should. It starts turning over faster when it’s trying to fire for a 
couple of seconds then slows down further. It’s just like a low batter except 
the battery tests fine and has a full charge. Even has the charger on it in 
maintain mode.

[MBZ] 240D Starter

I think I may have a starter issue on this 240D I have been messing 
with.  So when I got it bled I got it started.  I then adjusted the 
valves and since then the temp has dropped.  Since then I have not been 
able to get it started again.  What its doing is it cranks fine for a 
couple of seconds and acts like it wants to start then it quickly starts 
slowing down too slow to fire it off like the battery is dropping too 
quickly.  Battery appears to be fairly new and is out of my 95.  I load 
tested it and it tested fine.  I just wonder if they either have some 
super thick oil in it, or if the starter is getting weak or something.  
Its cooler but not too cold as to where is should have problems 
starting, its been in the 40's and 50's when I have tried to start it.

    I am now committed to the 06 E350 AWD.  It appears to be maxed out 
with options - lumbar adj, heated seats, c changer in trunk, Harmon 
Karden Stereo, etc. And everything works!  I found an owners manual on 
the MB website (over 500 pages!) and as luck will have it, I found in my 
"Library" of MB lit picked up over the years at the dealer - a large 
format sales brochure for the 2006 E Class.  I also have an 06 S Class 
brochure i asked for in a moment of lusting for extreme luxury ;-)


    All very interesting stuff as I like to gather as much research 
material on my cars as possible.  I plan to pick the car up Monday - the 
owners is going to have the car detailed today and also get a fresh Va 
State Inspection.   The owner had a recent tuneup and has he receipt 
which i will get.  I guess the thing a gasser has going for it is all 
the ignition components that used to require regular maint now last 100K 
instead of 10 or 15K.  Also had the 4 axles replaced.


One thing - the Battery light was on in the speedo - he said there are 2 
batteries - one for the optional equip and another for the engine.  The 
light is on because he replaced the battery for the optional equipment 
and the dealer needs to reset the "replace battery " light so it updates 
the battery to the optional equip. I visualize it's like when the 
battery is disconnected for a while and the radio must be reset.  
Anyway, he's going to take care of it as well.


Hopefully by Monday afternoon my wife will have a newer car to go places.

Thanks for all the help guys  -  I hope to be walking without a walker 
(at least I'm 100% out of the wheelchair)  and driving a diesel MB again 
one day soon.

A few stations that I go to have B5 or B20, but you have to look carefully
for the little sticker.  There is not always a higher price for the B5 or
B20, and they have weasel language about "may contain up to" whatever
percentage biodiesel, so one cannot always be sure what is being pumped.

I suspect that between the VW fines and imprisonment of the German national
who works for VW and got caught inside the US, and the tremendous cost in
terms of lost sales, and the continuing drumbeat of the enviro-nazis that
diesel is bad because the exhaust causes cancer and so some cities /
countries are rolling back their incentives for diesel or worse outright
banning diesel vehicles, and looming regulations making it even harder for
diesel cars to meet emissions, that is probably weighing much more heavily
than warranty claims and bad customer responses.

What a wonderful vicarious pleasure reading those letters. Also, an
intriguing history lesson. When I was growing up in New York City at that
time, I used to be able to identify all the cars from a distance just from
their hood ornaments. I don't recall ever seeing a Mercedes and all those

Sorry if I indicated bioD was the problem. The issue is crappy fuel standards 
the government implemented. ULSD isn't by itself the problem, Europe has it too 
they just compensate with better additives directly in the fuel. Here the 
government took the side of the oil companies instead of the engine makers so 
we have fuel that barely lubricates well enough and with any contamination at 
all doesn't meet spec. This is why VW won't warranty a diesel engine that's had 
any gasoline at all in the tank...

Well, use of B5 or higher is NOT the cause of pump failure due to lack 
of lubricity in U-LSD.  B5 INCREASES the lubricity to near that of older 
(Pre U-LSD) fuel.


We get a pretty steady diet of B5.

If your U-LSD is not a B5, then the Iron head and OM601-2-3 engines need 
lubricity added to the fuel for optimum engine life.


U-LSD is what happens when the EPA goobers are on LSD.  (All the time!) 
  (Maybe the usage of hallucinogens at the EPA has decreased some in 2017)

The VW common rail diesels are plauged by high pressure fuel pump 
problems caused by poor lubrication in the fuel. I'd guess that to be 
a much more likely cause.In typical fashion US regulators ignore the 
engine makers in favor of what big oil wants...
