The Bosch starters last longer and run better than any of others
I've tried. From my reading, I'm not the only one with that experience.

It is so easy to check if the block heater works. Plug it in
overnight. In the morning lift the nood and stick you bare hand on the
head or block. If it is warmer than ambient, ut is working. If you
feel metal the same temp as the fender, replace the cord and try again.

Re: [MBZ] 13 degree failed diesel starts

2017-12-31 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Trucks have APUs. My guess is either they plug in the the truck and
that also powers the fuel heater(s) as well as the block heater; or the
heaters run off battery power and the APU starts up every so often to
recharge the batteries. Dunno, I've never been that close to them. The
other thing is most of the trucks under 3 yrs old are kept on the road
nearly all the time. If it is a single driver, then the APU runs while
the driver sleeps, and it or the batteries keep the fuel warm.

Curt Raymond
December 31, 2017 at 5:05 PM
How does that work when they shut down? Have to run the heater awhile
before it will start?
Back when I first got out of high school I did some work on the
railroad, they were running bunker fuel and it was a big deal to get
one started if it got shut down in winter...

Yes, the manual for at least one of my previous MBs did say up to 30%
gasoline. I always added Power Service when I filled when it was going to
be cold and never had a problem with gelled fuel, even down to -5° F. The
main problem I had back then was straight dino oil and old batteries. Once
I switched to Mobil1, I never again had a problem starting in the cold,
even without a block heater (at work after sitting in an open lot for 9+
hours at or below 0° F

Extender that gets the plug out of the combustion chamber, away from oil
sources? Also makes plug run a lot hotter, and lowers compression some. I
tried one on the fouling 450SL. Mostly just reduced wear on head threads
as plug came out for cleaning a _lot_.

Re: [MBZ] online forums

2017-12-31 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
It depends. I don’t frequent BW as much as I used to, since I really don’t
have a need. However, back in the day with cars like the W140s it was
indispensable for troubleshooting and fault diagnosis.

Most of the subforums have FAQs and other very informative posts “stickied” at
the top of the forum as references for common issues or repairs, which makes it
really nice when you wade into a model you’re not familiar with.

To just hang around and comment? Nope. I have the W210, W124 and R129 forums
bookmarked in my browser, but the only one I ever look at is the W210 forum,
and that’s just to see if there’s anything being posed that might be relevant.

Sheboygan? Could be German or Dutch. That identifies about 95% of the

well, Belgian.

Re: [MBZ] online forums

2017-12-31 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I pretty much stick to BenzWorld. I’ve found that if you’re looking for
model-specific information it’s the best place, in my opinion. I suspect
that’s where you’re reading up on the oil cooler replacement - I bet someone
has done a DIY on it and posted the information.

I’ve also found that there are a number of people on BenzWorld who are subject
matter experts who have been enormous help in diagnosing and repairing certain
subsystems, like transmissions.

PeachParts seems a lot less organized and generalized as far as models and
vehicle types. They seem to lump a lot of stuff together, which makes it
difficult to find specific information, even with searches.

I subscribe to the “For Sale” sections for parts and cars on both just to see
what’s being sold in case there’s something that catches my eye.

[MBZ] 13 degree failed diesel starts

2017-12-31 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
So it is currently 13 outside and i decided I wanted to see if a few
cars would start.  I did not mess with starting the 606 vehicles as I
know they will start.  So first up was the 83 240D I have been working
on that I picked up non running.  It has had all new filters, oil
change, valves adjusted, 1 bad glow plug replaced. I has been starting
as soon as glow plug light goes out when its been down to about 25-30
with no problem.  Today I tried to start it with the same condition
cranking after light went out, it would not start.  I then glowed it
till the relay clicked off, then cycled key again and started cranking,
and cranked it for as long as the battery had left and it was a no go.
If I had not tried the first attempt it may have lit off.  This car is
in the shop but there is no heat out there so it would have been about
outside temp.  It sits on the charger in maintain mode so I will
probably go try it again tomorrow with the proper 616 cold start
procedure as demonstrated by Jaime.

Up next with the 87 SDL.  I glowed it until the light went off then
waited for about 30 more seconds past that, then started cranking.  I
figured this was overkill with the 603.  So it acted like it might be
going to start, a couple of cylinders would hit a few times but
eventually the battery ran out and she was done.  I was a little
disappointed with that one but I think the battery is a little weak.  I
went to drive it a few days ago and it was nowhere near as cold as it is
today.  It started right up after the first glow an ran for a couple of
seconds before dying like it always seems to when its really cold.  When
I went to start it for the 2nd time the battery was too weak so I put it
on the charger. A newer battery and it would have probably started.

Last up was the 92 rod bender.  I was sure this one would fire right up
and sure enough it did.  I just glowed it and as son as the light went
out I cranked it and it fired right up with no problem, ran smooth right
off the bad.  Of course this car has the afterglow feature.  I ran it
for a couple of minutes then shut it down.

The SDL is charging again and if I have to go anywhere today I want to
drive it, so maybe it will start later.

And now you have several grades of M1, ranging from $20 a jug to $40 a jug...
But Castrol really had it made 25 years ago, with Syntec (blended/hydrocracked)
selling in most stores for a dollar a quart more than Mobil One, when Mobil One
was still fully synthetic.

[MBZ] online forums

2017-12-31 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
I generally do not like the online forums all that much, I much
preferred email lists but I guess I am old fashioned.  Anyway, I do
check out Benzworld and Peachparts every now and then.  Since it was so
cold yesterday, and today, and tomorrow, I have been bored and have been
reading them a bit.  On Peachparts yesterday I saw in the sale section
what appeared to be a really nice 87 TD that a guy was selling.  It had
it down to $1k and still nobody wanted it.  I think he ended up selling
it to be used as a rally car.  Sad.  I guess there is not value in 124's
and/or 603 powered vehicles anymore?  I am currently reading a huge
thread about 642 oil cooler replacement as I need to get this done on
mine.  So anyway, which of the online forums do you guys read and like
the most?

Re: [MBZ] TOO MUCH RED

2017-12-31 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes

The criticism of the english car is not remarkable to anyone who tried
to drive one.

As for the batman, he was too much like the prince of darkness, Lucas.

Batman and superman were passe when I was a kid.remnants of the 30s, 40s
and 50s. FIreball XL5, yogi bear, and the Warner Brothers cartoons,
along with the jetsons and a few other H-B offerings were what I watched
on Sat during the winter. If I could stay up late enough, i tried to
watch 12 o'clock High. It came on at 10:30. All Black and white. I
got my first color TV in 1981. Never had cable until 1991-1993. and
again a while 1995-1998.

We saw the first and maybe the second Bond movie. The one I remember
had him driving a (Triumph?) around that had some sort of auger that
came out and ruptured an evildoers tire. He complained about the many
mechanical problems the car had which seemed strange in a movie.

Does anyone read the current daily newspaper comics? A couple of
strips about kids takes me back since they are so typical of some of
the grade school kids of 80 years ago when I went to grade school.
Batman and Superman were the movie heros of that era, as well as a
number of actors in the many Western movies. A kid could go to movies
for a dime on Saturday matinee; 15 cents any other time.

Could be a mixture. Lots of territory went back and forth.
(Danzig/Gdansk for example)

I always thought he was auf Deutsch until I was around Polish some.

Sounded German. "A little Dutch (Deutch?) girl in Sheboygan...", etc.
