I have no shortage of projects to do. Then there are places to go. And
there are always things to do.

Under the things to do category: Went yesterday with SWMBO and had Irsh
coffee and Fish and chips. It was excellent and took over 2 hours. And
I am not old enough to drink coffee!

He took a Custodian of Quarters position for the Met. and worked for

2018-01-20 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
cut the nut off with a grinder for flame wrench. BTDT, don't remember
how I got er done. Most of the time i tighten it down, unless there is
enough room under the nut to get channelllock on or a vice grip.

Mitch Haley via Mercedes
January 20, 2018 at 5:28 PM
Ever have a ball joint separate from the taper while you're trying to
loosen the nut?
All 3 on my W163 did that. Track link I finished taking the nut off by
using a jack to shove the taper together. That wasn't so bad. Upper
ball joint nut jammed solid when there was only about one thread left
exposed above it. Had to cut the nut off. My fault for forcing it when
it started getting hard to turn.

The lower ball joint started spinning as soon as I started turning the
nut.
I can torque it back down with the air wrench, loosen it a half turn
or so and then it starts spinning the stud again. Figured I could rock
it back and forth, since the nut was moving a little. 20
tighten/loosen cycles later and no change, I gave up on that idea.

Any idea how to get this thing apart, aside from grinding the flange
off the nut so I can get my nut splitter on it? I'm about ready to
give up for now, shoot it with Kroil every weekend until April, and
deal with it then.

The best way is to put in a blocked-open thermostat, otherwise you do

Re: [MBZ] Could be nice but engine seems dirty for a supposed new engine

2018-01-20 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
Depends on what they mean by engine was replaced. Was it a new engine or
from a wrecked car? I replaced the engine in a W115 300D with a factory new
long block. I was surprised at how bare that engine was - block, head,
water pump, injection pump and injectors might have been all.

The parents of a woman I work with retired in their early 50s. They planned
carefully and saved, so they were able to bail when they were like 53. Neither
parent has anything significant they do with their time. When asked what the
best part of retirement is, dad says, “Not having to get up and go to work in
the morning….”

You need to have citric acid on hand - for cleaning auto cooling systems,
removing mineral deposits from the dishwasher, coffee pot, tea kettle, etc.
(I'm guessing that your water is rather hard like ours is).

[MBZ] W163 and ball joints

2018-01-20 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
Ever have a ball joint separate from the taper while you're trying to loosen
the nut?
All 3 on my W163 did that. Track link I finished taking the nut off by using a
jack to shove the taper together. That wasn't so bad. Upper ball joint nut
jammed solid when there was only about one thread left exposed above it. Had to
cut the nut off. My fault for forcing it when it started getting hard to turn.

The lower ball joint started spinning as soon as I started turning the nut.
I can torque it back down with the air wrench, loosen it a half turn or so and
then it starts spinning the stud again. Figured I could rock it back and forth,
since the nut was moving a little. 20 tighten/loosen cycles later and no
change, I gave up on that idea.

Any idea how to get this thing apart, aside from grinding the flange off the
nut so I can get my nut splitter on it? I'm about ready to give up for now,
shoot it with Kroil every weekend until April, and deal with it then.

[MBZ] 124 accelerator cable

2018-01-20 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
I have never messed with the accelerator cable on a 124.  I need to
replace the one on the 95 E300.  New ones are $50-60.  Is it worth
messing with pulling a used one off another car or should I go new?  I
have never had to replace one so I was not sure if these broke
frequently.  Mine is stripped out on the adjuster end at the engine linkage.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Was Andrew needs a dually truck - Now Retirement

2018-01-20 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
My dad retired at 72. Immediately started working on a handicap accessibility
project for the Rod & Gun club. They got a grant from the state. Got that done
and immediately they got a federal grant for an indoor airgun range which he's
been working on for I think 2 years. He says this is the last one, if he'd
billed them for his work it'd be more than the building would cost. The amount
of hoops they've had to jump through is astounding...
My mother on the other hand sits home and knits socks. I'm a little worried
about her.

Well I just finished it up and pulled it back in the shop. Looking down in the
radiator cap opening the top fins of the radiator look sparkling clean. I will
say when I flushed it again after running the prestone in it a lot more junk
came out, then on the next flush it was pretty clear. I would say this stuff
seems to work ok.

I am simply amazed at how dead simple these cars are.

Re: [MBZ] 240d cooling system flush

2018-01-20 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
I spoke too soon. After flushing it the 2nd time while running it came out
clear. I put the prestone in it and it’s running again for another 20 minutes.
Will then flush it again and call it good.

Re: [MBZ] 240d cooling system flush

2018-01-20 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I would wait until you get clear water, or it’s just going to be crudded up
(still), just not as bad as before. I would flush it from the hose on the back
of the engine with the radiator cap off. Run water through it for 5-10
minutes, then close it up and run it and check.

My 82 300SD had a cooling system like this - it looked like orangish mud. Took
quite a while to flush it out.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Andrew needs a dually truck

2018-01-20 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
From what I saw when I was at Kohler where the average length of service was 28
years, if people didn’t have a plan for what they were going to do once they
retired they didn’t seem to last very long after they did. These were people
who were retiring with like 40, 50 and even 60 years of service in the same
company. In most cases they had lots of family and friends in the area, which
certainly helps.

When it gets closer I’m sure I’ll have some volunteer work set up on a regular
basis. That will help.

2018-01-20 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Do that and if you’re really worried about the citric acid flush, just got to
the store and buy a sh*tload of KoolAid lemonade flavored drink mix - the stuff
in the packets, not the container. It’s pretty much the same thing. I use it
for cleaning dishwashers, washing machines, anything that needs a good
degreasing/cleaning once in a while.

That being said, I have only done the citric acid thing once in my life, and
didn’t feel like it really made a difference either way. Now I just flush with
clear water., run it for a bit, flush it again and replace the coolant.

[MBZ] OT FOR WILTON

2018-01-20 Thread WILTON via Mercedes

This recent thread is evidently related to my "TWO STRANGERS" post in July,
2014, in which I related my story of two young men who lived with my
family

for several weeks in the summer of 1944. I did not realize it then, but I
now feel confident that they were very likely German POW's.

Here's a link discussing such POW's in NC
https://www.ncpedia.org/history/20th-Century/wwii-pows

Note that main camps for the POW's were Fort Bragg (south of our home in
1944), Camp Butner (NW of our home in '44) and Camp McCall (SW of our home
in '44), but several smaller camps (New Bern, Edenton, Williamston,
Wilmington, Ahoskie) were generally east of us. The farm is located 5
miles
west of Spring Hope on US highway 64, at that time a main east-west
corridor

running generally through the middle of the state the entire distance from
Manteo on the coast nearly 600 miles to the SW corner of the state. The
entire route has been significantly upgraded and/or replaced and
supplemented by multi-lane, limited access super highways, such as I-40
and

I-85, but many parts of the 1944 highway are still in use. The two men in
1944 were traveling westward from somewhere east of our farm.

Following is a re-post of the original:

TWO STRANGERS (VISITORS)

One Saturday afternoon in early summer, Carson, then nearly 18 and
driving the car, Daddy and I, then 10, were returning home after grocery
shopping in Spring Hope. We came upon two young men in their early
twenties, standing by the road trying to “hitch” a ride. We stopped for
them, and they got into the back seat with me. They were thin, dirty &
unshaven and had no luggage or baggage - no package of any sort - that I
remember. They said that they had not had a meal in several days and had
been eating green, raw corn from the fields by the road. They told us that
they were from New Jersey and just “bumming” around the country on an
“adventure.” Because tobacco harvest time was just beginning, and labor
was
in short supply, Daddy made a deal with them to stay with us for the
summer

and help with the harvest.
They had never been on a farm before, but learned quickly, seeming to
enjoy all of it, especially when I would let them “drive” the mules
pulling
the small tobacco trucks back and forth from the fields to the curing
barn.

At times, however, they wanted the mules to go too fast for our safety and
the animals’ good health. Once, when one of them was driving the mule
pulling an empty tobacco trunk along the side of the busy, paved highway,
and I was in the truck with him, he was making the mule run. Suddenly,
the
mule bolted onto the pavement in front of an approaching Trailways bus!
The
bus driver and I stared into each other’s terrified eyes as the bus
skidded

toward us and stopped close enough for me to reach out and touch the front
of it. Every day I’ve had since that day has been a bonus.
The visitors and I soon became good friends and were often “alone” -
just the three of us. Almost every time we were “alone,” one of them
would
ask me if I spoke German, sometimes pressing me with, “Are you sure you
don’t

speak German?” Of course, I, a ten-year-old farm boy in eastern North
Carolina in 1944, did not speak German. After being assured each time
that
I did not speak German, they would go into a private & lengthy
conversation

in German. Until a few years ago, I had never told anybody else in the
family about these conversations in German and their insistence that I not
be able to understand them. They never spoke German around others in the
family, and I was too young and naïve to suspect anything other than what
they had told us, but I now feel certain that the two young men were,

they had become part of our family - ate with us, slept in our house, wore
my brothers’ clothes, etc. - a relaxed & comfortable part of the family.
Though they became such a part of the family for that short time, I do not
remember their names; I vaguely remember that one was blond and the other
darker.
Years later, after I had gained some knowledge of German, and learned
that there had been German prisoner-of-war camps in eastern North Carolina
and German ships/submarines had been sunk near the coast, I realized that
these two were most likely escaped German prisoners of war or even
survivors

watching

a movie with German speakers or someone speaking English with a German
accent, when I would feel that I had heard certain sounds and accent

Its a pretty good video and his shot of contaminated fluid looks just like

pretty sure our problem is just water. I know its not coolant from the engine
since this is hydraulic oil and its not cooled by the engine. Still not sure
how the water got in there...

$27k XL is a 2wd, its dammed hard to get a 4wd under $30k.
To be fair heated seats are pretty terrific when you've been out hunting and
are frozen pretty much to the bone. Just before the end of the year I went
hunting with a big group, it was in the single digits pretty much the whole

trimmed to sell to the female market.  To be fair, pretty much all cars,
MB included are targeted at the female market.  There may be some

leather steering wheel cover, heated seats, etc, it definitely has
options that fall into the wussy category.  Each of these would be
competing with a MB/nissan pickup.

I am not picking on frod, because GM, dodge, toada and nissan all offer
products with similar fru-fru.  I am more familiar with their trim levels.

When you compare the $50k-60k wagens to the $27k ford F150 XL, can you
honestly tell me a "limited or "platinum" is worth twice as much
money?  Will they get twice as much MPG?  Will they last twice as
long?  Will they carry twice as much?  Do they have some combination of
the 3 that justifies being worth twice as much?

The gummit meddling in the vehicle market has driven people away from
cars and into peekups.  The carmakers are not stupid.  they are just
capitalizing on the weaknesses of people and what their gummit has
taxed/regulated them into.

I’m just stunned at the prices on these things, even a base model F150. It’s
crazy.

I would guess that most of the fancy trucks are sold to old men with deep
pockets. They buy a loaded pickup instead of a Cadillac or Lincoln, especially
now when they no longer make large cars. The fancy truck has become a status
symbol for them.
My previous truck was a Lariat so upscale of my current XTR. I miss some things
like the leather bucket seats and automatic climate control but the newer one
has things like the backup camera and the beeper that warn of things behind it
which the 02 did not.
I would have cheerfully had a fancier truck but it would have cost a lot more
and I did not need more bells and whistles.

The  $50,000 to $60,000 peekups with all the "luxury" trim/interior such
as the frod "platinum" "limited" "SVT Raptor" and "King Ranch"   are
what I classify as wussywagons.   They are not meant for work, but to
show off the owners wealth or to stroke the owners ego, or to satisfy
the wife while doing one of the former..  The "platinum" is definitely
trimmed to sell to the female market.  To be fair, pretty much all cars,
MB included are targeted at the female market.  There may be some
argument about the king ranch, but with a price tag over $50,000,
leather steering wheel cover, heated seats, etc, it definitely has
options that fall into the wussy category.

R129 ones as well as the little piece of plastic trim around the attachment
point of the sun visor are stupid expensive, like $50.

Could be like me - I work 6:30 am to 3:30 pm. And that’s when I’m not working
from home. Our management says we need to work from home more to save money

I figure I still have a good half a day left when I get off work.

Re: [MBZ] The latest story on the CAB

2018-01-20 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Between the top and the cylinders, not including labor, you’re talking roughly
$2000 for parts to make things right. Personally, I would walk away from this
as you’ll be upside down on it before you start. W124 cabs aren’t so unique
that they’re making the market go crazy, so unless you want another car for
Regina to destroy, I would move on. If you trade the 240D for it you’re really
off your onion.

Just my $0.02.
