Plan on buying and installing the electronic conversion for the crypsler
ACC I've avoided those things like the Plague (they are) so I have no
exerience, but I think the defrost only means that the servo is stuck.

With the A/C not working, it could be:

- the compressor,
- the condenser,
- the evaporator,
- the expansion valve,
- bad o-rings some place, or,
- bad hoses.

I think the heat going only on defrost would be related to the Chrysler
servo. What does that servo do?

Does this have the mono-valve that is hard to get diaphragms for? Would
the vacuum-operated dashpots, the fixing of which would require removing
the dash, be a cause of the heat not going elsewhere?

2018-03-03 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
I had cooper CS4 on the van, and I thought they slipped belts pretty
early, but when I checked the miles on them, they had around 50k. So
for the price I guess they were ok. I just wish I could find tars that
didn't slip belts all the time. With any tires I had msde in Yurp,
other than Michelin, I have never had slipped belts. The frog michelins
slipped belts too. My preference was always German made Continentals.
I am still curious about how the Barums hold up. Just put a pair on the
300D.

What was the Czech continental? Barum? Try those. They looked decent,
but I've not had any long enough to determine the long term viability.
I've had poor results with several brands of "high quality" asian tars.
IMHO, anything yurpeen is preferable over asian or US brands.

OK.

I called the fellow.

He said he hasn't driven it for a while, so its characteristics are not
front-most in his mind.

I asked him about the heat and A/C.
He said the A/C doesn't work.

He started the car and said that
the heat had defrost only.

He said the engine runs great,
but puts out black smoke when it's cold.

He said he never paid attention to the fuel mileage.

He said he put in a used transmission after replacing the seals.
He said it works well.

So what y'all think?

Re: [MBZ] Nice 116

2018-03-03 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
Yes, I like my 116. It's a 1980 300SD with about 425,000 miles. I did finally
have to replace the tranny and it's ok now. The main gotcha' is the Chrysler
servo. I never had one leak, but the gears break and stick. There's an
electronic replacement for it. It should have the newer glow plugs. However,
MB was playing with the 116 diesel and I found that the 78, 79, and 80 all have
slightly different glow plug relays and they are different from the 126 or
newer 123 relays. My 80 still has the original exhaust system, IP, and most
other parts, never had the head off. I replaced the leather seats and pads
about 20 years ago, otherwise only minor things. My son in law painted it
about 12-15 years ago because the clear coat was going, it's the champagne /
gold color.

This car looks pretty good, but not $5K good. The interior is nice, but you'd
need to look under the seats to see if the glue and horse hair are separating
yet. At that mileage, it should have a lot of life left. Check that the
heat/AC work and check the windows...the lifts tend to go bad, not expensive,
but a slight PITA to replace the lift or the motor.

If really interested, send me any questions. I'd be happy to help.

Best Wishes,

Roger

There were a bunch of good candidates at the show, I went in wanting a 54
caliber or larger. Theres no particular reason for that, the .45s I already
have would be adequate but go big or go home right?
Finally found this:
https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4713/39622927395_a2e72a0d88_b.jpgits a Thompson
Center Renegade, I paid $165. I don't think its been shot much, theres very
little powder staining on the stock and the bore is perfect. The Renegade is in
the half stock style popularized by the Hawken brothers in the 1820s or so and
commonly referred to with their name. TC made two similar models, the Hawken
and Renegade, the latter being more plain with iron hardware, little engraving
and no patch box.
I really like it, the stock is fat and fits me well, it points good and has
good sights. I haven't shot it yet but I also scored several hundred maxi-ball
type bullets. This gun has a 1:48 twist rate which is fast enough to stabilize
a conical bullet but will still handle a round ball reasonably well. The big
bullets should do a number on deer and it we get a chance to hunt moose again
this would be my gun of choice.

2018-03-03 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
I called Costco to see if they had Michelin tires to fit and were compatible.
He could get some in the proper size that were some other name but probably
pretty much the same. He asked what car they were for and the conversation got
into some whole other dimension about they had to go on the rear not the front
and a bunch of stuff about the speed ratings and load ratings and what not,
which I knew about from when I bought these tires a few years ago. Anyway he
would have to order them and it would take a week or two and then a bunch of
other extraneous nonsense again about bringing the car in etc. And the
Michelin deal is only for 4 tires and it expires in a day or two and these were
going to be some huge price anyway.

Maybe I should Just buy some of those cheepcheep Asian things. Or I guess I
could check around see if I could find the Michelins somewhere else. What a
PITA.

Re: [MBZ] I buy a car a probably should not have

2018-03-03 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I checked the EPC with a swagged model code and it came back with a 124 670 47
80 which is about $1,000 from the dealer.

The back glass on the coupe may be different from the sedan which means it will
be a lot more expensive and rarer.

So I went and got the 88 300ce I was talking about earlier. Paid $500 for it.
It’s fairly straight with decent paint with normal door dings all over it as
would be typical. Guy says he drove it back to St. Louis from Dallas last year
and it’s been sitting since November. I hope I didn’t screw the pooch too bad
as the back windshield is cracked. Hopefully those are not out of this world
expensive. It will also need new seat covers if it is to be concourse
condition. The leather is the normal cracks for a Texas car. That about the
worse things about it so far. I threw a battery in it and cranked it for a
while and it acted like it wanted to start. Cranked it some more and it started
firing. It eventfully lit off and with some throttle feathering I was able to
get it running and it ran just fine. So I went ahead and loaded it up on the
trailer. My main things are hoping that rear window won’t be a fortune and I
can find some seat covers or seats at a decent price. Surely these things will
start ticking up in value like other coupes have been.
