I have started the boarding process but depending on track might suspend it. We
will be in the back side so wind and rain will be somewhat diminished if it
maintains the northward track.

Storm surge looks to be maybe 4-6ft here, new moon high tide was last night so
it will not be quite as high Thursdayish. The manse sits at 9.5ft, a high tide
would be 6.5 on Thursday night, you do the math... but this far up the creek
and marsh it mitigates the rise some. Irma last year it got right up to the
edge of the garage, which is lower than the house, so I’m hoping I’ll be good.

I’ll move the cars around, they should be OK unless some trees start to fall.
One actually snapped off last night about 15ft up for some reason, maybe it was
terrified in anticipation, and hit the $500E300 and bent some metal a bit. That
thing is like a tree magnet, I guess I should be happy it draws the trees
instead of the other vehicles.

I have plenty of provisions and 30gal of gas for the genny so I should be OK if
the power goes out. And propane to cook. And ammo.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Your tax dollars at work!

2018-09-10 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
Great question! My 0.3 seconds of research yielded the following website.
http://www.fuelinggrowth.org/why-clean-fuel-matters/what-are-low-carbon-fuels/

*Low carbon what?*

Low carbon fuels, or clean fuels, are those that result in less carbon
pollution compared to petroleum-based fuels and that are produced in a
sustainable manner.

Also called next generation or advanced biofuels, they can overcome the
limitations of both fossil fuels and first generation predecessors by
utilizing existing infrastructure, reducing emissions, and careful use of
our land when coupled with proper sustainability certification.

Advanced biofuels can be considered “low carbon” or “clean fuels” by
looking at the total impact of the fuel on the environment and economy.
These fuels can provide significant environmental and social benefits if
developed with caution and foresight. The best biofuels are those that make
it environmentally and economically possible to produce more food and fuel
and do it in a way that clearly reduces global warming pollution, conserves
and enhances our soil and water resources, protects our fragile wild lands,
forests and native ecosystems, and improves the economic welfare of
farmers, workers and communities. Fortunately, there are third party tools
to help producers and buyers assess and validate the sustainability of
their biofuels. Credible certification systems such as the Roundtable on
Sustainable Biofuels (RSB) verify those products that come from supply
chains that deliver on the environmental promise of advanced biofuels and
avoid significant unintended consequences.

Some rather harsh criticism about the missing SLS. I see that in the
undercarriage photos, one of the rear brake lines is pulled rather taught
by the "new" rear suspension set up, which lends credence to Pierre's
comment that SLS Conversions is selling hack jobs.

Missing SLS pump (due to engine replacement with a sedan engine) can be
overcome, just a little engineering and inventiveness required. Personally
I'd fit a dual-circuit power steering pump, might require some machining to
get a v-belt pulley wheel mounted vice the serpentine belt pulley, but the
rest would nearly be plug-n-play. May need a dual v-belt set up?

[MBZ] OT: Your tax dollars at work!

2018-09-10 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
Research funds target fuels from human waste, other projects

John Fialka , E News reporter
Published: Monday, September 10, 2018

The Department of Energy plans to invest $80 million in early-stage
research to push the development of non-carbon-emitting fuels and products
from wastes, including municipal sewage sludge, agricultural wastes and
non-food plants.

One major goal, according to Jonathan Male, director of DOE's
biotechnologies office, is to use biofuels to eventually eliminate the need
for imported crude oil, which supplies 25 percent of the nation's daily
transportation fuels.

Another goal, Male said in an interview, is to drive down the cost of
"drop-in" biofuels to $3 per gallon of gasoline by 2022. Such fuels can be
refined and used to replace conventional gasoline, jet fuels, diesel oil
and home-heating oils.

"We'd like to give consumers more energy options," Male said.

The funds announced last week will be spread among 36 projects, many of
which build on earlier research.

One is an attempt to replace corn-based ethanol that's currently blended
into gasoline with more efficient and cheaper ethanol from specialized and
fast-growing non-food plants. Feedstocks include poplar trees, miscanthus
(a very tall grass), switch grass and a type of inedible sorghum.

The new funds will help researchers move exotic laboratory-grown plants
into outdoor farming projects where they can be made more drought-resistant
and less dependent on fertilizers, Male said.

He said that one object of research will be to put new energy crops on the
edges of food-producing fields, such as corn fields, to catch the runoff
from fertilizers and other nutrients that would otherwise contaminate
streambeds.

Some laboratories will get funds to develop specialized yeasts, algae,
bacteria and fungi that can break down carbon dioxide in wastes and help
reformulate the carbon into fuels and higher-value products such as
plastics that are currently made from petroleum. Other tools will be
specialized catalysts that can perform the same function in chemical
reactions.

DOE also wants to see if researchers can break down "wet organic wastes," a
category which includes sludge from municipal sewage treatment plants. Male
said it's a rich source of carbon.

"It currently costs us $50 a ton to collect it and drive it to a landfill,"
he noted.

Another research target is the development of high-energy, but low-cost,
diesel and jet fuels. The ideal would be low-carbon drop-in fuels that can
be used in current fleets of large trucks and airliners, major sources of
CO2 emissions.

There has been substantial progress, Male said, but making low-carbon jet
fuels has been more difficult because safety rules require fuels that won't
freeze or thicken when burned at heights of 30,000 feet.

Some low-carbon fuels could arrive commercially in a matter of months, Male
said, noting that substantial testing has been done using automobiles
burning fuels blended with ethanol made from forest wastes.

But other developments may take 10 to 15 years because new low-carbon fuels
may require expensive "biorefineries" that have to be built from scratch.

However, DOE is also funding research into using the massive catalytic
crackers in conventional oil refineries to further break down biofuel
feedstocks into higher-value products such as stronger plastics or
ingredients for animal feed.
