Re: [MBZ] OT: Pilot asleep at controls of 747

2019-02-25 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Aircrew is strictly limited to FAA ruled "duty time" for each day. FAA
mandates how much "duty time" can be done which is not just "flight time at
the controls". Every airline worldwide has to meet FAA regulations with few
exceptions in order to operate in airline flight corridors and controlled
flight altitudes.

Common practice for long haul international or over ocean flights is to fly
with two full crews. Unknown to most passengers, large airliners have crew
rest areas which are not public access, with bunks and kitchen.

As far as sleeping at the controls and falling against the "stick".
rules state if you occupy a command seat, you have to have shoulder harness
and seat belt on. Shoulder harness has auto retract and tension, so if you
fall forward, it will kick in and "arrest" you.

I contend the most dangerous part of airline travel is the drive to the
airport. Your personal view may vary.

i got cd1.  took 30-60 min  I didn't keep track  cd2 is working now.

The index won't run on a Mac, but you can open the pdfs.

You need a winders box or a VM running windoze 7 or so,  Xp will work too.

Re: [MBZ] W124 E300D Fuel Leak

2019-02-25 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Pays to replace all the fuel hoses under the hood and under the tank
when you get another car, and every 5-10 years, depending on the quality
of the hose.

Dan Penoff via Mercedes wrote on 2/25/19 6:23 PM:

Oldest son texts me this afternoon: “Car is leaking fuel bad, only when
running. I’m going to pull it in the garage and have a look.”

Hmm. He’s had a fuel leak that we haven’t been able to pinpoint for a long
time, but it’s always been pretty small. He still gets between 30-40 mpg.

So I get home, change into my grubbies, and glove up. I look all over that
thing and I can’t find anything obvious. Start the car and fuel is pouring out
from between the injection pump and engine, but we can’t see into this area
from either above or below. I notice the supply hose from the filter assembly
seems really soft and spongy. I’m thinking it’s got a crack in it, but we can
only see to the fuel heater, which on the OM6076 is in a weird place on the
head under the intake manifold runners for cylinders one and two. You can’t see
a darned thing.

I call my dealer and ask my parts gal about the availability of fuel heater.
“None in the country, nearly 300 in Germany.”

That’s a tell, a really big one. It told me that these things never get
replaced or there would be some inventory in the US parts depots. Hmm.

Off comes the crossover pipe. Can’t see any better. Off comes the intake
manifold.

The spongy hose? It had been connected to the banjo fitting on the side of the
injection pump, but was barely hanging on. It was bent into a 90 degree elbow
with no slack at the turn, and the banjo fitting was pointing down. There was a
clamp on the hose but it was run down so tight that it was bottomed out.

I broke the banjo fitting loose a bit and rotated it around so we could get at
the clamp. The hose was torn where it was bent into a 90. Great. To add to the
fun, it was clearly not diesel rated hose, and had broken down badly. I wonder
how much schmutz from the inside of the hose got into the engine…

Anyway, we got the clamp and hose off, replaced it with the proper stuff and
new clamps, put everything back together and that was it. Total time maybe 90
minutes if that. As an added bonus, we were able to take advantage of taking
things apart and get the plastic cover that Karl was so kind to sell me
installed. Nice.

The cars must communicate, as my wagon failed its water pump on Sunday. Despite
the rash of issues, the finnie ran flawlessly to and from work today. Old
Faithful, no doubt.

no room in the 124 to do the front gearshift bushing one that way.  Rear
one you can use a bolt. I use channellocks.  Started that 48 years ago
on the 110.

Floyd Thursby via Mercedes wrote on 2/25/19 10:50 AM:
I did them on the 126 using a bolt and some washers, which I think is
kinda the po-man's tool.  Someone at some point had suggested that
approach.  It worked OK but was a bit fiddly as there was not a lot of
room up in there to turn the nut/bolt to squeeze in the bushing.  But
it didn't cost $40 and I didn't have to deal with finding the special
tool either, so there's that.  I don't know how the 124 compares to
the 126 (and 123 too) so YMMV.

It does if the other pilot goes to sleep as well. I've read about two instances
of that happening to major airline pilots; one plane flew out over the Pacific,
and the other either overflew, or woke up before they overflew, their
destination on a flight from the West Coast to somewhere in Minnesota IIRC.

40mpg?  Does it have ICE COLD AIR also?  Best I have ever seen with one
of these is about 32.

Oldest son texts me this afternoon: “Car is leaking fuel bad, only when

[MBZ] SL600 blink code reading

2019-02-25 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I went out before it got too dark (twilight helped see the LED) and
hooked up my LED blinker reader to the car and pulled codes off 4 pins.
Had time to test/ get codes off pin5 LH Sequential Fuel Injection Left
Bank, pin6 ABS/ASR/ETS/ESP, pin8 Base Module, and pin11 Automatic Damper
System control module.  There are a bunch more pins too, maybe 24 total
that are used on this car (I still need to check on that). I will get to
them another time, I have to modify my wires with something that will go
into the sockets better.

Got 1 code off the LHSFI, 2 off the ABSetc., 8 codes off the Base
Module, 5 off the ADS.  Gotta dig more into what they might mean, I did
look to see what the codes are for.  I can go back and clear all of them
too, see what might come back.  A bunch of the BM codes seemed to be due
to the battery being low or disconnected, so those should clear which I
can do with the blink reader too.

I *think* I found all the codes for all the pins/blinks, and have sorta
compiled those from stuff I extracted from various sources, but I think
I will make another cheat sheet to see more easily what they all mean
and what pins are what.  One of the fancy devices would probably read
them all and say what they are directly, but for now my no-cost LED
blinker is working,  Yay me!

Fun times with an electronic car...

BTW the 38-pin connector is on these cars, certain years seem to have
different set-ups for the pins and what they have on them so you have to
look at car/year specific pins/codes.

38-Pin Diagnostic Connector

[MBZ] OT: B-52s Forever?

2019-02-25 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes
U.S. B-52 bombers are getting an upgrade that will let them drop smart
munitions like never before.

25 Feb. 2019 -- The service is testing a major upgrade for the decades-old
bombers, as well as the revolutionary conventional rotary launchers (CFLs). The
upgrade will increase the number of munitions a B-52 bomber can drop at one
time.

CFLs are rotating munition systems inside the B-52 bomb bay that enable the
heavy, long-range bombers to carry a large and varied payload of conventional
smart munitions and other guided airborne weapons.

"Before these launchers, the B-52 was not capable of carrying smart weapons
internally," explains Master Sgt. Adam Levandowski, Air Forces Strategic
(AFSTRAT) armament systems manager. "Now each CRL allows for internal carriage,
which adds an additional eight smart bombs per aircraft."

Re: [MBZ] I Picked up the “Sherman Tank” W124

2019-02-25 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
First of all, don’t give a dime to Mercedessource. If you really want the tool
you can get one for around $20 online.

There are several approaches to replacing these little buggers.

1 - As Curley or someone suggested you can do it with some washers, nuts and a
bolt. This approach is sort of fiddly, but it works and is cheap.

2 - Remove the arm from the car and do it on the bench.

3 - I’ve had some success with using a pair of channelocks, but again, this can
be somewhat frustrating and fiddly.

Before you take any approach to this job, heat up a cup of water in your
microwave and drop the bushing into it. Do NOT heat the bushing directly!!! Let
it soak for 5-10 minutes to soften, which makes it a lot easier to install.

Re: [MBZ] I Picked up the “Sherman Tank” W124

2019-02-25 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I did them on the 126 using a bolt and some washers, which I think is
kinda the po-man's tool.  Someone at some point had suggested that
approach.  It worked OK but was a bit fiddly as there was not a lot of
room up in there to turn the nut/bolt to squeeze in the bushing.  But it
didn't cost $40 and I didn't have to deal with finding the special tool
either, so there's that.  I don't know how the 124 compares to the 126
(and 123 too) so YMMV.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Pilot asleep at controls of 747

2019-02-25 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
Sydney to LA on the a380 qantas run two complete flight crews. One handles
takeoff and landing. The other handles the middle bit. Crew 1 sleeps in the
middle.

For takeoff and landing there is always an extra officer on the flight deck
whose job is only to watch the other three and pick up any errors or
irregularities. A friend is a pilot with them.

[MBZ] 124 driveshaft carrier bearing 6006-2RS

2019-02-25 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes

Please delete the prior email.  I wrote the wrong bearing number.

I ordered a FAG.  It is a 6006-2RS.   When you have the bearing number,
you can pick one up locally at a bearing or industrial supply house. (or
fleabay) generally faster and cheaper than going through parts channels.

You may want to note the bearing number if you have a 124.  May be the
same for 107-126/210 etc.

Re: [MBZ] W124 backup light switch

2019-02-25 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Thanks Kaleb, Peter and Fred.   If I understand correctly, you put the
gearshift in neutral with the car in the air, crawl under with a short
piece of rod, probably 4 to 8 mm dia, and adjust the switch to line up a
hole with a hole in the transmission shift lever.  Is this right?   I
thought I had read that the neutral switch was on the opposite side from
the gear selector lever.  This sounds like it is ahead of or behind the
gear selector lever.

I thought I recalled unplugging the neutral safety switch by taking out
the gear shift boot.   I will look on the side of the trans to see if I
can find it.   Does the backup switch work by grounding the light
circuit, or by providing power to the circuit?   If by providing a
ground, then I may have a pinched wire somewhere.

If I did unplug the neutral safety, would the backup switch still be
working?  I would think that eliminating one would eliminate both.

Thanks!

The new trans mount helped somewhat with the thumpity thump, but did not
eliminate it.  I now have the new mount and carrier bearing for the
driveshaft.  The next service, the 300D will get those parts, plus a
tensioner with new bearings, a radiator and an attempt to get the backup
lights under control.  (and an oil change)
