[MBZ] Deja vu all over again....

2019-03-14 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
Anybody else getting a strong sense the FAA and Boeing and repeating the Nixon
Administration? Boeing rather the MD, but there isn't really any difference
there

I can remember the late 60's and early 70's when the FAA decided they couldn't
afford to do all the inspections and development oversight and so "designated"
aircraft company engineers to oversee their own work and certify products as
airworthy.

On top of that, safety issues that had an impact on sales or prices were
handled by "gentlemen's agreements" rather that airworthyness directives --
with the result that several totally preventable accidents killed quite a few
people.

They say everything that goes out of style comes back eventually, but this is
one I'd just as soon not see again!

If you can't find parts for your Finnie's fuel pump, you could try new:

Corroded connectors or a bad fuel pump relay will do the same thing.

Had this issue with the TE, bad rear fuel pump would cause stalling and
starting issues. Replaced it and all is well. Not really an option on a Finny
though, I'd guess the fuel pumps are getting a bit hard to find.

White smoke on start-up is unburned fuel going out the pipe. If it started
normally and didn't have a noticeable miss, I'd guess a weak glow plugCould
also be a bad injector or low compression, but both of those give other
symptoms.

Re: [MBZ] Crazy Day with the Finnie

2019-03-14 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Absolutely - there is a silver lining!

It starts and stops intermittently, and is definitely not coming up to speed. I
could hear and feel this when I was under the car. This could be:

Galled impeller
Clogged supply line or screen
Bad bearing(s)
Bad brushes

There are plenty of sources for rebuild kits, which appear to run in the $75
range, which isn’t bad at all. Since it does run, albeit poorly, I’m hoping the
electrical parts are OK as pretty much anything else can be dealt with short of
a bum impeller, which is rare based on the research I’ve done so far.

Since I’m stoked about getting started on the reassembly of the interior, I’ll
be getting an early start tomorrow and tearing into the pump right away. Worst
case scenario if I have to wait on a rebuild kit, I can still work on the
interior….

Well the good news is that the headliner turned out great!

From my experience, those pumps can run and appear fine but not put out the
correct volume of fuel. They are supposed to put out so many cubic centimeters
per 15 seconds. I don’t know what the figures should be on your car.

2019-03-14 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Went to the upholstery shop to pick up the finnie from getting its new
headliner. Turned out very, very nice and I was really excited to get it home
and begin the reassembly process.

Drive the 30 or so miles home. At a three way stop about two blocks from the
house the car dies. Hmm. With the engine off and the key on, I notice I don’t
hear the fuel pump. Poop.

Youngest son swings by with a strap and tows me home. Get the car in the garage
and crawl under it after turning the key. I can hear the pump going on and off,
running in fits and starts, so at least it’s not locked up.

First thing tomorrow morning I’ll be dropping the pump to crack it open and see
what’s up. Hopefully nothing major.

Can’t complain, this is twice now the car has had a problem and it was either
in the driveway after a drive home or within a block or two of the house. Only
bummer is that is slows down my reassembly plans.

Re: [MBZ] Bad trailer situation

2019-03-14 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
There is a trailer place in the next town over that says the have one assuming
the farm part place measured it correctly. If they do have one I should be able
to replace it fairly easily. The first time it happened was on the passenger
side which had a blowout and was continued to drive for a while which beat that
axle to hell. I’m am fairly sure that is what caused the first time. This time
was on the wheel that hit that huge pothole. I’m convinced that caused this
issue. I could be wrong but it sure was a big coincidence.

From your description of past and present issues, I would surmise you have
an axle alignment issue. Possibly the spring mounts are twisted and axles
are not tracking each other, so, wheel forces are absorbed at the bearing.

Worth checking once you get it sorted presently. I suggest removing rear
wheel from other side of the trailer and towing it home as a single axle
trailer. Or, to somewhere you can get a new axle. Any RV shops along your
route? They usually have axles in stock.

[MBZ] Bad trailer situation

2019-03-14 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
So I’m currently in Paragould, AR with an appointment tomorrow morning to meet
with a customer, then headed down south to pickup a car for Curley. After
driving thru the Ozark mountains for 5 hours about 20 miles from my destination
I observed the left rear wheel of the trailer depart. I located the wheel but
in the process it took out the spindle. Crap. On this side of the trailer about
a year ago hauling a 140 in Louisiana I hit a huge pothole on that side. It was
a hard enough hit that it bent that back rim a little bit the tire was
undamaged. Ever since then the front axle on that side seems slightly bent.
Anyway the back wheel that was slightly bent came off. I checked everything
before I left and all was good. I had to replace this axle a couple of years
ago because the same sort of thing happened but in that case the bearing must
have froze up and eventually somehow broke off the cotter pin and backed it the
castle nut. This axle is the style that does not have a cotter pin but instead
the metal clip thing that is supposed to hold the nut in. I really don’t trust
this setup.

So I called around to some RV and trailer places around here but nobody can get
it. I called a tire and mechanic shop close by and they said bring it on by
they could take care of it. We this discovered the bottom of the spindle was
ground off. They sent me do a farm part store that sold axles and said they
could put in on. Went there they did not have one my referred me to a couple of
places in Jonesboro. I called the first one and they said they had it but not
sure they could get me in tomorrow. They are supposed to call me I’m the
morning. The other place was not sure either. The first place was going to be
$2xx for the axle and $300 or so to install it. Was going to be over $500. So
after thinking about it for a bit, I have replaced these before and it is
literally just 2 sets of u bolts on each side holding it on. If they have the
right axle I can just go to HF and buy a floor jack and do it in the parking
lot. Shouldn’t take more than an hour I wouldn’t think. Then i can head on down
and pickup the car. If I can’t locate an axle the other alternative is to limp
it the 6.5 hours home.

Re: [MBZ] OT This is kinda cool

2019-03-14 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes

huh! looks like fakebuch is done deleting evidence and back online.

Floyd Thursby via Mercedes wrote on 3/14/19 10:21 AM:
Johns Island where I live was a center of civil rights activity back
in the 60s.  I know some of the old guys who were actively involved in
these things, son and grandson of one of the pioneers who acquired an
old VW bus and hauled black kids to school in Charleston when there
was no way for them to get a high school education.  That old bus is
still around, a coupla years ago the hatch of it was taken off and it
is on display in the AA museum in DC now.  The rest of the bus has
been sitting rotting in a family member's back yard for ages.
Yesterday it was loaded on a transporter to be taken to a Smithsonian
facility in PA to get "stabilized" (rust issues) so it can also be
displayed, probably back here when there is a place for it.  here's
some info https://www.preservationsociety.org/blog/2015/08/31/testt/

Anyway, the transporter was coming from Amelia Island and had some
cool cars in it.  One of them they had to unload to get the bus in the
trailer, it was (I think) a 34 Packard.

If you can see this picture the old bus is in the background.

[MBZ] New Parts 83 240D

2019-03-14 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes
I installed the new engine mounts today. The old ones looked like they were in
good shape except they were giving almost no vertical support. The new mounts
were almost an inch higher than the old ones and compressed down about 1/2 as
much as the old ones when installed.
The new ones are supposed to be Lemforder. They were not in a box, have what
looks like an S and about 6 or 7 numbers scattered around on one side of the
rubber. It also looks like a someone wire brushed off a spot about the size of
a nickel on each one.

Yeah I saw the watermark on the pics. Probably got it for $500 or something
after it was trashed for some reason

[MBZ] OT This is kinda cool

2019-03-14 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Johns Island where I live was a center of civil rights activity back in
the 60s.  I know some of the old guys who were actively involved in
these things, son and grandson of one of the pioneers who acquired an
old VW bus and hauled black kids to school in Charleston when there was
no way for them to get a high school education.  That old bus is still
around, a coupla years ago the hatch of it was taken off and it is on
display in the AA museum in DC now.  The rest of the bus has been
sitting rotting in a family member's back yard for ages.  Yesterday it
was loaded on a transporter to be taken to a Smithsonian facility in PA
to get "stabilized" (rust issues) so it can also be displayed, probably
back here when there is a place for it.  here's some info
https://www.preservationsociety.org/blog/2015/08/31/testt/

Anyway, the transporter was coming from Amelia Island and had some cool
cars in it.  One of them they had to unload to get the bus in the
trailer, it was (I think) a 34 Packard.

If you can see this picture the old bus is in the background.
