Yes my biggest concern is that the coating fails leading to a mess. This is for
a gas fuel tank.

I've de-rusted many a lantern, the process would be roughly the same. Use an
acid to remove the rust, something like a chain inside that you can slosh
around will help knock off the big rust. Coat it later on. The POR-15 chemicals
are not optional, use the whole bottle and use their instructions exactly. I
have a snowmobile with a failed coating because I didn't get the tank clean
enough...
Uncoated would be fine if you always kept the tank full of fuel. Actually I'd
guess on a diesel its probably not as critical since the inside of the tank
would stay oily for some time after the level dropped.

I saw something like that outside of Dallas some years ago. They had built a
whole town and then the market went bust. There were developments all over the
place but no body living there. Very light traffic and importantly to me no
restaurants.Strangely the only hotel was an extended stay. I don't remember
which chain but it was a pretty nice hotel.

The vulnerability may be overstated, but the future catches up with us in time.
There was a big snit about all the pollution cars were spewing some 30 years
ago. State of Washington got all CARB on that and set up a bunch of testing
stations in urban areas and used it as a revenue stream. Cart 30 years or
older were exempted from testing.

Now, 30 years on, the whole circus is packing up tents and rolling on. There
are so many “clean” cars (prius) in the state, that there is no longer any
pollution to worry about. All the plug in and smart cars have saved the world!
I will remain in old cars that do not require computers or can be affected by
disable switches in cop’s cars. Maybe I can set up a Microwave EMP gun in my
old hoopties and use it to defend against violations of my Fourth Amendment.

Agreed.

Because of the threat of extended lack of services in the event of a CAT4 or 5
hurricane barreling through, I have several tanks of propane, a gas stove that
works without power, and a generator that will provide a reasonable amount of
power for refrigeration and a small single room AC unit. I also have many
rounds of ammo and the hardware to send it downrange in short order for
whatever need - food or defense.

I am not a prepper or doomsday scenario person. I’m am a realist. If the SHTF I
want to be prepared. And we have seen mild versions of the scenario in the
past, so we have direct experience with seeing how others less prepared react.
Poorly, at best.

Does anybody know which cars even have the capability (from the factory, not
add-ons by "buy here, pay here" dealers) of being forcibly shut down?

I believe everything with Onstar can do it, but are there any others?

Re: [MBZ] Copart SL500

2019-05-01 Thread Clay Monroe via Mercedes
The same boom/bust cycle is going on today.

While dragging her dog around the neighborhood (walking the dog) I pick up a
flyer on a house for sale. No pricing, just the normal realtor gibberish.
SWMBA gets home and all excited that we should troll the interwebz to learn
more about the six homes featured on the slip. The bulk of them have been on
the market for about a year and dropped prices by 10-15%. The homes all needed
“attention”. The newer (80’s/90s) home sport original features (not
renovated), the older homes have good bones but were last upgraded about 30
years ago when somebody was flush with cash, or had spruced it up before
selling around the time of the Exxon Valdez spill.

There is no crush or demand for commercial space. Lots of for lease signage
all over town. Lots of empty store fronts in the CBD. Very minimal new
construction going on, but for the few extended stay chains. There is even an
arsonist who likes to target defunct sushi shops and other empty spaces. What
commercial space there is looks very long in the tooth. Aged strip malls with
long time, low rent tenancy, or big box stores that have been there for a long
time and are begging for updating.

2019-05-01 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
It hyperbole, theres no way that "All of the cars in the United States could
suddenly and without warning be 'turned off'". So right off the bat the writer
is clearly an idiot.
You couldn't even turn off all the cars in one state. The writer doesn't seem
to recognize:A. How big the USA isorB. That there are cars more than 10 years
old or that don't have any interaction with the outside world. My Jetta, even
though its a 2015, has no interaction outside of itself. To "turn it off"
requires physical proximity.
So I agree with Jamie, that article sucks, its only goal in life is to scare
people and thus has no place on this list, not because its forbidden content
but its too low quality to meet the standards here...

could an exploit of 5G shut down the electric grid?

That’s the problem with code allowing a GFCI receptacle to protect the

Re: [MBZ] massive rain, breaker keeps blowing

2019-05-01 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
I had a similar problem on a circuit with a GFC-protected outlet that was
outside, but it was the GFC breaker built into the inside outlet that would
trip. I just had to wait a day or two for the outside part to dry up.

Replace the breaker. They do that when they get old. May just be coincidence.

Going to the GABC is a right of passage for the first visit to ANC. It harkens
back to the days of the pipeline and the gold rush mentality of those times.

I can recall being up there in the 80s after the pipeline was completed, and
how badly the economy crashed. You would drive out into the ‘burbs of ANC and
see block after block of empty office buildings, shuttered businesses, etc. It
was almost post apocalyptic looking.

Are you keeping your salt intake low? Nowadays it's nearly impossible if you're
away from home unless there are Chinese restaurants available where they will
provide low salt/low fat food.

Re: [MBZ] Copart SL500

2019-05-01 Thread Clay Monroe via Mercedes
I fully appreciate all your advice. I am trying to be as well kempt as
allowable. I am supposed to go out to dinner for Wednesday. I inquired as to
dress code. She says I will be fine. I want to know the caliber of the
establishment, as it will be a meal with another attorney chum of hers. I
figure formal. I should dress well. Alaska is the land of hiking boots, jeans
and fleece jackets. But twice she has tried to wrangle me into black tie
events with assurance that there will not really be black ties. There were no
tails, but ties and tuxedo were very evident. I had to leave my very formal
wear back home, so it was business suit. Even got a new shirt and bow tie.

As for old cars, she is not interested. Very practical gal. And sort of
clueless at times. Blue collar upbringing and offended by the class
distinctions she is now expected to conform to. Living in the bush seems to
fit her better than hob nobbing with the powerful in a Tech Town like Seattle
where there were people with money and the need to dress well.

I will return to my bottom feeder cars and she can drive her camper

clay.
