[MBZ] vermont title

2019-05-06 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
has anyone here actually procured a vermont title/registration from
another state?   I've been reading the paperwork and the procedure is
clear as mud.   Talked a couple weeks ago to the county here.  It seemed
straightforward.  Get ownership affidavit from them, get title bond and
bring in with bill of sale.   Went to get affidavit today and they would
not give me the form.  Claimed I had to do a bunch of BS that is not in
the laws I read.

Look up Arizona Refrigeration. If you are a "certified AC " guy [short test

Keep it original, it will blow cold. Fix what ever leaks, AZ Refrig can
make up new hoses for you, just take in the old ones.

Very Typical. People that live in human ant piles (where they push paper and
produce little of actual value) tend to have a different world-view from those
that do the hard work of providing food, fuel, energy, and equipment.

I'd probably try Envirosafe es134a. You are in AZ so you need exceptional ac.
Shouldn't cost more than $12- $18 for juice and whatever labor.

Re: [MBZ] Was: Ooooopsie, now Beer

2019-05-06 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Real German beer is hard to beat.  (Brewed to /*Reinheitsgebot*/)
Naturally carbonated. little bubbles.  tastes great even at cave or
basement temps.   There are real beers made at microbreweries, and most
are passable or good and a few even great.

Horse pee is not my favorite.   I think I have only choked down 2 or 3
cans/bottles of that in the past 30 years.  I refer to Merkun beer as
water or yellow water. (Big bubbles like soda pop)

Same with cider.  real cider is great.  Woodchuck (upchuck) is chinee
juice concentrate, watered and fermented to wine, then run through a
soda pop carbonator.  Angry orch etc is all the same.  Real cider is
made with the same process as champagne.  Fermented to wine, bottled and
second fermentation to tiny bubbles. NO sulfur.

Guiness in IE now has so much preservative that I can't drink more than
a pint.

Mitch is in a position where he can obtain good real cider, perry and
such with a short trip.  For most of the rest of us, make it yourself or
it is tough to get.  Actually I think Dan can find Scrumpy (from Flint,
MI) in his area.  I once found it in Chitcago.  Scrumpy is real cider
and cert organic too.

When I was working at the University of Texas' Applied Research
Laboratory, where Macs were used almost exclusively, there was an
application which would remap the escape function to the back single
quote/tilde key.

The undergrads liked it because they wouldn't have to reach so far for
the escape key. I disliked it because it took away the back single
quote/tilde key, which I used a lot when logged onto the large unix
machine (and which I still do in Linux).

didn’t adjust the transmission modulator. The vacuum lines were all akimbo, so
I suspect there’s a good chance the modulator isn’t even hooked up, or if so,
connected in the wrong place in the vacuum circuit, or the vacuum valve on the
injection pump is out of adjustment.

The seller said it got a new “brake booster” but in reality it got a new vacuum

But if you shift it manually and get the RPM up, it won't be that slow.

Second place is "Victory at Sea" from Ballast Point but its a heavyweight, like

Re: [MBZ] Was: Ooooopsie, now Beer

2019-05-06 Thread Bob Rentfro via Mercedes
My grandparents loved Lum's. They would each swill two mugs of Loewenbrau while
pounding Pall Malls and ordering one of those hot dogs and an order of liver
one onions. They would split each order and share.
Lum’s turned out to be one of the last places in town that continued to allow
smoking and after my grandfather passed, I would continue the practice and take
my grandmother to Lum’s once a week to swill LB and split meals.
Lum’s banned smoking about a month after my grandmother got the big job. I
don’t think it’s a coincidence.

Re: [MBZ] Hmmm...

2019-05-06 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I have no doubt things are mal/mis adjusted based on what I saw. Maybe it’s
just my attention to detail, but I find it curious that a so-called “German
mechanic” that serviced the car recently missed the vacuum valve levers and
didn’t adjust the transmission modulator. The vacuum lines were all akimbo, so
I suspect there’s a good chance the modulator isn’t even hooked up, or if so,
connected in the wrong place in the vacuum circuit, or the vacuum valve on the
injection pump is out of adjustment.

The seller said it got a new “brake booster” but in reality it got a new vacuum
pump. Still has the original brake booster. And the fluid was black, too. They
don’t know this car at all.

Well, if it had an automatic transmission which wasn't properly adjusted,
yes, it will be slow.

But if you shift it manually and get the RPM up, it won't be that slow.

I rest my case. You'll buy it for $1600 (the listed price is going to drop

Go to Simple Tire's commercial page, https://simpletire.com/heavy-truck.

BTW, the tire prices on their site change from day to day, at least for

Simple Tire has a pre-Summer sale going on now, but I think it's only for
passenger tires.

That’s what prompted my comments…

I never said they were good, I just said their only real presence in the
enterprise market was video production.

I had a stockpile of brand new, still sealed in the ESD package Hitachi drives
for the Xserve I bought from a hardware liquidator when I lived in SFO. I think
I paid about $10/each for a box full of 400GB hard drives with the special
sauce firmware for the Xserve RAID. The seller had no idea what they were, I
think they thought they were SCSI drives for the older Macs.

I shipped them back to FL with the idea that I would use them in my RAID at
home until I saw what people were getting for them in the secondary market. As
people with Xserve RAIDs had drives die off and they discovered that Apple was
no longer sourcing them from Hitachi with the proprietary firmware, the price
of these shot up. I think I sold them off somewhere in the range of $100/$200
each on eBay.

Thanks, Steve!

Yeah it is an aluminum extended keyboard with the numeric pad and nav

those, if it doesn't I might hose it down with contact cleaner and see
if it cleans it up enought to work.

You could start at 18 then go to $2k, would probably be a nice deal with

Slam it, install a kicker in the trunk, and put a stack through the hood

Not at all. I would think it can be had for that, or slightly more. Make sure

Heh. This is not a BAT flip car. It’s not that good. 212k on the clock, I think
it would need a lot more freshening to even remotely resemble a BAT flip.

The seller is not a FB person, so I doubt very much it would end up there. He
was bemoaning the travails of just dealing with the CL garbage of “sending a
check” and “could you hold it for me” and “I’ll give you $1,000 for it”. I’m
the only person who has followed through on their promise to come look at it in
over three weeks of being on CL, so I’ve immediately established my cred.

I’ll play the “Mercedes Martha Stewart” card when I respond with a link to my
web site so he can see how well I care for my cars. This dovetails right into
the closing line in the CL ad: “Just looking for a new home for it.” If that
doesn’t clinch the deal I’ll move on.

Tomorrow or Wednesday. I don’ t want to appear too eager.

Remembering I work in video production. ;)
Apple's storage option was pitiful. We trounced them handily. Years ago I got

40 year now) of the show which was all on Xserve RAID. I'll give Apple that
they were beautiful drives, brush aluminum, blue lights, gorgeous. The techs
HATED them, they were hard to setup, expensive and finicky.
Management had had enough of them and so we sat down and went through the price
book to set them up with Avid storage. They already had a bunch of our stuff at
NBC News downstairs, this story is all in 30 Rock. Anyway I figure how much
storage they need, how many boxes, what cables, etc and give all the part
numbers along with MSRP which is the only number I know as I'm a trainer, not a
sales droid. They seem happy so I finish my class and go on my way.
Unbeknownst to me they take the list I've written up to their sales droid with
a "We'd like this please." and pay MSRP just as I listed it during a time when
NBC got a 50% discount right off the top. This is something like a $500,000

So anyway I guess I should thank Apple for that one. ;)

[MBZ] Hmmm...

2019-05-06 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Went to look at this car this morning:

https://sarasota.craigslist.org/cto/d/bradenton-1983-mercedes-240d/6880347647.html

The good:

Super, super solid. I found one little area of rust inside the rear corner of
the driver’s door. Otherwise, not a spec on it.
Runs good and strong
All exterior rubber has been refreshed sometime in recent history
New vacuum pump
Records from both owners back to original purchase at World Wide Motors in
Indianapolis!

The not so good:
Vacuum system goobered up. Car doesn’t shift properly
As above, central locking has been disconnected
Interior is OK
Clear UV film on inside of all windows is crazing
Some blowby, but not bad
Exterior finish is chalky, but definitely recoverable
Rubber strip on back bumper loose, and we all know what a PITA those are!
AC is non-functional, but has a less than year old compressor on it. Says it’s
blowing air but no longer cold - original AC hoses, refrigerant leaking
through, no doubt

Belongs to the seller’s college age daughter who bought it four years ago
thinking having a “classic” car would be cool. She recently purchased a 2018
Honda Civic, so that’s apparently no longer the case. It’s got really good
bones but needs a lot of Martha’ing, but no repairs to speak of that I can see,
short of getting the vacuum system sorted and a new set of vacuum valve levers
on the valve cover (yes, they’re worn away to nothing!)

They started listing it at $3k, are now down to $2750. Daughter graduates from
college in a week or two (it’s finals week now) and is heading to graduate
school. Seller (Dad) clearly has plenty of money but has no interest in the car
himself, as he’s a VW guy. He knows nothing about it and has only driven it a
couple of times.

I spent an hour going over the car in detail and pointing everything out to
Dad, who seemed mildly interested from a car guy point of view.

I’m thinking I should sit on it for a few days and offer them $1800. Would that
be offensive? I could see putting maybe $500 into this, max, and having a nice
reliable backup car for the fleet.

Hmmm.

Hard rule on commercial size tires is 5 year life, then replace. So, it
would have to have tires. Recaps could work on rears, but steer tires, new
only. You do NOT want a front steer tire failure.

Should be able to get a set of 11Rx22.5 recaps for the rears in the
$125-$150 range, each, New steer tires, if you shop hard in the $200 each
range. Expect Chinese tires at that price, but they are actually holding up
well in the commercial use.

That’s when you got an Xserve.

I used to have two G5 Xserves and a 14TB Xserve RAID in a rack in my garage. I
had to retire them mainly due to energy consumption and heat. That Xserve RAID
was the bomb, though.

Apple exited the enterprise market years ago, which is just as well. They never
seemed to be fully committed except for your industry. Outside of video
production they were pretty much nonexistent.

The cylinder Mac Pro is a great home computer thats way overpriced. I have
one I scored for a song, its very fast, very small (about the size of 3 rolls
of duct tape stacked) and very quiet. I'd never pay full price for one but I'm
glad to have mine.
My employer got me one of the new touchbar Macbook Pros, its not as good as the
retina Macbook it replaced. Its literally the worst keyboard I've ever used. I
thought I'd forgotten how to type when I first got it. Almost 2 years in I've
gotten used to it but its still terrible. I was using a 2010 Macbook in
California last week as I'd forgotten the dongle to give this stupid thing any
ports and I remarked how good the keyboard on that is.Battery life on the new
one is okay but its because it throttles the computer down. This is the first
laptop I've ever had that wasn't as good as its predecessor. If that one hadn't
thrown a rod (complete logic board failure) I'd still be using it.

The MA bill is a followup to a 2012 measure that passed with overwhelming
support. This time they (we) are demanding access to the wireless connection
most manufacturers have moved to for connecting to the computer(s) in the
vehicle.
This isn't terribly surprising in a state that threw tea into the harbor
although it is a bit interesting for a very liberal state where not a ton of
peoples work on their own cars.
That said out where I live is much more conservative than you would expect if
you'd only experienced Boston or Amherst...
