[MBZ] Happy Birthday Harry Bell

2019-05-20 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Harry Bell turned 94 today, and celebrated with his crew at the Triplett
Day drug store lunch room.   Harry's WWII story is in this book:

by Thomas Simmons, one of the crew that gathers at 10:30 an at the Drug
store for coffee, stories good times.   The group keeps a folder at the
drugstore with the "best of" jokes and a record of whose turn it is to
pay the bill.

After the War Harry was an engineer for Mississippi Power and his wife
Louise ran a travel agency a block up the street from Triplett-Day. They
closed the travel agency a couple years ago, and Louise died last
summer.  Harry is typical of WWII vets and never draws attention to
himself, but he donates to a lot of causes and has been a great support
to the church.

Harry is getting frail, and I am not sure how many more Birthdays he
will have.   There are not a lot of WWII vets left to send a birthday
greeting to.    If y'all want to send him a birthday greeting, you can

get them.    But da widdle snowfwakes would burn them selves, so none of

Re: [MBZ] Plugging Tires

2019-05-20 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
I'm suddenly reminded of a bicycle tire leak detector I bought in the 1980s.
It's a screened container, about the diameter of a Carmex tub but half as tall,
with tiny styrofoam beads in it. You blow the tire up to 100psi, and slowly
spin the tire past the container, and the beads dance when the pinhole goes
past. It only works for gross leaks that aren't quite gross enough to feel
blowing on your face, but it sounded good in principle, and I think I only paid
about a dollar for it.

I had a screw in a new nokian on the van within a day.   Tire shop
refused to plug or patch it.  They claimed it was too near the
shoulder.   I ordered a mushroom plugs from fleabay and patched it
myself.   It is fine.   I bought a new can of cement from the FLAPS to
use with the mushroom plug.  I had a little trouble getting the tar
broken down and dismounted.   Once the tar was off, it was pretty
simple.   The muchroom patch combines the properties of a patch and a
plug.   Belt and suspenders.

Re: [MBZ] Plugging Tires

2019-05-20 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
The gooey cord plugs are all the same as far as I know.
I bought a kit at WalMart with a rat tail rasp, plug inserter, and 3-4 plugs.
Worked great. After the plugs were used up, I went back and bought a pack of
plugs.
Probably have 5-10 plugs left, haven't needed it in years.
Hardest part about using it is cleaning the goo off your shears after you cut
the excess off.

Mitch.

There are a number of places on the east side of Tampa (lower socio-economic
area) that sell lots and lots of decent used tires. I might try one of them or
see if any of them have some cheep tires I can toss on this thing. Because it
uses such big tires they’re not common nor cheap. 275/55 R17, I think.

Go to a local shop, the nationals have some sort of policy where they
can't plug tires sometimes if they could present a hazard, some states
also won't allow plugs so it presents a liability for them.  I had a
trailer tire that Firestone refused to plug, the guy told me to take it
down the road to a local shop and they fixed it.

2019-05-20 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Once my wagon AC has been in operation for longer than 10 or 15 minutes, it
will start to cycle between cold and hot. At first I thought it was the
monovalve allowing hot coolant into the heater core, but the behavior
persists after I clamp off the hose to the heater core, so the heat must be
coming from the refrigerant.

[MBZ] AC on the $500E300 210

2019-05-20 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
will sometimes BLOW ICE COLD but more often it goes warm.  If I cycle it
on/off, or EC on/off, it will sometimes reset and BLOW ICE COLD for
awhile.  I was thinking it might be a bad actuator on the blend door but
apparently there is a valve that somehow controls the hot coolant
flowing through that makes heat.  I'm not sure if there is actually a
blend door like on your basic merkin vehicles or if it has this
complicated german valve thing, or both maybe.  Anyone have an idea on
that?  I see where the valve is located and could check on that, but I
am guessing the blend door, if there is one, is behind the center
console/radio etc. as I can sometimes hear what sounds like a bad vacuum
line or solenoid hissing or choking or something up in there.

The nice thing about the soda fire ext. is that it already has a dip
tube.   no invert to empty.   Plug in the sucker to drain the oel.
when you hear bubbles, you know most of it is out.   put the hose in a
jug, and add a little pressure and blow the used oel out.

old AC hoses that I can use to vacuum the tank and then suck out the oil.
Next oil change I'm going to employ this set-up: Pull a vacuum on the tank,
jamb the end of the hose into the top of the dipstick tube and suck out the
oil, then put a little pressure in the tank, invert and push the oil into
the empty oil containers or maybe I'll just take the entire tank to the
recycling place to dump in the big recycling tank.

Its a bleeder and he's replacing the whole caliper. I'd have replaced both, if
you only do one on a front caliper it'll probably pull. Maybe a rear won't be
so bad.

having to get the car up and get under it and make a mess draining the pan.

They seem to have discontinued the one I set fire to last fall. Yellow,
rectangular metal case. I think it was a 2/10/50. I had it on the high charge
(not start) setting on the batteries at camp for an hour when the generator
really bogged down. Charger was smoking good by the time I got out there, I
tossed it in a snowbank...About 20F ambient, hard to believe it "just
overheated."

I would get one of those as they are more for charging and repairing where as
