[MBZ] “Steam” cleaner
Just saw in the 129 FB group some German dude used a dry ice blaster to “steam” clean his 129. Apparently you can rent such things but they’re pretty spendy. He posted some pics, engine looked brand new. Anyone know about this or have any experience with it? I’ve seen these carpet cleaning outfits that use some kind of CO2 fluid to dry clean rugs but this thing seems like a sand blaster using dry ice bits or something. Interesting concept. Seems like a great business idea. --R Sent from iPhone ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] Chevrolet Details 2020 Silverado 1500's New Diesel Engine
Insane price goes without saying. Merkuns will now pay any price now for a peekup, since they don't like the gummit cars. The race is on to see who can build the most expensive peekup, Stincoln, fallylac, Mercedes Benz, or a nipon newcomer. Usta be a peekup was half the price of a car, would last twice as long as a car, and intended to work. Now a peekup is supposed to be a cushioned pig house like a fattylac, costs twice as much as a car, is intended to replace a car, never to work, and lasts no longer than a car. My questions is still "How much OLD Mercedes can I buy for that much money?" A $60,000 peekup or even a $30,000 one, is not in the picture. I can buy a lotta old MB for that much money! IIRC, in 1997 Dodge's diesel was about a $4k premium, so it doesn't seem like it's changed too awful much since then. (And you get it back on resale value, at least in Dodge's case.) Well, I don't know that the basic truck is not priced at an insane price point, but the turbo Diesel engine is now where near the premium that Ford wanted when I was shopping for the F150 I bought: "It is priced identically to the 6.2L V-8 as a $2,495 premium over a 5.3L V-8 model or $3,890 over a 2.7L Turbo model." [MBZ] ML Mania
More or less wrapped up everything that needs doing on the ML today. Steam cleaned the carpets throughout, cleaned the interior well, installed the new windshield washer reservoir which required removal of the radiator support, believe it or not, and replaced a horn. The last one was the weirdest. I’ve never had a horn fail on a Mercedes. This car has the disc type horn in the front lower valance like most cars. I checked everything from the fuse box, relay, down to the horn. Got power all the way when I pressed the horn pad, so it must have been bad. I’ve got a couple FIAMM horns from the W140 S500, so I grabbed one of them. Had to change connectors, as the original horn had 1/4” push on connectors and the S500 horn had screw terminals, but that was no big deal. I now have a horn, which is nice. It’s been nearly a week and I’ve not gotten any more warning lights, so I have to assume that pulling and cleaning the ABS unit connector made it happy. I do still have a BAS light due to a failed steering angle sensor, but I’ll live with that for a while, as it’s a pig to replace and the lack of brake assist isn’t a detriment to driving. I’ll drive it a few more days before moving it to the storage site, my friend’s house a couple blocks away. He’s TDY with his family for a couple years in Monterey, CA, so the house is just sitting unused. -D ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] R129 Motor Mounts
These are all fine and dandy ideas, guys, but since the mount is a rubber part and there’s no way to gain any sort of purchase to speak of on the top side o fit when it’s installed, none of these suggestions are viable. And yes, I used a punch to try and get things lined up, but as soon as I would withdraw it from the opening the mount would move back out of position. Remember, you’re also working through an opening that’s about 1” in diameter dealing with a hole that about 3” deep in the crossmember, too. I ended up lifting the engine slightly, just enough to take some of the weight off the mount,, then using a large crescent wrench on the bosses of the mount, pulling the mount over to line things up while simultaneously running the bolt in with a long extension and a socket. Took some major gyrating but it worked, that’s all that matters. The car idles so nicely I can’t believe it. Re: [MBZ] Small world - Benz Edition
yes. Several times I didn't rush on a big project, but let the ideas simmer, and in the end, the product was significantly better than the original plan. Moving a garage in 1977 is one of those projects. Straightening basement walls is a couple others. I've done 2 of those now, and it is a one man job once you dig up around the outside. But is is still way cheaper than putting in the anchors, or the braces or other solutions. An old carpenter told me the trick. In the end, you get a dry, insulated basement that is tight and significantly warmer in the winter as a bonus. Lotsa smaller projects, i apparently put off, but the delay allowed gestation of better ideas. Re: [MBZ] AGM battery charging
I just bought one of these a few weeks ago. https://www.harborfreight.com/automotive/battery-tools-accessories/battery-chargers-maintainers/4-amp-fully-automatic-microprocessor-controlled-battery-chargermaintainer-63350.html I have an old (+25 years) Schauer(?) 10A charger that has an automatic mode. The HF one did recover the battery in the ML until it puked. It wouldn’t hold a charge when I got the car, I put the HF charger on it for a good day if not more, and after that the battery worked fine for a couple of weeks until it puked. I have to believe it was badly sulfated from sitting unused for a year, the new charger resurrected it, but some of the stuff on one of the plates fell off and shorted a cell. At least that’s my story and I’m sticking to it. -D > On Jun 8, 2019, at 12:59 PM, Floyd Thursby via Mercedes > wrote: > > Thanks, it is an automatic charger, I put it on the 2A setting, no rush to > charge it, will see what it does. Re: [MBZ] R129 Motor Mounts
After doing battle with the mount for maybe 10 minutes or so, I got things to line up. Not pleasant, but a good choice to abandon efforts last night and start fresh in the morning. Mounts are done, transmission mount is done, the car is ready to drive. I’ll move it out in a little bit and se how it feels. I know it will be better. This car has one of the transmission mounts that bolts up from the back as opposed to the top, so that made it go quickly and with minimal fuss. That was a gift after doing the engine mounts. Might do a few little things on the ML and then start in on the finnie. Gotta go hit the Ace Hardware for some bits to get my radio installed. -D > On Jun 8, 2019, at 10:28 AM, Floyd Thursby via Mercedes > wrote: > > Sounds like fun. Re: [MBZ] OT: How long have you been here? Csn you remember?
Sometime in the early or mid 90's, MBCA invited me to join their list monitored by Kathy Kennel. And over the years my membership evolved to this list. Mostly I lurk because I use the digest mode and don't have time every day to read and interact with all the information. [MBZ] R129 Motor Mounts
Been putting this one off for a long time, like since January. It’s the wife’s car, I never drive it, so out of sight out of mind, sort of. However, it’s been nagging at me with all the time I’ve been spending on the ML, so last night around 7:00 I decided I would tear into it. If you’ve ever done mounts on an M119 engine in any chassis, you know that the driver's side is usually the worst side to do, as there’s typically lots of plumbing to deal with like the AC and power steering lines. Mercedes even has a special spanner made to get to the top bolt on the mounts because it’s so tight. Don’t attempt this job without one - they’re under $20 and money well spent. I usually start with the passenger side mount as a confidence builder, as it’s usually in and out in short order. Not on this car. The passenger side mount was a total pig to remove. I got all the fasteners out without an issue, but getting the mount out of the engine compartment was another story. I ended up having to unscrew the oil pressure sender to get enough clearance to get the old mount out and new one in through this area. Messy. Very messy. So the passenger side is done. Expecting the worst, I start in on the driver’s side. Fasteners come loose without a lot of effort, this is good. Lots of plumbing, but the return line for the PS is the only thing really making it tough, and it’s soft and pliable enough I can squeeze and push to get the mount clear to remove/install. Nice. Then the top bolt starts to cross thread. Grrr. Pull the mount, clean the threads in the mount (OK, no damage) and on the bolt (threads are slightly buggered, have to hit them with a file to clean them up.) Rinse, repeat. Again. Pull mount, clean up threads. After the third time I’m ready to call it a night and head to the Ace Hardware in the morning for a new bolt. One last try and it goes! Huzzah! And now to get the small bolts on the bottom in place. Front one goes in, no problem. Back one doesn’t line up. Grrr. Move things around as best I can, no joy. Still off just enough that I can’t get the bolt started. Multiple tries pressing and moving things, no deal. It’s now almost 11:00 pm. I call it a night. I’m getting ready to head back out and tackle that last bolt. I still have a transmission mount to do, but (hopefully) they’re rarely an issue, so it should go well. And then I’ll be done with this beast. And it definitely needed mounts. The old ones were completely collapsed, but I knew this as you could feel the engine and drivetrain vibrations in the cabin. After this it's back to some much needed low impact work on the Finnie. -D ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Oops, not "fired", but "lost her job". MILPITAS, Calif. (KGO) -- Santa Clara County Sheriff's Captain Amy Le got walked off the job at Elmwood Jail this past Friday in tears, her badge and county vehicle taken away. She is now on paid administrative leave. Sources close to the case tell the I-Team's Dan Noyes the removal stems from an unpermitted arbor and barbecue grill Le built at the jail with her own money, but using inmate labor. Le reportedly wanted to create a break space for correctional staff. That was from the local TV. So it was from an official news source, but now appears to be false news. https://abc7news.com/santa-clara-co-sheriffs-captain-removed-from-job-over-bbq-grill/5328400/ Mercury News now says that wasn't the reason: https://www.mercurynews.com/2019/06/03/former-santa-clara-county-jail-union-president-placed-on-leave-amid-vague-circumstances/ News about Le’s job status surfaced in an ABC7 report Monday, which cited unnamed sources alleging that she had ordered the construction of a personally funded gazebo and barbecue grill at the Elmwood jail complex in Milpitas. She improperly assigned inmates to build it, according to the report. But multiple sources familiar with the case, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss the matter, said Monday that wasn’t the reason Le was benched. Even if the barbecue grill allegation were true, they said, it would not warrant placing her on paid administrative leave. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
