Dry soot or greasy soot?  Check for boost, proper boost control, and excessive 
oil consumption, all of which are turbo related.

Do you have excessive smoke when doing the "smoke test" -- wide open throttle, 
third gear, about 50 mph.  If so you have a fuel delivery issue, turbo problem 
(lack of boost, so excessive fuel) or low compression.

Low compression isn't a sudden thing as a rule, usually gradually gets worse.

[MBZ] Soot on the Boot

My 89 300d Is suddenly collecting soot on the boot like none other. None of the 
other diesels I’ve ever owned has done this. What’s the story?

to throw a hissy fit over the whole thing so the sales dude and I can 
bond over crazy women... then I will work him some more.

My 2000 E320 sedan is turning in 21mpg _minimum_, the highest tank I've 
recorded is 31, but that was a fluke.
A solid 27 is typical.  I've been _very_ happy with it so far.

Beats me. What I saw on the ML was that the plumbing is all different because 
of the unique tank. I have no idea if that’s the case in the sedan, but I 
certainly don’t see why you couldn’t just source a “regular” tank and pump from 
LKQ or someone and install it.

My 1998 S210 wagon averages around 22 mpg in a 50-50 city/highway cycle. I lose 
maybe a half to three quarters of a mile off that in the summer when the AC is 
going full blast. The 2002 E320 that belongs to my youngest son is currently 
averaging 21.62 mpg over it’s ownership.

The M112 engine is very economical as long as you don’t drive with a lead foot. 
And it has some neck-snapping performance if you want it. Get it over 3800 RPM 
and the shutter in the intake manifold drops and performance is just about 
equal to a V8 if you ask me.

CA cars having different fuel systems and the parts being pricey.

Looks like a piece of cardboard to cover the license plate.

This ad kicked up on the local Phoenix Craigslist several days ago. Since I
already have an 81 TD, I didn't follow up on it.
Looks like it "needs just a little love" to be "fair" red paint has
done what red paint does in desert sun washed out.. it won't buff
out... Sand and repaint required... $300 car...

No, you need to lower the front too. You can use a torch to cut the 
springs or just heat several coils so that they collapse on themselves.
That will also improve the handling because the body will not be 
wobbling around on the top of those springs.
We also recommend ditching the exhaust system in favour of a hole in the 
hood. A bit of pipe to feed the smoke up through the hood is optional.

Not certain, but I think the high window sills and thicker pillars are 
intended to make them safer. The rounded hood etc is supposed to make 
them more aerodynamic and thus more fuel efficient.

color-coded paint on the screws in the dash that he marked up when he did
that car.  Unfortunately the evaporator did not survive removal from the

that crapped out after 15 years on the road and  112k on the clock.  The 
hyundai was still  adequate five years later, but  had lost over half its 
value.  I think there were three niggling build quality issues that the dealer 
addressed.

My 2 cents.  I've had a few different modern cars as rentals, and the
visibility is terrible compared to cars made in the 90's and earlier..
High window sills and thick B and C pillars, tiny back window, REALLY hard
to see what is going on to side and behind.  Hood / fenders are so rounded
that it is impossible to see where the car ends, so you cannot easily judge
clearance in a tight parking spot, much greater risk of a collision.  Can't
stand 'em.

Get your lady friend to drive one of your Benz fleet, see how much easier
it is to drive around with excellent visibility, that might help convince
her.  A nice 210 wagon would probably do everything she needs.

bit over 60K miles despite pretty good maintenance and Hyundai would do
nothing for her. We have friends who had a Hyundai sedan that was junk.
A brand new one with a warranty might be OK as I believe they have
improved but I would be quite leery of used ones. I think you buy them
new and don't keep them long and you will be fine.

cars was not an option for a number of reasons. I drove a Ford Focus wagon and

Are you certain? My research indicates that MB started using a water based 
paint at that time (damn eco weenies) and it wasn't particularly robust. Any 
surface fissures or chips would lead to full blown rust out in short order, 
especially in the rust belt.

Yeah that was my friend but she thinks Benzes are too expensive to work 
on and maintain.  I tried to explain shop rates were about the same 
everywhere, parts weren't too expensive, and besides I would help 
maintain it.


She lost her job last week, but will probably get another offer this 
week, so she will feel flush with money and will probably buy something 
newer in an asian flavor, who knows.


But yeah, I sent her the link, told her buy it for now, $1500 cash, 
accept some maintenance, and then look for something better once she 
gets settled and sell it for $1500.  Hell I'd drive her over there for a 
little weekend getaway, but, women... who knows. I'd be all over it though.

I am probably going to visit a cousin who lives in Frankfort in a month 
or so, was looking at the Lexington list to see what things looked like 
there in Benzland.  Noticed a few rusty 210s, I think they use road salt 
there in the winter so that is probably the issue.


Coupla meth head 129s listed including that 600SL I posted, theft 
recovery, salvage title and new VIN plate attached.  No hardtop, wants 
$7900.

 My parents live on the rural/urban divide near a dirt road that accesses some 
power lines. People trap all manner of vermin and move them to that dirt road 
where they find my parent's backyard. You can tell transplanted squirrels 
because they're dumb and attack the bird feeder where they suddenly get lead 
poisoning.The crows have gotten so used to it you can tell a transplanted 
squirrel because the crows show up. After one gets popped they swoop in to get 
the remains.
I bought a Ruger .22 pellet gun at Wal-Mart last fall. For just over $100 its a 
terrific shooter, at 30 feet it'll hold pellets into the size of a dime all 
day. We shot it out to nearly 100 yards and while the group opened up to more 
like 2" and you could watch the pellets fly it was still ringing an old plow 
coulter wheel pretty good. I got it to shoot chipmunks and interestingly we 
don't seem to have any so far this year. I've seen our resident groundhog but 
he hasn't tried for the garden...

We used multiple-catch live traps for mice in Los Alamos, but I did not
release them after catching. As I told someone there, any mouse I get is
going to die -- I used to immerse the traps in water to clean them and
drown the mice at the same time.

Since there are no more bird (squirrel) feeders around the house ant more I see 
very few squirrels around. 

They would run off if I grabbed the pellet rifle so I had to be fairly stealthy 
after awhile. I managed to pop quite a few, not that it did much good. The 
learned and passed-on behavior was interesting to observe.

But the season is pretty broad, Sept 15 to March 1.
I got three chipmunks in victor rat traps in my garage last summer. 
When they invade my home, it's war.

There are so many of the little buggers around here I was giving serious 
thought to buying a pellet rifle the other day and enjoying some live target 
practice in the back yard. I just wonder if they get wise after their buddies 
start disappearing and stay away…

The video the cop took of the 'crazy squirrel' looked like a caged pet squirrel 
to me. 
Somehow I wonder if the wild squirrels will kill it promptly when the 
authorities dump it in the wild. Oh well, what's one more tree rat more or less?
