[MBZ] 722 exchange 81 240D

[Curley McLain via Mercedes]

I was able to extract 3/4 of the cut off captive nuts for the rear trans 
mount.  The Ace had 10mm captive nuts of the USA style.  I was  able to 
get them in place with a little modification.  I salvaged the missing 
spring from the old trans and reassembled the B2, then got the B2 piston 
back in, compressing the ring with a knife again.  That is sealed up and 
ready to go.  unless I can find out where the K1 and/or k2 springs 
reside in a 722.117 trans, I will put it in tomorrow, if the rain holds off.

430 was a body kit. No performance or interior items were added or changed in 
the AMG version.

[MBZ] 722.117 240D trans.

Well, I took the pan off the donor trans.  It looks nothing like the 
underside (valve bodies) of the 722.3 trans for the 300D.


I guess it has a k1 and k2 spring somewhere, but so far I have no info 
about where to put them.   the .117 valve bodies are 100% different from 
the .3 photos.


Anyone need a B2 piston and K1, k2 spring kits for the 300D?    I have 
an extra trans mount too. (Fits most models)  One on the car is ok, and 
I had a spare in the parts box.

useta be a contender.

I agree.

I had a donor vehicle available when I converted our '82 240D with a
broken automatic transmission to a NA 300D with a stick shift. I still
had to visit our local Mercedes dealer for many parts (and I still have
the list!).

A friend did some work on this show, and got me hooked up with whoever 
around here organizes extras and cars and stuff, they kept wanting me to 
bring an old Benz to some filming but their website mechanism would 
never work, some girl was trying to sort it out but never could, so I 
never was able to.  They pay a bit to either sit around, or drive the 
car around, whatever they need for scenes.  I think this show is 
finished filming for now, I have seem them around in different places.  
I saw some of these cars sitting on a lot up in MtP in Max's hood where 
they were filming a bunch of stuff, I wonder where this guy got the car 
(probably really cheap).


There are some other shows filming around too, my buddy is working some 
of them, an asst director or something.  They are doing OBX now or might 
be done for awhile.  They actually work really hard on these things, the 
schedules are kinda brutal.

BTDT - My son learned to work on cars doing just that with a donor vehicle.
He moved the 190D engine and tranny from a manual to the chassis that was
originally auto. He learned a lot in that exercise.

Driving around in the country at 55-60mph won't average 45, and I haven't been 
on the freeway much lately.

But the ad said 352 engine hours, not 352 chassis hours.
Is it the original engine?
Another possibility is the miles might actually be kms.

Kevin, if you have the manual look up 14-050 for 
the 123.123 (240D). That has both the older and 
the newer 81 on picture description and vacuum 
diagrams for the 240D.

That's what was wrong with the 190D.  I converted it to a manny tranny.
Lotta work, that.  Many parts, it's only practical with a donor vehicle

Yours may not be equipped as my 78 was, but mine had a rod running 
across the Valve Cover then to the R. side of the tranny .  at the 
tranny end (or perhaps behind the engine/over the tranny there is a 
pressed in bushing which can make for very sloppy shifting.  It's hard 
to get to but easy to press in.  But it is may not be a problem on 
yours. I had trouble finding this part and ended up calling MB Classic 
who provided it without any trouble.  You can have it if needed..


BTW, you will have to be persistent with Sun Valley.  I put one of their 
ATs in and it took many emails for them to respond to my problem.

We took Hildegard out for a test drive today, and she seems to be 
running better since the valve adjustment. The shift points seem to 
occur at specific speed and engine RPM rather than throttle 
positions. All vac lines leading inside the car are disconnected and 
capped, but all of the lines atop the valve cover seem to be 
connected, but most likely not in their proper positions. I know that 
there’s a VCV on top  of the IP that controls the transmission, but 
I’m not sure if it’s even working. I may have to take it into a shop 
since I can’t see a pressure gage for vacuum at the different ports. 
What should I check first?

salvage for $200 unless one of you wants it?  Except for the rear 
suspension attaching points being rusted out (on the chassis side) there 
are lots of new to nearly new parts.  almost new tires, new radiator, 
water pump, and the DVs were rebuilt by a local Indy, GP Relay is almost 
new.  If I charge the battery it will light off instantly.   runs and 
shifts great.  I hate to see it go but it's beyond my physical ability

does a lot of shoe repair work.  They're located in historic Hopewell,
