Traditional political saviors need to insure they never actually solve the
problem (or they will no longer be needed). That's why impossible problems
(like climate change) are the ideal basis for campaigns.

[MBZ] 722 trans again

2019-09-23 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
got everything finished up this afternoon.  The "new trans" shifts into
reverse real well.  sounds like a new trans.   When shifting into D, the
engine does not lug like it does in reverse, then it starts to chatter.
It kinda wants to move forward, but does not.

I tried running it through forward and reverse gears several times.
The fluid was a little low.  I filled that but no change.

Any ideas?   I will try again tomorrow, then I guess I will clean out
its winter quarters and back it in.  Next summer, I guess I will convert
it to 4 spd.

Re: [MBZ] 91 300D Needs to go

2019-09-23 Thread Larry Turner via Mercedes

Hi Tim,
The engine is strong.  It always started 1st try even down to the low
teens without using the block heater.  Tranny is from Rusty/Sun Valley.

The rear suspension was the death knell - before we discovered the
suspension points in the rear, that connect the rear axle/suspension to
the body is rusted & no longer connected.   Basically the rear of the
car is resting on the rear suspension.

IMO repairing it would be difficult and my limited mobility would
prevent me backyard engineering it. ;-)
You can write me direct at l02tur...@comcast.net is you prefer.
Sometimes my Mercedes email gets lost in the quantity of mail.

I do want to see the whole car removed and not just the engine if that's
acceptable?

Re: [MBZ] Costco tires

2019-09-23 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
I think the owners manual for the truck states that tires need to be
replaced at 7 years max. That's next year for our 2013 F150 with under
20,000 miles.
I'm replacing the tires on the airplane now that are at least 8 years old
(don't know how mush older with the PO) with more than 50% tread left -
don't want a blow out when the stationary tire contacts the pavement at a
remote (from home) airport at 60 MPH.

Re: [MBZ] Costco tires

2019-09-23 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
As a standing rule, 5 years is max safe service life for tires. After 5
years casing starts to degrade on the chemistry level. 7 years is the
absolute limit, in my use.
Here in the desert, where road temps routinely exceed 150 F, at 5 years,
the tread is hard, the sidewalls are showing cracks. Colder climate use may
vary those indicators somewhat, but, err on the safety side.

Re: [MBZ] OT video about our flooding issues

2019-09-23 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
Except you are exactly wrong in the case of the Charleston area coast. It is
well documented (you know, “science”) that the sea level here has risen
significantly in the last few decades, and will likely continue to do so. The
primary cause seems to be a very slight slowing of the Gulf Stream, which
apparently is due to more freshwater from the arctic. The water “backs up” a
bit.

One can argue the reasons for this increased fresh water but it is fact that it
is happening whether one believes it or not.

One thing we observed in our data from the hurricane, about 6” in a fairly
short time, is a very rapid increased fresh water rain runoff, and hence very
low dissolved oxygen levels, that derives from a runoff pulse from the
developed areas, and runs into the marsh creeks and river. This is Very Bad for
the marsh life, which sustains everything in the oceans. It essentially creates
desert conditions for the marsh. The runoff from forested and agricultural
areas is higher in oxygen which seems to reflect mixing from slower seepage and
release from spongier areas. This provides a much better input to the marsh and
creeks.

I really don't think it will leak!!

If you do use caulk, I really like the expensive RV "lap joint
sealer" - either "self leveling" (more fluid, use on a roof
Dicor, 501LSW) or "non-self leveling" (less sag, Dicor 551LSW).
It never really gets hard or stiff, it turns into a rope-caulk
like substance. It's usually about $10 a tube, but it works great.

I went to their website and read their instructions and watched some vids,
and it appeared to me that they used lap joints quite often.

I have a roller that I used to press the tape down hard, and put some extra
attention on those lap joints, so we'll see. If it still leaks into the
sunroof, I'll have to try some caulk along the raw edge of the tape.

Re: [MBZ] 722 Trans again

2019-09-23 Thread MG via Mercedes

That was a secret that I sent off line to him.
But if you promise to tell no one else here is a copy.

MG

Sometimes you have to bite the bullet. Take the
transmission out and get someone to hold it while
it is standing on the tail end. Then lower the TC
into place while rotating it back and forth
rapidly and sometimes even rocking it side to side
at the same time. Turning the engine or the output
shaft will not work in the situation where the TC
splines are not lining up. The shafts that the TC
splines are supposed to engage will not be held in
place no matter what gear you have the
transmission in. In an automatic the only
connection from the input to the output is when
there is enough oil pressure to engage the clutch
packs or if the packs are stuck together from
sitting or very tight pack clearance settings.
Thats why standing it on end will sometimes, with
enough slop, hold everything from turning as
easily. So leave it in park.

This information comes from back in the day when I
was at times doing 3-4 or more of these jobs a
day. Some of them are a total bear to finally get
them to seat.

Another thought is of course, are you sure that is
the right TC for the transmission. In other words,
did you take it out of the donner vehicle or did
you buy it already removed from someone else?

Also when the TC is fully seated you usually won't
be able to get your fingers in between the TC and
the front pump so be careful with that last drop
when the TC finally does line up. Remember I bin
there and done that, more then once. No one has
ever accused me of being a fast learner.

forward while I was pulling the trans under the car, but I don't think
so.If the tc slid forward and the ears or splines are not aligned
with the trans, that would keep it from sliding forward.I could try
putting the trans in some gear and try turning the output shaft to see
if that frees up anything holding up the trans from seating. After the
rain, I am gonna try to get the fan off so I can get the shroud off so
I can get a socket on the crank to turn the engine over. FIggered I'd
have to do that anyway to bolt the tr to the flex plate, unless I got
real lucky, and things lined up. As it stands now, I can't turn the
tc or the engine. If I could get the trans seated, then I could turn
the flywheel.Peter Frederick via Mercedes wrote on 9/21/19 2:52 PM:>

IIRC, these have a thermostatic bypass within the transmission, so
they don't flow to the cooler unless they're warm.

Looks like some have them, some don't

I think the torque converter plug was discontinued around 2002.

you use the transmission pump.

undo a cooler line fitting and slip a hose on it, start engine and
collect ATF, the torque converter takes about a gallon of ATF.

I'll see if this one has the plug, if not it gets more complicated

though did not smell burned. Gotta drain the TC this evening and get all that
out. I’m wondering if just a fluid change would cure the limp mode, but I’ll go
ahead and put in the new conductor plate since I have it. The connector plug
looks original too, the kit has a new one I’ll swap in. I hope that’s the
issue, she said they swapped a TCM. I’ll have to figure out the fancy computer
talking to it issue so I can clear the codes.

Will have to study up dropping the valve body to get at the conductor plate,
looks like there are about 9 million screws holding it in. I found some vids
on it, will have to watch them. Also saw a comment on changing a shifter
spring in the valve body while it’s open, don’t have that. Anyone ever done
this job?

I looked over the car more closely, it is pretty nice, quite clean, looks well
maintained. 225k miles. Seats just a bit worn, I wonder if some leatherique
might do some good on them? I have some I got some years ago. Found the window
sticker in the manual case, $48k new 9.16.98, sold near Dallas originally.
Looks like a “base” model as it doesn’t have the phone or CD player in the
trunk like the $500E300. Glass roof and fancy silver paint the only options.

The radiator lower support is bent down in the middle, looks like it hit a
parking bumper or ran over something. Might have to get a hammer after it then
look into a new part.

new replacement board was about half the cost of the frig. He pitched the
extended warranty hard, we could purchase anytime up until the end of the
original warranty, but we turned it down. Since then the ice-maker and the
filtered water dispenser have broken. Removed the ice maker and have more
room in the freezer, never really used the water dispenser (everyone drinks

Saudis temporarily losing half their capacity caused some price spikes a week
ago.
Here in Charlotte 87E10 went from 2.38 to 2.79. Now it's down to 2.68, but a
neighboring town is 2.54. Gasbuddy.com makes it easy to find the discrepancies,
but as a result the discrepancies within any town are fixed within an hour or
two so you usually have to go out of town to gain anything.

Sometimes I top off two or three cars when it's low, and then it goes down
10-20 cents after I buy. (before going up 30-50 cents) But more often it goes
up while I'm filling a car a day before I'm done filling them.

I bought the spring upgrade for my E320 wagon. The mechanic who did the

silly. He changed it, told me the original was fine when he took it out. I
think the spring was a dollar or two, still think it might as well be done

This AMC Kelvinator that is cluttering my driveway is still working,
and does not have a 'main control board'. But it does have a schematic
diagram glued to the back.

Seems a shame to take it to the dump, but I guess that's going to be
its fate.

Bravo! Completely understand about loss of enthusiasm but the satisfaction
of getting it done should cancel that out.

Sunday I spent a few hours cleaning tape residue from around the sunroof
opening on The White Whale, and then carefully cut and applied the
Eterna-bond RV roofing sealing tape. Inspired by Mercedes Martha (tm), I
used blue tape to lay down guide marks so I could get the roofing tape down
square. I'll be washing that car soon, before the next rain, so I'll get a
good idea of how water-tight the repair is.

[MBZ] 722.6 on this $600E320

2019-09-23 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
Conductor plate and fluid change kit arrived Saturday. Got the pan off
yesterday evening after draining out the old fluid (thanks MB engineers for
designing in a drain plug), which looked like old diesel oil. Nasty black stuff
though did not smell burned.

We bought a new Samsung refrigerator about ten years ago now, and while
still under original warranty, the main control board died. The warranty
was one year IIRC. Warranty technician showed up promptly to fix it, that
new replacement board was about half the cost of the frig. He pitched the
extended warranty hard, we could purchase anytime up until the end of the
original warranty, but we turned it down. Since then the ice-maker and the
filtered water dispenser have broken. Removed the ice maker and have more
room in the freezer, never really used the water dispenser (everyone drinks
bottle water or tap water) so we've been happy. Next time I will probably
decline the extended warranty again, unless I get some huge discount on the
refrigerator that covers the cost of the extended warranty, like I did on
our Whirlpool induction stove-top.
