Re: [MBZ] Toyota Hilux?

2019-10-15 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
I have a friend who had a 67 galaxie when I met him.   I believe his
parents bought it new.  He got over 300 k with it.  He replaces each
frod with another.  Each one got over 300k.  BTW he was an A when I
met him, working on a degree in Aero E.   Since he gradgitated, he has
worked for a major aircraft mfgr.   He takes fastidious car of each car,
as Manfred does.

We thought it was a big deal when the 65 chevey got to 250k back in 1972
or so.   300k on a domestic car was unheard of back then, but he did it.

Now the shovey was a used one.   Most used cars had the odo rolled back
in those days.   Who knows if this one did or didn't.   But care and
type of driving make a bigger difference than brand, or name or engine.

Kinda majik how domestic cars that rarely made it to 200k routinely go
250k to 350k as soon as carfax and such made hiding the odo rollback
difficult.   But the 6 cyl engines GM made in the mid 60s were crap, as
the bigwigs were trying to kill off the 6 cyl.

Mitch Haley via Mercedes wrote on 10/15/19 5:52 PM:

Sounds more like "Manfred's cars last a long time" than "Toyota pickups last a long
time".
But we can't read a lot into individual cars anyway, like "Manfred's Taco went 300k", or "the
transmission in Byron's Taco didn't make 150k", or even "the transmission in Mitch's W140 didn't make
150k", although with additional knowledge we can say "the connector that had an oil related failure in
Mitch's W140 trans at 145k is a common failure point for 722.6 and a cheap fix if caught early". For all I know, a
Toyota enthusiast would have fixed Byron's truck with a $15 part and 2 gallons of ATF, like my S420 trans.

[MBZ] New Technologies Prompt New Industry Oil Standards

2019-10-15 Thread Craig via Mercedes
It looks like we may have to be more aware when purchasing oil ...

Craig

https://www.amsoil.com/newsstand/articles/new-technology-new-standards/

New Technologies Prompt New Industry Standards
ILSAC GF-6 and API SP

Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are under pressure to improve
fuel economy and reduce emissions. As a result, most new engines today
use some combination of turbochargers, direct-fuel injection and variable
valve timing to deliver better fuel economy and increase horsepower.

The trend of lighter engine oils to achieve these goals continues with
0W-16 viscosities emerging in the market and 0W-12 and 0W-8 expected to
follow. The industry has responded to these ultra-light viscosities with
two new oil specifications: ILSAC GF-6 and API SP.

We Are Already There

Our claims about using advanced technology aren’t just talk, and this
specification update proves it. AMSOIL synthetic motor oils already meet
or exceed the new industry standards and require no change in
formulation. This is not the first time we’ve been in this position.
While the competition works on making major formulation adjustments, we
just have to update our labels. The new specifications are not allowed to
be displayed on labels until May 1, 2020. Expect to see updated AMSOIL
labels then.

The Big Split

The International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee
(ILSAC) recently set a new precedent in the passenger-car motor oil
market by splitting its specification into two parts:

GF-6A – backward compatible, provides protection for a variety of older
and newer engines

GF-6B – not backward compatible, for use in select new vehicles

Both versions focus on wear protection, prevention of low-speed
pre-ignition (LSPI) and improved engine cleanliness. However, GF-6B
features a more stringent fuel economy test. Engine oils can easily be
identified as ILSAC GF-6A or 6B by the API emblem on the front label of
the packaging. A shield will represent the GF-6B specification, while the
traditional starburst will indicate a GF-6A product. Both ILSAC
specifications meet the industry-standard API SP specification which is
most commonly found in owners’ manuals.

On rereading it I see what you mean. I like to
watch a lot of auto racing and downhill skiing and
have seen on OTA broadcasts a lot of pixilating,
more in the background then the center of focus. I
guess I will give it a try and see how it goes.

Dan Penoff via Mercedes wrote:

Yeah, the Tablo does H.264, but then again, so do a lot of streaming devices.
As our OTA stuff is no better than 720p for the most part, there’s little to no
loss. That and the majority of what we watch form the Tablo is stuff that’s low
res, like old Perry Mason episodes, so again, quality isn’t usually an issue.
Not that it matters much, but I’ve got a 4GB hard drive on the Tablo for
storage, so I’m storing at the highest (8 Mbps/second) bandwidth possible, too.

I think the key phrase here is "It'll depend on your network and what devices
you're streaming to”.

My network is 1Gb copper for most of the house, with the master bedroom using
5GHz wifi from a mesh network that has a node maybe 15 feet away. Signal
strength is solid.

I got the impression that it had nothing to do with bandwidth. Here is a quote
of what I read,

What's not so good about Tablo?

One thing we haven't touched on yet gets a little technical. Tablo has some additional
hardware inside that "transcodes" the video stream from MPEG-2 to H.264. If
you're not up on your video codecs (and we don't blame you at all if that isn't the sort
of thing you think of on a regular basis), that means the video stream is converted from
one format to another.

The idea behind this is twofold, in this case: Tablo transcodes the video so
that it takes up less room on the hard drive when you're recording, and so that
it requires less bandwidth when you're streaming the video to various devices
in your home.

Transcoding in and of itself is not a bad thing. But the downsides to this?
First is that there's a noticeable lag time when you change to a different and
it starts the transcoding process. We're talking 10 or 15 seconds or so. If
you're an impatient channel flipper (ahem), you'll absolutely notice this.

The other thing is that video quality can definitely suffer a bit, even though
H.264 is supposed to help with that. It'll depend on your network and what
devices you're streaming to — there can be a lot of variables here. Just be
prepared, is all we're saying.

So I don't know if they have fixed it or if it isn't that noticeable.

Just wanted to get another opinion.

Dan Penoff via Mercedes wrote:

There’s more of an issue with the OTA (over the air) stations when it comes to

rarely occurs.

Show me any of your Mercedes or mine that have had so little work

Hell! I put more than that into my 83 Mercedes to get it up to not

right but you don't know what was done to it or
how it was serviced. Just because it was dealer
serviced does not mean it was done right. I did
all the service on our Tacoma so all I can say is
that either we got very lucky and got a good car
or there is something that went on with your
neighbors car that no one is telling.

That said all our cars that we bought at new or
near new, 94 Chevy Astro, 78 Jeep Cherokee, 69 VW
beetle, all did over 300k miles. Some more then
others and all except the Beetle without major
work. I rebuilt the beetle engine once but I was
rather hard on it at the time.

it was dealer serviced, not driven much, and until the last two years of its

vehicles and lawn equipment. I can't imagine a trans service being skipped when
he was around. Unfortunately the guy didn't fit in a 2018 Taco, so he had to
buy a Tundra this time around (he buys only Toyota/Scion and has way over 200k

Re: [MBZ] Cord Cutting

2019-10-15 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I have been watching Netflix and Amazon Prime mostly, the quality seems
to be getting better.  I have like 15Mbps cnxn so plenty of bandwidth.
It's really weird, every evening at like 11:44PM the bandwidth goes to
like a 56k dial up connection, picture gets all blocky.  This is every
night at almost exactly the same time.  i don't know if I have some
device that is calling home, or my cnxn goes into fits for some reason,
or what, but it is really weird. After a minute or so it will recover
and the picture slowly gets better, I guess as it buffers or something.

Amazon Prime has a bunch of other channel apps you can download, i was
leeching HBO I think, and it had a lot of stuff too. The AppleTV also
has lots of stuff, including the PBS app so you can watch most
everything on that.  The news is a day later, but who cares, nothing
changes anyway.

I got the impression that it had nothing to do
with bandwidth. Here is a quote of what I read,

What's not so good about Tablo?

One thing we haven't touched on yet gets a little

from one format to another.

The idea behind this is twofold, in this case:
Tablo transcodes the video so that it takes up
less room on the hard drive when you're recording,
and so that it requires less bandwidth when you're
streaming the video to various devices in your home.

Transcoding in and of itself is not a bad thing.
But the downsides to this? First is that there's a
noticeable lag time when you change to a different
and it starts the transcoding process. We're
talking 10 or 15 seconds or so. If you're an
impatient channel flipper (ahem), you'll
absolutely notice this.

The other thing is that video quality can
definitely suffer a bit, even though H.264 is
supposed to help with that. It'll depend on your
network and what devices you're streaming to —
there can be a lot of variables here. Just be
prepared, is all we're saying.

So I don't know if they have fixed it or if it
isn't that noticeable.

Just wanted to get another opinion.

pixellation or quality, but again, we’re so close to the antennas here it
rarely occurs.

I gave some serious thought to an xB when they first came out, but the dealers
wouldn’t deal on them because of the demand. I figured it would be a good cheep
commuter car. Only thing I didn’t care for was the dash and parts of the
interior were really cheap and plasticky.

My next door neighbor traded his Taco a year or two ago when the dealer wanted
to replace the transmission on it. I'm not sure how well maintained it was, but
it was dealer serviced, not driven much, and until the last two years of its
life the neighbor's fastidious ex boyfriend had a hand in the maintenance of

Show me any of your Mercedes or mine that have had so little work

He might find it a fair bit easier to find a 4Runner which would be
about the same in running gear. I had a 95 which is the 2nd generation
and apart from rusting, it was fairly decent. The 3rd generation has
more power, and more interior space. If he can find one in AZ that might
avoid the rust issues.

I had a 70 Hilux back in about 74 and sold it in 75. It was a neat
little truck but had a very small cab. Not much legroom.

Back around 1970, J I Case had a proving ground near their backhoe and
bulldozer plant at Burlington.  One of the guys who worked there drove a
220Sb.  The employees would have offroad races around the place.  Think
motocross in a car.    The 220Sb won almost all the time, according to
what he told me.   220Sb won the Argentine grand prix, (which is pretty
much offroad) in the 60s.

My 190Dc was far better on crappy pothole/washboard tracks than any
merkun car or truck.

If he could fix it himself, a ML is probably as good a choice as any.
But if someone else has to work on it, then you are on the right track, Dan

He’s been in the pickup truck mode for a while, but balks at considering
anything domestic for some unknown reason. As I’ve mentioned before, a decent
used domestic truck like a Ford, Chevy or Dodge would be ideal, as there would
be no problem at all finding support for them in such a remote area.

I’ve planted the seed several times, but I’m still waiting for it to sprout. I
suspect it will at some point in the future. Hopefully sooner than later.

Re: [MBZ] Toyota Hilux?

2019-10-15 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
We’re talking about using it in an area like northern Arizona. Extremely
rugged, extremely rural. Not tooling around on improved roads much of the time.
No service facilities or a place to work on it should something break.

Re: [MBZ] Toyota Hilux?

2019-10-15 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
This time it was an aesthetics and functionality thing. He likes the simplicity
and the styling of the W124, but thinks he can off road with 4Matic.

I suggested a W210 4Matic, as they’re far more common, less expensive, and more
reliable and easier to maintain. I pointed out that the original 4Matics were
troublesome and prone to leakage.

But hey, what do I know, right?

I hauled a lot of construction materials (including 80BF of dirty rough sawn
cherry) in my mint interior 1999 4matic.
Interior was far from mint after I had it a month.
Only real problems I ever had with that car were dead fuel pump (inline and
easy to swap), rusty brake lines, and HVAC gremlins.
But 124 4Matic is an entirely different can of worms.

Thanks, Mitch. I messaged the link to him. I’m guessing he won’t follow up on

heard.

At least I was able to talk him out of a W124 wagon with 4Matic. He had some
idea that it would be a good alternative to a 4WD pickup truck.

We’re working off our alternate sources right now to get a feel for how things
will be, and we haven’t had any quality issues so far. That’s with both
streaming services as well as the OTA stuff. It also includes setups that are
wired as well as streaming over WiFi.
