I already have 5 extra W124 rims, so I'll pass. The shipping would be

Re: [MBZ] 124 rear brake tubing

2019-11-30 Thread Rick Knoble via Mercedes
You "can" make a partial double flare work in a pinch, however, they really are
totally different. I'll explain. On a double flare the back side of the flare
that rests in the tubing nut is a cone shape. On an ISO flare or bubble flare
the back side of the flare is flat, as is the face of the nut.

I've never differentiated between double and bubble. Double Bubble is
bubble gum. Both are in essence the same thing. the double is just
crimped down all the way. Bubble is the start of a double. THe
110/111/112 used double.

This is pretty much identical to the snappy tool, only about 1/4 the
price. Back in the 70s, bobody I could find had one other than
snappy, and nobody had metric brake lines available either. So I had to
take US brake line (3/16) and adapt it to the MB Usage by reusing the
nuts I cut off the MB.

is pretty similar to the one you showed in the link to the river of
warlike wimmens, except that one has hex buttons to keep them from
rotating, which I never perceived to be a problem as long as you
lubricated the cone.

I think we are mostly arguing over semantics.

HaHA!  THat is the same thought I had, but I sent the link to my kids
with the comment that I never coulda sneaked that into Jr high study hall.

When I was in Jr high, my did bout some early marker type pens that were
just under 3/8 dia OD about 1/4" ID and the barrel was about 5" long.
They came with a metal pocket clip.   I kept a pocket protector inside
my portfolio (remember PeeChee?) and it looked like just another pen in
there.  I carried 2-3 sheaffer cartridge pens and a couple pencils too,
so the protector was pretty full.  Without close scrutiny, it just
looked like pens and pencils.  But I could put a spitball with amazing
accuracy.   My crowning achievement was to hit the study hall teacher
from about 30-40 ft dead center, just below the neck from where it fell
down into hooterville.   I almost got caught, but I don't think she
believed anyone could nail her from that distance with accuracy like that.

I still have my little peashooter somewhere.  I think it is in the
draftpack with the drafting tools, still in a pocket protector.

Re: [MBZ] HF work lights

I’m talking specifically about the 18150 lithium ion batteries used in the HF
LED light.

They’re poorly made Chinese or Taiwanese imports and my experience has been
poor with them. I went to eBay and bought name brand versions for just a little
bit more and they’ve done far better than anything I used from Amazon. You’ll
note there is a lot of junk on Amazon, some of which have ratings that are
physically impossible for a battery of that capacity to have…

You can’t find quality 18150 batteries on the Island of Large Wimmen. However,
there are good quality name brand ones on eBay.

I had a snap-on double flare tool. It was still difficult to get a good
double flare on the US line, and even harder to get a good one on metric
line. BTDT...starting 40+ years ago. That's why I prefer now to buy a
length of metric line with the double flares already done.

The double flare tool is a plain old flaring tool, with an assortment of
"buttons" you stick on the end of the tube, and under the flaring tool
cone. On the small size metric tube, the little pin that goes in the
tube to hold the "button" in place is so thin it breaks off easily.
Snappy will NOT warrant them. When I needed to do a double flare, I
usually bought 2-3 of them because at least one broke for ever flare I
made successfully. There is an art to figuring out how much of the
tube to leave out of the clamp. I think it is about 2D if memory serves.

If you don't want the length to be a few inches off, just get a 25' roll of
brake line, a box of flare nuts, and a bubble flare tool.

Re: [MBZ] 124 rear brake tubing

2019-11-30 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Replacement tubing from the dealer will come in a straight length or possibly
folded in half depending on the length of the piece. It is not sold “pre-bent”,
so to speak.

Hard lines are shown in the EPC. I see them without any problem. Try looking
here:

http://mbepc.net/1/fg/300/15v/124030/0/42/090

Note that there are tabs above the diagram labeled #1 and #2. They’re not
terribly clear, but when you click on one of them you’ll bring up that drawing.

The line from the front to the rear “distributor” (tee) is part number
1244201328 for example. Around $45 from the dealer.

With a VIN it’s far easier to identify the correct part(s).

[MBZ] 124 rear brake tubing

2019-11-30 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
has anyone ever changed brake tubing in the rear of a 124?   It does not
show up in the online parts diagrams.  Someone on the PP forum was able
to get a coil with fittings on the ends from MB, but it had to be bent
and he complained it was about 3" too long.  (should be easy enough to
hide 3" somewhere.)

If you have changed it, what did you use for tubing and where did you
find the other end?   Apparently cars with the locking diff run separate
lines and some early models have a T above the rear axle.

As of now, I will get pieces as close as I can to the right length from
FLAPS.

Do these dudes need to graduate from sharpshooter school to apply for the
job?

When I lived in DC, I used to Hash through Rock Creek with the DC3 Hash
House Harriers. In fact there was an annual "Chandra Levy - Where Are You?"
run for several years, until her remains were actually located...in the
park. Probably ran by her several times, actually. I believe it was a
curious dog that finally located her remains. Tragedy, in any event.
