Re: [MBZ] Green/green 1993 Mercedes Benz 300Diesel - $3200

2020-01-19 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
I would think the EPDM roofing would work, but finding the valve fitting
might be a trick. I've never had or seen an ortho seat, so I don't know
what they look like or how they work.   I wonder if vacuum bags used to
make composites would work.  or the composite cryovac bags that boxed
beef etc is packed it.  It is tough, has heat sealable layers and
durable.  But same thing, where do you find the valve.

What about rubber roofing sheet? That stuff is tough and adhesive will
bond it. Scraps are easy to find at roofers shops

[MBZ] MBCA meeting

2020-01-19 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Went to an MBCA meeting yesterday.  First one in a long time.  Had a
technical session at the stealer.   The service manager seems to be a
nice guy.  gave up printout of the walk around inspection the service
writer does when you drive in.  a copy of the inspection the mechanic
does when he gets the car. and showed is the service bay with 10 lifts.
There was some discussion of tars.   Overall it was lame.  Clay's
section and Dealers throw better tech sessions.   In fact theirs are
better than any I have been to.  The stealer did provide a nice lunch
and door prizes.   We got them to sign off on the mileage awards for the
87  300D while we were there.

The group then toured Jeff Davis's home.   One of the members in
attendance showed us a picture of the bed he sleeps in.   It had been in
his great grandpa's house in nawlins.   When Jeff Davis came downriver
after attempting to re-interr his father, whose grave was being washed
away by The River, he was sick and stayed with a friend in Nawlins.  The
friend was the MBCA members great Grandfather.    Jeff Davis died in
that bed.  It was very similar to a bed present in the Jeff Davis house,
a half canopy bed.

Cool. I have never seen those seats.

It would be pretty easy to make any shape out of Orca hypalon. The glue is
readily available, as are fittings. It is extremely tough. Getting some
little patterns made from the old bladders would be the only hard part,
pretty much.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Network Wiring Day!

no.   It was quite interesting in the 70s when the LDS began buying up
parts of Nauvoo. The RLDS already owned many of the historic sites, and
had a visitor's center.  LDS sent individual families to buy up the
places they were interested in, basically undercover.  I don't believe
any of them let on that they belonged to the LDS church.   When they
controlled what they want, they unmasked and built a huge visitors
center.   The RLDS was not happy over this.

When I climbed the tv tower under construction, I think before 80'  up I
could see Nauvoo.   I quit at 160 of 200' because I could see from
Burlington to Keokuk and most points in between.   Probably now 40-50'
would be enough to see the new temple.   When I climbed, there was no
temple.   Apparently there was some friction between my ancestors and
the Brigham young group somewhere between late 1844 and 1846 when a
group came up from the Montrose encampment to expropriate certain property.

Vista Dome!    Riding through colorado and the calif mountains in the
Vista Dome of the California Zephyr was a great experience.   Repeated
it in 1988 when we moved to Hawaii, but that was not along the Feather
River Valley, but on the modern Amtrack route.   Not as spectacular, no
vista dome, but still memorable.

No key unless the person on the title gets it.

That’s a long ways away for a roll of the dice. If you’re up for a road trip
and potential disappointment, take $2k with you, look at it, assess the damage
and offer her $1800.

Sellers like this tend to respond when they see the $$. For example:

Saw a KitchenAid burr style coffee grinder on FB today. These retail for around
$250, maybe less if Mitch is shopping it, but they’re not terribly common and
rarely show up used. Story is they bought it, used it a few times and didn’t
like it. By the time they made the decision they couldn’t return it. Asking $85
with book and original box. Been for sale for nearly a month.

PM’ed the seller and offered $70.

They countered at $75.

No thank you, but thanks for the offer.

An hour later they’re PM’ing me asking if I can come get it today they’ll sell
for $70. What sucks is that they’re nearly an hour away in Bradenton. I haven’t
decided whether I want to sacrifice two hours of driving time for this with all
the stuff I need to get done.

Hmm.

Re: [MBZ] E500

2020-01-19 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Yeah that's a thought, good point about old car...  $1500 no key?  Go
with the trailer get it, get the title, get it registered here, then go
to stealer for a key?  I think like on the 220 there is a way to get it
in neutral without a key so it could be dragged on the trailer.

I looked at the pics on the computer where I could see them better, it
looks pretty clean aside from all the crap in it but the pics are kinda
limited.  I suppose with a key even if there are some issues I could
probably sell it for something reasonable to cover costs/risk etc. or
fix it.

So I saw this 211 05 E500 from an estate sale in amongst all the other crap the
old man had. Didn’t sell at the sale yesterday. 4hr away in Jawja. Looks pretty
nice. Clean title but no key. 4hr away.

Been sitting since the old man left this mortal coil in September. The seller
said she road in it back then and it was all good, FWIW. Asking $2300, another
$350 to get a key. Can’t tell from pics if suspension is ok but if it’s been
sitting a few months it might be dropped. With no key it would be hard to tell
how it runs, suspension, etc. I asked for VIN and pic from side to see if it is
slammed.

I’m trying to figure out how to do this. Would be a nice upgrade from the 210
$600E320, I might swap it to my daughter for her 124 E320 then sell that and
make a few $$ and she would have a newer car.

What would be the best way to take a winger on this thing? Pay for the key then
see if it works, sell the key back to the seller if not, or then lowball it if
it’s got issues? Or lowball an offer then get a key?

The woman had been responsive to questions, took a bunch of pics and sent them.
She just sent me VIN and a coupla other pics but can’t get a side pic way it’s
parked but says it isn’t slammed. I’ll shoot K the VIN get a read on it.

I think she just wants it gone.

The rear impact strips are still available.

No idea on the rear bumper cover, but there are a bunch of aftermarket
options including whole amg kits from Lithuania and other places. I dont
know of any that are good; I have an OE front and a Lithuanian front so I
will compare them and see what I find. Still in box out front.

was religious about servicing and maintaining and he is listing it for a
lower price because he purchased another vehicle. The only issue is he
has been getting a code for the shifter, she drives great and shifts but
this code comes up occasionally. I’ve researched online and this can be
as simple as a bad battery to the actual transmission. If you have any

I think they are all 4matic.  I'm thinking the leak is the sunroof
drain; if not, a tube of silicone sealer will fix that right up...

Guy said 2 other people were scheduled to look at it, I'm sure it will
go fast.

The friend with the Nissan Rogue I helped her buy said it died Friday,
probably trans sh*t the bed, shop has it to look at it Monday...  I feel
kinda bad for her, she doesn't have a lot of $$ right now so was
thinking pick it up and let her use it for basic transpo, sell it or
whatever after.

Not worth the effort.

The material they used is a heavy vinyl that’s heat sealed and formed to match
the contours of the seat back or bottom, depending on the location of the
bladder. The only one that’s a basic geometric shape is the lumbar bladder,
which is a square. The material is not “stretchy” like rubber, it has a defined
size and shape. That’s what limits it from "filling” beyond a particular area.

Use an old inner tube and you would blow out your upholstery…

Re: [MBZ] Green/green 1993 Mercedes Benz 300Diesel - $3200

2020-01-19 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I totally agree with Jaime’s mindset on this sort of thing, as well as his
observation of W140 values. I would caution anyone to avoid W140s unless you
know them well and can clearly assess condition. Due to their complexity,
there’s a lot of “fixes” that can be hidden if you’re not dialed into all of
the systems on these models.

More importantly, you have to put a value on your use of the car. I don’t see
many people taking that into consideration at the time of purchase or sale. The
car either will or has provided value as transportation, so that has to factor
into the total cost. I don’t believe I’ve ever sold a car at a loss as long as
I considered this as a part of the car’s value. Maybe I’ve only broke even in a
worst case scenario, but if I have lost money, it’s only been on paper based on
the raw values without considering usage.

As for the green car, I would beat up on the seller big time over the rebuilt
title. That’s a HUGE red flag for most potential buyers and will scare many
away before they even thought of calling on this car. As long as I can
understand the reason for the rebuilt or salvage title on a car I can move
forward from that point, it doesn’t deter me from considering it. Even if the
seller can’t explain, maybe due to it being something that occurred with a
previous owner, if I can inspect the car and be satisfied it’s good, it’s a
major negotiating point. One of the best MBs I’ve ever owned has a rebuilt
title (1997 SL500).

I’d be all over this if it was local. The car is well optioned, not just
green/green, but I also spy orthopedic seats. I wonder if it has ASD also.

As you all probably know by now, I find much more value in these cars than
just the price paid. I’ve also found that if you treat cars based on their
value as whole (usage, ownership experience, cost of compatible
transportation, etc) the value of the cars does go up significantly. I
typically buy cars on the lower end, although my definition of lower end
may be different than most people on the list. But I’ve managed to sell my
last few daily drivers for 2-3x times what I paid for them after ownership
for 2-3 years and 20-30k miles. This was a 350SDL and two 123 diesels. I
did put a lot into each car, but in the end I usually come out roughly
breaking even. This 124 could easily be one of those cars.

My 140 is a different story... I’d probably get what I bought it for, but
140 market is quite different. Its too difficult/expensive to make a car
with needs into a good one. I’d like to get into another 126, or a 124 or
even 123 again for daily use. Just waiting for the right one to come
around. If this green/green car was closer, it would be it.
