PVC is more rigid than polyethylene, it may make it easier to install
before you start pushing dirt over it.  I know that ours, black poly, needed
a lot of hand manipulation to get the heads properly aligned in the ground
as you buried it.

Beats me. Here you’re typically putting the sprinklers in before the sod, and 
it doesn’t have to be more than a few inches deep since we don’t have to worry 
about freezing. Not sure if that’s why they use PVC or not. Never seen the 
black poly used here, although I am familiar with it.

The Saab indy I worked for in the 1980s was also an irrigation installer.
Everything was black poly. And if tree roots ever broke it, I never heard
about it. I don't know why anybody would pay more for rigid PVC with
joints every 10', that does not sound at all like a professional
installation.
With the poly, you just put a pulling blade on the ditch witch, dragged
the pipe underground, and dug it up a bit where you needed to install the
sprinkler heads.

Yeah that's what I'm hoping.  It looks like the guy she bought it from 
(last pic on the listing) had it for $3500, she got in over her head and 
the guy doesn't want to talk to her now so she wants to be rid of it.  I 
think you might be right, could be just a bunch of little stuff.  I'll 
throw a battery in it or jump it, get it running, see what the deal is 
with it.  She's probably not going to want to take the hit on it but 
life is sometimes Not Fair...


I'm guessing too she cribbed the pics from the listing when she bought 
it, so it will be interesting to see if it still looks decent since 
whenever that was.

The car apparently died somehow and is sitting in the street by a friend's

need work. Here are The issues I've found: the Timing belt needs to be 
tightened, coolant fluid container seems to have a craxk but I'm not sure. 
needs new brakes soon, odometer is reading 10 miles wrong, lights in the back 
don't work or in the dash, turn signals don't work in the dash or in front or 
back of car ( this might be just a fuse issue) the speakers might be blown but 
it also might just need a new radio. Seems to have trouble going over 40 but 
its more of a city car anyway. Again i don't know much about it so I am selling 
this for someone to have fun working on or for parts. Interested in trades for 
small car or crossover in working condition.

Went out and did some work on this today. Was able to clean some more of the 
growth away from the pipes so I could get all the way around the pipe and tee. 
The tee and pipe are clearly separated, and quite cleanly. It was easy to tell 
once I got the dirt away from both and hosed them down with some brake cleaner.

So here’s what I did:

Cut a very narrow (1/2” wide) piece of 1” PVC and cut it down to about 90 
degrees worth of pipe. I gooped up the joint with Don’s epoxy, which did a good 
job of filling the gap, and put this small piece on top of the gap between the 
pipe and tee. Then I gooped up all over the pipe and tee and took a piece of 1” 
PVC about 2” long that I split lengthwise. I gooped it up well inside, then 
spread it apart to go over both the side of the tee and the patch/pipe. I used 
the remaining epoxy to fill in gaps at both ends of the overlapping piece.

Now it sits. Nice warm day today, and where this is located might even get it 
some direct sunlight to speed things along. I’ll test it with line pressure in 
the morning after it has a good 12 hours to set up.

Worst case, it continues to leak. Best case, it doesn’t. If I end up with just 
a few small leaks around the patch I’ll get more epoxy and slather it around 
wherever there are leaks.

Grant, I like your approach with the cheap chain saw, and it’s certainly the 
best one I think. I suspect I’ll be doing this at some point in the future, but 
for now if I can get away with a kludge i prefer that approach. I’m only about 
4’-5’ away from this tree, so I suspect that even with a sharp chain saw it 
will be slow, slow going and potentially damage the tree. I would gladly forgo 
the sprinkler than risk the tree.

You don’t need the coolant reservoir to run the car. You could easily cap or 
pinch off the line to drive it  a short distance without an issue.

You’ll know if it’s toasted. Believe me, it’s not hard to tell.

Sounds like it may just be a bunch of little niggly things that have cascaded 
into a “I don’t want to mess with this anymore.”

I was going to go look at this car this afternoon but we are in the 
midst of a nasty storm likely to continue into tomorrow.  If it lets up 
some I might go there


The car apparently died somehow and is sitting in the street by a 
friend's house 3 blocks from the owner's residence, with a battery that 
only clicks the starter...  She really wants it gone.  I don't have the 
urge to go there today in the midst of tstorms and ternaders and such, 
so will probably go tomorrow.  I don't know why she isn't driving it, 
I'm wondering if the head cracked or something and blew up the coolant 
tank, or it cracked and the coolant ran out or what.  I should pull the 
tank out of the old TD and put it in, fill it up, start the car and 
drive it to see what the story is? Or just assume it is bad and beat her 
down on the price that way, load it on the trailer, then fool with it later.

Oak tress tend to die around here when the roots are disturbed, so keep
