Plexiglas = acrylic, so yeah, that's not stopping UV, but UV can make it
yellow and weak. IIRC it also shatters into sharp shards.
Not what I'd choose for a canopy.

Lexan = polycarbonate = more better.
PC eyeglass lenses are considered UV blocking. They're strong, moderately
high index, and block UV. The biggest argument against PC is it induces
chromatic aberration when you aren't looking through the center of the
lens.

Re: [MBZ] I’m thinking about Poos

2020-04-22 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
I have one on the pole up by the road where the underground line runs up to a
pole transformer then the lines run to the house. It’s a fuse Tree branches
are always hitting the lines and shorting out the fuse which blows and sounds
like a really loud gunshot. The guys show up and replace it usually pretty
quickly.

It helps that I let this kid who works for the power company hunt on the vast
estate. If I need something I shoot him a text and he usually gets on it pretty
quickly. Last fall before the hurricane we had some wind and rain before it and
the wires got tangled up from a tree branch hitting them. He and his crew were
sitting about a mile up the road when I texted him, two trucks showed up in
about 3 minutes and 20 minutes later I had power back. Didn’t lose it during
the storm.

Plexiglas does pass enough UV to cause sunburns, as I've gotten them in the
past in an airplane. When we repaleced the windshield in the C182, I bought
one with 95% UV blocking and could only get up to 50% IR blocking. It is
noticeably more comfortable than plain Plexiglas, whether tinted green or
gray, or clear.

Re: [MBZ] ***SPAM*** OT: Pulse Oxymetry to detect COVID-19

2020-04-22 Thread Clay via Mercedes
Alaska is nuts about their tabulations. They are tracking almost anything
available to nail down future disaster funds. We are told how many new cases
pop up, where, if it is travel related or they got it from the neighbors free
roaming cat, who is locking down best and how much time you need to be wearing
a mask, what the mask is made of, who sewed it, was it US fabric or from Asia.
Totally ludicrous. So far the death count is stalled at 9. Each day a new
drib or drab of infected, but over 50% recovered with all manner of health
facilities begging for bodies in beds. The unhoused are allowed to roam the
streets unhindered, spreading plague as they gather to share bottles of Night
Train.

The biggest idiocy to my mind. The count of dead includes people who perished
NOT in Alaska. Nine dead. A third of the statistic joined the Choir Eternal
in the lower 48. In the past month there have been SIX dead out of 329 ill
with 162 all better, thank you for kissing my booboo and patting my head.

Your local figures may vary. I am in no way belittling any tragedy you are
encountering in your current place of habitation. I do get a chuckle that the
WRD struck Kolifornia weeks prior to the scary outbreak up in Seattle. Over
two months go by before we found out there was an ongoing infection event with
bodies dropping. Time for everybody to comb back through the numbers to better
be able to assign cadavers to the list. It does look as if the infection was
carried across the Pacific by students returning from the holiday break to
Universities on the west coast back in January.

Re: [MBZ] Why is gas not running about .25 per gallon?

2020-04-22 Thread Clay via Mercedes
A concatenation of events which precluded making a more salubrious housing
selection. Mostly having no knowledge of market/geography/socio-economic
factors related to desirable neighborhoods within her price range. There was
also a short time range in which she had to nail down purchase due to tax laws
related to real estate investment exchanges. This was the best option given
the steaming pile of dung the Anchorage market had at the time.

Not to say the selection is any better now. Boom bust cycles around here have
lots of inventory sitting in foreclosures, so, like with our cars, the things
languish and decay before the banks get done with paperwork so the real estate
can be put back on the market in a boom swing.

Strangely, the fellow who owns The Alaska Mint (he just makes gold and silver
coins and jewelry) has a spectacular home on a fly in lake a few blocks away,
almost under the flight path of the cargo jets. Reminds me of a Russian
oligarch Dacha or large chapel in the woods.

Anything and everything. If you test for COVID-19, that's your cause of
death. You could be 105 years old with lung cancer, Alzheimers, ALS,
liver failure, kidney failure, and diabetes but if you test positive for
COVID-19 that's what goes on your death certificate. Almost like there

Indiana just added a bunch of deaths to the official count where there
was no test but where symptoms were "consistent with" COVID-19.

I probably wrote this before, but it bears repeating. Sooner or later the

fuels adjacent to diesel on the cracking spectrum, the availability of
diesel fuel could potentially be interrupted. Which, if you receive

I love the smell of marine diesel. Not sure I would have enjoyed coal/steam

The NG powering of ships is a thing. One of the companies running cargo to AK
is retrofitting their boats with giant LNG tanks. It must free up space in the
hold for more of the heavy freight, as the tanks are pretty high on the stern.
Really easy to target with an RPG were a terrorist so inclined. Even painted

Yes, UV will get through, but greatly reduced.

The intensity of full sunlight is insufficient to deactivate a
lipid virus, so the UV exposure will do nothing for the Wuhan
flu. However, the elevated temperature will definitely decrease
the time for the virus to deactivate.

The UV exposure may be enough for bacteria or fungus - I don't

[MBZ] ***SPAM*** GLK350 "Intake Manifold" Code?

2020-04-22 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
Anyone have a clue?

DIL had to bring the 2010 GLK350 to the dock in HNL for shipment stateside
because my boy is PCS from his USCG cutter in HNL to a small boat station in
Warrenton, OR. But she gets a code when starting up, and Uncle will not accept
a vehicle with code for shipment. So she takes it to the stealer.

Stealer informs her that the code is for the intake manifold, clears it, and
the car is now enroute. She is worried that it will be a problem to drive from
Seattle POE to my indie in Portland.

I recall something about carbon clogging intake manifolds, but I think that was
for diesel Jettas.

Do any of you have an idea what would cause that code, and what the cure would
be?

TIA,

Re: [MBZ] OT - Sprinkler Leak

2020-04-22 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Thanks for the kudo.
It is strangely satisfying to chainsaw dirt... isn't it... hahaha..

One of my side investments is in an urban sawmill operation that harvests
damaged or storm damaged trees, many are exotic woods imported into the
desert environment to landscape expensive homes and golf courses... The
logs are cut into boards, carefully dried, then processed by local wood
artist into furnitu*re and "other wood items". *So, I put my extra special
saw sharpening skills to work for chain saws... which most seem to hold in
awe.

So, sawing dirt is the exact opposite of making fine cuts in exotic woods
to preserve decades old urban growth [and in Arizona, carefully watered for
it's entire life].
Sort of my personal version of "save the whales"... balanced by "sawing
dirt" ... brought on by the salvage of the entire tree stump, which, when
cleaned properly [remove all rocks and dirt before saw milling] produces
some of the most exotic grain for table tops and other "wood art of
interest".

Ultraviolet radiation penetrating vehicle glass: a field based
comparative study.

Kimlin MG[1], Parisi AV.

[1] Centre for Astronomy an Atmospheric Research, Faculty of Sciences,
University of Southern Queensland, Toowoomba, Australia.

Abstract

The solar UV transmitted through automobile glass was measured in the
field in two cars using a spectroradiometer. The two cars were identical
except that one of the cars had all of the windows (except the
windshield) tinted.

The measured spectral erythemal UV on a horizontal plane with the windows
fully closed was reduced in the tinted car by a factor of 42 when
compared with the erythemal UV measured in the untinted car.

The ambient UVA irradiances at various locations within four different
makes of car and a tractor were also measured with a broad band UVA
handheld meter. The average normalized daily UVA exposure (measured with
a broad band UVA meter) was 1.3 times higher in a large family sedan when
compared with that in a small hatchback and the UVA exposure in a car
with tinted windows was 3.8 times less than in a similar untinted car.

Implication for photosensitive patients of ultraviolet A exposure in
vehicles.

Hampton PJ[1], Farr PM, Diffey BL, Lloyd JJ.

[1] Regional Medical Physics Department, Royal Victoria Infirmary,
Newcastle-upon-Tyne NE1 4LP, UK.

Abstract

BACKGROUND:

Photosensitive patients sometimes report disease flares during journeys
by car. Window glass blocks all UVB but not all UVA. All car windscreens
are made from laminated glass. Side and rear windows are usually made of
nonlaminated glass.

OBJECTIVES:

To determine which types of glass provide most protection from UVA with
particular reference to the implications for patients with polymorphic
light eruption (PLE).

METHODS:

The percentage transmission of UVA was determined for a selection of
glass, both laminated and nonlaminated, and with differing colour tints.

RESULTS:

Laminated glass transmits less UVA than nonlaminated glass. Tinted glass
transmits less UVA than clear glass. Nonlaminated clear glass transmitted
the highest percentage of UVA (62.8%) and grey laminated glass the lowest
(0.9%). A dose of 5 J cm(-2) UVA, enough to trigger PLE in some patients,
could be transmitted through clear nonlaminated glass in 30 min but would
take 50 h through grey laminated glass.

CONCLUSION:

Patients with severe UVA-induced PLE and other photosensitivity disorders
may have disease flares from solar UVA transmission through side-window
glass. Protective measures such as wearing long-sleeved clothing, keeping
the arm beneath the bottom of the window aperture, or choosing tinted and
laminated car windows may be helpful.

Abstract

People are exposed to ambient solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation throughout
their daily routine, intentionally and unintentionally. Cumulative and
excessive exposure to UV radiation is the behavioral cause to skin
cancers, skin damage, premature skin aging, and sun-related eye
disorders. More than one million new cases of skin cancer were diagnosed
in the United States this year.

UV radiates directly and diffusely scattered by the various environmental
and atmospheric conditions and has access to the skin from all
directions. Because of this diffuse UV radiation, a person situated under
a covering, such as the roof of a car or house, is not completely
protected from the sun's rays. Because shade structures do not protect
effectively against UV radiation, there have been major advances in
photoprotection of glass by the development of specially designed
photoprotective windows and films.

It is the purpose of this collective review to highlight the
photoprotective windows and films that should be incorporated into
residential, commercial, and school glass windows to reduce sun exposure.
Low-emittence (low-E) coatings are microscopically thin, virtually
invisible, metal or metallic oxide layers

There are several (non-turbo) 944s for sale in the area that are in the $5k
range. Not garage queens, but well maintained and in good general condition for
their age. We’ll probably go and look at a couple of them in the next week or
two. There’s a later series two model that some puffy shirt buy here/pay here
place has that’s a basket case. Story is that it was a charity donation car and
when it showed up the head and all the related parts were in a box in the
trunk. It’s actually quite nice looking and relatively low miles. Everything
appears to be there from the pictures I’ve seen of it. However, they want
stupid money ($4k) for it. Nice driver quality examples can be had for a few
thousand more, so I’m not sure how they’re attempting to justify the price.

We’ll see.

Re: [MBZ] Can ultraviolet light penetrate glass.

2020-04-22 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
Even if the UV doesn't kill the virus, a mask on hot dashboard in the
sun would not be hospitable for the virus due to the temperature. Might
not be an instant kill but doesn't seem like an environment where it
would live very long, as it doesn't seem to do well on paper or porous
surfaces to begin with. Virus seems to live longest on nonporous, hard
surfaces such as plastic, metal, glass, etc. Copper being an exception
for some reason.

If you're concerned about it, put the mask in a 200 degree oven for 15
minutes or so. Don't go too hot or you'll ruin the elastic. If you're
using a bandana type of face cover, just launder it.

When I was a kid (60-70's), in semi-farm country, most pickups were NOT 4wd.
Nor were tractors. The neighbors had a 4wd F100 that we'd had to borrow a
time or two.

With the asking prices I'm seeing for 944s now, might as well go all the
way and get a 968. I saw a beautiful ragtop a couple of years ago, tan
over dark green, for about $14k. Too bad it wasn't a stick and wasn't a

I always thought they were sort of “lumpy” looking. Very squared off.

I don’t recall 4WD being all that popular on pickup trucks until the 80s or
90s. Back then if you wanted 4WD you would get a Jeep or an International.

Can’t forget the awful paint schemes on these, either. A base color and white
trim. Ugh.

Yeah, the 420s weren’t known for their mileage, that’s for sure. However, the
one I had for short time did OK as long as I wasn’t mashing the throttle. I

Diesel or gas, they’re still a great ride, though.

[MBZ] OT - Sprinkler Leak

2020-04-22 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Just wanted to follow up for kudos to Grant - Here’s why:

After I used Don’s epoxy approach on the line break successfully I was able to
pressurize the circuit. I knew I had at least one leak in the circuit as I had
nicked the line with a shovel a few days ago when putting some new plantings
in. As this leak was in an area close to another oak tree with prodigious
roots, I used Grant’s suggestion in a slightly different way:

I have one of those little chain saw limb attachments for my weed wacker. I
don’t really care what happens to the chain, as it’s cheap and easily replaced.
With Grant’s suggestion in mind, I used my chain saw/weed wacker to carve out a
section of earth around the affected line. It made getting to the cracked
section a piece of cake.

I used a union and a coupling to patch the line, only to find out that there
was another crack just a couple feet away! So again, I’ve utilized Grant’s
chain saw excavation method to clear out the area around the newly discovered
leak so I can patch it tonight after work.

Both of these areas are covered with roots going every direction ranging from
maybe 1/2” and smaller. The little chain saw goes through these like butter,
allowing me to quickly excavate the area and not have to fight the roots.

Thanks, Grant!

UV exposure in cars.

Moehrle M[1], Soballa M, Korn M.

[1] Department of Dermatology, University of Tuebingen, Germany.
matthias.moeh...@med.uni-tuebingen.de Abstract

BACKGROUND:

There is increasing knowledge about the hazards of solar and ultraviolet
(UV) radiation to humans. Although people spend a significant time in
cars, data on UV exposure during traveling are lacking. The aim of this
study was to obtain basic information on personal UV exposure in cars.

METHODS:

UV transmission of car glass samples, windscreen, side and back windows
and sunroof, was determined. UV exposure of passengers was evaluated in
seven German middle-class cars, fitted with three different types of car
windows. UV doses were measured with open or closed windows/sunroof of
Mercedes-Benz E220T, E320, and S500, and in an open convertible car
(Mercedes-Benz CLK). Bacillus subtilis spore film dosimeters (Viospor)
were attached to the front, vertex, cheeks, upper arms, forearms and
thighs of 'adult' and 'child' dummies.

RESULTS:

UV wavelengths longer than >335 nm were transmitted through car windows,
and UV irradiation >380 nm was transmitted through compound glass
windscreens. There was some variation in the spectral transmission of
side windows according to the type of glass. On the arms, UV exposure was
3-4% of ambient radiation when the car windows were shut, and 25-31% of
ambient radiation when the windows were open. In the open convertible
car, the relative personal doses reached 62% of ambient radiation.

CONCLUSIONS:

The car glass types examined offer substantial protection against
short-wave UV radiation. Professional drivers should keep car windows
closed on sunny days to reduce occupational UV exposure. In individuals
with polymorphic light eruption, produced by long-wave UVA, additional
protection by plastic films, clothes or sunscreens appears necessary.

I second the motion: Autotempest provides links to Craigslist sites within
the parameters of your original search, e.g. distance from your zipcode.

2020-04-22 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
As in my previous post, I really enjoy the initial sorting of a car when you
first get it. It’s the best part, I think, as you often get things working
properly by just putting things back to where they should be.

I’m sort of longing for a project these days, but I can’t get motivated to do
it and haven’t really seen anything out there that gets me going.

The youngest is on his Porsche 944 kick again, so I might get to live
vicariously through that if he ever follows through. Not holding my breath,
though.

It’s especially satisfying (to me, at least) to get everything back to original
so you know its right. Call me a purist, but there’s some logic behind that
mindset when it comes to things like engines and other systems. You really
can’t second guess the guys and gals who designed these things.

Thanks for the info, it looks like it could be a sorta fun and
satisfying effort.  I have all those files on the DVDs I bought and
loaded on my winders laptop, and the 123 CDs, I'll have to dig into them

You can get a good idea of what attaches to what just looking at the line
drawing I linked to, but there should e a vacuum line drawing in the engine
compartment, I think. If not, you can find them online, too.

These are temperature switches that direct or cut off vacuum to various parts
of the injection system based on coolant temperature. The switches just screw
in/out of the block, and if you relive pressure on the cooling system can be
changed with minimal leakage, if any. These are critical to the proper
operation of the system, as they affect how it responds based on engine
temperature. That and vacuum leaks are a BAD THING for any of these cars, too.
It would be interesting to see if any of the vacuum ports on the manifold and
injection system are capped off. If not, it’s guaranteed to run poorly, if at
all.

This is real elementary stuff, so don’t be amazed by it. Again, I can’t
emphasize enough how important it is to get everything back to original in this
regard before doing any troubleshooting. For that matter, if you’re living
right getting everything hooked up properly could very well make it work just
fine. But until you do, you’re treading water. There’s no way to know if the
fuel system is working properly until it’s restored back to it’s proper working
configuration.

I’ve had more than one car that’s been just lousy until I sorted out all the
hoses and fittings and made them right again. You know how crappy the diesels
and shifting are if the vacuum isn’t right? Pretty much the same concept.

What I’ve found on a lot of cars like this one is that the vacuum system gets
boogered up and some dim bulb decides they can just yank everything and make it
work right. Which of course ends poorly. The best approach I have found is to
get some bulk (hard) vacuum line and some hose and replace everything in the
system. It’s cheap yet time consuming, but if you do’t get this sorted out of
the gate you’ll never be able to get things working properly.

Hard vacuum line is cheap as wine on ILW, I think I bought 10 meters of the
stuff a few years ago for $15, which is almost a lifetime supply for most
people. I also have a box of the rubber vacuum fittings of various types along
with a few meters of the bulk hose to make up connections.

I don’t recall seeing a lot of black cars in the day, so that probably makes it
a bit rare. The interior looks pretty good, and the exterior has the usual
cruft that all these cars suffer from, unfortunately. Being black they’re not
that noticeable, however.

If I was prioritizing things on this, I would get the belt installed and then
get a vacuum diagram and get all of the vacuum stuff sorted. At least at that
point you’ve got a foundation to work from, which you’ll need if you have to
mess with the FI at all.

that stuff I guess. Also you can see in pic 30 this vac thing that has
nothing attached to it and I can't tell where it is supposed to be bolted
down, will need to figure out whussup wif dat. Looks like I need to dig
into the 123 workshop manual and get all the engine diagrams and such.

Also in pic26 there are those fittings on the pass side of the block that
have nothing attached to them, and you can sorta see where stuff was
oozing from what I guess is the head gasket leaking in there.

Newish AC compressor, alternator (with munched belt in there), PS pump it
looks like. Exhaust muffler, pipes, resonator all new, looked like new
boots on the rear axles outboard but the axles did not look newish. Tires
pretty new. I don't know if the AC works or not, will have to put the
gauges on it and see if has pressure or will hold a vac.

For $1300 I guess I can't complain, it runs and looks decent from 20ft.
I'll sort out a few issues and see what the DMV are up to these days, get
some plates and drive it a bit.

Oh, and it has a solid roof!

I just checked and it appears that the two thermovalves that are broken off at
the fittings are still available and relatively cheap, about $22-$25/each.

Re: [MBZ] Pics of the 280E and issues

2020-04-22 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Looks like someone savaged the vacuum lines. A couple of the vacuum/temperature
switches are obviously toast, but can be replaced easily. In #30 there’s some
sort of a vacuum/electrical device I can’t identify, but it’s clearly
disconnected but may be functional.

[MBZ] Pics of the 280E and issues

2020-04-22 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
There are some things you can see in the pics I will need some help
with, will deal with that soon.  Forgot to mention it has the original
radio in it and I think it works, I forgot to check it. Did not get a
pic of that, I will add to the folder later today along with some others.

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1TPKngNrteqcuIk2snudTBdGGtzQW_TmI

Per Jaime's comment yesterday, I checked under the intake manifold and
found a vac line falling off, the connector is rotted, so that will be
something to go through.  Probably others too, I'll need to buy a bunch
of that stuff I guess.  Also you can see in pic 30 this vac thing that
has nothing attached to it and I can't tell where it is supposed to be
bolted down, will need to figure out whussup wif dat.  Looks like I need
to dig into the 123 workshop manual and get all the engine diagrams and
such.

Also in pic26 there are those fittings on the pass side of the block
that have nothing attached to them, and you can sorta see where stuff
was oozing from what I guess is the head gasket leaking in there.

Newish AC compressor, alternator (with munched belt in there), PS pump
it looks like.  Exhaust muffler, pipes, resonator all new, looked like
new boots on the rear axles outboard but the axles did not look newish.
Tires pretty new.  I don't know if the AC works or not, will have to put
the gauges on it and see if has pressure or will hold a vac.

For $1300 I guess I can't complain, it runs and looks decent from 20ft.
I'll sort out a few issues and see what the DMV are up to these days,
get some plates and drive it a bit.

Oh, and it has a solid roof!

Re: [MBZ] CL Search Question

2020-04-22 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Thanks, Rick! I hadn’t dug down that deeply into the search arguments yet, but
this is definitely the direction I was going.

For what it’s worth, while I was searching for ways to configure search
parameters on CL I came across a BuzzFeed article about searching CL with a
bunch of fun phrases that bring up some interesting stuff:

"My wife/husband is making me"
"My wife/husband doesn't like"
"My wife/husband won't let me"
"But now we have kids"
are a great way to find fun and/or luxury items that people are getting rid of.
Phrases and words like:
"Leaving country"
"Liquidation"
"End of lease"
"Must go"
"No reasonable offer refused"
"Everything must go"
“ASAP"

Again, thanks!

I can't send pics to the list, they always bounce.  Glad you mentioned
it, I should put them on a google drive folder or something

Re: [MBZ] CL Search Question

Try the autotempest site, it seems to filter things pretty well and does
nationwide CL searches you can narrow down well

I’m wondering if there is a way to search Craigslist for a particular car,
let’s say a Mercedes 300D for example, and be able to filter out all the
non-pertinent ads that people have put up using tags like “Mercedes”.

It appears that CL will put the listings with tags under the listings that have
the actual search term in the title. That is, ads with “Mercedes” and “300D”
will show up first, then any listings with the “Mercedes” or “300D” tags
afterwards.

This is a pain, as there are some idiot car dealers around here who throw a
list of tags in their ads for darned near every marque there is, so their ads
for totally unrelated vehicles will show up in the search. This is a bit of a
d*ck move on their part, but I understand why they do it to get more eyeballs
on ads.
